From September to November, there are nearly 50 different spots to view live performances and art installations across the city of Suzu, and even when the event is finished, many projects will remain as landmarks across the peninsula.
Because the train line no longer runs to Suzu, it can be seen as a bit difficult to visit as a tourist, but this is a blessing as much as it is a curse. If you can rent a car, you will be rewarded with plenty of accessible modern art installations for an unforgettable sightseeing trip. If you arrive by bus, you can rent an e-bicycle at Suzunari-kan community center for the duration of your stay, which will give you access to many of the public structures as well.
Either way, if you can swing it, this is an incredible stroll off the beaten path!

Magical Trip is a food tour company in Japan that offers unique and authentic food experiences for travelers. I had the pleasure of joining one of their tours on my recent trip to Tokyo, as we toured Kabukicho by night and visited several restaurants. The tour was led by a knowledgeable and friendly local guide who showed us around the vibrant night-time neighborhoods before bringing us to several restaurants to try.
The guide was also very informative, sharing interesting tidbits about the food and culture of Japan throughout the tour, and I was in great company with the other guests as well!! I also loved how inclusive it was for vegetarians as well!
Even though I've lived in Japan for many years, Kabukicho is definitely not an area I visit very often, so everything felt new and exciting for me, too!

The Hinkomaru was shot with a U.S. Navy torpedo during the Pacific War, and has laid sunken in this bay ever since. On fair weather days, visitors are encouraged to swim out and explore it! In the clear calm waters you can observe coral growing on the rusted ruins, and even encounter schools of tropical fish!
In the winters, the waters are a little more rough, so we explored by kayak, but it was still exciting to take a look under the water’s surface and see what lies beneath. (By the way, the water wasn’t even cold, even though mainland was about 0°c and snowing, the outside temperature here was 18°c, and the water was warm enough to swim in!)
Although the islands once had a thriving population of over 7,000 people, everyone was forced to evacuate to the mainland during the second world war, and the islands were re-occupied by the Japanese military instead.
After the war, the US occupied the islands but returned them to Japan in 1968, it was only after that, that the Japanese were able to move back and re-settle on the island. Everything you see on the island now, including the lush forestation, could only thrive after the war, making the ecosystem relatively young here.
Many remnants of the war remain scattered around the island and are preserved and used as educational tools for visitors. This forest is like a living museum.

These restaurants actually have their original locations stationed all around Tokyo (Akasaka, Ningyocho, Tsukiji) but on Takashimaya's restaurant floors, you don't need to travel to various regions of Tokyo to find them.
While you don't have to try everything in this video, if you see something you like, these are experiences in a relaxed elevated atmosphere above the busy (and puzzling) Shinjuku station that are the best of their breed. You can find soba around Shinjuku station, for example, but Takashimaya's 100% buckwheat soba is gluten-free and made without additives. You can get sushi around Tokyo as well. but your experience can differ greatly depending on where you go.
For safe, delicious options, Takashimaya has your back. If you plan to visit elsewhere, then hopefully just learning about these dishes will give you inspiration for your own travel itinerary as well!
Restaurants in this video:
Akasaka Fukinuki (赤坂ふきぬき)

(English menu available, google reviews recommend lunchtime.)
Imahan Sukiyaki (今半すき焼き)
goo.gl/maps/vjCRGXsAkNN25KC2A
(They cook your wagyu for you at your table, totally beginner friendly!)
Tsukiji Tamasushi (築地玉寿司)
goo.gl/maps/Qrx42UdhrAiHWmor8
(Lunch offers sushi courses on a sliding scale, from 2000-4000en!)
Sonhonke Komatsuan (小松庵総本家)
goo.gl/maps/pkmFacTkPBqLoftz6
(Gluten-free soba meals on the 13th floor, with sweeping views of Shinjuku station.)
Tsubame Grill (つばめグリル)
goo.gl/maps/3s9qJ1Kzrb3fRC7o8
(Sometimes you just need a hamburger - Western-style cuisine with open-air terrace seating)

Welcome aboard the Ogasawara Maru ⛴️♥️
This ferry is the only mode of transportation between mainland Japan, and some of its most remote islands! It only runs once every six days, taking an entire day both ways - making the shortest possible stay on these islands four whole days!
Also known as the Bonin Islands, this small collection of islands lies 1000km south east of Japan and is actually considered to be part of Tokyo’s greater metropolitan area! Although the islands are incredibly remote and not easily connected to the mainland, approximately 2,500 people choose to live out their best lives here.
Evie and I, along with Loretta (@kemushijp) and her little boss, and the team at @makes_japan set out to visit this small tight-knit island community and learn about their perspective and way of life! I can’t wait to share the things we experienced during our short four day stay!
Happy to answer any questions about the ferry in the comments below! ✨✋
TW: Loss
If you follow me anywhere else on social media, then you will already know this story and I'm sorry for taking the time to talk about it again, but for those who haven't been following along, I needed to be able to make this update before I could move forward with my own work.
Sometimes really sad things happen and there's just nothing you can do to change the outcome of the situation, over the past few years during the pandemic I'm sure I'm not the only one who has struggled with the loss of a loved one or two, but this has hit me so hard I've not really felt the same since. I don't think I'll ever truly move on from it, and even though things are subjectively "okay" now, there's not a day that goes by that I'm not processing old information in a new way, or re-examining minor details of the past events. Grief is weird like that.
But I am so thrilled to have my baby daughter. I can't wait to raise her here in Fukuoka City and teach her everything I know, and I hope you won't mind if she makes an appearance here and there from time to time, as well.
Hope to catch up again soon.
If you live in Kyushu (especially Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Saga, or Fukuoka) a weekend trip to Unzen is a great choice if you:
✅ Have a Driver's Licence
✅ Enjoy Hiking and Nature
✅ Are an Independent Traveler
✅ Want a Secluded Getaway
The nearby towns of Minami-Shimabara and Obama are just a short drive down either side of the mountain, and offer their own attractions as well (such as dolphin watching!)

