In her work, the artist — born in Leningrad (USSR) and living in Vienna since 1989 — proves to be an astute observer of human coexistence, its social conditions and political requisites. For the Austrian contribution, Jermolaewa draws an arc from her personal experience of migration as a political refugee to signifiers of nonviolent resistance against authoritarian regimes. In Rehearsal for Swan Lake, made in collaboration with Ukrainian choreographer Oksana Serheieva, Jermolaewa references a memory from her teenage years. In times of political unrest, for instance the death of a head of state, Soviet television replaced their regularly scheduled broadcast with Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake in a loop for days. In Soviet cultural memory, the famous ballet became code for a change in power. The show is quite special, as for the first time in the Fondation Beyeler’s more than 25-year history, the entire museum and its surrounding park will be transformed into the site of an experimental presentation of contemporary art. Participating artists include Michael Armitage, Anne Boyer, Federico Campagna, Ian Cheng, Chuquimamani-Condori and Joshua Chuquimia Crampton, Marlene Dumas, Frida Escobedo, Peter Fischli, Cyprien Gaillard with Victor Man, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Wade Guyton, Carsten Höller with Adam Haar, Pierre Huyghe, Arthur Jafa, Koo Jeong A, Dozie Kanu, Cildo Meireles, Jota Mombaça, Fujiko Nakaya, Alice Notley, Precious Okoyomon, Philippe Parreno, Rachel Rose, Tino Sehgal, Rirkrit Tiravanija and Adrián Villar Rojas. Munich (Germany).Born in Würzburg in 1924, the artist studied under the sculptor Anton Hiller at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1946-52 after serving as a front-line soldier in Russia. As early as 1952 he received an award in the "Monument to the Unknown Political Prisoner" competition in London and in 1958 the sculpture prize of the International Liturgical Institute in Rome for "Golgotha" at the XXIX Venice Biennale. His first solo exhibition followed in 1959 at the Günther Franke Gallery in Munich and in 1961 his solo exhibition in New York at the Staempfli Gallery. At this time, Fritz Koenig also founded a thoroughbred Arabian horse breeding farm in Ganslberg near Landshut.In 1964, the 42-year-old was appointed to the Chair of Sculptural Design in the architecture department of the Technical University of Munich. From 1967-71, he was commissioned by the Port Authority New York to work on the fountain with the "Spherical Caryatid N.Y." for the World Trade Center. In 1969 Koenig became a member of the Akademie der Künste Berlin and the Bayerische Akademie der Schönen Künste Munich and further exhibitions followed. In 1983 he created the memorial to the Federal Republic of Germany at the former Mauthausen concentration camp in Upper Austria, and in 1995 a memorial to the victims of the terrorist attack at the 1972 Olympics in Munich's Olympic Park.In 1993, Prof. Fritz and Maria Koenig's estate is donated to the city of Landshut, which establishes the Sculpture Museum in the Hofberg. Fritz Koenig is awarded the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art and the Grand Federal Cross of Merit. In 1998, the first retrospective "Fritz Koenig. The bronze shows a human figure on a block-like base, reduced to two legs and a prism-shaped body. A copy of the work has been erected in Ganslberg, like a memorial, in an open corridor, so that the five wings can radiate far into the room, but their oppressive weight and presence is also clear. The aspect of threat and human suffering is countered in the sculpture by the aspect of protection, under which the mighty wings can also be seen. The human figure is left with an airy free space and can gaze freely into the distance.

