Inglebard MusicHere's my of cover Requiem for the Gods from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. This was created in the paid version of Deflemask and as always runs on actual Genesis hardware.
For those interested, I created the FM instruments (patches) from scratch inside of Deflemask - there are no special tricks, just a lot of tweaking. I used Dark Audacity to handle the samples. I used multidumperGUI to break the channels into individual wave files and I then used Corroscope to create the oscilliscope views for those channels. I edit all my videos in Davinci Resolve.
Notes for this one... alright, so I was up against the clock for this one when I decided to do it! I have surgery scheduled in about 4 days as I write this. Wasn't sure I'd be able to finish it before then, but things worked out and here we are. This one was of I'd say more moderate difficulty, but it was kind of impossible (for me) to just do it by ear because it was so tough to hear some individual notes in the original song and some instruments drown out others in it. Not knocking the song, it's fantastic, but it probably could have had slightly better balancing.
Anyway, the choir style instrument was tough to get right, I think I got that as close as I could. I had to share some channels in a few places and cut a select few instruments in a few small places too, because there just weren't enough sound channels to handle everything at once. The cuts were very minor, I just wish I could have had another few tracks espeically to beef up the choir sound a little, but I think in the end it came out OK. I'm sure you'll all let me know if it didn't!
Anyway, that's about it for this one. It'll probably be about a month before I can do another one because of the aforementioned surgery, so stick around and there will be more! If it's not too much trouble (and not too much pain) I might clean up an old song in a few weeks that I did as a cover of an Amiga game that hasn't appeared on the channel yet!

Alright so notes on this one. I took it slow and worked on this over like a week here and there. I was mostly done in a few hours but I didn't like the way some of it sounded and scrapped about half the song and started over. Originally I used samples for the big, booming echoey drums (not sure what the real life instrument is called) and created FM sounds for the bass drum, snare and toms.
The more I listened to it the more I hated it because it reminded too much of the retail Genesis Super SF2. So I scrapped those samples and isntruments and reversed them, using samples for the bass drum, snare and toms and I made an FM instrument to simulate the echo drums. It took a while to get it sounding a way I was happy with but I think they're pretty nice for an FM version of those drums built from scratch.
Then I played around with a lot of PSG enhancement ideas, and basically none of them ended up sounding good so I scrapped them and went with more traditional PSG usage just backing up the main instruments. It's subtle but the song sounds much better with them than without them, I think.
This song is completely based off the CPS2 version of the game, but I did listen to the X68000 version too, just to see what they eliminated and modified. They added some extra cymbal crashes into that version, but I didn't use them in mine.
For the critical version of the song, it uses fewer instruments since it eliminates the main melody so I was able to make parts of it sound a little fancier with more stereo effects.
This song was made for an upcoming new port of Super SF2 to the Genesis / Mega Drive, just like the Cammy songs I did a little while back. Hope you all like it, let me know!

What's this? Two videos in two weeks? I'm spoiling eveyrone!
I did this one for a project someone is working on so you may hear it inside something cool pretty soon! If you follow me and some of the other Genesis folks on Twitter you may have an idea what it's for already. Anyway, this song was TOUGH. Timing changes, orchestral instruments, weird drum tracks, pitch bends, doubled up samples, constantly switching samples in channels, you name it. It's almost like those Konami musicians were experts or something!
I know this one isn't perfect, but I can't really devote any more time to it for now, so here it is. Let me know what you think. I probably put close to 20 hours into doing this one, figuring things out and doing tons of tweaks and I'll probably still tweak it some more after this.

Well, it's been over a year. I've been working on music the whole time, but for various projects and I can't post any videos of the song's I've done for them until they come out. But I needed to make a few new instruments and refine some and there's this AWESOME homebrew Ssuper Street Fighter II project for the Genesis and I offered to do a couple of songs to stay sharp. And so... here we are!
I tweaked all of the instruments based on older ones I made trying to get them to sound a little more realistic/good. Hopefully you'll think this version is way better than the official version that Capcom released back in the day which has notoriously awful music.

