What you see is what you hear: The audio signal is fed directly into the oscilloscope, where vector graphics are drawn with sound. Try it yourself! (works best with lossless audio files at high sampling rate)
left channel = x-axis
right channel = y-axis

Software oscilloscope that plays 4-channel WAV files in Anaglyph 3D: oscilloscopemusic.com/osci.php
What you see is what you hear: The audio signal is fed into a software oscilloscope in XY-mode, where vector graphics are drawn with sound. This is done twice, with slightly rotated images for each eye, i.e. four audio channels have been used. This video is in stereo because YouTube doesn't support 4-channel audio.
channel 1: horizontal deflection, left eye
channel 2: vertical deflection, left eye
channel 3: horizontal deflection, right eye

- draws a sine wave and shows the points that would be sampled at a certain sampling rate (doesn't actually change the sampling rate)

- aliasing artifacts: shows a possible different interpretation of the same sample points

note / error: When I did the screencap, the automation of the rotation field (big grey area on the right) wasn't recorded, that's why you can't hear or see it change. It usually works just like the knobs above it (rot x, rot y). I didn't bother recapturing, because most of the rotation in this video is done with the LFOs anyway.

Update: Oops, spotted a mistake at 1:05. pow~'s inputs are exponent (left) and base (right), so I did cos(t)^e instead of e^cos(t). However in this case it didn't make much of a difference and later in the video, as well as in the actual patch, it is used correctly.

download epic soundtrack: jerobeamfenderson.bandcamp.com/track/doot-doot
If working properly, this will be a great option for live performances (we're not entirely there yet), because:
- completely analog projection (deflecting coils are driven with the same signal as the speakers)
- very low latency (much lower than filming an oscilloscope with a camera and projecting it with a digital video projector)
- wide frequency range (more details possible than with laser)
- colors!
- can also be used to play arcade vector games
downsides:
- huge and heavy
- tubes are easy to destroy (by burning in) and replacements hard to get

This track is part of Nuclear White Noise • Nuclear Black Noise, a composition for continuous or discrete frequency spectra.
AUDIO
In this part only sine waves (discrete frequencies) were used. Using the harmonic series, i.e. integral multiples of the fundamental frequency, an unlimited variety of sound spectra can be created (additive synthesis). To produce these waveforms the open-source audio programming software Pure Data was used.
VIDEO
What you see is what you hear. Left/right channels cause vertical/horizontal deflection on an oscilloscope, which was filmed for this video clip. Each frequency's phasing differs between both channels, so that the waveforms look different on each, whereby complex interference patterns and shapes can be created (lissajous figures).