Come with me as I explore the region, including the many remaining art exhibits and their role in local tourism. I also explored the town's relationship with Croatia, and their feelings and passion towards hosting Croatia this year ahead of the summer games.

With over 20 young recruits living on the island under the work experience program, the island itself is full of life and fresh ideas and it was really cool to talk to some of the kids there about why they choose to live so far away from the rest of Japan.
The islands are also hosting Micronesia for the summer games, and have worked really hard to foster a bond between the country and the small island village.
This is somewhere I'd love to visit again in the future!

In early January I visited the Setouchi Region surrounding Shikoku, for a short three-day tour of the area! Starting in Hyogo, we visited Himeji Castle, before driving through Awaji-shima and arriving in Tokushima. Then we ventured to Kagawa, where we hopped on a ferry and explored the island of Shodoshima! It was my first time getting deep into the Setouchi region - although Shikoku is somewhere I always feel like I'd like to spend more time. Hopefully I can come back in the summer one day! I'd love to go island hopping!

Kit (dog) is an 8 year old Shiba Inu, he protecc, he attacc, and he sleep a lot.
Lon (cat) is a 6 year old Russian Blue, his hobbies are lounging, hiding, and jumping Kit.
If anyone is wondering about Sara (my foster poodle), I rehomed her at the end of last year because she had too many individual needs that couldn't be met without me sacrificing the needs of everyone else (three pets was too much for me as a singleton). The vet suggested she be in a single-pet-household and helped me find someone to adopt her. She's happily living with a dog groomer and his wife now, and I can drop in any time and ask how she's doing. :)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
●Curry
- Meats: Pork, Beef, or Chicken. Whatever you have.
- Vegetables: Potato, Onion, Carrot, Mushrooms, Spinach/Komatsuna/Kale, Asparagus, Sweet Potato, Pumpkin (Kabocha), Eggplant, Okura, Renkon (Lotus Root)
Quick Tutorial on How To Make Curry @ 4:53
●Instant Miso (for reference, this is the kind I usually buy amanofd.jp/amano/shop/goods/index.html?ggcd=B4741&cid=miso)
You can buy any kind, some instant miso comes with a paste, which some people may prefer but I like the freeze-dried type. It is said that certain nutrients are preserved when you freeze-dry vegetables, so I think they're a bit healthier.
●Cook Do (for reference: ajinomoto.co.jp/cookdo/lineup)
These are usually found in the Chinese seasoning section of your Japanese supermarket (as the majority of the boxes are Chinese.) Similar simple-meal kits with Japanese recipes are sometimes stocked in the same aisle.
●Canned Tomatoes
- Good for curries (add one can of diced tomatoes to your curry to make it more tangy and acidic)
- Pasta (sautee veggies, garlic, onion, and bacon, add your diced tomatoes, stew, taste, and season, add to pasta)
- Soups (lightly sautee your favorite soup veggies in oil and garlic, pour diced tomatoes into the pot, then fill the empty tomato can with water and add one cube of soup stock of your choice, throw in your desired seasonings, bring to a boil and simmer. you can add rice, quinoa, gains, shredded chicken to make it a hearty meal.)
- Stews (for beef, lamb, and pork, I cut my vegetables large, season them first with cumin, curry spice, cinnamon, salt, pepper, paprika, etc to make a fragrant mix, then add tomatoes and water, and simmer until liquid has dissolved and the mixture is thick enough to be a stew.)
- Salsa (Use half a can, pulse in a mixer with red onion, cilantro, garlic, green pepper, red chiles, lemon, salt, pepper, and a bit of cumin for a more tex-mex flavor)
●Spices:
I didn't show them in the video but I actually prefer S&B's herb packets, you can see what they look like here:
sbotodoke.com/shop/c/cB51210
Most supermarkets have them, and they are very versatile, cheap, and easy to use.
●Yakiniku Sauce:
You can choose any kind you like! When in doubt, the popular Yakiniku chain "Gyukaku" has a sauce in the supermarket that's pretty good. Use this on "grilled" and "charred" meats. Tastes great over rice. Make a "Yakiniku Bowl" with charred carrots, cabbage, onion, green pepper, and slices of beef or pork.
●Ponzu: I prefer Yuzu, but you won't be missing out on too much if they don't stock it. Regular Ponzu works. Use this on steamed veggies with lighter flavors, or in sautees with Asian veggies (bok choy with garlic topped with ponzu, baked white fish with salt and ponzu, or daikon and pork sauteed with ponzu is great!) Can be mixed with olive oil, salt, and pepper to make a salad dressing too!
●Veggies - Try to pick a few greens, and then one veggie of each color. I try to plan for one raw-green (for salads), one wilting-green (for soups and stir-fries), and one firm-green (for baking grilling) per shop.
Green: Lettuce, Baby Leaf, Spinach, Bok Choy, Komatsuna, Asparagus, Zucchini, Green Pepper, Kale, Cucumber, Cabbage, Avocado
Purple: Red Onion, Eggplant, Purple Turnip, Satsumaimo (Sweet Potato), Purple Cabbage (great for adding color).
Red: Tomatoes, Red Peppers, Beets, Beni Daikon (Red Radish)
Orange: Carrot, Pumpkin, Orange Pepper, Orange/Yellow Fruit Tomatoes
White: Daikon, Turnip, Cauliflower, Renkon (Lotus Root), Bean Sprouts, Potato, Onion, Sato-Imo, Yama-Imo,
Brown: Gobo (burdock root), Mushroom
●Buy & Freeze:
- A loaf of bread or two (Japanese bread tends to come in slices instead of loaves so buy accordingly.)
- Meats (Chicken Breasts are the most versatile AND cost-effective IMO.)
- Frozen Seafood (S&B has a paella seasoning! if you can find it, this is a nice way to utilize rice, veggies, and seafood)
- Frozen naughty snacks like pizza, dorayaki, frozen fried rice, emergency instant meals, etc can go here too.
●Pasta and Rice are good to have, but if you don't have a rice cooker in your apartment, you can buy a few microwavable instant-packs from your supermarket or convenience store and store those instead.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In this vlog I just wanted to talk about a bad dating experience I had here in Japan, and although I didn't explicitly say it in the video, I think it's pretty reflective of how hard it can be to date in a culture where you're constantly struggling with your own identity.
I understand why the guy felt the way he did that day, because I've been there too. It's hard to be judged on appearances, and I think the further away you go from the central areas of Japan that seems to get magnified. But as someone who has lived in Japan longer, I also understand how the Japanese people feel, and while they definitely could use some training on how to handle situations where they're unsure of someone, I know they don't really mean to be as awkward as they are.
In some ways I wonder when/how I became such a passive person, especially when dealing with conflicts when I have no reason to apologize.
But that's a story for another day.
Hope you're doing well! Share your unfortunate dating stories with me if you want!