Notes for this one...sorry it's been a while. Been dealing with work, getting my master's degree, doing some paid music gigs and other stuff that's kept me away for a bit. But here I am, back with my FIFTIETH cover/remix! I recently played through the Pixel Remaster of Final Fantasy I and there was this part in the battle theme I kept homing over that wasn't there and thought it would sound cool. So, I made this Genesis remix and included that part in it.
Nothing special to report here, I mainly repurposes instruments I made in the past. I used bits and pieces from the original NES OST, the pixel remaster and the GBA and PSP versions to round this one out. I couldn't quite get it exactly as I envisioned it, but I think it came out pretty decent and would have been happy hearing this in game.

Notes for this one...allrighty another one in the can! I did this one for the upcoming homebrew version of Darkstalkers for the Genesis, which will combine some stuff from a few different games in the series.
As usual, getting the drum tracks down is tough when going from CPS2 to Genesis. The arcade version primarily uses three distinct rhythm tracks (sometimes four) so squeezing that into ONE isn't too easy, you're gonna lose SOMETHING. I manage to put a little of it into the PSG noise channel to fill in a smidge of what was missing while leaving the precious FM channels open for the main parts.
I didn't really know this song all too well and had listened to it a whopping total of one time before I started working on this, lol. As you can probably imagine, I've heard it an AWFUL LOT now. There are a few things I wish I could have gotten to sound a smidge better (the hard brass shortly after the intro and the strings - always the strings) but overall I'm pretty happy with the results. What do you think?
Jump in and tell me what a terrible, decent, OK or great job I did in the comments! As a side note, My time is at a premium these days, so I'm going to have to limit what I work on. I'll still contribute to homebrew stuff as I can, but paid stuff, my real job, in-progress master's degree work and family have to take precedence. I did this song for the homebrew project as I said above, but it took me like 6 weeks to get a couple of days to put it together.

Notes for this one... So, I started this one for the last episode of my tutorial series. I thought the song would be fairly easy from what I remembered of it. Once I started working on it I realized... it's NOT easy, lol. Oh well. I always loved it and wanted to do it anyway.
This version is a mix of parts of the arcade version, parts of the SNES version and some subtle original touches I added that I thought helped make it sound good on the Genesis'/MD's sound hardware. I wasn't trying to match the arcade or SNES versions exactly, I wanted the Genesis to have its own thing that would have sounded good in a real game.
I struggled a bit with the instruments in this one and you can probably tell they don't really sound liek either the arcade or SNES version. I could have gotten most of them really close to the arcade and originally had most of them closer to the arcade version while I was working on it, but it just felt like it was lacking something. The SNES game, which sounds awesome, has instruments that sound a little too video-gamey if you know what I mean, so I didn't want to try to match them either, though in this case that would not have been too hard.
In the end, I like how it sounds and think this is how I would like to have heard it in a potential release on the Genesis back when Gradius III was new. No, this is NOT for any current project anyone's working on. I'm not being coy or sneaky, I just decided to do this for my tutorial. If you or anyone you know is working on a port of Gradius III and want to use this, feel free to get in touch with me.

Notes for this one... yes, it's been a long time. But I'm working full time, working on a master's degree and doing some profressional music writing, so free time is a little tough to come by these days. Also, I should never have decided to do this song because it was REALLY HARD, lol. Hardest one yet. It's all by ear so I'm SURE there are lots of screw ups. I couldn't find sheet music anywhere so I did my best. I might update it if sheet music becomes available somewhere.
I put a lot of work into the instruments for this one, I really wanted to try and capture the orchestral feel of the original as best I could on the limited FM and PSG sound hardware employed by the Genesis. While I was able to do pretty decent high and low piano tones, the mid range is tough to get sounding as realistic, so the part near the end with the arpeggio doesn't sound how I wanted it to, but I've spent about all the time on this that I can for now. I'm not 100% happy with how this turned out, but it's still pretty good and sounds pretty unique amongst Genesis covers, I think.
I spent probably about two and a half months fiddling with parts of this song getting it to sound like it does now. Keep in mind that's two and a half months where I only spent an average of like 2 hours every other week, but then I put in like 8 hours this week to finish it off once I could see the end was in sight. If I were to guess, I probably spent somewhere around 20 hours making this one... figuring out the song to the extent that I did (which isn't even close to perfect), tweaking the instruments, removing and changing what plays in what channels, etc.

