Bike and Things
I almost got hit by a car going too fast for his turn, and after that was all over I then noticed the car in the background off the road. I had to watch the video to see what happened.

The bird feeder is from Meijer
1 part sugar, 4 parts water
The hummingbird was showing up before the feeder. The hibiscus plant, a solar red devil, may have helped attract it before getting a feeder.

The Race
In the Dirty Donut, you can sign up for the Donut portion of the race and stop at the donut stops. Every Donut you eat will take 5 minutes off of your time. I think the winner ended up eating 15 donuts.
I did the non-donut portion of the race, you just go ride like a normal race. Eating just does NOT sound good to me while riding. I think next year I will do the donut portion of the race. I think I missed out.
How it Went
I felt strong and fast in the first half of the race. It was a tailwind with hard pact dirt. The race's second half was quite the opposite: headwind and super loose gravel. I really struggled the last 10 miles or so.
What I Learned
Sit in with the groups and conserve energy. The second half of the course with its gravel conditions and the wind did not help much.
Also, I think next time I'll put the grade percentage near my speed, power, and cadence.

This was the third time I rode Barry Roubaix. Trained all winter and came out with a PR. Originally I chose Wave 5, but with how well winter training went, and how early we were able to start riding outside I moved up to Wave 3. Looking back at it, I would have been a little better off in Wave 2, but that's ok.
It's such a fun race. So many people. I'm not used to group riding and this time I made an effort at times to sit behind people to take advantage of the drafting, and protection from the wind. The first half of the race was a headwind, and the second half was a nice tailwind. Worked out perfectly as in the first half we were all bunched up, the second half was pretty spread out.

I'll have another full race video at the end of June for the Dirty Donut! First time ever doing that ride. Looking forward to it. If there is anything you think that should be changed or added to a full race video let me know. Things I can think of off the top of my head would be subtitles for when I talk. Also, spread out the elevation map more, and maybe get a mileage counter somewhere. I wish the elevation graph specifically showed what mileage I was at.

2024 Barry Roubaix - 36 Mile - Wave 3
This is the chaos that unfolded. I should have gone out fast to get ahead of it, but oh well.
Sager was also in decent shape.
36 Mile - Wave 3
This was the day after Christmas. Not often in Michigan we get to ride outside this time of year without dealing with the cold.

25-mile loop to the country and getting a few miles of gravel road in.

I mounted my GoPro under my Garmin, it's located in front of my handlebars. First time doing that. I love how easy, and how little preparation there is for that compared to the chest mount. I do need to get a small bike pack for up there to hold a battery pack if I want to record anything longer than an hour and not have to swap out a battery. Unfortunately, this did not capture my last half hour of the ride of getting back into Portage and hopping on to the celery flats.
I used Dashware to add the Telemetry Data, and Davinci Resolve to create the video. Dashware is an older program but does the job and it's free. I haven't had much luck with any other free programs.
Iceman Cometh Challenge is a 28-mile point-to-point race, starting in Kalkaska, Michigan, and ending in Traverse City, Michigan. There are almost 50 waves of riders with wave 1 being the fastest, and going first at 9am. Once all the waves are completed the Pros then take off around 2:30pm, and the earlier riders are waiting for them at the finish in Timber Ridge Camp Ground where the celebrations and beer is a flowing
Conditions
It rained the evening before and throughout the night so everyone was worried about the conditions. The course ended up being in excellent condition. The temperature was bout 55-60 degrees at the start and everything was wet but not a muddy mess. The rain in fact made the sand much easier to handle.
Me
This was my second Iceman. I am an amateur rider and only have done a handful of races. In the race I probably should have passed at times when I didn't; which hurt me on some hills and some down hills. My weakness I think is just on the flat ground putting out sustained power. I can handle the uphills and single track pretty decently; which is where I kind of got stuck behind people.

First time using VIRB Edit, as hard as I tried I couldn't get the Grade to line up. I think grade is always delayed when using Garmin, so it will always be off if I'm also trying to look at speed.
Al Sabo Nature Preserve in Portage, MI (South West Michigan). It's just under 6 miles of wooded trail and perfect for a gravel bike. It has a couple of punchy climbs and some flow to it, but it's mostly flat and winding through wooded goodness. With all the leaves it made it tough to see the roots so I had to ride a bit more cautiously.
There is a North side of the trail; which does not allow bikes, but if you take a bike over there you will see more elevation change, and much more potential to expand these trails.

If you are not into watching a full loop, with the real-world noises of nature, and me breathing, clearing my throat, and my bike creaking then you may want to wait and I'll try to make a shorter highlight video of all the sweet parts on the trail.
