A group of amateur planet sleuths is helping researchers online in the hunt for Earth-like planets far off in outer space.
The voluntary planetary detectives recently bagged two potential planets, even as funding to continue collecting the data may be threatened.
Since the launch of Planet Hunters in December (planethunters.org), 40,000 web surfers have helped in the search for new planets by crunching data collected from NASA's Kepler mission (kepler.nasa.gov). The $600 million mission launched in 2009 to search for Earth-like planets beyond our solar system, also known as exoplanets.
The citizen scientists hit pay dirt with the discovery of two potential exoplanets, according to a study published Sept. 22 in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
"This is the first time that the public has used data from a NASA space mission to detect possible planets orbiting other stars," said Yale astronomer and exoplanet expert Debra Fischer, who helped launch the Planet Hunters project. "As soon as I saw the Kepler data, I knew this would be a great project for citizen scientists."
However, with the belt-tightening in Washington, the Kepler mission's leader told The Atlantic that he's worried about possible budget cuts as the project nears the end of its first three and a half years.
"There is a serious worry that Kepler's funding might not be extended," Bill Borucki, a space scientist at the NASA's Ames Research Center, told The Atlantic. "If we care about finding out if we're alone in the universe - and we do - NASA and Congress have got to come together to find $20 million for this small mission."
The Planet Hunters chase down exoplanets for free. For the last several months, the star-gazing desk jockeys helped professional astronomers analyze light from 150,000 stars with the hope of finding orbiting Earth-like planets.
The group spent a total of 60 years of man hours and found two potential planets rotating around their respective suns at a breakneck speed - 10 and 50 days. One of the candidate planets could share a similar size to the Earth. Astronomers said they doubted the planet could support life because it likely didn't contain liquid water.
"This crowdsourcing is just what people want," said Sara Seager, planetary scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who is not involved with Planet Hunters or Thursday's report. She further explained that although the Kepler data set was of high quality, having an extra 40,000 pairs of eyes looking over the data could be a good method for finding patterns a computer might miss.
"I can emphasize, from painful personal experience, how good the human brain is at finding signals that look like transits as compared to a computer algorithm which isn't allowed to deviate from specific instructions," she said. "It's not surprising, expected even, that a few planet candidates slipped through the Kepler protocol and were rejected. At the same time, crowdsourcing is not supposed to find all planet-candidates either."
Researchers have already identified 684 exoplanets, according to PlanetQuest, the planet hunting information arm of NASA (planetquest.jpl.nasa.gov), a number that continues to grow.
The Kepler mission added 1,200 more exoplanet candidates that excluded the two new Planet Hunter finds because of various technical reasons.
Astronomers previously used the Doppler method to detect planets. A planet zipping around a star will cause the star to wobble from the planet's gravitational tug. The Planet Hunters team identified exoplanets by another method that involves finding subtle shifts of a star's brightness as an exoplanet moves in front of a star.
September has been a robust month for planet discovery. An international team announced the discovery of 50 exoplanets at a September conference on Extreme Solar Systems. A couple of days later, researchers from the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif. announced they had identified a Saturn-sized exoplanet that orbited around two stars.
Planet Hunters users are now sifting through the next 90 days's worth of Kepler data in the hopes of adding to the count. "This is what we found after just a preliminary glance through the first round of Kepler data," Fischer said. "There's no doubt that, with each new round of data, there will be more discoveries to come."
For now, the two exoplanets remain unnamed, but Fischer said the next step could be for the Planet Hunters to vote for a name.