I decided to train myself a bit with a cover of The Noble District of Toal from Ys II. This song was exported to SPC format and plays on real SNES hardware. I created the song in OpenMPT from samples I put together from royalty free sources and converted to SNES format myself.
UPDATE: 7/10/2022
Well, I was kinda dumb here and used samples that were a little too big. I reduced and relooped when necessary and the song sounds almost the same, just a little fuzzier as I had to reduce the frequency of some instruments. The difference isn't worth re-upping it in my opinion so I'm leaving this one up. Lesson learned, though!
I used multidumperGUI to break the channels into individual wave files and I then used Corroscope to create the oscilliscope views for those channels. I edit all my videos in Davinci Resolve.
Notes for this one... hooboy where do I start?
I recently was hired to do some SNES music for a project I can't discuss yet. The only problem: I had never done SNES music before. So, I had to start somewhere. And yes I was honest about that to the person that hired me if you were wondering... it doesn't do any good to lie about these things.
I hit up some tutorials and downloaded OpenMPT. You can use it to create your tracker file in IT format and when you're done you can use a tool like SNESmodlite to convert it to SPC for use on an actual SNES. You have to put your samples into very specific formatting. Looping samples have to have a sample size divisible by 16 and the loop area also has to be divisible by 16... which makes working with the samples a pain in the butt.
Anyway, I used the Genesis version I created of this song a while back as a guide to make this one, so I threw this one together over the course of about 9 hours or so, including sample work and tweaking. I had fun learning about it even though it was equally frustrating at times. But hey, ya gotta do what ya gotta do.
I hit up a few tutorials online (and there are shockingly few compared to stuff like Deflemask) but I obviously have a lot to learn. I think this came out pretty nice for a first ever song, though!
Only glitch, when I converted to SPC format and then used multidumper to split the tracks into individual waves, for some reason it missed picking up one of the instruments. The instrument plays, it just doesn't show up in the oscilloscope view and this was supposed to be a quick thing so I didn't feel like hunting the issue down at this point, so for this video, you'll have to live with it, sorry!
Anyway, that's about it for this one. If you can recommend any really good sources for SNES music tutorials or information, I'd appreciate it!

Notes for this one... sorry it's been a little while. I'm ramping up to start a new full-time career and have taken on a few contracts for game music for multiple systems and have comittments to make for those now - I'd post the work but I can't do that yet since the games won't release for a while. I'm still going to work on hobbyist stuff like this from time to time, so this channel isn't going away, just slowing down a smidge.
Anyhoo, for this song I thought it wouldn't be too tough. And I was, as usual, totally wrong. The main melody and several other parts are off-beat in this and getting the timing close to the original was really hard because of that. Also, the arcade game uses an 8-channel YM2151 and also has 4 digital audio channels for playing samples. Squeezing all this down into a the 10 total channels of the YM2612 and SMS chip required some sacrifices - notably this time I had to cut out a couple of echo channels from the original and omit a few samples like the harps that play every now and then.
This isn't quite as exact as I wanted it at this point but I'm posting it now because I have to move on and work on some other stuff for now. I may come back to it later when I get a little free time to button the few rough edges that are still in it, since this is going to appear in a homebrew version of the game that's in development for the Genesis / Mega Drive right now!
One of the cooler things in this one is that I mimicked the orchestra hits entirely in FM since the DAC was already in use for the percussion track.
Anyway, that's about it for this one.

Notes for this one... I'm getting fully back in the swing of things. Decided to work on this song so I could create a few instruments to refine for later use. The song itself was pretty simple, this one was all about spending time getting the instruments to sound as good as they could.
I made all the instruments from scratch for this one. Started from literally nothing, not even prior instruments I made, because I didn't want to have a bias for using some that I'd already done that might not have been as accurate. For the Cello, I'm using two channels so essentially I made a single 8 operator instrument. Same for the flute that comes in around one third of the way through.
As usual, coaxing anything string ensemble-like out of the Genesis is pretty much impossible and the strings are the only aspect of this that I'm really not happy with, but I just can't improve them any further. In the SNES game, the string sample they use also has two samples in it at two different octaves, which I compensated for slightly by playing a lower octave in the PSG sound channels at the same time where possible.
Overall, I'm pretty happy and think this is probably the closest song to the original yet from my FF6 stuff. But I might be biased, so you folks can let me know if I'm wrong about that.
Anyway, that's about it for this one.

