What happens when you ship a bunch of criminals to a barren country filled with venomous creatures? A country Konstantin Kisin thinks is doing a few things right, but also has a lot at stake.
Konstantin Kisin is a British-Russian comedian, co-host of the massively popular Triggernometry Podcast and author of An Immigrant's Love Letter to the West. In his recent talk in Sydney for the Centre for Independent Studies, he reflects on his first time in Australia and asks what makes Western countries like Australia so successful.
How did the West come to dominate the world?
What does government by consent mean? Why is freedom of expression good? Do we take private property for granted?
Konstantin warns that we need to better understand the ideas that make our countries great, lest we risk becoming cargo cults — simply going through the motions of what made us successful.

On this episode, Rob chats with Joanna Williams, author and former academic now running her platform Cieo, delve into the catastrophic impacts of wokism on society. Joanna defines wokism and discusses how it has prevailed, emphasising the widespread emphasis on victimhood in our culture. She addresses the core issue, asserting that the focus of woke anti-racism is on 'structural' racism ingrained in laws, policies, systems, and institutions. This phenomenon has permeated various aspects of Western society, from education and workplaces to sports, politics, and justice administration. Joanna highlights the defenders of wokism who claim to protect vulnerable freedoms but argues that opponents must recognize this and brace for a prolonged battle to reverse its influence. She underscores the and emphasises the need to vigorously safeguard our liberties against the pervasive influence of wokism.

Why?More misinformation from CSIRO on NuclearCentre for Independent Studies2024-02-08 | Energy Minister Chris Bowen loves going on and on about how renewables are so much cheaper than nuclear energy and the media loves repeating the message. But where does Minister Bowen get this from? It all comes from the CSIRO’s annual GenCost report, in which they collaborate with the Australian Energy Market Operator to update the cost estimates of new-build electricity generation, storage and hydrogen production with (they claim) a strong emphasis on stakeholder engagement.
This report estimates the cost a private investor would face for each generation technology, including wind, solar, coal, gas and many more… just not large-scale nuclear reactors. The CSIRO decided to exclude large-scale nuclear from their analysis and instead only present the costs for small modular reactors (or SMRs). This might seem a bit odd given that large-scale nuclear is a proven technology used in over 30 countries worldwide, while SMR technology is still under development.
Let's dive in and find out why the CSIRO decided to exclude large-scale nuclear. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ CIS promotes free choice and individual liberty and the open exchange of ideas. Homeownership among 25-29 year olds has fallen from 43.2% to 36.1%. For Gen Z the situation is looking even more dire with the hope of owning their own home turning into a pipe dream.

Distinguished as one of Australia's most notable figures in 2023, Price imparts a fresh perspective on her experiences and shares her critical views on the prevailing policies affecting Indigenous Australians.
Through this riveting conversation, Price unearths the damaging effects of the 'groupthink' mentality and the policy of self-determination that has not met its promised outcomes over the past fifty years. She further discusses the debilitating narrative that portrays Aboriginal Australians as victims and demythologizes beliefs surrounding colonialism and modernization. This conversation serves as an open revelation on the realities of Indigenous Australians and a call for a liberal visionary approach for their future.
In delving profounder into these intricacies, Price presents a confounding analysis of socio-cultural allusions and stereotypes prevalent in the Indigenous community. From the Indigenous feminist movement to violence in remote communities and the intersections of traditional culture with modern norms - this expansive discussion scrutinizes dominant narratives and accentuates the need for honest recognition of traditional society's strengths and vulnerabilities. Furthermore, the dialogue hones in on the individual complexities within the Indigenous community, shifting focus from race-based policies to ones centered around need and personal specifics.
The worthy culmination of this spirited chat lies in a heartfelt sharing of Price's Grandfather's life story - a man who defied societal norms and inspired resilience in his lineage. This episode guarantees to be a deep contemplation of the past, a critique of the present, and an optimistic projection for Australia's future from an Indigenous viewpoint. It is a must-listen for all interested in gaining a deeper understanding of Indigenous affairs in Australia.

#YouthInScience #NuclearAwareness #SelfDrivenLearningWill economic growth destroy the planet?Centre for Independent Studies2024-01-28 | The critique of capitalism, attributing instability and growing wealth inequality to the free market, reflects concerns about the current economic system. The assertion that greed is driving this inequality and could lead to economic and social collapse underscores the perceived negative impact of unchecked capitalism. Some argue for a paradigm shift towards degrowth, a concept aiming to simultaneously reduce GDP and enhance living standards. However, skepticism arises as achieving this delicate balance appears impractical.
While the de-growth movement emphasizes the need to address environmental concerns and resource depletion, historical data challenges the idea that economic growth is inherently detrimental. Over the past few decades, global population has doubled, yet resources haven't been depleted, and some animal populations have even increased. The Environmental Kuznets Curve suggests that, with higher incomes, economies can transition to more environmentally sustainable practices. This perspective counters the de-growth narrative, asserting that growth can lead to improved environmental outcomes.
Critics argue that economic growth remains essential, particularly in developing economies, to alleviate poverty. Economic growth has demonstrably lifted millions out of extreme poverty, correlating strongly with increased life expectancy. While the de-growth movement focuses on inequality, it sometimes overlooks the positive impact of growth in reducing poverty and promoting overall societal well-being. Thus, the debate between advocating for de-growth to address environmental concerns and supporting economic growth to combat poverty remains a complex and nuanced discussion.

Today we delve into the controversy surrounding Australia Day, commonly referred to as 'Invasion Day.' The discourse revolves around whether Australians should feel shame about their British heritage or if there's a valid space for celebration. Historical context is provided, shedding light on the foundation of Australia by the First Fleet in 1788 and acknowledging the historical issues of land theft and exploitation of indigenous people by the British Empire.
The discussion extends to the positive impact of British colonization, asserting that Australia has evolved into a leading nation with values such as the rule of law, liberty, and democracy.
The video also addresses the appreciation for indigenous people and their culture, acknowledging existing gaps between remote indigenous communities and the rest of Australia. It explores proposals aiming to empower indigenous communities, promote a strong work ethic, and recognize the limits of state power in addressing social issues. Former CIS colleague and Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price is a leader - rejecting victimhood, separatism, and symbolism in favor of empowerment and a strong work ethic.

Mearsheimer presents a nuanced perspective on liberalism, emphasising a crucial distinction between its positive impact domestically and its potential pitfalls when applied as a foreign policy approach. He delves into his views on modern-day liberalism, exploring the concept's "crusader impulse" and its role in intervening in other states' perceived rights.
Mearsheimer critically examines instances where the U.S., driven by a belief in the universality of liberalism, has sought to impose its values on other nations, resulting in interventions like Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and Syria. He highlights the unintended consequences of such interventions, often leading to the rise of nationalism in the affected regions. Mearsheimer explores the intricate bond between liberalism and nationalism, expressing his disagreement with prevailing foreign policy stances that tend to fuel nationalist sentiments. Mearsheimer provides insightful perspectives on the complexities of liberalism and its intersection with nationalism in the realm of foreign policy.
