Storyline:
Wes, Vern and Otis are three cowhands on the way to a cattle drive. Cameron Mitchell is totally Believable as Nicholson's Riding Companion, and the other well Known Character Actor Harry Dean Stanton makes His Mark in a Small Role. But the whole Cast seems to be on the Film's Wavelength and All Contribute to the Experience and None Detract.

Highly Recommended for Nicholson's Fine Script, Hellman's Sure Hand Direction, and a Cast of Truly Believable Actors Playing Truly Believable Characters.

"This one is much better in my opinion than The Shooting, which was made about the same time, mainly because the story made sense. The screen writing by a young Jack Nicholson is surprisingly very good.

This was made on a low budget, and is a good example of how movie producers can make very good films without spending many tens of millions of dollars.

There are decent performances by all the cast here. The movie is set in some wisely-chosen locations, and the camera work is very good.

Insurance Investigator Roy is looking for Weston and the missing money he supposedly obtained in a robbery. When he catches him and listens to his story, he changes his mind about him. "What we have here is not so much a western but a darned good mystery thriller instead. There's a bit of action, including a slap- up ruckus in a local cafe, a chase after a runaway buckboard and an ambush in the hills. But the producers have also seen to it that musical tastes are likewise well catered for. Plus a welcome bit of comedy. In all, a solidly entertaining mixture of thrills and spills, songs and sleuths.

Rogers is adequate enough, his performance considerably bolstered by William Haade who makes an admirable sidekick, and Dale Evans as the distraught heroine. In fact by "B" western standards, the support cast is unusually strong. Withers, Heyburn, Shannon and Taliaferro are especially convincing, whilst Bob Nolan is in great voice — as are the rest of his boys.

Marta's moody cinematography is also a tremendous asset. Most of the picture is set at night, giving the plot just the right spooky atmosphere.

Director Joseph Kane, anxious to impress the Republic brass that he was capable of handling more prestigious product (this turned out to be his second last with Rogers), has handled proceedings with remarkable finesse — and even on a couple of occasions, style."

Synopsis:
The only Gene Autry film where the leading lady, Barbara Britton, is equally billed above the title as the co-star, thereby knocking his horse Champion out of the honors, if one chooses to overlook the 1941 novelty from 20th Century-Fox that had Jane Withers and Gene Autry above the title in that order. This Autry entry has Larry Evans, whose gun had been used to kill rancher Ed Norton in a poker game, escaping a lynching party headed by ranchers Dave Randall and Bill Otis. Norton's friend Gene Autry, investigating on his own, discovers that Larry's gun had been put in the poker pot with the chips, after Larry had lost all of his money, and anyone could have used it when the lights went out. He finds Larry and his sister Mary Evans in a hideaway, and sends Mary back to town and hides Larry in the cabin of miner Jim Hedge. Finding out that Randall and Don Mason have tried to buy the Evans ranch, Gene decides to take a look at it. Hedge shows up and says he can't figure out what could be on the ranch that would be worth committing murder for. The needle on Hedge's compass begins to spin madly but before Gene can question the miner, Sheriff Cramer arrives and arrests Larry. Gene persuades Cramer to gather all the players in the murder-game together to re-enact the crime, with Gene taking Norton's chair and with Larry's gun on the table. Gene tells the assembled players he knows who killed Norton and why, and the lights go out and a shot is fired at Gene. The latter, who didn't ride into town on a turnip truck, has filled Larry's gun with blanks and covered the handle with graphite.

LOADED PISTOLS’ lack of a comic sidekick is a dramatic plus, and serial master John English (co-director of ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MARVEL with William Witney) keeps the chases and fights roaring at regular intervals and enlivens the non-action scenes with inventive shots and camera angles in collaboration with cinematographer William Bradford, who did Autry’s television series. It’s quite a shock about halfway through when 1940s cars roll down the street."

After his family is murdered in the 1880s, orphan Jeb Rand (Robert Mitchum) is raised by the Callum family on their nearby horse ranch. He remains haunted by this childhood trauma in a recurring nightmare of flashing spurs and confinement inside a trap door as his family is slaughtered. Widow Callum (Dame Judith Anderson) does her best to make Jeb feel loved as he is growing up, but the young man stubbornly maintains a sense of his own identity. While he has great affection for his foster-sister Thor (Teresa Wright), his relationship with her brother Adam (John Rodney) is tenuous at best, especially when Jeb blames him for shooting a colt that he was riding. Although Mrs. Callum blames the incident on deer hunters, she is aware that the it was actually the attempted murder of the youngster by her brother-in-law Grant (Dean Jagger), a shadowy figure who, for vague reasons, is determined to harm Jeb. Jeb loses a coin flip with Adam, and becomes the designated family volunteer to fight in the Spanish-American War. Jeb returns a hero, but does not find happiness. Although Thor loves him, Adam is resentful about sharing the farm's profits, and the omnipresent, enigmatic Grant remains at the fringes of Jeb's life, waiting for a chance to revenge himself on the young man in some mysterious vendetta as Jeb continues trying to exorcise his demons.

"Do the sins of the parents fall upon the children? That's just one of the questions this brilliant film noir with a western setting asks as the brooding Robert Mitchum recounts his story to his foster sister while waiting for his enemies to attack.

Only a western because of its early 1900's New Mexico setting, "Pursued" is a brilliant example of how writers could cross film genres to make a powerful statement. Like 1950's "The Furies" (which ironically featured the always brilliant Judith Anderson), "Pursued" is an almost Greek tragedy like drama in its view of a family in turmoil. Mitchum doesn't need to speak much to express his lost soul; It is written in his eyes. Wright becomes almost like "Hamlet's" Ophelia as her hatred descends into a seeming madness in her quest for revenge. Anderson, then starring as the vengeful "Medea" on Broadway, utilized every trick in her brilliant acting brain to make this character both lovable and even somewhat sinister. This is no Mrs. Danvers ("Rebecca") or Big Mama ("Cat on a Hot Tin Roof"), and everything she does will keep you riveted, as she always did on screen, even in the most turgid of movies. It makes me wonder how she would have been as the mother in "Mourning Becomes Electra".