Here's my Sega Genesis / Mega Drive cover of Awakenings from Final Fantasy VI aka Final Fantasy III US. This was created in the paid version of Deflemask and as always runs on actual Genesis / MD hardware.
I used multidumperGUI to break the channels into individual wave files and I then used Corroscope to create the oscilliscope views for those channels. I edit all my videos in Davinci Resolve.
Notes for this one... this song was... well... surprisingly easy! The complete opposite of what I normally say in these things! I've been playing it on piano/keyboard since the game was new and I had it mostly right before I started, which is always handy. A lot of this stuff I've been doing covers of I never even attempted playing before.
I finished thhis one in under two hours, but I let it sit overnight and then I came back and tweaked some instruments. Hopefully it sounds better than before... but you'll never know, I guess! Mainly it was the strings, when I listened to the song again today, I just didn't like them. I still don't like them, but I don't like them less now. String ensembles are just so hard to reproduce in FM. Sometimes I can get them sounding OK in a range or by themselves when there's one note, but having them work well in chords and stuff is just a different story.
Physically, it's still hard to work on these things after shoulder surgery. The shoulder still experiences painful spikes every now and then and I can't sit at a desk in a chair for too long, even one with arms on it. Oh well. I have a little more motion back now, hopefully this pain will start to fade soon because it's not fun and it makes doing anything difficult.
Anyway, that's about it for this one.

Notes for this one... hoo boy. I was excited to see the latest version of Deflemask added support for the SMS FM Sound Unit (FM2413). Couldn't wait to try and do something in it, despite the pain from surgery still being fresh and persistent. I spread this out over a few days so I could rest my arm between sessions.
So, I thought this would be a relatively easy copy/paste job from the Genesis version. Much like with the SMS PSG version where I thought that, I was completely wrong, of course. Why? Well strap in and I'll explain!
The Sega Master System FM Sound Unit is very different from the Genesis' YM2612. How different? First, it has 9 FM channels. That's right... NINE! Which is awesome. Unless you need to use percussion. Then you lose three of them while percussion is playing (channels 7, 8 and 9). And let's talk instruments. All the instruments are predefined like a music keyboard, you just pick the one you want and go. You are also allowed to manually define ONE instrument of your own. And those instruments only use two operators and are a lot simpler than the 4 operator sounds you can create with the YM2612.
Oh and percussion? That's pretty nuts. You get just a handful of predefined percussive sounds. A kick drum, snare, tom, cymbal crash and hi hat. That's it. And they all SUCK. Oh, well.
You might be wondering "Hey, can you use the SMS PSG at the same time as the FM Unit?" Well that's interesting. On the Mark 3 where the sound unit is an add-on device you CANNOT use the PSG and FM Unit at the same time. On the Japanese SMS with the FM unit integrated into it... you can! But no commercial games did. In Deflemask you can use both at the same time. just keep in mind that work on everyone's actual hardware.
Other than that, I had to figure out some of the idiosyncrasies of how this stuff works on the 2413, there are some weird drum kit bugs that can create extra sounds by accident. I got all of those cleared up except one, but it sounded OK where it was so I left it in. And apparently the chip decides which channel, 7, 8, or 9 the percussion sound plays in. Despite this, you can't use say one drum channel and 8 FM channels. You either get 6 FM and 3 drums or 9 FM and 0 drums. Just how it is.
It was fun to mess around and learn this despite the problems and I'll probably do so more here and there, but will continue to mostly focus on Genesis stuff.
Anyway, that's about it for this one.

You can download a demo of the game (with this song and another of mine in it) from the game's Kickstarter page which will be fully live on Tuesday 1/25/2022. Here's the link for that:
This was made with the paid version of Deflemask. I used multidumperGUI to break the channels into individual wave files and I then used Corroscope to create the oscilloscope views for those channels. I edit all my videos in Davinci Resolve.
Notes for this one... OK, yeah, I took inspiration from some early Final Fantasy games for this one, but its still an original work not repeating any of their notes, sequences or structures. I wanted to create what an original Final Fantasy battle theme might have sounded like if Square ever made a game in the series on the Genesis. It'll also fit the pace of the battles for Affinity Sorrow itself, which will have combat remiscent of the Active Time Battle system from the 16 and 32-bit FF games.
I made all the instruments from scratch, but modified some from my earlier songs in order to get the sound I wanted out of this one. Hopefully this conveys the pace and excitement of combat while also sounding unique among Genesis cartridge based RPGs!
Once again, this song had to be small to fit the storage budget and the completed VGM is only about 84k. It might be possible to shrink using other methods or rebuilding it in a different music platform, but unless that becomes necessary, it'll stay as is. I may adjust some volumes for the final game to make sure the sound effects can be heard over the music OK, so this might end up a little quiter in the completed game.
Anyway, that's about it for this one.

