#105: Wide-Rim Airbrushed Piece (Sped-up Live Stream Edit)

M. Saban Smith Woodturning 2023-12-18 | Here is an edited version of the Live Stream from 17th December '23.

It is an airbrushed 13/14" popular (tulip) piece decorated with a combination of Intrinsic Colours and Carnival Colours from Hampshire Sheen.(Black, Raven Black, Pear Green, Forest Green, Super Green, Earth, Burnt Orange, Lavender Violet, Mediterranean Blue, Egyptian Blue, Hero Red, Orange Orange.
Finished with Hampshire Sheen Professional Sealer Spray, Cellulose Sanding Sealer and Professional Clear Satin Lacquer.
Turning it was simply a case of using a 3/8" bowl gouge, 1/2" spindle gouge and a point tool.
The rim was sanded from 120 to 1200grit to enable airbrushing without sealer.
For the grass, I used various masking tapes from 3mm to 20mm, including a bendable 'tape for curves'.

Christmas Stencils - Creating the Cover Artwork

A Look Back At SWAT, Dallas and Houston

M. Saban Smith Woodturning 2023-09-21 | Having returned to the UK and a heap of work from the US over a week ago, Natalja and I have been working flat out to get it cleared so we can concentrate on moving forward on the run up to the Harrogate Show in November.

As I say in the video, we are very grateful to Craig and the team at Wood World of Texas (woodworldtx.com) for their hospitality whilst we were with them. They made being so far from home very easy!

Thanks too, to those turners who dropped by our position at SWAT symposium in Waco, made a purchase and stood watching one of my demonstrations . . . and likewise to those who took one of the lessons with my back in Dallas the following week.

Out time with Rebecca DeGroot (instagram.com/rebecca_degroot) was all too short. We'll have to see if we can arrange more time next year perhaps.

Day-Demo: Axminster Tools, Newcastle. 15th April.

#104 Turning a Two Part Sycamore Bowl

M. Saban Smith Woodturning 2022-07-04 | Having a large lathe, I thought it time to stick a large piece on it for you. I wanted to create a single curve bowl (no foot on it) and a tray type base to sit it onto, with the base being able to be used as well as the counterpart bowl.
This video is an edit from a live stream presented on 25th June. You can watch the stream here: youtu.be/7-yN_yetJws.
The finished sycamore bowl and base is approx 18" x 4"
The piece was turned using a combination of 1/2" and 3/8" bowl gouges from Robert Sorby with a spindle gouge to trim the tenons.
For the rim, I used Black and Ruby from the Intrinsic Colour Collection whilst the base edges were done with Hampshire Sheen's Gloss Black Lacquer.
To finish the bowl, I used a few coats of the Hampshire Sheen Danish Finishing Oil.

TIU E4: Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)

M. Saban Smith Woodturning 2022-03-27 | For this episode of 'The Tools I Use and Why I Use Them', we take at look at the Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) I use when turning.
In particular, we look at impact protection for eyes (face shield and safety glasses) and face and lung protection, too (respirator and dust mask).

You will notice that the faceshield in the background with the yellow headpiece is not mentioned. I removed this from the video as personally, I do not recommend them. The visor over the face is not very stiff. Although being inexpensive, a little more investment can afford you the Honeywell with the stiff frame round the visor.

The PPE I use in the workshop is my choice, and it is your choice in your workshop, too. I recommend using the best kit you can afford ensuring that it has an impact resistance rating and that you use the most appropriate kit for what you are turning to give you the best protection. The kit shown in this video may not be suitable for you and you are advised to research PPE for yourself before making a purchase.

#103 Turning A Wet Oak Crotch

M. Saban Smith Woodturning 2022-03-11 | Turning wet wood is a joy, and this oak crotch piece (which is a customer commission) was indeed a joy to turn.
In the video, I take the piece from a rough cut piece of branch into a super looking bowl using a 1/2" bowl gouge and 3/8" bowl gouge, plus a 3/8" spindle gouge.
Wet wood can be troublesome, particularly if there is some spalting creeping in as there was in this piece.
During the process, I also use a custom made curved too rest (available from The Woodturning Shop) and a vacuum chuck to help.

#102 Simple Lightbox Product Photography Technique with a Smartphone

M. Saban Smith Woodturning 2021-04-20 | Presenting your products for sale is important. In this video, I show you how I use my trusty lightbox to take top-notch photos of wood turned items and other products for use online using just my phone.
Good photos are vitally important for communicating the visual form of products online. A clean background like the one used here ensures that the product is 'front and centre' in the shot and there is nothing for the viewers eye to be distracted by - perfect if your photos are going to be used for selling your items.
There are of course, other ways you can take product photos - lifestyle shots are good in certain places like magazines or boutique websites etc, but for the most part, a simple square format is good enough for most selling websites - and social media!

