MS DOS games I always wanted to try. #doscemberThisIsPete2023-12-17 | For #DOScember2023 I try out five games that I always wanted to play back in the day, but which I never had the opportunity to, for one reason or another.

Designed in the Miner 2049'er style, the game presents 22 single-screen levels in which you must collect all the power pellets to progress. On top of that, the game comes with the Robot Factory, a level editor allowing you to make your own Mr. Robot game consisting of up to 26 levels!
#atari8bit #the400mini #retrogamingStorytime and fumbled buttons in Preppie! II for Atari 8-bitThisIsPete2024-10-07 | Preppie! II by Russ Wetmore, published by Adventure International, is a classic Atari 8-bit exclusive. Much as the original Preppie! was a take on an established formula -- in that case, Frogger -- so too is this. This time, the hapless Wadsworth Overcash is trapped in a "Supermaze" and tasked with painting it while fending off the unwanted attentions of giant amphibians and his old nemeses: golf carts and lawnmowers!
I spend nearly 20 minutes reading the story from the manual before we start playing and make zero apologies for doing so, but feel free to use the chapter marks.

#atari8bit #the400mini #retrogamingVictory Heat Rally is a Super Scaler racer, 2024 style!ThisIsPete2024-10-04 | Victory Heat Rally from Skydevilpalm and Playtonic Friends is a long-awaited PC game that is a love letter to classic late '80s/early '90s racing games, paying particular homage to Sega's Power Drift. It's a colourful, vibrant arcade racer sure to satisfy any arcade racer fan that misses the "good old days".
#pcgames #indiegames #victoryheatrallyNinjamania hits the LX system with Ninpek! | UFO 50 #3ThisIsPete2024-10-01 | In the 1980s, "ninjamania" hit popular media hard, and the alternate reality UFO 50 comes from was no exception. The result was 1983's Ninpek, an auto-scrolling platformer with similarities to arcade classics like SonSon and Psycho Soldier that tasks you with an epic quest: retrieve your sandwich from a dastardly octopus!
UFO 50 is a new release from Spelunky publisher Mossmouth and an all-star cast of indie developers, collecting together 50 fake retro games for an imaginary games console. It may seem overwhelmingly tough on your first couple of playthroughs, but get to grips with the ways different "cards" synergise with one another and you'll be clearing out those bugs in no time!

Expect tricky platforming, obtuse puzzles and a steadfast refusal to give you any explicit information.

#ufo50 #indiegames #videogamesYars Rising is exactly the sort of new game Atari should be making.ThisIsPete2024-09-15 | Yars Rising is a follow-up to the Atari 2600 classic Yars' Revenge, created as a collaboration between Atari and Shantae developers WayForward. It pays homage to classic Atari in a wide variety of ways and also is simply a really solid open-structure exploratory platformer. Basically it's everything I like in gaming, both old and new.
#yarsrising #atari #videogamesHeatseeker: Thalamus strangest C64 gameThisIsPete2024-09-04 | Heatseeker is quite possibly Thalamus' strangest game for C64. Taking on the role of the robotic "Leg" and its ball-shaped heat probe, your task is to absorb heat from perpetually burning flames and use it to bloom mysterious life-saving flowers that will ensure the survival of your race. Along the way, you'll have to contend with the local wildlife, acid rain and tremendously idiosyncratic controls.
Played via Evercade's Thalamus Collection 1 cartridge.
Full disclosure: I'm an employee of Blaze, makers of the Evercade, but this is not an official Blaze video or paid promotion. This video was also recorded prior to the release of Thalamus Collection 1, hence me describing it as "coming soon". It's actually out now!

Today we're going to take a look at how to play, and the things you might want to watch out for while exploring this interesting, unusual game.
NOTE: I recorded this a few weeks back, which is why I talk about the cart "coming soon". It's actually out right now!