Yes, this is a teeny bit of self promotion, sorry, but it IS the Genesis music I've been working on lately! If you want to support me and my work directly... I've set up Patreon and Ko-Fi pages:
I composed the song in the paid version of Deflemask. I used multidumperGUI to break the channels into individual wave files and I then used Corroscope to create the oscilliscope views for those channels. I edit all my videos in Davinci Resolve.
Notes for this one... composing original music is generally a lot tougher than covering existing music. You're starting from scratch and trying to come up with something that fits the mood for what's going on in the game at that time.
For this song, it'll play when you reach a town that has some problems that you'll learn about while exploring it. I tried to give it a tinge of solemnity, hope, and mystery. I created these instruments from scratch, although some I modified from instruments I made for some of my prior songs.
Also, I have to keep all the songs in this game relatively small to meet the storage space budget we have for the game. The VGM version of this song is about 85k. I might be able to get it smaller using other tools, but it's right at the range we were aiming for so I probably won't worry about shrinking it further unless it becomes absolutely necessary. Some sacrifices had to made to get it that small, but overall I'm still pretty happy with it.
This is a song that while making it... I thought it was kinda nice, but not super great. But it really grew on me the more I listened to it and now I'm really happy with it. If you aren't thrilled with it at first, give it a chance by listening to it a few times!

Notes for this one... this is my first complete Sega Master System song ever! It's based off my Genesis version. I thought it'd be pretty easy to copy and paste parts of that into this. And well, that part WAS easy. But it needed a LOT of modification to get it sounding decent and a lot of sacrifices had to be made in going from the 10 channel original down to the 4 channels of the SMS.
There's some arpeggio in a few of the instruments, lots of manual volume adjustments, lots of vibrato adjustments, a little echo here and there, and stuff like that to try and give it some variety. I know it still sounds a little bit empty, but in order to use the parts of the song I felt were most important, it kinda had to be this way. I did add some rhythm to it that's not in the original to help fill it out a bit.
Leave me a comment and let me know how you think it came out. Or if you're an SMS music whiz, tell me what you might have done differently.

Notes for this one... first, sorry for the delay. Had dental and medical stuff done that pretty much put me out of comission for two weeks. I expected to be down for about two days, but what can you do.
I did this song for Master Linkuei to put into his Genesis homebrew port of Splatterhouse. It may not make it to complete game status, but that's cool, what he's done so far looks great and I recommend checking it out here: youtube.com/watch?v=RcSG_RRZePE&ab_channel=MasterLinkuei
I always find it tough to work in discordant songs with off timing and this song is one of those. I didn't base it on any specific version of the game. It's sort of a mixture of the arcade and TurboGrafx-16 versions along with a few original parts thrown into the extra channels that the Genesis soundchip offers. I don't usually ADD parts to songs I cover, but I put in some stuff that I feel helps this one sound a little more distrubing and uncomfortable.
Personally I think it came out pretty well, but I never know what anyone else will think. Leave me a comment and let me know if YOU liked it.

So this song was musically pretty easy and also short, so this one onyl took a few hours to complete, which is a nice change from the stuff I normally do. The arcade version of the song is a little weird. The TG16/PCE version sounds a little empty. So, for this one, its kind of a remix, I sorta of took sections from both of those versions and I added my own new percussion to it to get the end result you hear in this video. I sacrificed the third PSG tone channel (PSG 2) so I could have good percussion on the PSG noise channel.
In the end, I like how i came out. But I don't know what everyone else will think, so leave me a comment and let me know if YOU liked it.