While there is one outdoor shot that is obviously a backdrop, everything else technically about this movie is superior. It is a film that seems better with age, and is a must see for fans of the film noir genre as well as those who think that westerns are nothing but cowboys and Indians."

"Decent and morally upright Johnny Liston (an excellent and sympathetic performance by Anthony Steffen) gets out of jail after serving twelve years. Director Alberto Cardone, working from a dark and uncompromising script by Ernesto Gestaldi and Rolf Olsen, relates the absorbing story at a steady pace, does an expert job of creating and sustaining an extremely tough and gritty tone, milks the potent sibling rivalry theme for all it's worth, and stages the rousing rough'n'tumble fisticuffs and stirring shoot-outs with considerable gusto. Steffen and Garko do sterling work in the lead roles; they receive able support from Erika Blanc as the fiery Joselita, Robert Miali as hapless browbeaten mute Jerry, Carla Calo as the bitter, boozy Rhonda Liston, Franco Fantasia as the weak, ineffectual sheriff, Sieghardt Rupp as the nasty Ralph, and Carlo D'Angelo as the crooked, slippery Judge Waldorf. Gino Santini's sumptuous cinematography offers plenty of bold and startling compositions (the sweeping panoramic shots of the dusty and desolate desert are especially striking and impressive). Michele Lacerenza's twangy and harmonic score likewise hits the flavorsome spot. But it's the film's remarkably hard and harsh no-nonsense mood which in turn gives this movie an extra jolting edge: the villains are truly hateful and sadistic, the outbursts of violence are quite savage and shocking (even women and children aren't spared from the copious brutality), and the climactic bloodbath is both wild and exciting. Their base of operations is the Reynolds ranch acquired by Parradine's front man, Leo Straykin, after killing the former owner. Needing money to finance their plan, they have rigged a scheme to cheat easterner Josh Taylor out of the $125,000 he is carrying to invest in the Reynolds ranch for a large group of people who want to settle there. To help check the titles and boundaries, Taylor has brought along a lawyer, Kenneth Jordan, and a surveyor, Johnny Bennett, who is really Jack Reynolds, the son of the former owner who is trying to find out who murdered his father. "Rustlers On Horseback has a bit more plot to it than the usual B western from Republic. US Marshal Rocky Lane through a streak of good fortune has his prisoner killed by outlaws and then is mistaken for that prisoner. Which allows him to infiltrate the gang his prisoner was traveling to join for a bit of undercover work.

Good thing too because the outlaw gang that Roy Barcroft leads has quite a scheme in mind for a place that Barcroft murdered the owner to acquire. It makes a perfect hideout for an outlaw gang. But there is also Forrest Taylor who is bringing over a $100,000.00 to buy parcels of land for a new settlement. The idea is to steal his money and keep the ranch. And Barcroft is the muscle, there's a different guy who is doing the planning.

The reason I bought this movie was Sybil Danning. You didn't see much of Sybil Danning body in this because it was a western but, she was excellent in her role as Jenny the owner of the saloon. Her talents as an actress really shined in this picture. So, with that in mind, and because this movie kept my interest through the entire picture I'm giving this movie 10 weasels stars because of Sybil Danning and the level of action , adventure and drama this movie had from beginning to end. "The 'Spaghetti Western' fan's Bible, 'The Good, The Bad and The Violent' by Thomas Weisser really gives this movie a hard time, even voting it one of the Top 10 Worst Spaghetti Westerns Of All Time(No.9 to be exact)...but that's all a little too harsh. Compared to the Franco and Ciccio efforts, or any movie by Demofilo Fidani, or indeed any of the cheap, shoddy Sartana cash-ins; this is quite a solid little movie.

And it's good for a laugh.

Weisser and his cohorts even admit that the sequences in the movie featuring Django are quite droll. As are the scenes with Johnny Ringo and Black Star(called Black 'Stand' in the subtitles of the version I watched). Indeed, the scenes which parody the Spaghetti Western cliches are extremely stylish and very well done.

The song and dance numbers, often cut from American prints, are quite bizarre and I feel that this movie would be better served on a double-bill with 'Head', the Monkees movie.

A word of warning though, if you see this movie on the Japanese DVD then you'd be as well turning the English Subtitles OFF if you want to follow the plot as they make no sense whatsoever...especially in the lyrics to the songs. Or keep them on and get an extra few laughs for your money.

"This film gets a bad rap on reviews sites, but c'mon! You've got the director of the cheesy Psychic Killer dressed as an Indian, a Western slasher film that turns Rambo in the middle, then back to slasher mode again. This film is great!

Our Final Girl is a gruff guide for a troop of Yankees who's having a really bad day. Not only was he attacked by a bear, he was mistaken for dead and chucked in a shallow grave by his mates. Worse still, Ray Danton's crazed Apache and his sidekicks are on the warpath. No gun fights here, per se – this is stalk and slashtastic!

I got a bit worried when Danton seemingly killed all the Yankees in the space of the first half hour of this film, but this was when the guide turned the tables and started kicking Apache arse, setting cactus spike traps, and dropping rocks on people's heads.

I also started to worry a bit when the last half hour of the film seemed to boil down to one guy chasing another guy through the desert, but I didn't find this at all boring. Check out the guide having a tantrum at a rattlesnake! Also, there's a grim ending and a head scratching epilogue.