Martin Saban-Smith RPT - An Introduction

M. Saban Smith Woodturning 2021-03-31 | My name is Martin Saban-Smith. I am a member of the Register of Professional Turners working out of workshops based to the rear of my family garden centre in the village of Four Marks, in Hampshire in the south of England. We are to be in countryside, just outside the South Downs National Park.
Most of my turning is shared on social media with the workshop originally being in our garage at home. After a while, I later took over a building on the garden centre where I converted the potting shed into a turning studio and teaching environment.
In 2015, I started developing a finishing wax that quickly expanded to become the popular Hampshire Sheen range of products that are now shipped all over the UK, Europe, South Africa, the USA and Canada. Most of the products are unique to the company and made by hand right here at the workshops.
During the COVID pandemic, I teamed up with well known turner Les Thorne and together we started a new business called The Woodturning Shop. We took over two further buildings when Les moved his workshop and equipment to the garden centre. With a lot of help, we built a small retail shop, two new workshops and developed my original teaching room into a more professional space.
My lathe has now moved into a dedicated multimedia studio where Les and I present remote demonstrations and teaching and record videos for social media consumption. It is fully equipped with a Vicmarc lathe, Sorby Pro Edge, all the usual tools, a 7 cameras media set-up and plenty of other tech.
My own work tends to be more creative, expressive and more colourful than functional, although I do enjoy mixing the form and figure of pieces with a certain amount of functionality. Wood, to me is a canvas my artistic side can be expressed upon. There is always something you can do to make even the most featureless piece of wood stand out from the rest.
Being able to share what I do and how I do it with my social media followers and clubs in a demonstration, remotely or in person, as well passing on my knowledge to students here is a tremendous privilege and an absolute joy.

#101 Using a Friction Drive to Finish Bowl Bottoms Professionally. Woodturning DIY Project

M. Saban Smith Woodturning 2020-11-01 | In this video, I take a look at making and using a friction drive for removing the chucking method used when woodturning bowls, and in particular, recesses. This method can also be used for reverse mounting bowls with tenons, or pieces that are not able to be reverse mounted onto cole jaws or in a longworth chuck.
For the friction drive chucking method, I used a 100x100x75,, (4x4x3") beech spindle blank which was then covered with a piece of neoprene approximately 100x100mm (4x4"). There is also a small cube with a tiny piece of neoprene on, too.

This is the first video using my permanent filming and live demo set-up and it features the excellent Vicmarc VL300 lathe that is available from Simon Hope at www.hopewoodturning.co.uk.

Autumn Update, Plus New Business and Workshop Tour

Funny Badgers and a Flip Top Bin (Funny Animals)

M. Saban Smith Woodturning 2020-07-19 | These three badgers have been visiting my aunt and uncle's house next door recently and have been making a terrible din as they try break into their bird food bin in the garden.
Last night, between about 1am and 3.30am, we caught them in the act with a camera trap aimed squarely at the bin.
Their antics working out how to get into the bin are captured here in 7 glorious minutes of these wonderful wild funny badgers stealing a midnight snack. We think there is a large male, a female and a juvenile all having a go at reaching the bird seed and peanuts at the bottom of the bin.
Animals do the funniest things.

#100 Wood Turning a Troublesome Sycamore Triptych

M. Saban Smith Woodturning 2020-04-14 | Wow, this woodturning project took ages to do! Today is 13th April, and I started it on 9th March! Not sure if I really like though. It kinda works, but I did learn a lot in the process.
This artistic Triptych is made from a block of 9x9x3" sycamore, cut into three equal spindles. They are then mounted onto faceplate with screws, turned, then rotated round each side, turning a fresh design on each face.
Each of the sides is decorated differently, as you'll see and when finished, creates an ornament with many different variations.
I turned most of it with a 3/8" bowl gouge, but also used a blow torch, Intrinsic Colours from Hampshire Sheen, metal reactive paints from Modern Masters, metal leaf and a pyrography pen to finish off the final side.

19 Top Tips For Looking After Your Workshop Whilst in Isolation

As wood turners and woodworkers, many of us have a workshop at our property, meaning we can still visit the workshop and make stuff.
In this video, I give you my top 19 tips on what to do in the workshop should you need something else to do, or you face another day of boredom.

#99 Turning a Double Sided Wood Spinning Top Arena Game

M. Saban Smith Woodturning 2020-02-17 | This week, I'm turning a double sided spinning top arena from a piece of beech and various offcuts of other wood species. This is a great project to turn. It's easy and fun to turn as well as being great fun game for the family to play when it's all finished. One side of the project is easy to play on, whilst the other side is more difficult - challenging players to spin their tops on a small platform on top of a column!