Notes for this one... where to begin. Lost Painting is musically much less complex than the last three songs I did from SotN. And yet, I spent probably more time on it than the others, which I told you in the past were notoriously difficult. How did that happen?
The biggest problem for Lost Painting is that its instruments are full of echo, reverb and complex synth sounds that are impossible to reproduce accurately on the Genesis' audio hardware. In the end, I think what I did sounds pretty close considering the hardware, but it some areas it lacks the fullness of the the recorded track that appears in the real game. Oh well, what can ya do?

Notes for this one... well, needless to say, this one was really tough. The fantastic original song is very orchestral and definitely not conducive to being reproduced on the Genesis' sound hardware. Obviously I couldn't make the instruments sound natural like they do on the original, but hopefully you'll like what I was able to get done on the Genny.
I tried doing this song last year and had to give it up because it just wasn't coming together well. I still have the in-progress version from back then and it sounds hilariously terrible. Oh well, that's why I never finished that one. I was able to get it done now thanks to the extra experience and skill I've developed working on all the other songs up to this point.
I love the music in Octopath, but I don't know if I'll do any more from it since this one was so difficult to get sounding decent. But who knows, there are so many great songs in it I may still come back to it in the future.

Notes for this one... after the SF Alpha songs I've been working on which have on the whole been super complex, I wanted to do something quicker, easier and different from that game as a palette cleanser, so to speak. And here we are! It's always a challenge trying to craft realistic sounding strings on Genesis. This certainly isn't a match for the original, but i think it's pretty close.
I'll probably do another song from FF 4 and then move on to a few more from SF Alpha, I've apparently still got five to go including two of them that are likely to be super hard.
Back to this song, the original uses all 8 tracks available to the SNES. On the Genesis, I set it up so that it uses five FM channels, the DAC (percussion), the PSG noise channel (more percussion), and 3 PSG tone channels. So yes, there are ten tracks in this version. The extra two provide some backup and help fill out the main melody string ensemble sound, which is created with two FM channels and one PSG channel.
This song is super short so I looped it 3 times, it'll play a total of four times in this video before fading.

Notes for this one... I thought this one might be pretty tough... but it was the easiest song in the entire game for me to do! What a relief, after the giant pain that was Guy's theme with its weird timing. I did use extended channel 3 mode for this one, giving this song a total of 12 unique tracks. Channel 3 handles some low back up guitar accompaniement, the bongos, and some organ backup.
Why was this song easier than the others? Mostly because it repeats its percussion and bass without much change and the timing is intuitive in it. Easy doesn't mean it's bad or the composer wasn't skilled. Just that it wasn't a total nightmare for me to reduce and bring over to Genesis!

Notes for this one... I thought this song would be pretty easy. I thought wrong! It has a lot of fast parts that are pretty low volume in the original and of course, like with Rose's theme, Guy's theme really makes use of all 16 tracks of the arcade hardware so squeezing it down into 10 on the Genesis was a little tough.
I decided against going extended channel 3 mode for this one. Fewer, well defined instruments just worked better than more, less defined ones. It cost me the ability of having a few more echo tracks but I think the trade off here was worth it and translating these songs onto limited hardware is all about figuring out the best tradeoffs.
In the end, while it obviously doesn't sound like the arcade version because of hardware differences, I think it captures the spirit of it pretty well for the Genesis hardware. Maybe you disagree, I don't know. Let me know what you think in the comments.

Notes for this one... this song was mind numbingly difficult to keep everything straight in. Why? I'm using Extended channel three mode to get three extra tracks and the 16 track q-sound arcade version repeats a lot of tracks but with slight variations throughout the 16 and also changes things up within them from time to time. Aside from that, I still didn't have enough channels on Genesis (13 with ext 3 mode vs 16 for the arcade) so cuts still had to be made, primarily in the form of echo channels and the loss of an organ or two.
This one was a bit of a struggle, but I think it came out pretty decent in the end. Hopefully you'll agree. Either way, feel free to let me know what you think in the comments.