DISCLOSURE: I am an employee of Blaze Entertainment, makers of the Evercade. This is not an official Blaze or Evercade video, is not paid promotion and is not intended to reflect anything "official" from a company perspective. #c64 #commodore64 #evercade #retrogamingI like James Pond 2: Codename RoboCod, and I dont care who knows itThisIsPete2024-08-28 | James Pond 2: RoboCod was a welcome sight for home computer players on its original release, in that it provided an authentically "console-style" platformer experience for players who were becoming increasingly green with envy at specialist gaming systems. The ST port makes some understandable technical concessions compared to other platforms' versions, but is still a game I'm very fond of.
#atarist #retrogamingNazi-blastin 16-bit style with Into the Eagles Nest for Atari ST!ThisIsPete2024-08-25 | Pandora's Into the Eagle's Nest is a top-down action game with very (VERY) light strategic elements. Cast as a lone operative in World War II, you must infiltrate a German-occupied castle, plant a series of bombs and rescue some prisoners. If you leave a few hundred Nazi bodies along the way, so much the better. Today we look at the Atari ST port.
#atarist #retrogamingA sticky situation in Slime for Atari 8-bitThisIsPete2024-08-21 | Synapse Software's Slime is an unusual game for Atari 8-bit that blends elements of action and puzzle games together to create something that sort of works. It was designed by Synapse founder Ihor Wolosenko and put together by Steve Hales, who was pulled off working on Fort Apocalypse to finish this one off after its previous programmer had... a bit of a funny turn, to say the least.
#atari8bit #the400mini #retrogamingFort Apocalypse: better than Choplifter?ThisIsPete2024-08-18 | Synapse Software's Fort Apocalypse, developed by Steve Hales, is a contemporary of Dan Gorlin's classic Choplifter. Both games tackle the rescuing of helpless humanoids with skilful piloting of a helicopter, but go about things in a rather different way. Let's play the Atari 8-bit version of Fort Apocalypse and see what's what!
#atari8bit #the400mini #retrogamesHarlequin: non-linear open-structure platforming, ST style!ThisIsPete2024-08-08 | Gremlin's Harlequin was soundly praised on its original release for its open structure and non-linear progression. #atarist #retrogaming #videogamesGauntlet III: The Final Quest - The Gauntlet that time forgotThisIsPete2024-08-05 | Gauntlet III: The Final Quest is one of two games that purports to be the third in Atari Games' Gauntlet series. (It is also not the final Gauntlet game.) This one was developed by Software Creations for home computers, and takes the series into isometric 3D. The ST version pales a bit in comparison to its Amiga counterpart, particularly in the sound department, but if you can deal with the slightly chuggy performance, there's fun to be had here.
#atarist #retrogamingWhats the difference between Centipede and Millipede?ThisIsPete2024-07-31 | Centipede and Millipede are just the same game, right? Not quite. Let's look at their Atari 8-bit ports, built in to The400 Mini, and find out just what's different between the two of them.
#the400mini #atari8bit #retrogamingBattlezone asks how late is too late? for an arcade portThisIsPete2024-07-27 | Battlezone is an Atari arcade game from 1980. Its Atari 8-bit port didn't come out until 1987. Should they have even bothered? Let's give it a go on The400 Mini, as it's one of the built-in games!
#atari8bit #the400mini #retrogamingSpelunker: another all-time classic with Atari 8-bit originsThisIsPete2024-07-17 | Spelunker by Tim Martin and Micro GraphicImage is famous the world over for its hero's inability to handle a fall any further than his kneecaps. It's had numerous ports and reimaginings, even to modern platforms, and has quite a following in Japan -- but as with so many popular games, it has its origins on the humble Atari 8-bit!
#atari8bit #the400mini #retrogamingAttempting to find something interesting to say about Basketball for Atari 8-bitThisIsPete2024-07-14 | Basketball for Atari 8-bit may not be the most interesting inclusion of The400 Mini's built-in lineup, but by golly I made a commitment to cover 'em all, so here we are.
#the400mini #retrogaming #atari8bitLove them mousies in Alley Cat for Atari 8-bitThisIsPete2024-07-11 | Alley Cat by Bill Williams is an all-time classic of the Atari 8-bit library, though it's probably most well-known as a PC booter title. Like many other famous games, though, it hit Atari 8-bit first -- and it's a great showcase of Bill Williams' extraordinary talent with manipulating the POKEY sound chip.
