DR Toys - Custom ToysLets make a 1/12th scale kitbash Mechanic Droid out of a Gundam model kit!
This is fun DIY kitbash collaboration project kicked off by Boylei Hobby Time, the diy challenge was to make a kitbash 1/12th scale droid. Having just come back from Galaxy's Edge in Disneyland I was inspired by a garage with Star Wars vehicles in it and I thought I should make a droid mechanic from a Gundam model and other bits I had laying around. I also set out to make an epic (at least for me) diorama.
This was a fun build with some amazing makers so be sure to check out their builds as well!

The show was filled with incredible artists, and the fans were even more amazing.
Bungie sent me a blank Ghost and encouraged me to do whatever I wanted with it. I knew immediately that I wanted to create something truly epic that would leave Bungie scratching their heads and wondering why it wasn't already in the game.
After the LA show, the art will be on display at White Space Chelsea in New York and then at Gallery DIFFERENT in London. Following these exhibitions, the pieces will be auctioned to benefit a charity.
I was fortunate to collaborate with two talented industrial designers who helped me bring some of my ideas to life using CAD. Overall, this was an incredible experience, and I feel privileged to have been a part of the show. Thank you, Bungie!

The question is, was it worth it to resin print this bot or is it a total pain?

"It's a great day to be a toy nerd!"CLEANING FDM 3D PRINT - RESIN VS WOOD FILLERDR Toys - Custom Toys2023-12-31 | My buddy from @toysontap5189 gave me his Astron figure to paint. Before I could paint Astron, I needed to clean the FDM print. I haven't really done this before so I thought this would be a great test to see if it's easier to clean up with UV resin or wood filler.
My experiment comparing UV resin and wood filler for FDM print cleanup was quite the learning experience, even if both methods had their pros and cons. While I can't tell you definitively which is "better" since it depends on personal preference and the project, I can share some takeaways based on what I experienced:
Similarities:
Both methods require significant sanding, so get ready for some elbow grease! Both can achieve a smooth finish with enough effort.
Differences: UV resin: Can be trickier to work with due to its quick curing time and needing a UV light. May generate fumes and require additional safety precautions. Can create extremely smooth finishes with proper curing and sanding.
Wood filler: Easier to apply but can be lumpy before sanding. Requires a little longer drying times between sanding sessions. May not achieve the same level of smoothness as UV resin.
Final thoughts: I found both methods effective and achieved a cool final result with your painted and weathered Astron figure! Ultimately, the choice between UV resin and wood filler will depend on your priorities. Personally I found the wood filler to be a little more work and a bit harder to work with. The resin brushed on easily and cures fast but can easily fill in fine detail if you're not careful.
In the end, both methods can lead to stunning results with enough practice and patience.
The final result looked pretty cool after I was able to paint and weather the figure.

Start by sketching out your design. This will help you to visualize your sculpture and make sure that all of the proportions are correct. Once you have a sketch, begin to sculpt your devil monster out of Super Sculpey. You can use your fingers or sculpting tools to create the desired shapes and textures. Once you are happy with your sculpture, bake it in the oven according to the instructions on the Super Sculpey packaging. Once your sculpture is baked, you can paint it (optional). To kickstart my project, I was given an old McDonald's Furby as my creative canvas. While sifting through my collection of toys, I stumbled upon a Jabba the Hutt figurine I had found at the thrift store some time ago. In that moment, it became evident that this discovery was the ideal catalyst for a one-of-a-kind toy fusion. "It's a great day to be a toy nerd!"Lets Make a Plane From TrashDR Toys - Custom Toys2023-06-18 | I found mouthwash bottle and had a model plane kit I found at the Goodwill and thought it would be cool to make a scratch build/kitbashed trash plane. I kitbashed some plane model parts, model tank bits and other trash bits I've collected to put this together. This kitbash trash build came together pretty easy and with a little custom paint and some weathering I think it came out great. I really love that it has a Hayao Miyazaki feel to it!
I hope you enjoy this toy customization kitbash video! Thanks for visiting DR Toys, and as always...
"It's a great day to be a toy nerd!"I Made a Robot From A Gum ContainerDR Toys - Custom Toys2023-06-04 | Aside from being amazing gum this container is perfect for a robot! Just by looking at the shape I knew it had to be made into a custom toy Robot. I used some Gundam bits, Final Faction parts and the legs from a Funko Legion Titanfall. The shape of this Hubba Bubba gum container made the perfect body for this robot. I also added an LED light from a tea light for an added effect.
This was definitely another think through it as you go build and the end result turned out pretty cool!

"It's a great day to be a toy nerd!"I made a Samurai MandoDR Toys - Custom Toys2023-05-21 | I made a custom toy born from the fusion of two iconic worlds. Behold, the "Samurai Mando" action figure, a captivating blend of the Mandalorian and ancient samurai warrior. I found both the Mando and Yasuke Natsumaru figure on clearance and knew I had to do some kinda toy mashup.
In this unique toy mashup, the Mandalorian's blaster is paired alongside a fearsome samurai sword, embodying grace and lethal precision. The resulting fusion brings together the stoic presence of a samurai warrior with the enigmatic allure of a space bounty hunter.
Every detail of Samurai Mando has been crafted with passion and ingenuity, seamlessly blending the iconic elements of both characters into a single, awe-inspiring toy. As you hold Samurai Mando in your hands, prepare to embark on imaginary adventures that transcend time and space, where honor and courage intertwine with intergalactic battles and heroic quests.
This custom creation stands as a testament to the limitless possibilities of imagination and the incredible joy that can be derived from merging beloved characters. Samurai Mando is a testament to the boundless creativity that exists within the realm of toys, inspiring collectors and enthusiasts alike to celebrate the power of imagination and the magic of toy mashups.

"It's a great day to be a toy nerd!"Custom Made 1:6th Scale Tee Shirt Designs - DR ToysDR Toys - Custom Toys2023-05-14 | Me and my two buddies Cristian and Ray challenged each other to come up with a cool tee shirt design for our 1:6th scale 1M Robot figure line we are working on. Clearly being 3 designers we are all confident our tee shirt design is the coolest. Not able to settle who's is the coolest design we decided to put them out there for you to decide, whoever sells all of their tees first will be the winner. We can't promote ourselves so we are leaving the decision completely in your hands. The two "losers" will have some sorta punishment. I think a little song with some actions and posted on social media for all the world to see would be great! LOL
Let me know if you would be interested in human size tee shirts like these...