I used the bones from the original song, updated the timing, updated all the instruments, added lots of fancy effects and viola, dramatic improvment. Could it still be better? Probably. Notes for this one... not a whole lot to say. Before I started this one I thought it was going to be hard, but this ended up being the easiest song from Street Fighter Alpha that I've done so far. Why? It only uses about 6 instruments total (not including percussion)... but it does so on 16 tracks in the CPS2 arcade version.
For this one, they used several tracks for qsound surround, so they basically just repeated several tracks a bunch of times. Not criticizing the composer, this song sounds great in the arcade version, but thankfully because it wasn't loaded up with unique parts like some other songs (cough, Chun Li's SFA theme) it was actually pretty easy to get it going on the Genesis without any serious cuts.
The samples are a little large so I may look into cutting some of them a smidge shorter and maybe lowering the frequency on a few. Anyway, that's about it for this one. Also this uses full range for the PSG noise channel to simulate some cymbals and shakers, so no PSG 2 for this one.

Notes for this one... I originally made my first version of this song about 7 months ago and put it on my gaming channel. You can check it out here: youtu.be/x1aYAsJZg_Q. That version wasn't bad, but I have a lot more experience now and know a lot more about creating instruments and effects, so I thought I'd clean it up and it'd be a quick easy project.
Well, it wasn't so quick and easy. I found a few mistakes in the original, I moved things around to different channels, I changed where stereo was used, I added a lot of different effects, I totally overhauled or tweaked every instrument, I re-recorded the samples, I completely changed the timing of the song, I moved one track to PSG and I added a second track to back up the lead trumpet. And other stuff I probably forgot about.
Personally I think it sounds way better now than my earlier attempt. You guys will have to let me know what you think. I think there's still some room for improvement but that this is the best I can do right now.

Notes... this is one of my favorite songs in the game, I remember just sitting there and listening a bunch of times while letting it play. Even though it's musically fairly simple, and I mean no disrespect to the amazing Yuzo Koshiro, it makes for an incredibly challenging song to bring to the Genesis.
Why?
Because it's so hard to do realistic sounding FM strings and this song really relies on realistic strings. The original uses either 6 or 7 sound channels simultaneously depending on where you are in the song. I used the PSG with echo (so two channels) for the main flute, which left pretty much no space for fancy echo effects. I used plenty of tricks to get a fuller sound in this one, but it would have been great if the 2612 had 8 FM channels instead of 6. Oh well.
What's also really tough with Genesis music is setting the parameters in the operators for certain sounds. What does that gobbledygook mean? Well, its easy to get a nasty clicking sound when your notes play on an instrument depending on how much sustain and decay there is in the operators that control the sound. You can usually eliminate it by reducing those parameters, but then you lose the qualities that make the instrument sound good, so it's a tough balancing act.
With all of that out of the way, hope you enjoy it!

Notes for this one... I always liked this song, I thought it was super impressive when ActRaiser and the SNES were brand new. I wondered if I could coax a reasonable version out of the Genesis, so I planned to just tinker around a little, but I was so happy with it, I decided to finish it up. I hadn't intended to actually do the whole song.
The strings/weird FM orchestra hit combo instrument that's most prominent in the opening could stand to sound a bit smoother, but I think I've done the best I can with it at this point.
Hope you all like this Genesis cover of an SNES game's music!

Notes for this one... this song was really hard to do. It was about 60/40 by ear, confirming with sheet music. The sheet music wasn't completely accurate so it made this kinda tough. Also, doing good strings on the Genesis is really hard, which didn't make things any easier since they're one of the primary instruments in this song.
In the end, I think it came out pretty decent considering the hardware limitations. This doesn't use any fancy tricks, no noise channel magic, no DAC and no extended channel 3, just regular old Genesis music (FM and PSG).
This is for Pigsy's SotN Genesis remake/demake. But it'll be a while before he gets to use this one!

Well, I did something different this time around. This song really needed some extra polyphony, so I forced myself to learn how to use the YM2612's extended channel 3 mode that lets you split the third FM channel (technically FM 2 since they start at 0) into its four individual operators.
Depending on the sound algorithm you choose, this will allow you to basically split the complex sound of this one FM channel into multiple simpler sounds that can play independently. So for this song, for the first half, I use algorithm 6 which lets me split FM 2 into 3 different, but simpler, instruments. The second half uses alogrithm 7 which lets me split FM 2 into four different very simple instruments.
It took a while to get the hang of making it sound decent since the instruments are so much more basic and some have to work together, but I think I finally got the hang of it by the end.
This will be the last Alpha song for just a little bit. When I come back to it soon, I'll try my hand at doing Adon's awesome theme.