It looks to me like a lot of the gore was edited out of this film, although there's brief flashes here and there. Hardly any dialogue too, which may be why folks complain so much about this film. Well, that and the lack of any plot whatsoever. I enjoyed it, though. Don't go in expecting anything but a Z-grade Western slasher and you might like it too." Written by Bezenby

"Altogether a mediocre offering, this dreary Spaghetti Western has a muddled if unusual storyline but little real feeling for the genre. John Richardson stars in a dual role as an outlaw who's been on the run for nearly 5 years - after which he can no longer be pursued by bounty hunters - and his look-alike younger brother. The latter's deliberately confusing introduction - a gunfight in a saloon in which both opponents are killed (they are traveling entertainers offering a novel form of spectacle) - comes off as unintentionally funny. Being mistaken for his grey-haired and bespectacled brother, he's tortured by a horde of Mexican bandits (who are after the gold hidden by the latter) by way of a studded ball-and-chain; in fact, an interesting aspect of the film is its inventive deployment of weaponry - others include a knife at the end of a billiard stick, and a number of guns and rifles strategically placed on the floor above the saloon - which the younger Richardson then uses to shoot the bad guys, through the cracks in the roof! I wish Kermit Maynard would've had more leading roles as he delivered nicely in this one. The same holds true for Mary Hayes who had a more limited role but showed she had star power. Of course Earle Hodgins, Sam Flint, and John Merton gave the usual great performances. But I thought the Wildcat Roper part played by Bud Buster stole the show with his wit and high energy performance. Roaring Six Guns is a roaring high energy film worth seeing."

Dave O'Brien plays a struggling mine owner who is being pressured into signing a partnership agreement that he does not want in order to safely transport his high-grade ore, with the principal villain of this piece being the cunning Ed Nelson (Tristram Coffin), assisted by a pair of henchmen performed by old file Western culprits Charles King and Bud Osborne, and there is a fine turn from Christine McIntyre who is cast in her second of the four Rough Rider adventures in which she appears, this item being perfectly paced by Robert Bradbury in his final stint as a director."

"A map to a fortune in gold has been split into five pieces. Five different individuals have a piece of the map and some would do just about anything to get the other pieces. Our two heroes, a shiftless drifter who happens to be good with a gun and a beautiful saloon singer, each have a piece of the puzzle. They form an uneasy alliance and decide to work together to get the treasure.

Miss Dynamite (or All the Brothers of the West Support Their Father - what a stupid name) has two things going for it that should have made it a winner with me - it's a Spaghetti Western starring Marisa Mell. In this case, however, that wasn't enough. My biggest gripe is with the script. I've never been a big fan of mixing comedy into a Western and this movie doesn't change that. I admit, there were a couple of scenes that I found funny (Lionel Stander crossing the river on the shoulders of his henchmen being one that almost brought me to actual laughter), but most were more groan-inducing than anything else. Also, I didn't care at all for the ending. Our heroes end up with all the map pieces and . . . well, that's about it. We never see them using the map or finding the gold. Kind of anticlimactic. Finally, while I enjoyed seeing Marisa Mell and liked her character, I can't say the same for her co-star, Antonio Sabato. His Jeepo character got on my nerves right from the start. Overall, Miss Dynamite was a real disappointment.

I've cut Miss Dynamite a break when it comes to the rating. I watched the 72 minute version available on Amazon. IMDb lists the runtime at over 90 minutes. I'm not sure the extra 20+ minutes would have made a difference (in fact, it might have made things worse), but I'm willing to cut the movie a bit of slack and give it a 4/10 instead of the 3/10 I initially decided on." "Ossorio's well-crafted and exciting spaghetti-paella western is set in the colorful Canadian wilderness amidst a violent beef between Native trappers and Canadian mountain cops. Eurocult cinema veteran George Martin stars as a tough trapper on a revenge mission after the authorities murder his brother. Beautiful landscapes, great cast, lots of shootouts, fun fight scenes (including a knife fight between two gorgeous women in a cabin), thrilling horseback pursuits, and an impressively staged final battle between trappers and police with tons of extras and cool stunts. No sleaze or brutal violence, though the body count is quite high, but still highly entertaining and worthy of repeat watches. Earlier this year, MVD released this on blu in the US with an excellent looking transfer. This definitely makes me want to check out Ossorio's other western, Tomb of the Pistolero (1964)."

"Natives playing Natives actually wasn't that unusual. There are examples going back to the 1910s, with Lilian St. Cyr. Jay Silverheels also portrayed Tonto on the Lone Ranger show on TV at the same time as this film.

What is unusual is a Hollywood film about Natives that takes place after 1900. This is to my knowledge is the only American film ever made about Indian boarding schools. In Canada there are at least half a dozen very well done films on the subject.

This film follows a Navajo boy fleeing the boarding schools. He is caught, forced to attend, given a white name, his hair cut off, must wear western clothing, and is forced to become culturally white in every way. He runs away and almost escapes, but decides to rescue two men pursuing him who are trapped on a mountain. The film is worth seeing for the landscapes alone.

There are some parts of true history left out, and it would be even more surprising had they been included. There was a high death rate from disease and sui*ides. Not just physical punishment but abuse was common, beatings, even chaining students to desks. Se*ual abuse was also common. But society hadn't acknowledged such abuse of anyone yet, and wouldn't until the 1970s at least.

The narration of the boy becomes cumbersome at points. But the film and actors deserve praise for being groundbreaking in so many ways. Worth viewing for anyone interested in the history or subject."

"Roy Rogers' career as a leading man had been going for less than two years when he teamed with his soon-to-be friend and mentor George "Gabby" Hayes. The pairing was perfect. Roy summed up all that had come before him in the way of cowboy stars. Gabby would set the high mark for what a sidekick should be, mostly because of his superb abilities as an actor.

The story begins with Roy and Gabby serving in the Confederate army as they encounter a small group of Union troops under the leadership of Colonel Denbigh, played by Wade Boteler. Gabby and Colonel Denbigh exchange words before Gabby and Roy return to their own camp. Back at camp Gabby tells Roy about his inheritance of half a cattle ranch in Texas, and the two make plans for their new life as ranchers after the war. Upon arriving in Texas Gabby soon finds out that the person who owns the other half of his ranch is none other than the Union colonel with whom he had eluded during the war is his partner. The colonel also happens to have a beautiful daughter named Ellen, played by Mary Hart. As Gabby tangles with the colonel, Roy pursues Ellen.