Astronomers using ESO's world-leading exoplanet hunter HARPS have today announced a rich haul of more than 50 new exoplanets, including 16 super-Earths, one of which orbits at the edge of the habitable zone of its star. By studying the properties of all the HARPS planets found so far, the team has found that about 40% of stars similar to the Sun have at least one planet lighter than Saturn.
The HARPS spectrograph on the 3.6-metre telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile is the world's most successful planet finder. The HARPS team, led by Michel Mayor (University of Geneva, Switzerland), today announced the discovery of more than 50 new exoplanets orbiting nearby stars, including sixteen super-Earths. This is the largest number of such planets ever announced at one time. The new findings are being presented at a conference on Extreme Solar Systems where 350 exoplanet experts are meeting in Wyoming, USA.
"The harvest of discoveries from HARPS has exceeded all expectations and includes an exceptionally rich population of super-Earths and Neptune-type planets hosted by stars very similar to our Sun. And even better — the new results show that the pace of discovery is accelerating," says Mayor.
In the eight years since it started surveying stars like the Sun using the radial velocity technique HARPS has been used to discover more than 150 new planets. About two thirds of all the known exoplanets with masses less than that of Neptune were discovered by HARPS. These exceptional results are the fruit of several hundred nights of HARPS observations.
Working with HARPS observations of 376 Sun-like stars, astronomers have now also much improved the estimate of how likely it is that a star like the Sun is host to low-mass planets (as opposed to gaseous giants). They find that about 40% of such stars have at least one planet less massive than Saturn. The majority of exoplanets of Neptune mass or less appear to be in systems with multiple planets.
With upgrades to both hardware and software systems in progress, HARPS is being pushed to the next level of stability and sensitivity to search for rocky planets that could support life. Ten nearby stars similar to the Sun were selected for a new survey. These stars had already been observed by HARPS and are known to be suitable for extremely precise radial velocity measurements. NASA's STEREO spacecraft and new data processing techniques have succeeded in tracking space weather events from their origin in the Sun's ultrahot corona to impact with the Earth 96 million miles away, resolving a 40-year mystery about the structure of the structures that cause space weather: how the structures that impact the Earth relate to the corresponding structures in the solar corona.
Despite many instruments that monitor the Sun and a fleet of near-earth probes, the connection between near-Earth disturbances and their counterparts on the Sun has been obscure, because CMEs and the solar wind evolve and change during the 96,000,000 mile journey from the Sun to the Earth.
STEREO includes "heliospheric imager" cameras that monitor the sky at large angles from the Sun, but the starfield and galaxy are 1,000 times brighter than the faint rays of sunlight reflected by free-floating electron clouds inside CMEs and the solar wind; this has made direct imaging of these important structures difficult or impossible, and limited understanding of the connection between space storms and the coronal structures that cause them.
Newly released imagery reveals absolute brightness of detailed features in a large geoeffective CME in late 2008, connecting the original magnetized structure in the Sun's corona to the intricate anatomy of an interplanetary storm as it impacted the Earth three days later. Planetary science is the scientific study of planets (including Earth), moons, and planetary systems, in particular those of the Solar System and the processes that form them. It studies objects ranging in size from micrometeoroids to gas giants, aiming to determine their composition, dynamics, formation, interrelations and history.
It is a strongly interdisciplinary field, originally growing from astronomy and earth science, but which now incorporates many disciplines, including planetary astronomy, planetary geology (together with geochemistry and geophysics), physical geography (geomorphology and cartography as applied to planets), atmospheric science, theoretical planetary science, and the study of extrasolar planets. Allied disciplines include space physics, when concerned with the effects of the Sun on the bodies of the Solar System, and astrobiology.
There are interrelated observational and theoretical branches of planetary science. Observational research can involve a combination of space exploration, predominantly with robotic spacecraft missions using remote sensing, and comparative, experimental work in Earth-based laboratories. The theoretical component involves considerable computer simulation and mathematical modelling.
Planetary scientists are generally located in the astronomy and physics or earth sciences departments of universities or research centres, though there are several purely planetary science institutes worldwide. There are several major conferences each year, and a wide range of peer-reviewed journals.
The Solar System is made up of the Sun and all of the smaller objects that move around it. Apart from the Sun, the largest members of the Solar System are the eight major planets. Nearest the Sun are four fairly small, rocky planets - Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars.
Beyond Mars is the asteroid belt - a region populated by millions of rocky objects. These are left-overs from the formation of the planets, 4.5 billion years ago.
On the far side of the asteroid belt are the four gas giants - Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. These planets are much bigger than Earth, but very lightweight for their size. They are mostly made of hydrogen and helium.
Until recently, the furthest known planet was an icy world called Pluto. However, Pluto is dwarfed by Earth's Moon and many astronomers think it is too small to be called a true planet.
An object named Eris, which is at least as big as Pluto, was discovered very far from the Sun in 2005. More than 1,000 icy worlds such as Eris have been discovered beyond Pluto in recent years. These are called Kuiper Belt Objects. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union decided that Pluto and Eris must be classed as "dwarf planets".
Even further out are the comets of the Oort Cloud. These are so far away that they are invisible in even the largest telescopes. NASA's Kepler spacecraft has discovered Kepler-10b, its first confirmed rocky planet and the smallest transiting exoplanet discovered to date. Kepler-10b is only 1.4 times the size of Earth and has an average density of 8.8 grams per cubic centimeter, similar to that of an iron dumbbell. The planet orbits its star in only 0.84 days and is not in the habitable zone, where liquid water could exist.

