I heard the zzzapp of the electricity when the positive clear channel and even closer leader occurred. What is heard on camera is the electric interference before the thunder. Epic Tornado - Palmer to Gilmore City, Iowa 04/12/2022 Clarence Smith 2022-04-14 | Destructive EF2 tornado impacts farms from Palmer to Gilmore City, Iowa on April 12th, 2022. A vigorous trough sweeping through the plains had chasers like myself impatiently waiting for this day. A multi-day tornado outbreak had been forecast a week out, but it wasn’t until a couple days beforehand that the models caught up to my suspicion that Western Iowa would be the focus of a tornado threat. Discrete, fast moving storms riding a warm front north/northeast at 50+ MPH was on the table. The short-term HRRR model was consistently showing a discrete thunderstorm forming near Fort Dodge, IA, but I positioned further west near Lytton. Ahead of schedule, cumulus fields thickened and gave rise to a towering cumulonimbus that darted north with me in its bullseye. Scenic open Nebraska highways dissect the barren landscape that waits to be reborn in only a few weeks' time.Threading the needle between two severe thunderstorms warned for large hail, I continue west into the brilliant yellow glow of the setting sun being filtered by curtains of rain. A beautiful sight timed perfectly with the gentle hills of rural Nebraska. This video isn’t for everyone. An Iowa Derecho in December?! 12/15/2021 Clarence Smith 2021-12-17 | There was nothing normal about this day. December 15th, 2021 will be a day long remembered in Iowa and surrounding states for a truly historic weather event. Iowa exceeded 70°F in December with record highs of 74°F in Des Moines and Waterloo. The high temps and humidity preceded a long track serial derecho that brought 80+ mph winds and tornadoes to the Midwest. 70+ mph non-severe thunderstorm winds with gusts over 80 mph followed, setting records not seen in 50 years. On top of that, mud rain fell from dust and smoke carried into Iowa from over 300 miles away. This chase shows a tornado warned storm just as it crossed into Iowa at sunset. Watch the frequent lightning and fierce winds as the storm moves through. It was an unexpected and memorable chase to end a most unusual 2021.1/17/2022 UPDATE: There were at least 63 confirmed tornadoes that occurred in Iowa with 21 of those tornadoes being rated EF-2. -63 tornadoes is officially the most tornadoes in Iowa in a single day with the previous being 35 tornadoes on August 31, 2014. -Further, 21 EF-2 tornadoes is unofficially the most EF-2/F-2 or stronger tornadoes in a single day with the previous being 16 tornadoes on June 7, 1984.-Prior to this event, a total of 5 tornadoes had occurred in Iowa in December since 1950 with all of them in southeastern Iowa. -Audubon reported the highest gust in Iowa at 88 mph. -This storm also met the criteria for a derecho, which makes it the first derecho on record in the month of December anywhere in the United States.-The top three non-thunderstorm wind gusts were 83 mph in Decatur City, 81 mph in Marshalltown, and 80 mph in Johnston.-The all-time December record high temperature for Iowa of 74 degrees that was set in Thurman, IA on December 6, 1939 was broken with four sites reaching 75 degrees (Oskaloosa, Muscatine, Iowa City, and Ottumwa).-Overall, this event cost 1.8 billion dollars in damages across the Midwest.--- Source NWS in Des Moines.-123 tornadoes have been surveyed by NWS offices across the Upper Midwest.Just incredible.I ask you to consider donating to the Red Cross disaster relief fund redcross.org/donate/donation.htmlMy tornado playlist youtube.com/playlist?list=PLCEwACcCHsRWfvqIt6-cztV5pML_mVh6G #derecho
Friday Night Tornadoes - Marble Rock, Iowa 8/27/2021 Clarence Smith 2021-08-28 | Tornado forms ahead of a very strong RFD. School started this week, the state's first high school football games are about to begin, and I'm chasing tornadoes in August? That's a first for me. Leaving without a designated target area, a storm eventually stood out on radar and in person. Given enough time, the storm produced a tornado west of Marble Rock, Iowa - right as many football games were about to begin. Tornado Almost Hits Pella, Iowa - Again! 6/20/2021 Clarence Smith 2021-06-29 | Tornado threatens Pella, Iowa for the second time in three years. It has been an abysmal year so far for storm chasers in Iowa and tornado alley. Aside from the drought, that's great news for everyone else! Only at the end of tornado season, did I have the slimmest chance of seeing a tornado during a slight risk outlook for severe weather. Models would have guided me wrong this day, but after several pivots during the chase, a little weather wisdom passed on from my dad led me to the right storm - just in time.