The bad guys are Yankees! Or, at least they appear to be Yankees. Colonel Denbigh has been put in charge of restoring order during the era known as Reconstruction. Having been instructed that a detail of soldiers would arrive to help enforce laws and aid in tax collection, he does not suspect that the soldiers that arrive are all crooked men who were thrown out of the Army. As the outlaw gang operates under the guise of enforcing the law, Roy must find a way to help the ranchers that are being robbed and defeat the crooks. Of course he does it with great charm and lots of excitement.

Southward Ho is an excellent movie from the Roy Rogers series of western movies. The movie does not rely on too much singing and romance. Instead it moves along nicely with the plot getting thicker and the action getting better. This one is definitely a must-see!"

Furnival, played by Ginger Rogers.

Ben and A.J. fly to Vegas to try to settle the matter. In just a few hours, Ben and A.J. get married. As a wedding present, Harry says the debt is forgiven. By today's standards, some people might find this - and one scene in particular - very offensive. But back in the early 50's, it was considered funny.

The Groom Wore Spurs is a decent light, breezy sort of romantic comedy that Hollywood used to crank out all the time. What makes it special - for me at least - is the joy of being able to watch Ginger Rogers!Fans of her will really enjoy this movie and they made sure to have a scene where we get to look at Ginger's legs in high heels. Those who might write about this film without seeing it might also question why the government needed horses during WW II (if that is all they knew about it from a short synopsis read somewhere), but viewing it one can learn that Jim Fellows, is the head of a government experiment in wild horse reclamation for purposes other than war, and his efforts are hampered by Gus Jordan, manager of the swanky Lariat Lodge dude ranch, but actually the leader of a gang of rustlers who steal the horses as fast as the ranchers can round them up for the project. When the rustlers steal a herd from Alice Blake, her kid brother Bobbie, sets out to get help from his radio favorites, Roy Rogers, King of the Cowboys, and the Sons of the Pioneers, who are en route to Lariat Lodge to play a one-night stand.
While riding down the road with Gabby Whittaker, who has given him a ride in his jalopy, Bobbie sees three men who he recognizes as rustlers and, when he tries to stop them, they begin beating him with whips. His life is saved by the timely arrival of Roy and the Sons of the Pioneers. On the way to take Bobbie back to his sister, who is at the Fellows Ranch, they run into the rustlers on a raid, and take Burt Wooster and Pete prisoners. Wooster, the foreman at the Fellows Ranch, is actually an accomplice working for Jordan. He insists that he is not a gang member and Roy, pretending to believe him, agrees to let him take Pete to Sheriff Brite. Unaware that Roy and the Sons are following, Wooster and Pete go straight to the Lariat Lodge, where Wooster, after announcing that he is quitting, soon learns that he should have gone to the Sheriff with Pete, because Jordan and Pete shoot him. He lives long enough to tell Roy that the signal for a rustler raid is the playing of a certain song over the Lodge's nightly radio program.

"This one is a treat for any Roy Roger's fan, there's action to keep the story moving along with thoughtfully placed songs including the title track "Ridin' Down the Canyon" and "Blue Prairie" from Roy and the Son's of the Pioneers. Comedic relief is furnished via Pat Brady and Gabby Hayes with a running gag where each is told the other one is deaf. It's as much what this movie doesn't have as what it does have. No lavish costumed musical sets with orchestras and no action stopping slapstick comedy. If you want to know why Gabby Hayes is considered the iconic western sidekick watch this movie. A lot of the credit has to go to the dialog and screenplay by Republic Studios veteran Albert DeMond and Norman Houston. The script seems like it could have been custom written for Gabby who is almost a second lead in this one giving Roy the opportunity to what he does best, just be Roy.

After watching "Ridin Down the Canyon" it's hard to figure out why Republic Studios decided to tamper with such a successful format. After this movie and for the next several years Roy's simple, straight-forward westerns ever increasingly became theatrical musicals that bore less and less resemblance to his earlier releases. Synopsis:

There would be half a dozen plots that could be used for a western and the story was usually told in a conservative fashion, using techniques that ran back to when William S. Hart, popularizer of the Good Bad Man in the movies, was one of the leading western stars. The conservatism was a combination of practicality and art: the Bs were the stomping grounds of silent A directors who wished to continue to work.... and the fact that the story took place in the outdoors meant that the outdoors formed a good part of the story.

In this one, Joel McCrea is the Good Bad Man -- a great trail boss whose men got out of control and wrecked a town. Now the town is struggling to make a comeback, and has hired McCrea to lead the drive -- and much of the town has come along on the drive The movie is beautifully shot and the plot has a revenge drama quality that makes it peculiarly interesting. Unhappily, most of the acting talent, once you get past McCrea, is less than first rate. Still, it does have its not inconsiderable charm and its easy assumption of what may seem like bizarre attitudes may give you the start of an understanding of the genre."

Storyline:
A band of bandits ride into a down-on-its-luck town and take everyone captive so that they can rob the Butterfield Stage of the $100,000 its carrying.

They force Doc Williams (Wayde Preston) to greet that stage. And when the escort detail is gunned down, the townsfolk blame Doc for not doing anything to stop the massacre.

He vows to correct that. He plans to hunt down and kill every member of the gang, led by a man named Burnett (Rik Battaglia).

Burnett dresses like a gentleman even if he doesn’t act like one. And his gang includes a sex-crazed killer named Black (Aldo Berti), who is especially intrigued by Doc’s pretty girlfriend (Anna Malsson).

In his quest for vengeance, Doc picks up a sidekick named El Loco (Marco Zuanelli), who rides around on a burro and rescues his new friend from a couple of tough jams.

"A stranger, filmed at strange angles, walks purposefully into town, stands outside the bar, and plants a cross on the ground, bearing the name of a man inside. The man and his henchmen confront the stranger outside only to find the date of death on the cross is this very day, and that date of death will soon be exact...

People criticize Antonio Steffan for being a wooden actor, but he fits the bill perfectly! Steffan plays Django, a man who may or may not be the vengeful ghost of a Confederate soldier who wants to kill his commanding officers who sold their troops to the Yankees. There are two other officers on his list, but these guys have money at their disposal... money that can buy many hired gunmen.