#atari8bit #the400mini #retrogamingCrystal Castles for Atari 8-bit: better late than never?ThisIsPete2024-07-08 | Crystal Castles for Atari 8-bit started development around 1984, but didn't see the light of day until an XE Games System-branded cartridge release in 1988, a full five years after the original arcade game first emerged. Is there a place for an arcade port this long after its "relevance", or is it a case of too little, too late?
#atari8bit #the400mini #retrogamingShantae and the Seven Sirens: classic Shantae meets modern ShantaeThisIsPete2024-07-01 | Shantae and the Seven Sirens is, at the time of writing, the latest Shantae game, and it successfully marries the structure of the classic Shantae games with the gorgeous hand-animated art style of 1/2 Genie Hero. It's WayForward doing what they do best, in other words, and it's a lot of fun, so I thought I'd talk about it.
Footage from the Nintendo Switch version.
#videogames #shantae #shantaeandthesevensirensA musical adventure in Jet Boot Jack for Atari 8-bit.ThisIsPete2024-06-28 | Jet Boot Jack by Jon Williams is a game that publisher English Software liked so much, they made it headline three separate compilations of Atari 8-bit games as well as releasing it by itself. And to be fair, it is a very solid little platformer, combining familiar "collect 'em all" gameplay with some interesting and unusual mechanics. Plays well on The400 Mini, too!
#atari8bit #retrogaming #the400miniA quick preview of Yars RisingThisIsPete2024-06-26 | When Yars Rising was announced by Atari and WayForward, the response from some was confusion and, from some quarters, disgust. But having spent some time with the game thanks to its Steam Next Fest demo, I'm now well up for what this game has to offer; it looks set to be another wonderful WayForward exploration platformer, this time paying homage to numerous Atari properties -- not just Howard Scott Warshaw's classic Yars' Revenge -- along the way.
Yars Rising is set for release on September 10, 2024.
#videogames #atari #yarsrisingAirballs impossible isometric adventuresThisIsPete2024-06-24 | Airball is an isometric puzzle adventure that originated on the TRS-80 "CoCo" Colour Computer (and its closely related counterpart, the Dragon 32). It was ported to a variety of other platforms, including the Atari 8-bit, which is the version you see here via The400 Mini. It's a cool, atmospheric game with some nice ideas, but ultimately the monstrous difficulty makes it hard for all but the most dedicated to enjoy.
#retrogaming #atari8bit #the400miniPogo Joe: better than Q*Bert?ThisIsPete2024-06-21 | Pogo Joe for Atari 8-bit is a game I have some rather fond memories of, and returning to it recently on The400 Mini, I see that those memories were entirely justified. This is a great little bouncy-bouncy arcade-style game, with a lot more variety than the game it's rather shamelessly drawing inspiration from. Plus it has some brilliantly bizarre level names.
#retrogaming #the400mini #atari8bitProject Gotham Racing 3 is nearly 20 years old, but still feels freshThisIsPete2024-06-19 | Project Gotham Racing 3 came out on Xbox 360 in 2005, but it still feels fresh and exciting to play thanks to its varied, well-structured gameplay, satisfying arcade-style handling and solid presentation. In a world where heavy-duty sims and open-world "content games" are the norm for the racing genre, its breezy but challenging nature is refreshing to return to.
NOTE: to avoid any risk of falling foul of Content ID, I've replaced the PGR3 soundtrack, which contains licensed tracks, with music from Metropolis Street Racer, its spiritual precursor from the Dreamcast era.
#retrogaming #xbox360 #videogamesBoulder Dash for Atari 8-bit: the original and best?ThisIsPete2024-06-17 | Boulder Dash is a worldwide phenomenon, having appeared on pretty much any home computer or console platform you'd care to mention -- and it even had several stints in arcades. It all began on Atari 8-bit, though -- so let's go play the original form of Rockford's very first adventure!