Once again this one was tough to bring down to the Genesis/MD. The arcade game uses 16 sound channels, and uses them a LOT in this song... even with 16 some channels still share instruments and they have tons of echo going for the Qsound surround. I had to bring all that down to 9 channels on Genesis.
Why 9 instead of 10? Well, I'm running the PSG Noise channel in its full range mode and when you do that, you can only have PSG 0 and PSG 1 running with tones. If you use PSG 2, you lose out on the full range noise mode and get a limited range 3 note noise mode instead.
Now that's fine for a lot of things, but in this song I used the full range noise mode to create shakers, cymbal crashes, triangles and tambourines, so it was more important to have the full range noise channel than another square wave channel.

This one was a bit tricky because the CPS2's sound chip has 16 channels and this one uses most of them simultaneously in many parts of the song, including 4 channels dedicated to percussion alone. How did I get all that percussion into this version?
Sneakiness!
I created a few samples for this one, many of which were layered with up to four tracks when I exported them. This means I could have up to four sounds in a single sample. Most of the samples I created are either solo or have two instruments at once. The three cymbal crash sections each have four instruments in the sample as do the drums right before the loop.

This one was a bit of a breather from the super difficult last few songs. Don't get me wrong, it's complex, but it's short and I could use tools to quickly figure it out unlike the last three songs I've done. The biggest challenge with this song was coming up with a substitute for the orchestra hits used a LOT throughout the original.
First I tried making my own, and it was bad. Then I tweaked it and it was a little better. Then I learned some new commands and it got a little better than that but I still wasn't happy. So I sampled all the orchestra hits and, well, they just didn't sound good with the Genesis music. So I went back to the drawing board and created something that has some of the same sonic properties as an orchestra hit but sounds a little more unique.
I'd love to hear your opinions on if you think it works or not in the comments!

Yeah, so, this was WAY harder to do than the Symphony of the Night songs. Once again, I can say this is the hardest song I've ever worked on! With this one it was tough to get the piano sounding right and I'm little bummed it doesn't sound as much like a piano on the low tones but I did what I could - I actually use four different piano instruments throughout this song.
The biggest problem here was kind of overloading the sound chip resulting in clicks and pops. It took a LOT of work to eliminate most of them and get this final song as the result. I spent three days just eliminating click sounds from notes at different parts throughout the song.
In the end, I think it was worth it as while no one will mistake this for the real thing, it's probably about the best I could have ever hoped to do on the Genesis sound hardware myself. This song only uses the 6 FM channels, no samples and no PSG.
I did this song to help teach myself sheet music. But oddly enough, I decided to base it on a live recording instead because that version had more nuance. So, I went about 70% off the sheet music and then the final 30% by ear.

Last time I said Dance of Gold was the hardest song I ever worked on for Genesis. Well, now it's this one, this was WAY tougher. The song itself is more difficult with major timing changes and the symphonic sound was really hard to approximate on the Genesis' sound chips. Hopefully, I did an OK job, I'm sure you'll let me know one way or the other. I'm contributing this to Pigsy's remake/demake project.

This is probably the hardest song I've ever worked on for Genesis. Recreating anything with symphonic music is tough on the hardware as it just wasn't made for that. For this one, I did it about 90% by ear and 10% based off a score for the parts I just couldn't hear clearly enough in the real song. I'm contributing this to Pigsy's remake/demake project.

The first half is pretty faithful to the arcade original minus the electric guitar that I used to replace a high pitched 'twang' from the arcade opening. The second half uses a lead section that's a little more similar to the NES version for a little added variety. Plus I love using my FM piano and distortion guitar so hey, why not.

This one was tough since the original uses 16 sound channels and on the Genesis we only have 10. The arcade board uses four channels just for percussion alone so that's what was cut back the most. Obviously the instruments don't sound as good as the powerful mid 90s CPS2 arcade hardware running the original, but I think it turned out pretty well, overall.

This one was kind of a pain since it leaned heavily on DSP effects on the SNES original. I used a combination of effects and manual volumes and not stops to create the echoey sounds and a lot of grunt work to create the strings.

I created or tweaked all the instruments and did a lot of work on the organs in particular. I used drum samples from a free pack somewhere on the web, can't remember where. I took them, converted them to 16khz, tweaked them with effects and added reverb to mimic the percussion from the original song as closely as possible.