Murdok is the main guy that Django has in his sights, and he's the one who hires the guns. He also has some domestic problems since he basically pays Rada Rassimov to marry his psychotic brother (Luciano Rossi, playing crazy as usual), and she's not happy with this setup. Rossi is also out of control, dragging a man to his death and killing the local sheriff for opposing this. He's also the only person who remotely comes close to finding out if Django is a ghost or just a guy with human skin.

That's the main question of the movie - is Django a ghost? He seems to appear wherever he wants (even around a fire where the bad guys talk about him, in the background when the bad guys come out of the shot, and he even seems to dodge a bullet at one point), and he also seems to murder a lot of hired guns. Some are even sent to town dead, crucified, on horseback. He really is a bastard!

The plot is simple here, which seems to help things. Django knows who he's going to kill and he intends to do it, and that's it. It's interesting that although Luciano Rossi's character seems to draw blood from Django, nobody seems to believe his claims that Django is a ghost! The ending blurs the lines even more here too." The first half of the film is the comedic, episodic story of "Sacramento" Thompson, who seems to be constantly getting into problems from which his grown children must save him, and who is a jack-of-all-trades including prizefighter and preacher! The first half of the film is leisurely paced and even features a gospel song. Hardin, who has always had a roguish charm, is perfect for this role and he's decked out in a gray-tinted beard, flashing his winning smile. Then, about halfway through the film, an event I won't mention triggers a kidnapping/revenge plot that continues through the rest of the movie. Without a star of Ty Hardin's talent and charm, I don't know if I would have finished watching this film, but he manages to make it all worthwhile. The unique angle of this Italian western is in combining both the Django and Sartana characters together, both of whom had their own series of spaghetti westerns. Although it does have to be said that this distinctive aspect has to be set against the fact that both protagonists only resemble these characters in name and act decidedly differently than usual. Truthfully, it seems obvious that these names were only applied to the characters as an after-thought. Quite honestly, this is a very clichéd and derivative affair with stock characters such as an enigmatic bounty hunter and amoral villains aplenty. But despite all this, I found it overall to be slightly better than average for this kind of thing. It didn't descend into tedium too often and its sparse running time seemed like good manners on the part of the film-makers. So, while any seasoned fan of this kind of thing is highly unlikely to find anything new here, I still think it entertains more effectively than many others in the sub-genre." The two (Adore being the other) are chased through the west, encountering scrape after scrape until the killers catch up and the score is settled for good.

"Ah, such beautiful music!

This film opens with a classic sequence. A stagecoach is attacked by a gang, with all the passengers brutally massacred. Cue Morricone's haunting soundtrack as the camera focuses on the dead, and in particular the face of a blonde girl. A hand brushes the dust from her face,and the camera pans up to show the sorrowful face of Billy (Giuliano Gemma). A truly moving scene, but made particularly so because of Morricone's music.

In a way, this opening sequence is quite out of place with the remainder of the movie. The rest is a light-hearted affair, based around the partnership of Billy and Larry (Mario Adorf). Billy is a smart, world-wise man, whilst Larry is not gifted with the greatest amount of intelligence. This is a perfect foil for Billy, who is a convincing conman and successful in getting the better out of his gullible partner throughout the film (including robbing him of his entire life savings).

The action really hots up when the character of Roger Pratt (Federico Boido) is introduced properly (until this stage, he is purely the face of the gang leader from the opening ambush). He is a brutal man, tracking down Billy on behalf of his father Samual Pratt (Anthony Dawson). The second half of the movie concentrates on this pursuit, with Samual also arriving on the scene and proving to be as barbaric as his short-fused offspring.

Director Giulio Petroni (of "Death Rides a Horse" fame) adopts a similar style to the one used in his later Milian cast "Life is Tough, Right Providence?". It shares its episodic structure, and "clever man/thick man" partnership. Anyone that has read my other reviews will probably have noticed that I do not generally like the more light-hearted westerns. However, I did very much enjoy most of this particular film (the same could not be said of "Providence" incidentally).

A particular highlight of the film is a superb scene as Billy cons his way into the house of a beautiful Widow (played by the frankly gorgeous Magda Konopka). Another very beautiful Spaghetti Western actress, part sorrowful and part sexually teasing." Written by marc-366 on IMDb.com.

Storyline:

"I typically find Klaus Kinski's performances in these Spaghetti Westerns failing to live up to his reputation, but there's a brief scene near the end of this 1971 release that may actually convinced Werner Herzog that Kinski was right for '72s AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD. In any case, I enjoyed this despite the lackluster dubbing of Kinski, the annoyingly ridiculous "lovable old coot" dubbing of Dante Maggioa as Grandfather Jonathan, and a rather awkward final reveal. "Shoot the Living and Pray for the Dead is an average-at-best spaghetti western that has its entertaining moments, though it has many faults.

The acting is very dry and somewhat wooden, except for Klaus Kinski in the role of Dan Hogan, the leader of an outlaw gang. Hogan is an over-the-top, ruthless character who is very entertaining to watch due to Kinski's mannerisms and acting style. Kinski is the only reason this movie merits a rating of 6, rather than a 4 or 5.

The storyline isn't all that interesting. It starts off as one of those "everyone's a bad-guy and we're all after the gold" flicks, then, near the end of the movie, we learn it is really a revenge story. The problem is, a good revenge story needs build-up. We see nothing of how the protagonist was wronged, nor do we see any anger or emotion of any kind from him. We only learn of his motivations when a Texas ranger matter-of-factly tells them to someone. As a result, we can't become all that drawn into the story, and are only mildly interested in seeing the revenge played out.

There is lots of sitting in a room, and walking through the desert in this movie. It would have helped if there was more action.

The music score is pretty decent, and there is some good camera work, especially during some of the close-ups of the characters' faces.

