BRAG Enterprises Employability Project abertayTV 2024-01-19 | Students from Abertay University are working with young people from Fife charity BRAG Enterprises on a unique new employability project focused on video game design.Based in Fife, BRAG Enterprises already deliver the No-one Left Behind Employability provision, funded through the Scottish Government on behalf of Opportunities Fife. The organisation are about to celebrate its 35th Anniversary so have a long history of supporting young people from disadvantaged communities who are unemployed that face multiple barriers to moving into work, further education or who are looking to work on improving their well-being and learning new skills.This innovative partnership project saw an eight-person student team from Abertay’s School of Design and Informatics work alongside a group of seven young people (aged 19-24) to conceptualise, design and deliver a playable game that will be the centre piece of their new Tech Hub venue in Leven.Taking a co-design approach, the young people took part in fortnightly workshops at Abertay to learn about the different stages of the process and the blend of art, design, technology and production expertise required to create a viable game.The vision for the game, a first-person action-survival experience set in a fictional Scottish castle, was driven by the young people, giving the Abertay students valuable experience of working on a brief set by a real-world client.This project has been supported by ongoing work of Abertay Game Lab, a practice-based research centre that aims to develop experimental games, applied games, and games-related cultural and public engagement events.Owen, a young person involved in the project said: “The games design course has been amazing in building confidence, meeting new people, learning new skills and finding out more about gaming. I have even applied to college to do games design after taking the course.”Dr Andrew Reid, Programme Lead for BA (Hons) Game Design and Production, said: “It’s been a privilege to work with such a creative and talented group of young people and this collaboration has produced a totally unique game that they and our students should be proud of. Widening access to University is a core part of Abertay’s mission and this project has been an excellent way of providing a flavour of the student experience and an opportunity for learning to our young clients, alongside a really valuable coursework experience for our students.”Rachel Piper, Employability Keyworker for Brag Enterprises says: “This project has been a fantastic experience for our young people, and it has been wonderful to see how much the group have grown in confidence throughout the last 15 weeks. They have developed a range of skills both specific to Games Design and wider skills such as communication and teamwork which will help them in whatever career they go on to have. Several of the young people who attended were inspired by the staff and students at Abertay University to further their own study and have now gone on to accept places at college to study Games Design!”Brian Robertson-Fern, who is the Managing Director at BRAG also said “This new approach is very much a BRAG house style now where we are trying new imaginative ways to engage with the next generation of creatives. Although BRAG Enterprises was originally developed as a result of the immense impact to the local economy of the pit closures in the mid-80’s it’s continuously evolved to develop new approaches that link those currently unemployed with the skills that will allow them and their communities to grow and prosper as technology changes.”Today, BRAG has grown to span three sites with 70 affordable workspace units across sites in Crosshill and Methil. From there it provides enterprise space for 40 diverse start-ups social enterprise businesses, with BRAG's own initiatives including employability, business support, and retraining activities providing back up. In the future, BRAG has plans to add a large tech and e-sports section to its Together Levenmouth Hub in Leven High Street and this game will form part of the new offer where others can also be inspired to think digital.
19 Days in the Coldest Place on Earth | Dr Rebecca Wade in Antarctica abertayTV 2024-01-18 | Topped by a sheet of ice which is almost three-miles thick in places, Antarctica is the coldest, windiest, driest and highest place on earth; and has a huge role in regulating the planet’s temperature.Dr Rebecca Wade, an Abertay University senior lecturer, was one of 88 women in STEMM on the Homeward Bound voyage to the frozen continent in November 2023.The leadership programme gave the Dundonian climate scientist a unique opportunity to observe the effects of global warming on Antarctica and the Southern Ocean up close.Dr Wade kept a video diary documenting her experiences on the voyage. The UK’s first Virtual Production over 5G screen test - AI Armageddon abertayTV 2023-07-26 | Abertay University is leading on a ground-breaking project that has seen Virtual Production movie techniques shot over a 5G network in two separate location for the first time in the UK.The test sequence (AI Armageddon) used the rapid bandwidth speed of 5G to connect industry quality digital backdrop screens in studios in Dundee and Manchester, allowing two actors to be filmed against a consistent virtual environment, without the need to travel to an exotic location, or be in the same room.Virtual Production is a new cinematography technique that uses computer-generated imagery (CGI), high-definition LED screens and motion capture to create virtual sets, allowing filmmakers and theatre directors to create large-scale digitally-generated environments to support real-time interaction, offering a faster, less expensive alternative to green screens.Led by Abertay University in Dundee, the 5G project is part of the Tay5G use case trial funded by the Scottish Government through the Tay Cities Region Deal and is supported by Dundee City Council, StoryFutures and Royal Holloway, University of London.A screen, part of which was previously used to film 2022 movie The Batman, was installed in Dundee in Abertay’s new Virtual Production Research Environment and was linked via 5G to a similar screen in Manchester.About Tay CitiesThe Tay Cities Region Deal is a partnership between local, Scottish and UK governments and the private, academic and voluntary sectors which seeks to create a smarter and fairer Angus, Dundee, Fife and Perth & Kinross under the headings Inclusive Tay; Innovative Tay; International Tay; Connected Tay and An Empowered Tay. The Scottish Government and UK Government will each invest up to £150 million in the Tay Cities Region Deal over 10 years, subject to final approval of robust business cases. This investment has the potential to lever in £400m of investment over 15 years.If every project and programme set out in the submission is funded and delivered, up to 6,000 job opportunities could be created across the tourism, food and drink, creative industries, eco innovation, digital, decommissioning, engineering, biomedical and health and care sectors. As of 30th September 2022, more than £219m of funding was approved for investment by the Joint Committee and over £74m of Government investment has been released. A total of 677 jobs have been created so far from the investment. Cyber 9/12 Strategy Challenge at Abertay University abertayTV 2022-11-02 | The Atlantic Council’s first Cyber 9/12 Strategy Challenge for Scotland was held at Abertay University’s cyberQuarter, Dundee on 18th and 19th of October, 2022. The event was held in partnership with the Atlantic Council’s Cyber Statecraft Initiative, the Scottish Government, Dewar Cyber Consulting and Abertay University.This edition of the Strategy Challenge was developed for college and university students in Scotland. Cyber 9/12 competitors assumed the role of senior policy advisors navigating a significant cyber incident targeting healthcare infrastructure.Student competitors gained valuable and realistic learning experience on technical, policy, and strategy aspects of cybersecurity. The competition included senior cybersecurity leaders from around the globe as judges who evaluated competitors as they navigated the cyber crisis.Thirteen post-secondary institutions across Scotland participated, including teams from Abertay University, Dundee and Angus College, Fife College, Forth Valley College, Glasgow University, Perth College UHI, UHI West Highland, University of St. Andrews, University of the Highlands and Islands and Napier University.Abertay cyberQuarter was officially launched on June 15 and is funded through the Tay Cities Region Deal by the University and the UK and Scottish governments. The £18 million hub will provide a new home for the Scottish cybersecurity sector where industry partners can mix with Abertay University students and academics, creating new solutions to global cybersecurity challenges through innovation, research and development.It will also be a place where established businesses can be based and start-ups can be supported, bringing inclusive economic growth to the area via the fast-growing cybersecurity sector.