Rather than contest or dismantle them, Savu rearranges the revolutionary tropes – of workers united by political aspirations and the choreographic rhythms of building the future – to capture the unadorned reality of a historical limbo, moments of suspension, perplexity and inertia as microcosms of ampler societal shifts or crises.At the pavilion, a monumental polyptych-like installation brings together about 40 paintings in a multi-faceted study of a social scene increasingly emptied of shared meaning, where different ideologies erect their scenographies and emit their proclamations. Interpreted through contemporary ecological and decolonial perspectives, the project builds a space for imagining a different way of relating to nature.Lenka was captured in Kenya in 1954 and transported to Prague Zoo to become the very first Czechoslovak giraffe. She survived only two years in captivity, after which her body was donated to the National Museum in Prague and exhibited until 2000. Eva Koťátková’s collaborative project employs a transformative educational practice that re-imagines Lenka’s story as a poetic, embodied encounter, and as a place of critical intervention in the relationship between institutions and the natural world. Alongside collaborations with artists and composers Himali Singh Soin and David Soin Tappeser and the collective Gesturing Towards Decolonial Futures, Lenka’s story is interpreted by children, educators and older people, with the installation facilitating multiple forms of storytelling. Archie Moore’s kith and kin is both evidence and reminder of these facts. The sprawling chalk on blackboard mural traces his Kamilaroi and Bigambul relations back 65,000+ years, including the common ancestors of all humans. Handwritten across the walls and ceiling, the family tree engulfs the audience. The education materials refer to the transmission of knowledge and what is left out of history. Kamilaroi and Bigambul words in the drawing assert Indigenous language revival initiatives, while holes signal colonial invasions, massacres, diseases and displacement that sever familial ties. The central reflection pool is also a void; a memorial to First Nations deaths in state custody attended by piles of coroners’ reports. Archie adds archival records referencing kin to demonstrate how colonial laws and government policies have long been imposed upon First Nations peoples. These bureaucratic papers documenting tragedies are cradled by the reflection of the family tree in the surrounding water. As one moves through the coil-like architecture, it unfolds, multiplying perspectives.The installation principally consists of conterie (seed beads), historically employed as both currency and items of exchange. Conterie were dispersed globally from the Venetian island of Murano and incorporated into various material cultures. Kiwanga uses these tiny glass units to construct the monumental out of the minute, each bead acting as a witness to past transactions that changed the socioeconomic landscape of the sixteenth century and beyond. The work addresses the often-destructive history of commerce and how the trade of these beads shaped the world. Other materials related to the trade of conterie are also included. They rise from the pavilion’s floor onto the walls and spill out into the courtyard. The show is titled “By the Means at Hand” and is located at Fàbrica 33 (Calle Larga dei Boteri, Cannaregio 5063).Official description: Vlatka Horvat’s project for the Croatian Pavilion – By the Means at Hand – exists as both a dynamic, accumulating exhibition of artworks by a large group of international artists living “as foreigners”, reflecting on questions and urgencies of diasporic experience, and as a compelling, intimate, social, and performative exchange between them. The pavilion also doubles as Horvat’s temporary artist’s studio over the course of the biennial. Horvat has invited a large number of artists living in diaspora in different countries to engage with her in a series of reciprocal exchanges of artworks and other materials, all of which will be sent between Venice and other places by improvised means – via various friends, travellers, and strangers who will be enlisted as informal couriers for the project.The project builds on the principles of solidarity, shared struggle, mutual support, and friendship – prerequisites for co-existing with others and key elements in the toolkit for those living “in foreign lands”. Yael Bartana and Ersan Mondtag / German Pavilion at Venice Art Biennale 2024 VernissageTV 2024-04-21 | Official description: Every moment is a threshold between the vanishing past and an unclear future. This uncertain, intermediate position of the present applies equally to everyone. For those affected by migration, however, it is a fundamental three-dimensional and bodily experience, because the current state of migration is always one of living at the intersection of different belongings. This is where the historiographical and, thus, political difference from the dominant societies’ primarily territorial or national perspectives lies. Under the title Thresholds, the German contribution explores history and the future in three scenarios:In the first scenario, artist, photographer, and filmmaker Yael Bartana departs from a present perceived as catastrophic; a world on the brink of total destruction.In the second scenario, the theatre and opera director Ersan Mondtag develops a space that contrasts the monumental character of the pavilion with a fragmentary, seemingly minor narrative.In a third scenario, the contribution engages in building a bridge to another location outside the Giardini: the island of La Certosa. Here the artists Michael Akstaller, Nicole L’Huillier, Robert Lippok, and Jan St. Werner create a resonant space with works that focus on the significance of the moment of temporal and spatial transition.Thresholds.