If you are an avid spaghetti western fan, there is enough here to make this worth a watch, mostly thanks to Kinski." Written by spider89119 on IMDb.com

"I came upon this little old Western because I like Sam Elliot in just about anything I see. I think he is a fine actor, underrated by many as just a one character actor. This early one proves them wrong. I thought that this movie had an early tone of the current independent movies being made. Also a little of a European quality to the way it was presented. Quiet, not a lot of background music. Sometimes seemingly slow, but well paced and always going somewhere. Sam Elliot's character of Johnny, was wonderfully played. We don't know him in the beginning, only his reputation. He reveals himself verbally at first, and by his actions as the movie progresses. Vera Miles as Molly, was so touching. A woman self described as once bright and fun when she was young, now afraid to speak. Her hopes and dreams gone with the dust of the town and aging without the much wanted children. Her husband, Marvin is the Sheriff. Softly played by John Anderson, he shows us how hard life has made him, and later his true caring underneath. This is a great script. It is about selfishness, and selflessness; the inability to change, and the ability to change; needing protection, and the empowering chance to protect. They just used a Western set as a backdrop. I wish that this great little movie could find wider distribution now with videos. I thought it was truly well played and well made!!"

"This is a very quirky film. It is, at times, unintentionally funny, and at other times just plain bizarre, but hey I like that kind of stuff so it's alright with me. I actually find this film to be extremely entertaining. Of the four or five Demofilo Fidani movies I have seen, this one is the best.

The music score by Lallo Gori is excellent. It is probably the highest-quality part of the movie. The trumpets, guitar, and organ are used skillfully to create suspense and emotion with a style that is undeniably spaghetti western.

Though Fidani's movies are not known for good acting, Robert Woods actually does a pretty good job in this one as Sam Wallach, the slightly whacked protagonist who suffers from dooraphobia (Yes, he breaks out in a cold sweat and gets hysterical at the mere thought of a door opening and closing. I'm not making this up!) Simonetta Vitelli is also good as Fanny the barmaid. I can't think of any other Fidani film that actually has TWO halfway decent acting performances.

I noticed that another reviewer has commented that the movie seems out of order and makes no sense. Actually, there is a plot here and it's not all that hard to follow. The order of events seems correct to me. It is a simple revenge tale. It's a rather typical story, but a pretty decent one. It also has more action than the other Fidani westerns I have seen. Perhaps my copy is a more complete version than some of the others out there. I'm not sure. It's 85 min. long.

The movie's got some corny dialog, but that just makes for more laughs, which is a good thing. I suspect it's because the English translation is poorly done, but who knows?

Some strange highlights of the film include a surreal, slow-motion brawl with echoing sound and laughter, an odd conversation between the main villain and his gang where he orders them to split up to avoid capture but doesn't mind when they refuse to leave, a way over-the-top cheesy slow-motion flashback sequence, Sam's dooraphobia, of course, and a French female barroom singer whose accent seems more German than French. She sounds like she has a microphone, and sings in a style that sounds more like it's from the 1930's than the 1870's.

You either love this kind of stuff or you don't. Like I said before, I find it very entertaining. I'd rather watch this one than many of the so-called "great" films. It sure beats the hell out of trying to sit through "Gone With the Wind." Yuck!" Written by spider89118 on IMDb.com

IMO California is one of the last real Spaghetti Western but the filmmakers didn't want to do a typical Western. Somehow it reminds of one of the many 50's Western flicks but with a darker a more sinister story. Maybe you can compare California with Keoma or The great Silence. Also like in these Movies it isn't so easy to say who really the hero is. Is it Guiliano Gemma as California, who hates his old name and has enough from all that Killing and Shooting? His opponent is Raimund Harmsdorf a German actor and is best known in supporting roles in so many B-Movies or German TV Shows. In California Harmsdorf has a fairly good role and he did some fine acting. He is a ruthless Bounty Hunter who kills Confederates Soldiers for Money. Unfortunately politics changes and he is getting an Outlaw. For a SW there are interesting characters and not just a faceless Hero and his Villain. Sorry but the figures aren't simply Black and White in this drama and there are no funny jokes of Guiliano.

I wasn't quite happy with this melodramatic Organ 70's like Music. In some way it fits in some not. The photography is bleach and the environment looks dirty. Towns and people seemed to be destroyed by the war and this world has nothing to do with the beauty as you can see in Once Upon a Time in the West. Some Scenes are taking place in a Ghost Town. These Scenes are very climatic and give the audience more of the Apocalyptic Feeling. The Storyline has two parts. A travel at the end of the American Civil War and then a Vendetta as it we have already seen in so many contributions to the Genre. But it wouldn't be a typical Spaghetti Western if this Vendetta wouldn't be different. California (1977) hasn't a lot in common with Gemma's first western A Pistol for Ringo (1964).

For me this melodramatic western was a big surprise. The storyline and the figures are fine written. It's not a Feel Good Movie or just another action loaded Hero Tale of the West. Of course it has some flaws and there are some weak points in the second part but overall it's an interesting flick. Director Michelle Lupo did a good job and it was his last serious western too." "Fans of Italian Western will know Gianni Garko (aka Gerry Hudson) as Western Hero Sartana in many of his later movies. The first scene with the wonderful Fernando Sancho will remind you on Sartana but this time Gianni Garko will be another main Character. In "Per 100,000 dollari ti ammazzo" he is Johnny Forest (in some alternate Version round the world Django) a man who was accused to have killed his father by his brother. After years in prison he became a bounty hunter and his brother an outlaw. Johnny Forest chases his brother. The background to the Cain/Abel story is set place during the civil war. There are several interesting scenes including brutality of war and melodramatic sequences. As there are some flashback scenes and some atmospheric scenes in a ghost town. These flashbacks are the highlights of this movie and important for the story of the main characters. Overall the music score is very good but in the flashback scenes a bit too overwhelming.

Synopsis:
Luc Merenda is Horatio, a bandit looking to get even with a partner who cheated him out of his share of the loot from a job they pulled.

""Santee" is a decent enough film, but it's "Jody" song that comes and goes throughout the movie is reason enough to deduct a point!