The search for so-called exoplanets - planets orbiting around our sun is not, but to distant stars - is of paramount importance to you find an answer to one of the most probable most profound questions that mankind can ask: Are we alone in the universe?
ESO's observatories are equipped with a unique arsenal of instruments that allow to find exoplanets and to study.
With the VLT (Very Large Telescope) is the first time astronomers have failed to demonstrate the faint glow of a planet outside our solar system and so for the first time ever to depict an exoplanet.
This new world is a giant planet, about five times as massive as Jupiter, the most massive planet in our solar system.
This observation is an important step towards one of the main goals of modern astrophysics: to characterize the physical structure and chemical composition of giant planets and, ultimately, also from Earth-like planets.
With HARPS, the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (literally, the "high-precision radial velocity planet hunter"), astronomers have discovered no less than three planets orbiting nearby stars and have similar masses as the planet Neptune.
One of these planets has a mass about five times larger than Earth and is located in the habitable zone of its star. In this zone, temperatures prevail, in which water can exist in liquid form - the basic condition of life as we know it.
The astronomers suspect could exist, that it is a rocky planet is which, as our earth, has a firm surface on which liquid water. This discovery is an extremely important step in the search for planets where life could exist.
Another discovery was made with a network of telescopes spread across the globe, which include the Danish 1.54-meter telescope at La Silla. Using an innovative technique that makes use of the so-called micro-lensing effect in the bargain, a group of scientists discovered in 2005, the Earth-like exoplanet yet.
The planet has five times the mass of Earth, takes ten years to orbit its host star, and has very likely a rocky or icy surface.
Using the CoRoT satellite and the HARPS spectrograph of the ESO astronomers discovered the first "normal" extrasolar planets. The planet named Corot-9b regularly attracts over in front of a sun-like star, which is located at 1500 light years away from Earth in the constellation of the Serpent, and therefore can be analyzed in detail.
NASA astronomer Lucy McFadden and UCLA graduate Carolyn Crow recently made a discovery that will help identify characteristics of extrasolar planets. By comparing the reflected red, blue, and green light from planets in our solar system, they and their team were able to group the planets according to their similarities. The planets fall into very distinct regions on this plot, where the vertical direction indicates the relative amount of blue light, and the horizontal direction the relative amount of red light.
This technique works even when the source of the reflected light is visible only as a point, like exoplanets appear when observed through a telescope. Therefore, scientists can use it to identify earthlike planets more easily.

A book to accompany the program was also published. He also wrote the novel "Contact", the basis for the 1997 Robert Zemecki's film of the same name starring Jodie Foster.
During his lifetime, Sagan published more than 600 scientific papers and popular articles and was author, co-author, or editor of more than 20 books. In his works, he frequently advocated skeptical inquiry, secular humanism, and the scientific method.

ESOcast 20: Richest planetary system discovered
Astronomers using ESO instruments have discovered a remarkable extrasolar planetary system that has some striking similarities to our own Solar System. At least five planets are orbiting the Sun-like star HD 10180, and the regular pattern of their orbits is similar to that observed for our neighbouring planets. One of the new extrasolar worlds could be only 1.4 times the mass of the Earth, making it the least massive exoplanet ever found.

JWST will have a large mirror, 6.5 meters (21.3 feet) in diameter and a sunshield the size of a tennis court. Both the mirror and sunshade won't fit onto the rocket fully open, so both will fold up and open once JWST is in outer space. JWST will reside in an orbit about 1.5 million km (1 million miles) from the Earth.

The mission will spend three and a half years surveying more than 100,000 sun-like stars in the Cygnus-Lyra region of our Milky Way galaxy. It is expected to find hundreds of planets the size of Earth and larger at various distances from their stars. If Earth-size planets are common in the habitable zone, Kepler could find dozens; if those planets are rare, Kepler might find none.
In the end, the mission will be our first step toward answering a question posed by the ancient Greeks: are there other worlds like ours or are we alone?

Have you ever wondered what makes these cosmic fireworks? Meteor showers are just colorful debris of a passing comet or occasionally , the debris from a fragmented asteroid. When a comet nears the sun, its icy surface heats up. This causes clouds of gas, dirt and dust to be released, forming a tail of debris that can stretch for millions of miles.
As Earth passes near this dusty tail, some of the small dust particles hit our atmosphere. They burn up and create great celestial fireworks for us to enjoy.
NASA generates meteor shower forecasts to prevent potential hazards to spacecraft that are launching and orbiting Earth. NASA also monitors these showers to check the accuracy of the forecasts.

So where are all of these small neighbors? Millions of rocky chunks called asteroids orbit in a region between the four rocky inner planets and the four outer gas giant planets. The Dawn mission is currently on its way to investigate Ceres and Vesta, two of the largest asteroids. Beyond Neptune, there is another swarm of objects made mostly of ice and dust. This is the disc-shaped region known as the Kuiper Belt, the origin of many comets. Some comets originate even farther out, from a giant shell of objects near the edge of the Solar System known as the Oort Cloud.