Summer may be over, but that doesn’t mean we have to stop having fun. With comfortably warm nights continuing into Fall, there are still plenty of opportunities to go outside and enjoy public festivals and events in Fukuoka.
Whether you’re just passing through the city or you’ve lived here for years, one of the events you can look forward to is the yearly night market, lighting up the downtown Nakasu District with red lanterns, starting in August, and occurring every weekend until the end of October.

Among the hundreds of Tenmangu Shrines throughout Japan, Dazaifu's (大宰府天満宮, Dazaifu Tenmangū) is the most important one alongside Kyoto's Kitano Tenmangu. Tenmangu Shrines are dedicated to the spirit of Sugawara Michizane, a scholar and politician of the Heian Period. Because of his great learning, Michizane has been associated with Tenjin, a Shinto deity of education, and is popular among students.

With this, I can go on public roads in Japan, and practice driving in a realistic setting! All that's left now, is to buckle down and study for the final exam. Should I take the exam in English? In Japanese? I'm not sure! There are so many things to memorize!
I hope I pass!

I’ve been going to Fukuoka Prefectural Driving School to get my license and it’s actually a lot of fun!? I don't know why I waited so long to get this done.
I’ve always had a fear of driving and I was really worried I’d never pass in Japanese... (Okay I haven’t technically taken any exams yet so I can’t say I haven’t failed yet but) I was actually super relieved to know they have English textbooks and the tests can be taken in English too.
The actual classes are all in Japanese though so I haven’t decided which language I’m going to take the tests in, but now that I’m actually going to the school I feel way more confident. Driving on the school course is so boring. I want to get out on the real roads. :o
What's getting a driver's license like in your country? ;o
Special thanks to Fukuoka-ken Jidosha Gakko for allowing me to shoot when most people aren't supposed to be/allowed to be shooting. I really really really appreciate everybody allowing me to share this experience!

My "visa lawyer" (I actually call her a 行政書士 gyosei shoshi, but visa lawyer is much easier to understand.)
Maico Ono
http://www.visa-fukuoka.com
^ If you are looking for options post graduation, beyond English teaching, are looking to transition into an investors, startup, or relatively obscure visa, or are in a tricky situation that isn't easily classifiable through online research, definitely send her an e-mail. This isn't sponsored at all, I've just used her for three years now, and she's the only person I consulted who didn't just tell me to get married because it was "easier". :)
**Obviously this is for Fukuoka residents (and greater Kyushu), sorry I can't help recommend someone for Tokyo. But if you are looking, I encourage you to talk to multiple people before choosing who to go with.