I used Robert Sorby gouges for this project and it was finished with Hampshire Sheen Sanding Sealer, High Gloss Wax and a Carnacrystalline Stick. The colours I used were Plum, Flame, Ruby and Honey from the Intrinsic Colour Collection.

How To Play
Your game features a two-sided solid wooden arena and a handful of wooden spinning tops. Each top is different and needs a slightly different technique to get it to spin for a long time. You will need the arena, two or more players, the wooden spinning tops, a timer, some note paper and a pencil.
Playing the game
• Decide which side you will play on. The shallow side is easier to use than the coloured side, so best start there. If you are playing the difficult side, insert the column into the hole in the difficult side of the arena.
• Take a vote on who goes first.
• The winner of the vote is player 1. They select a top from the bag, then the person on their left (player 2) selects and so on until each player has selected a top.
• One player is the designated timekeeper. The timing is started once the spinning top is freely set in motion in the arena. Timing stops when it has completely come to a rest.
• Play begins when player 1 spins their top in the arena by using their thumb and one finger only. The length of time the top spins scores points as below:
• 1-19 seconds – 1 point
• 20-39 seconds – 3 points
• 40-49 seconds – 5 points
• 50-59 seconds – 7 points
• 60-69 seconds – 10 points
• 70-79 seconds – 15 points
• 80-85 seconds – 20 points
• 86-89 seconds – 25 points
• 90-95 seconds – 30 points
• 96-100 seconds – 35 points
• 101-105 seconds – 40 points
• 106 – 110 seconds – 45 points
• 111 seconds – and over – 50 points
• If the top exits the arena or falls off the column (if playing the difficult version), the turn ends, and no points are scored.
• Once player 1’s spin has ended, make a note of the points and player 2 has a go with their top.
• Once all players have had a turn, the tops are moved one place to the left, so player 2 receives player 1’s top, etc.
• Round two starts with player 1 and their new top, then player 2, etc.
• The game ends when each player has played with every top from all the other players.
• The winner is decided by the player with the highest score!
• In the event of a draw, the players on the same score spin a random choice of top once more. The highest score wins. Or, if there is a further draw, spins continue until one remains who will then be declared the winner.
Variations
• Alternate each round between the plain and coloured sides of the arena.
• For a quicker game, each player chooses one top and the group plays only three rounds.
• Play only three (or more) rounds with each player choosing the first top they touch when they ‘shuffle’ the bag.
• Score 10 bonus points for the top ‘dancing’ or moving around the arena before stopping. Discuss or vote on whether the bonus should be awarded

#96 Woodturning a Four Part Ring Box

This week, I turn a ring box that makes an ideal project for those turners who love decorating their work as much as it is ideal for those who prefer plain items. When finished, this wood turning project will make an excellent Christmas, birthday or other gift for friends and family.
As a three or four piece project, you could use two or three contrasting species of wood to complete the project, light and dark, coloured and plain. Or if you are adventurous, why not try turning it using a hybrid blank.
For those who enjoy decorating, there are tall sides begging to be coloured, embellished, textured or left plain. The disc in the top is optional, but a textured, coloured, embellished contrasting wood, or hybrid inlay would make a very striking addition, and an interesting top-piece.
The column onto which rings are placed need not be this tall, of course. A highly polished piece though, when the box is first opened will be a splendid centre-piece.

#95 Glass-like Finishing with Lacquer, Sealer and Drying Oil (Woodturning)

M. Saban Smith Woodturning 2019-06-11 | In this week's woodturning video, I look at answering a viewer question about why and how I use an oil in my finishing regime on this coloured sycamore bowl.
I also look closely at finishing technique tips with a lacquer and getting a glass-like quality using a combination of Hampshire Sheen and Yorkshire Grit products.
A near perfect finish like this takes time, so don't rush it when using your Hampshire Sheen lacquer, and don't get the Yorkshire Grit too hot when using it.

#94 Scorched and Embellished Ash Vase Woodturning Project

M. Saban Smith Woodturning 2019-05-21 | Back again after a fairly long break with a scorched and embellished ash vase woodturning project.
It was turned between centres, then hollowed, coloured and burnt deeply with a blow torch.
The grain was then artistically embellished with Hampshire Sheen Gold and Bronze Embellishing Waxes. Here is a full list of the tools used:

#93 Pedestal Bowl from Coloured Sycamore and Oak

M. Saban Smith Woodturning 2019-01-13 | Turned 15th - 20th December 2018, this weeks woodturning project was a sycamore and oak pedestal bowl.

It was turned in two parts, both using Intrinsic Colours to dye the wood the required colours. The sycamore bowl was coloured using Earth, Honey and Flame colours whilst the oak base was coloured with black.

The bowl was then finished with Hampshire Sheen Danish Oil, Pre-Thinned Sanding Sealer and then High Gloss Finishing Wax. The base was finished with Hampshire Sheen Black Embellishing Wax and High Gloss.

