Brigitte Calls Me Baby first grabbed everyone’s attention at SXSW in 2023. Not long after, they were signed to @atorecords and have been on a steady track of touring and recording. During a recent visit to The Current studio, the band performed a set of songs (to be published on this website on Wednesday, Oct. 23), after which lead vocalist Wes Leavins sat down for a conversation with Jill Riley.
In a fun and candid conversation, Leavins talks about his Texas roots and what drew him to Chicago, where Brigitte Calls Me Baby are based. Leavins also sheds light on the origins of the band’s name, and how they came to work with producer extraordinaire Dave Cobb. Watch and listen to the interview above.

Hippo Campus’s fourth LP Flood is one of decided reinvention, internal depth and exploration, and loads of hard work. It’s the kind of innovative output that can only occur through means of undeniable personal chemistry and friendship that few musical groups possess. It’s no wonder the widely acclaimed Minnesota indie-rock band has surpassed a billion streams between four LPs and six EPs, performed to sold-out audiences all over the country, and then some.
Over the last five years, Hippo Campus has been holed up, writing 100-plus songs and clocking countless hours of recording work with their longtime collaborator and producer Caleb Wright. Eventually, they scrapped everything and started the recording process over with Brad Cook at Sonic Ranch in North Carolina. Flood was ultimately recorded in just 10 days.
While Hippo Campus’s music continues to mature and cultivate new lyrical and music ideas, Flood delivers the familiar, intricate melodic riffs and hooks that are quintessential to the band’s aesthetic.

JT Bates is a Minneapolis-based drummer and producer who is incredibly active in the local music scene, playing with various bands like Alpha Consumer and Fat Kid Wednesdays, and in multiple configurations across genres. He’s often playing at Icehouse in Minneapolis alongside friends including Devon Gray, Jeremy Ylvisaker, Erik Koskinen and others. If he’s not playing live, he’s actively working in studio as a session player with a long roster of musicians from throughout the Upper Midwest.
In addition to his deep involvement in local music, Bates’ beats have been heard around the world through his work with Taylor Swift, Bon Iver, Ed Sheeran, Andrew Bird, Beth Orton, Big Red Machine and others. Perhaps most notably, Bates has been a longtime collaborator and touring musician with @BonnyLightHorseman, who released their latest album, "Keep Me on Your Mind/See You Free," this past June on Jagjaguwar.
The Current caught up with JT Bates at his studio in Minneapolis to talk about his work, both as a studio and touring musician, and about his fondness for the Minneapolis music scene. Watch the interview in the video player above.