The film begins with a really BAD family reunion. Jody, a 19 year- old guy, comes upon his father and three of his 'friends'. It seems that Jody barely knows his dad and was raised by his divorced mother. Well, wouldn't you know that the father and his men are on the run from the law! Soon, a bounty hunter, Santee (Glenn Ford), shows and quickly dispatches the guilty four men--leaving Jody a bit shocked to say the least! Jody is angry enough at Santee to kill...but inexplicably, Santee is nice to him and realizes he was not involved with his father's gang and their crimes. What follows is a bonding between Jody and Santee, as Santee takes him home with him and treats him decently. All this bromance, however, is short- lived, as the men who wronged Santee so long ago and set him on a life as a bounty hunter arrive in town--and they are really bad dudes!

The film has a rather original plot and I enjoyed it. But 1970s god-awful music took away, somewhat, from my enjoyment. Still, despite this, it's worth your time. Plus, you get to see Jay Silverheels in a role much more interesting than playing Tonto to the Lone Ranger."

When the stagecoach in which they travel is attacked by Monteiro's gang, Lash accepts to kill his friend to save his bacon. On reaching his destination - a village near the Mexican border where he is to take possession of a gold mine, he realizes that he has a neighbor, old Johnny, who owns a farm and another gold mine. He immediately sets about making his life miserable, hoping to drive him from the country and lay hands on his possessions. Lash soon becomes the undisputed master of the area, at least until Buckaroo, a wild horse tamer, arrives in town.The young man accepts to work for Johnny and, when his boss is killed in an ambush, starts gathering men with a view to fighting back Lash's army, reinforced by Monteiro and his men, who have resurfaced. After many adventures, Buckaroo gets rid of both Monteiro and Lash, in whom he has recognized the cowardly murderer of his own father.

"The mysterious stranger Buccaroo (Dean Reed) rides into the small gold-digger's nest New Tuscosa, only to discover that the town is dominated by the multiple mine owner Lash (great Livio Lorenzon). As you know from countless westerns, he has gotten the biggest part of his property by forcing the former mine owners into a cheap sale. The only opponent of Lash is the aging gold digger Johnny McKenzie (Ugo Sasso), who strictly refuses to give away his mine under price. But all by himself he is practically in a lost position. Help comes his way in the person of Buccaroo, who condemns Lash's bad methods and dares to stand up against his ruthless thugs. He gets support by Jean Louis, among others, who you probably know best from Barboni's Four Fists for a Hallelujah. Will they be able to withstand the pressure of the villian and what secret does Buccaroo carry inside? With Dino Strano and Gilberto Galimberti there are other well-known faces of the genre in smaller supporting roles, while Monika Brugger (Annie) and Angela De Leo provide the female charms of the film.

Adelchi Bianchi's (not to be confused with Andrea Bianchi) Buckaroo - Il winchester che non perdona is solid Italo-Western material and knows how to entertain, although something more could have been made of the story. Dean Read plays his role as usual with his tongue in his cheeks and even gets to smash a few (terribly inappropriate) songs (among others "For tomorrow I may die"). Livio Lorenzon once again convinces as a nasty villain and the rest of the line-up does a good job, too. The musical background of Lallo Gori is fine, although I think I know some of the songs from various Fidani epics. All in all, Buccaroo - Gallows Birds doesn't offer any decent entertainment, yet without standing out from the broad, at best elevated, midfield of the genre.

The movie is rather mediocre, but can entertain adequately, has been well directed and the actors also know how to convince. Fans and collectors should strike, as this is an absolute rarity, which is now available on DVD for the first time worldwide!" Written by BluntWolf on letterboxd.com

A former sheriff, after being accused of a robbery and escaping from jail with a revolutionary bandit, seeks revenge for his brother and his family.

"Brad Harris had signed a contract for three westerns with a production company called Three Stars, but only two of the three movies were completed, Wanted Sabata and Arriva Durango, Paga o Muori. This third part (See Database Page) was produced by another company, and is said to be an assembly of re-edited scenes of the first two movies, with a couple of new scenes added (*1). The film is best know for a couple of great titles (in Italian and English) plus a wonderful poster design, also used for various releases of the movie on VHS and DVD. Biggest throwback: the scene depicted on the poster, is not in the movie.

Harris is Durango (Django in some versions) and he’s a former sheriff falsely accused of a robbery. He ends up in jail with a guy called Spirito Santo, who was arrested for steeling money he needed for the revolution and his poor family at home in Mexico - at least that’s what he says (he also pretends to be one-eyed). The two are sprung out of jail by a mystery man and subsequently join a gang of Mexicans who are looking for the stolen strongbox: Durango to prove his innocence, Santo to collect money for the revolution. We also get a vengeance tale, with Durango looking for the man who killed his brother and his wife.

As one might expect from an assembly movie, Death is Sweet ... doesn’t hang together. The vengeance tale is particularly stupid: Durango tracks down the killer and takes his revenge, but an earlier scene clearly showed that this man - played by Vassili Karis - was not responsible for the slayings; when he arrived on the spot, Durango’s relatives were already dead and he has been trying to eliminate Durango ever since, because he - Durango - would never believe that he was innocent. What nonsense! Is the movie worth tracking down? Harris is his usual self, steady as a rock and acting like one, but the patchwork seems to hurt Torres' performance: In Arriva Durango ... his hyperactive style worked well in combination with Harris' stoicism, but here his character has no consistency and his overzealous routines - invoking la madre de Dios every other minute or so - quickly become annoying. "The first time i watched this film i was surprised at how good it was. We spag western fans are always searching for the next "good one" and let me tell you, there are many "bad ones" to wade through in the process. I want him dead has been called gritty in every review i have ever read about it and it is. It is also a kick but revenge western with a kick butt Craig Hill performance. He has also done a few other spags worth mention. The dirty fifteen aka. fifteen scaffolds for the killers and no graves on boot hill by Sergio Garrone being at the top of my list. I want him dead has great camera work and the score is superb. It fits the film like a glove. Jose Manuel Martin plays the antagonist and many other spag regulars will be spotted by any fan of the genre. I have the Franco Cleef version of the film. To my knowledge it is the best English language version available. Franco Cleef is the man!! Go Franco Go!!!!!! He puts together English language versions of rare spag westerns for English speaking fans that would have no other way to watch these fantastic films. Thanks Franco for everything you do."