#92 Black Walnut Candelabra Base

M. Saban Smith Woodturning 2019-01-06 | Turned back in November, this is a simple and elegant candelabra base that was a commission for local jewellery company Hallmark Jewellers.

The brief was to turn a base as dark as possible (because ebony wasn't to be found anywhere at the 300x25mm required) so we opted for American Black Walnut.

Standing on it (for a TV show) was to be a sterling silver and 22ct candelabra and 6 christmas cracker filligrees completed with over 300 gem stones including 1ct diamonds and 190 rubies!

The piece was finished with Black water based dye from the Intrinsic Colour Collection, Hampshire Sheen Black Embellishing Wax and Hampshire Sheen High Gloss.

#90 Rusty Elm Burr (Burl) Platter Woodturning

M. Saban Smith Woodturning 2018-10-13 | In this weeks project, I put my neck on the line again with what could be a controversial piece - an Elm Burr Platter with the top rim mostly covered with rusty paint!

The piece has turned out exceptionally well in my opinion and I love how the paints have turned complementary colours to the natural colour of the wood, and the texture the paint gives is a lovely contrast to the smoothness of where the piece was sanded.

The piece is 17.5" in diameter and was turned with nothing more than a Robert Sorby 1/2" Excelsior Bowl Gouge and an Axminster 3/8" bowl gouge.

Here are the other bits used:

Hampshire Sheen Gold Embellishing Wax, Danish Oil and High Gloss Wax;
Modern Masters Iron and Copper Reactive Paints, primer and activator spray;

To mount the piece off the main spindle of the lathe, but keep it on the chuck, I used the Woodcut Tools Woodturning Pro Mount which I found to be exceptionally useful and easy to use.
The fact that it keeps the piece on the chuck, but still movable enough to work on is brilliant. The handles are solid and the whole unit is superbly manufactured.
What I didn't show in the video was the bench mount I also received which will enable me to keep the piece on the chuck, and use the Pro Mount somewhere else in the workshop if I need to.
As an addition to the workshop, the Woodcut Pro Mount's capability to keep a hefty chuck and work piece securely mounted yet maneuverable is certainly worth it.

#89 Woodturning a Knotty Cedar of Lebanon Knotty Platter

M. Saban Smith Woodturning 2018-09-05 | It's fantastic to be behind the lathe again and woodturning a project for you to enjoy.

This week on the lathe is an 18" Cedar of Lebanon platter which was finished on the back with my makers coin from Awesome Merchandise and a couple of coats of Hampshire Sheen Danish Oil.

The front was turned thin and finished with a mix of Intrinsic Colours (Earth and Ruby) for a slighly reddy-brown colour. This was then coated with 2 coats of Danish Oil.

I used a Robert Sorby half inch bowl gouge and a 3/8 bowl gouge for the whole thing, and sanding arbors from Simon Hope.

#87 Turaco Sycamore Wood Turned Off Centre Platter

M. Saban Smith Woodturning 2018-05-16 | It's been a while, but I'm back with a new woodturning project video.

The project was turned over 2 days and was inspired by the colouring on a Purple-Crested Turaco I saw at a bird park near where I live the other day.

Made from rippled sycamore wood, the piece was turned off centre to save as much of the ripple as possible, coloured with water based dyes from the Intrinsic Colour Collection: Forest Green, Straw and Plum, to as closely match the colouring on the bird as possible. I used HoldFast 3" and 6" vacuum chucks.

Finished with Hampshire Sheen High Gloss and Original, the piece is 16" across.

For the turning, I used Robert Sorby 3/8th and 1/2 inch bowl gouges and a Simon Hope bowl sander.

#86 Owl! Sphere Jig Woodturning Project

M. Saban Smith Woodturning 2017-11-29 | Finally got enough time to film a project video and here is a very cute woodturned owl ornament.

For the sphere, I used the Paul Howard Sphere Cutting Jig which is a simply brilliant piece of kit, and a worthy purchase. The owl was turned (mostly) following the instructions he kindly sent me.

The sycamore owl was started off with a roughing gouge and a bowl gouge before moving onto using the jig. Then it was coloured and sealed before using the Hold Fast Vacuum Chucking System for turning out the eyes.

For the texture on the head, I used a Dremel and Saburr Tooth bit.

The base is a simple piece of London Plane, scooped out to allow the head to site neatly on it.

The colour used was my water based Intrinsic Colour Collection 'Earth' dye and the sealer was Hampshire Sheen Pre-Thinned Cellulose Sealer. The final finish on both items was Hampshire Sheen High Gloss.

Whilst this project used a brilliant sphere jig and vacuum chuck, it is also possible to turn it between centres and use a donut chuck for the eyes.
