This species inhabits coastal dunes along Perdido Key in Escambia County, Florida. They can also be found in Baldwin County, Alabama. This species is endangered from habitat loss due to development along beaches and foot-traffic damaging vegetation on sand dunes. You can help this endangered species by avoiding sand dunes when walking on the beach, picking up trash on your next beach visit, and preventing pets from entering the dunes!

Shenandoah, an adult male loggerhead turtle weighing 250 pounds, was found floating in distress off of an Indian Shores beach in February. Shenandoah was experiencing symptoms related to exposure to red tide, which included lethargy and uncoordinated swimming. Red tide is a harmful algal bloom that produces a neurotoxin that can affect turtles. Shenandoah is also missing his left front flipper, which is completely healed and will not impair his ability to survive in the wild.
After receiving specialized care at Clearwater Marine Aquarium, the effects of red tide have resolved and Shenandoah is now healthy. He has been cleared for release by CMA’s veterinarian and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Staff and volunteers were able to meet up with law enforcement, who responded to the animal, evaluated the baby dolphin, and transported him successfully to SeaWorld’s critical care center for rehabilitation. This dolphin could not be treated at the CMA Fred Howard Park facility since the rough-toothed dolphin that stranded in February is still there undergoing rehabilitation and quarantine.
Stranding response conducted under the authority of a Marine Mammal Protection Act Section 112c Stranding Agreement between Clearwater Marine Aquarium and the NMFS Southeast Region.

Voyageurs, a juvenile green sea turtle, was found floating in Crystal River having issues staying submerged. Diagnostics indicated that Voyageurs had increased gastrointestinal gas which likely caused their buoyancy. After a period on medications and a healthy diet, Voyageurs’s buoyancy soon resolved, and they began resting on the bottom consistently!
Olympic, a subadult green sea turtle, was found by the University of Florida Marine Animal Rescue team. This turtle was entangled in commercial clam gear and struggling to surface. Upon further evaluation, Olympic’s right front flipper had significant trauma caused by the gear, and our veterinarian team determined a complete flipper amputation was needed. After a course of medications and a healthy diet, Olympic’s surgical site healed nicely and was cleared for release!

The center will allow CMA to accept manatees recovering from the effects of food and habitat loss, red tide exposure, boat strike wounds, cold stress, and more. Conservation of this species is vital as manatees are vulnerable to extinction and serve an important role in maintaining the health of their ecosystems. This new center will offer manatee rehabilitation and care, while giving guests the opportunity to learn more about the species and view stable rehabilitated manatees as they prepare to be released back into the wild.
Funding for this project is made possible by the State of Florida, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Duke Energy Foundation, John H. Prescott Marine Mammal Rescue Assistance Grant Program and private donors.

facebook.com/ClearwaterMarineAquarium instagram.com/cmaquarium twitter.com/CMAquarium tiktok.com/@cmaquarium cmaquarium.orgRough-Toothed Dolphin Hearing TestClearwater Marine Aquarium2023-03-20 | The rescued female rough-toothed dolphin continues to meet all rehabilitation milestones. When she arrived at CMA’s Fred Howard Park facility, she had a mild infection that’s been treated by our veterinarians. Stranding on a beach may cause mild stress to internal organs due to the weight of the animal out of water. Thanks to the supportive care and attention from our dedicated animal care and veterinary team, this dolphin is swimming on her own and eating well now.
As part of the process to review whether an animal can be released and survive in the wild, the rough-toothed dolphin was given a hearing test on March 9 by experts from the National Marine Mammal Foundation under the direction of National Marine Fisheries Service. Unfortunately, based on the hearing test, this dolphin is effectively deaf. Dolphins with hearing loss cannot echolocate to find food or avoid predators, which is essential to their survival in the wild. Hearing deficits have been frequently found in stranded dolphins, especially the rough-toothed dolphin species for unknown reasons. Due to this hearing deficit, NMFS has officially determined that the animal will be non-releasable and recommends that she be placed at a facility with the same species.
Our animal care staff and volunteers will keep providing care for the dolphin at our Fred Howard Park Stranding Center until NMFS makes a final selection for placement. We will continue to share updates about the rough-toothed dolphin in our care.

Following nearly three months of care, CMA veterinarians have determined the turtles (named Yellowstone, Isle Royale, Yosemite, Mount Rainier, Joshua Tree, Redwood, Zion, Sequoia, Smoky and Teton) are fully rehabilitated and ready for release back into Atlantic waters! CMA is also releasing two turtles from the same cold-stun event that received care at The Florida Aquarium’s Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center, Malachite and Mel. facebook.com/ClearwaterMarineAquarium instagram.com/cmaquarium twitter.com/CMAquarium tiktok.com/@cmaquarium cmaquarium.orgDolphin Rescue ClearwaterClearwater Marine Aquarium2023-01-19 | This week, Clearwater Marine Aquarium was proud to work with our partners at NOAA-NMFS and FWC to successfully encourage a lone dolphin from a residential creek in Clearwater, Florida, to open waters. A team of 28 biologists formed a human chain to create a visual and sound barrier to guide the animal to safety. CMA’s Rescue team monitored this dolphin daily since January 1, 2023, to assess its behavior, body condition, and environment. We noted that the animal was in good body condition with normal respiration rates and was displaying normal behavior, such as foraging, during observations. Since monitoring began, the dolphin had not left the creek. This posed potential long-term problems for the animal, such as isolation from other dolphins and an increased risk of harassment and human interactions. Therefore, NOAA determined it would be in the animal’s best interest to intervene to help the animal leave the area.
We’re thankful to the residents in the area who worked with us to help protect the animal from harassment and provided access to their property while we monitored and rescued the animal. Dolphins are federally protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and harassment, attempting to feed, or feeding are illegal. Please give animals space to be wild and refrain from getting too close (within 50 yards) and interacting with them.
If you see an animal in distress, please contact your local wildlife rescue organization.
You can contact CMA’s 24-hour rescue line at 727 441-1790 ext. 1 in Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco, Hernando, Citrus, and Levy counties.

Ranch, a sub-adult green sea turtle, suffered from carapace injuries and was having trouble staying submerged in the water. Prior to his release, Ranch was taken to the Florida Aquarium’s Sea Turtle Hospital to participate in a swim test. This test was successful and proved Ranch could successfully survive in the wild. Jalapeno, a juvenile green sea turtle, was found thin, lethargic, and had fibropapilloma tumors. The tumors have been removed and Jalapeno has gained a significant amount of weight in our care.
We are so happy to see these turtles go back to the ocean today! Your day at CMA provides funds that assist the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of this endangered species.
All marine turtle footage taken in Florida was obtained with the approval of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) under conditions not harmful to marine turtles. Footage was acquired while conducting authorized conservation activities pursuant to FWC MTP-21/22-172A.