Storyline:
A gang of landgrabbers, led by Mexican bandit Manuel, terrorizes the small town of Landford City. The sheriff asks the army for help, which orders Captain Mike Jackson to see what is going on in his old home town and also search for a government agent who has disappeared in that area. Jackson immediately finds himself in the middle of fist fights and shoot-outs with the bandits.

"When Jeff Cameron is at the top of your cast list, you know you’re about to embark on a low-budget ride through Spaghetti land.

And this one doesn’t disappoint in that sense, with banal dialogue (check out the last quote below), lots of horse riding scenes and lots of bad guys doing acrobatic death spirals after our hero points his gun in their general direction.

This one does benefit from a larger cast than most, which makes for a slightly more complicated plot.

Just don’t spend too long thinking about some of the plot twists, like why Mary’s father would reveal the secret location of his mine to a government agent minutes after meeting the man

The story line also includes a truly imaginative way to do away with the film’s bad girl (Esmeralda Barros as Paquita) so that Jeff doesn’t have to be responsible for gunning down a female.

Storyline:
A lovely lass named Esmerelda (Wilma Lindamar) is washing clothes by a stream when she’s attacked by a Mexican.

Brothers John Baxter (Ferruccio Viotti) and her boyfriend Slim Baxter (Jean Louis) come to her rescue.

But the Mexican, Juan Morales, winds up dead. And Mr. Baxter figures that’s likely to reignite a feud between the families.

Sure enough, bandit leader Ramon Morales and his men descend on the Baxter ranch, killing the patriarch and kidnapping Esmerelda.

Mrs. Baxter pleads with Slim not to resort to vengeance, even after he’s riddled with bullets and left for dead following an initial showdown with Ramon.

But when you’re dealing with Ramon and his henchmen, violence is the only answer, something Slim comes to realize after they raid the Baxter ranch for a second time.

"Beautiful looking film with suitably terse performances by Robert Hundar and Jean Louis as the primary adversaries.

Then there’s fetching Wilma Lindamar, who’s been soiled by Ramon and promises the Virgin Mary she’ll make it right by marrying him, if only she’ll let Slim recover from his near fatal wounds.

But the plot meanders too much for the film to be wholly successful and you wind up wondering why we were ever introduced to some of the characters.

There is a memorable scene in which Slim uses a unique method to quicken his draw. One of his “gang members” repeatedly pounds an axe into a piece of wood. Slim has to anticipate each fall of the axe and pull his gun — or lose his gun hand to the axe.

"This Spaghetti Western from Mulargia is a very nice B-Movie with good actors, music and atmosphere.

The most time of the movie is placed in a little town and that is very good for the atmosphere of the movie. Ivan Rassimov is very good in the part of Django and also Petro Sanchez is a very good partner for him. Rassimov's sister plays his real sister Rada. You can also see the writer and director Vincenzo Musolino in the part of Hondo. The great score is composed by Felice Di Stefano who also composed a few other scores for Mulargia and Musolino.

All in all this Western is a great B-Movie and a must see for Spaghetti fans." Written By garko80.

"It's not the first time that a drama of Shakespeare or another classical is adapted and free interpreted for a Spaghetti Western. The story is about the war between two rancher families: Monter and the Campos. In the Shakespeare Drama the two are named Montague and Capulet. The son of the Monter who is named Johnny not Romeo has not many experiences with Guns and Women. Fortunately he got a teacher an old outlaw called Lefty and he meets Guiletta Campos the daughter of the Campos Chief. She is espoused to another man but fells in Love with the son of her father's enemy. The cast of the two lovers are Peter Lee Lawrence and Cristina Galbò. It's interesting that both became a couple during making FURY OF JOHNNY KID and married few years later. There is obviously good chemistry between them. Nevertheless the movie is more a spaghetti western as a romantic drama with typical violent scenes, a revenge story and a buddy next to the hero. The typical Buddy story it's about an old outlaw is teaching a young fellow. The Buddy (Andrès Mejuto) is called Lefty and he has only one hand left. All actors are pretty good and the movie is without strange overacting you see in so many contributions of this genre. Somehow it's like an Adult Western without childish elements you'll find in most western from Italy.

Next to these "normal" western stories there are some extraordinary scenes. I didn't expect the end and Yes that's what I would call a weird movie. FURY OF JOHNNY KID is the only western directed by Gianni Puccini who is better known for his work on more sophisticated Movies. He did quiet a good job as also the composer Gino Peguri and the cinematography by Mario Monturi have done.

FURY OF JOHNNY KID was a big surprise for me. It's a weird Spaghetti Western for Adults with good Acting, Directing and a fine score. I enjoyed this unusual Movie with a suspenseful story and many interesting scenes and at least some connection to the great Drama of Shakespeare." Written by lostinaction on IMDb.com

Storyline:
Dante Posani (billed as Montgomery Clark here) is Djurado, who rides into Silver Mine City and helps lovely Barbara Donovan (Scilla Gabel) revive Donovan’s Saloon. Her uncle started the saloon, but was killed the day she arrived in town by town boss Tucan (Luis Induni) and his henchmen. The saloon sits on what Tucan believes is an underground treasure of silver. So he wants her saloon and the land on which it’s located. Reopening the saloon stirs up a new round of hostilities that includes an attack on the Donovan ranch and that convinces Djurado everyone might be better off if he left town. But Tucan still has a grudge against the young men. Djurado is tracked down and beaten. And while he recovers from his wounds, Tucan has his men rob a bank and leave behind a clue that points to Djurado as the guilty party. Now he has no choice but to return to Silver Mine to try to clear his name and end Tucan’s reign of tyranny.
