I’d heard so many good things about this collection. It has over 6,000 reviews on Goodreads with an average rating of 4.07 stars! I was happy to see that the writing in this book is quite simple. It’s not simple as in it’s a book for children, but simple in that it doesn’t have the experimental nature of a Mario Vargas Llosa or the fantastical magical realism of a George Edwards or Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and it doesn’t have the early 20th century heavily rural stylings of a Vicente Blasco Ibanez, some of the kinds of books I’d read in Spanish that were more challenging. In this book, the writing is simple and the stories have a very direct, straightforward narration. So, it proved to be an easy read on that front. In this video, I give a somewhat weird review of this book that many people are claiming is a disturbing book, a great work of horror, one of the best horror short story collections of the 21st century. I have a slightly different take on it.

I tried, I really did try. But I failed. I failed to connect with these books. In fact, I failed to even finish them. In this video, I bear before you, my shame. Maybe, you’ve had a very different experience with the books I talk about and maybe, in the comment section, you’ll tell me “Try again, Michael. It’s worth it. You can do it.” Maybe. I will assume the majority of the culpability for not finishing these classic books, these celebrated books, however, I also talk about books I DNFed (did not finish) that I am not willing to assume any culpability for. And I get into why. What makes a bad book? What makes bad writing? How to avoid bad writing? #booktube #books
I’ll go into wy I DNFed (did not finish) these books, and I will assume the majority of the culpability for failing to connect with these celebrated works of fiction, However, there’s also a category of books that I DNFed and I refuse to assume the blame. Amazon US - bit.ly/46nAIS1 Amazon UK - bit.ly/3LB0R8210Sci-Fi for Book SnobsMichael Wertenberg2024-04-23 | Long-time viewers of this channel will not be too surprised to hear me admit that I am maybe a little bit of a book snob. I try to hide it, but I’m not always successful at that. What I mean by book snob is that I’m a demanding reader: if I’m reading a book with tired tropes and character traits I’ve seen a dozen times or a book lousy with present participle clauses, or when the author inserts themselves into the narrative to interrupt the story and give me preachy social commentary, I’m not going to be happy and I’m likely to come on this channel and let you good people know about it.
However, one of my reading goals for 2024 is to broaden my reading horizons, to read outside my usual genres which are literary fiction and horror. With that in mind, in this video I want to talk about sci-fi.
I have some serious hang-ups or reservations regarding sci-fi. Some of them are legit, I think, and some of these hang-ups are due to personal and professional experiences and the biases I’ve formed from them, which I’ll share with you in a minute. But despite, these hang-ups and biases, there have been a few sci-fi books that I have really liked, some I have loved, actually. And I’m not afraid to admit it. I’m not that much of a book snob, after all. #books #booktube #reading #bookrecommendations #sciencefiction

But I do love it when I come across a book that challenges me, that provokes my imagination into a spiral of ghastly possibilities. However, in order for that to happen, I need the book to be well-written; I need fluid and compelling prose to suck me in and have me suspend disbelief. And I need some level of invention. The familiar tired tropes are never going to work on me, as far as scares go, no matter how good the execution.
So in this list of 10 books I am going to share with you, the commonality according to me, is that they are all well-written and inventive or original to some extent. And I think there is a decent variety, in terms of themes and threats and how the books managed to scare me. There is one book from the ‘80s, one from the ‘90s, and the rest are more recent: the last 15 years or so. #booktube #horrortube #books #scary

The Bram Stoker Awards are given out by The Horror Writers Association, so this is a peer-based award, although the association is also comprised of non-writers, professionals involved in publishing in one capacity or the other. It is an international organization, in theory, though it’s mainly a US institution and the books they nominate for the Bram Stoker Awards are overwhelmingly from American authors. Since its inauguration in 1987, there have been 38 winners of Best Horror Novel of the Year. All of which, as far as I know, are from the US.
For me, the award reminds me a bit of the Grammys for music in that they give awards really to the most popular book. They’re not necessarily trying to promote underground authors or books that wouldn’t get much attention otherwise, or the scariest books. They’re celebrating the success of a book more so than its quality or audacious or innovative properties a book might have. But I still follow the awards. I’m curious to know what’s popular and what the horror community is interested in. #booktube #reading #books #horrortube #ranked #ranking #top10

In this video, I also share with you some discoveries I’ve made about various languages: their specificities, and difficulties. I’ll share some memorization techniques I used that allowed me to memorize and perform 10 to 20-minute-long comedy routines in languages I don’t speak at all. And I’ll share some cultural experiences I’ve had thanks to this fun, albeit uncommon, activity. #memorization #acting #standupcomedy

So far, I’ve stepped out of my usual genres to read a contemporary romance, a gay romance; and now an extreme horror. This was not by design. I watched a video from the creator BadisRad wherein she talks about extreme horror: why she reads it, what she gets out of it, and why she thinks it is important to read extreme horror. And, watching this video, given the clarity, thoughtfulness, and enthusiasm with which she expresses her ideas, it was impossible for me not to be persuaded. So, with the hope of enjoying a disturbing book, if not a scary book, I decided to read one of the books she recommended, His Pain by Wrath James White. And I have opinions. #books #booktube #reading #horrortube

Some books made the list because of the simplicity of the story and the writing: few characters and a single location. Others made the list because of their dumb premise and brainless execution. Either way, if you adjust your mindset accordingly, these books can be fun regardless of the reader’s intellectual capacity – or lack thereof. #booktube #reading #books #horrortube