#retrogaming #videogames #atari8bit #the400miniDeath, dismemberment and gender identity in The MissingThisIsPete2024-06-16 | The Missing: J. J. Macfield and the Island of Memories by Hidetaka "SWERY" Suehiro is a fascinating exploration of one young woman's struggle to come to terms with her own identity. Unfolding as a puzzle platformer in which the heroine cannot die unless her head is destroyed, a violent quest that deals with some serious subject matter awaits.
This video deals with sensitive themes. Viewer discretion is advised.
Footage from Nintendo Switch version.
This should go without saying but I will say it very clearly nonetheless: if anyone is a jerk about any of the subject matter covered in this video, they will be immediately banned from the channel without warning.

#retrogaming #atari8bit #the400minithe second-longest Rescue on Fractalus playthrough on YouTubeThisIsPete2024-06-03 | "I know," I thought. "I'll sit down and play Rescue on Fractalus. Properly, without stopping until the game actually ENDS." This, dear reader, was one of the more questionable decisions I have ever made.
Rescue on Fractalus is a spectacular 3D sci-fi flight action game from Lucasfilm, and often regarded as one of the best games on Atari 8-bit. As I found out when I decided to keep going until a full-on Game Over, though, you'd better set aside a good portion of your day if you want to play it properly!
#retrogaming #the400mini #atari8bitShadow World for Atari 8-bit: Planet Jantor is doomedThisIsPete2024-05-29 | Shadow World by Mike Potter is one of several excellent games released by Synapse Software for Atari 8-bit in the early 1980s. An excellent showcase of the Atari 8-bit's gaming chops thanks to its speedy smooth scrolling and myriad on-screen enemies, it's an entertaining twist on the Defender formula and a stiff challenge for shoot 'em up fans. Played here on The400 Mini.
Note: Shadow World's original release crashes on anything other than a 400 or 800 (or an emulator running in one of those modes). A fixed version of Shadow World for XL/XE computers can be found here: https://atarionline.pl/v01/index.php?ct=katalog&sub=S&tg=Shadow+World#Shadow_World
#retrogaming #atari8bit #the400miniThe Seven Cities of Gold: Devastating Colonialism - The GameThisIsPete2024-05-26 | The Seven Cities of Gold has nothing to do with the popular Mysterious Cities of Gold animated series; apologies for anyone brought here by the thumbnail, I just thought it would be funny. Instead, it's an exploration-centric sandbox open world game, originally developed for Atari 8-bit by Danielle Bunten Berry of M.U.L.E. fame (and friends), and remains a thoroughly interesting game with something to say even today.
Today we take on the version included with The400 Mini, which is preconfigured to play with the default world map. Play with your own disk image and you can have a fully randomised world to explore!
#retrogaming #the400mini #atari8bitStar Raiders II (Aric Wilmunder): what might have beenThisIsPete2024-05-22 | Although the Star Raiders II we ended up with was a hasty rebrand of a movie tie-in, there was also a sequel rather more true to the original in the works around the same time. Unfortunately, it never made it to official release, but programmer Aric Wilmunder had the foresight to take it with him when he left Atari, and released it to the public in 2015. Let's try it on The400 Mini!
#retrogaming #atari8bit #starraidersStar Raiders II (Atari): the abandoned movie license-turned-sequelThisIsPete2024-05-19 | Star Raiders II is an interesting part of Atari history. While the original Star Raiders was regarded as the Atari 8-bit's "killer app", its sequel isn't nearly as well-loved -- at least partly because it began life as something different. Still, it's worth a play -- and with The400 Mini it's easy to get up and running.
#retrogaming #atari8bit #starraidersSolving my first Infocom adventure with Moonmist on Atari 8-bit. | The400 Mini ShowThisIsPete2024-04-11 | Back in the early days of gaming, text adventures and interactive fiction were regarded as experiences for more grown-up, mature players, eschewing simplistic arcade-style action for cerebral, imaginative play. Moonmist from Infocom, published in 1986 and seen here in its Atari 8-bit incarnation, is an introductory-level adventure that can be solved in an evening, but there's a few interesting things about it well worth looking at.
#atari8bit #the400mini #retrogaming #interactivefiction #infocomBristles for Atari 8-bit shows even boring jobs can be fraught with danger. | The400 Mini ShowThisIsPete2024-04-09 | Bristles for Atari 8-bit was an early game from Fernando Herrera of First Star Software, who had previously brought the Atari 8-bit world the wonderful multidirectional shoot 'em up Astro Chase. Like his prior work, Bristles became well known for its excellent audio-visual presentation and solid gameplay -- and this time around, it was also noteworthy for its original concept, placing you not in the role of a galaxy-saving hero, but a humble painter and decorator. That's not to say your life in the world of Bristles will be boring, mind...
Played on The400 Mini. Bristles will work on pretty much any Atari 8-bit, including the Atari 400, Atari 800, Atari XL range and Atari XE range.
#atari8bit #the400mini #retrogamingBinary Parasite for Atari 8-bit makes mental maths fun! | The400 Mini ShowThisIsPete2024-04-03 | Binary Parasite by Martin Simeček was initially released as an entry into the annual ABBUC software competition back in 2022, then considerably enhanced and expanded for its final release the following year. It's a puzzle platformer with a unique number-crunching twist -- in both decimal and binary!

#Atari8bit #the400mini #retrogamingM.U.L.E. - a crown jewel of the Atari 8-bit library. | The400 Mini ShowThisIsPete2024-04-01 | M.U.L.E. by Ozark Softscape and Electronic Arts is one of the finest games you can play on the Atari 8-bit systems, and notable for making complex economic theories accessible, interesting and fun to engage with. Taking on the role of interplanetary pioneers, it's your job to build a functional colony alongside your rivals... while simultaneously trying to end up the richest! It's a prime example of how developer Danielle Bunten Berry was an absolute maestro of game design.
Note that the 1.0.0 version of The400 Mini has a slightly (though not unplayably) glitched version of M.U.L.E. preloaded, so I recommend playing from an alternative disk image such as the one found at https://a8.fandal.cz/detail.php?files_id=4190 -- just load this onto a USB stick and enjoy from The400 Mini's Media Access menu.

Those who just want to get a cool plane up in the air and blow some stuff up with minimal fuss will have a great time, but those craving a bit more realism may not find their propellerhead itch completely scrached by this one...
#AtariST #retrogamingExolon for Atari ST adapts an 8-bit classic with mixed results.ThisIsPete2024-03-24 | Exolon is best-known as a Spectrum and C64 game by Raffaele Cecco, but it got a 16-bit port to ST and Amiga that makes a few changes -- most notably to the level design. While it presents players with a near-vertical difficulty curve, repeated play does gradually reveal its charms... and its irritating aspects!
#AtariST #RetroGamingDynamite Düx for Atari ST is a chilled-out take on the beat em up.ThisIsPete2024-03-20 | Yu Suzuki's Dynamite Düx (more commonly just spelled Dynamite Dux, because no-one can ever remember the Alt code for an umlaut) is a cartoony twist on the beat 'em up with a deliberate pace and some fun ideas. The Atari ST port, while not quite arcade-perfect, is a decent adaptation for the hardware of the era with some great music.
#AtariST #RetroGamingCarVup for Atari ST beats City Connection at its own game.ThisIsPete2024-03-17 | CarVup is a 1990 release from Core Design, a company that really made a name for itself in the UK 16-bit home computer game market before shooting to international stardom with the Tomb Raider series. It's a fun take on the format of Jaleco's City Connection, combined with the aesthetics of cartoony arcade titles such as Rod Land and Rainbow Islands.
#AtariST #RetroGamingB Squad for Atari ST is an unfinished game that is better than some commercial titles.ThisIsPete2024-03-13 | B Squad by Richard Hansell is an Atari ST demo game that was clearly a passion project. Developed over the course of two years, it's a tactical strategy game with plenty of depth. Although unfinished, it's well worth playing even in this demo incarnation. If anyone knows whether or not Hansell actually finished the registered version, I'd love to take a look.
