TURBOLIFT 1 demo / 2025 September System47 • meWho 2025-09-03 | 🛗 TURBOLIFT 1 interactive website mewho.com/turbolift1Here is a quick demo to my latest project, TURBOLIFT 1. It's a recreation of a beautiful display panel from the turbolifts in Star Trek: Picard. Kudos to the show's art department for creating such an elegant design. I found it so compelling that I wanted to recreate it as a semi-static display. My vision is for it to run on a large, ultra-wide screen, hung on a wall like a piece of digital art.🙂The original LCARS layout was composed by Star Trek designer Andrew Jarvis (https://ion.studio) who created the new LCARS style for the Picard series. The "circuits" overlay comes from another display on the show. It's taken a while to get here because Titan.DS's codebase has grown significantly over the last two years. I've spent the past several months reorganizing and scaling the app's internal logic. This made it easier to develop the algorithm for Auto Mode's controlled randomness, and I'm pretty excited to finally release it! This feature has been requested by several fans, with the first request dating back quite a while❤️ If you've used Auto Mode in my other projects: STARFIELD 47 & Project RITOS, you'll feel right at home🙂🟠 Titan.DS interactive website mewho.com/titan::: for HD screenshots, scroll down for links to my Google Photos & Flickr albums➡️ What is Auto Mode?Following a period of inactivity (Idle state), Titan.DS's Auto Mode transitions to the Active state and begins a series of subtle, randomized, autonomous animations:• Random tasks within the current module• Periodically switching to a different module• Occasional Red Alerts...The Auto Mode will revert back to its idle state upon any user interaction, such as clicking or keyboard interaction. Think of Auto Mode as a simulated user, continuously interacting with the interface. And it's almost like a screensaver when in fullscreen mode!➡️ Customizing the Auto Mode SystemAuto Mode is enabled by default. It can be disabled completely. First, locate the intermix ratio numbers -- it sits at 22:1 in the default condition. (Technobabble: it means 22 parts of matter reactant with 1 part of antimatter reactant) Then tap on the nearby plus/minus signs to change the reaction (animation) speed. The speed increases when the ratio gets closer to 1:1. Both Display A & Display B will be synchronized to the new speed. Tap the ratio number to reset it back to 22:1. It is based on the fictional UI seen on the starship U.S.S. Protostar in Star Trek: Prodigy.I learned a few tricks while making this project -- mostly related to the animated charts. It's all fun and challenging trying to find browser-efficient methods of animating those chart lines. I will try applying them to my Titan.DS project. Initially, I was attempting to fix the existing sound effect on the ten 3D DNA Pairs so that they would match a musical note scale. Previously, I had the audio pitch (PlaybackRate) change on a linear scale via Javascript. After some R&D, I adjusted it to a logarithmic scale. And that worked! Then, one thing led another, and I added a holiday musical section to the DNA module! I might have learned more about musical notation during this update than I'll ever need😂 Oh, one of the music clips is my very poor imitation of Data's Life Forms song from the Star Trek: Generations movie😬 See if you recognize it.🟠 Titan.DS interactive website mewho.com/titan❄️ Snowflakes Efx has also been added. It's inactive by default. This snowflake effect option is only available in December. It will be completely turned off after January 3rd. See below for my Patreon & Ko-Fi links.📘 This Spacedock (Sol Station 398392/ aka Probert Station) is based on a short LCARS video clip shared by ST: Picard's FUI (fictional UI) designer Andrew Jarvis on Twitter.➡️https://x.com/ajarvis_art/status/1650942889424216064And that clip could be briefly spotted in season 3. I made a few changes and added several interactive animations so that it could be integrated smoothly on the Titan.DS website mewho.com/titanA kind warning: I used a combination of SVG animation & CSS 3D transform to create the overall effect. It could be a bit heavy when running on a underpowered machine, resulting sluggish performance. And somehow Firefox crashes frequently when displaying this module, at least on my machine 🤷 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ **I will make a recording of this module and share it on my YouTube channel soon, so that everyone could enjoy this Spacedock animation without needing a fast computer.Anyhoo, besides being an interactive module, I've also repurposed those spinning mini LCARS to list out names of my project supporters on the Patreon & Ko-Fi platforms, as my special way of making shoutouts😉🧡 YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT IS MOST APPRECIATED! See below for my Patreon & Ko-Fi links.📘 In essence, I integrated my Starfield 47 project into Titan.DS website mewho.com/titan/. And a new module was born. I've named it the STELLAR CARTOGRAPHY module!You'll find the button for this module, labeled "STLR-CRTO", positioned just above the DNA Module button, towards the lower right corner of the main display. Once activated, Titan.DS will attempt to load the Starfield 47 website within an iframe (a website within a website). Due to the difference in UI design, the original interface of Starfield 47 wouldn't fit well with Titan.DS. To resolve this, I created a new UI layer within Titan.DS that would communicate with the SF47 iframe. You can still interact with the 3D Space in this module, just like in Starfield 47. 👉The keyboard shortcuts with Starfield 47 retain their functionality here as well. (Remember to click on the 3D Space before utilizing the shortcuts to ensure the module gains focus first.)Other enhancements include - -👉 The addition of an N-S CRTR button within the NCC-1701 & NCC-1701-F modules. This button toggles the visibility of the Nacelle-Sucking Creature👀👉 A clickable text field, sister ship Pegasus-C, has been added in NCC-1701-F module. When clicked, the ship name will change from Enterprise-F to Pegasus-C. The Odyssey class starship Pegasus-C serves as the flagship of Starbase 400😉👉 You can now smoothly change how fast the 3D DNA animation spins. Just drag the orange ticker above the 3D DNA to make it play faster, slower, or in a different direction👉 Keyboard arrow keys can now be used to change Titan.DS's display view. There's this one feature that I wanted to add ever since I saw an example on Babylon.js Playground website. It's a 3D star generated by using Babylon.js's awesome particle system. I finally incorporated it into Starfield 47 with a few modifications & randomization.So how to see the 3D big stars in STARFIELD 47? When the warp speed sits at zero, first turn on the Star Markers (STARS button) from the Control Panel (shortcut key T). Then click on any one of the star markers floating in the space to toggle the 3D big star. Double-click on the 3D star or the text marker to change the camera's zoom level. You can also use the shortcut key Y to focus on a random big star. Oh, black holes are out there too😉Other updates include:👉A bunch of keyboard shortcuts got added, including keys to control the mini LCARS display, etc. Check out the info page right on Starfield 47 website for a complete list (use the question mark '?' or "i" keyboard shortcut)👉The Event Notification text is now hidden by default. This can be changed in the Settings. It can also be toggled via Shift + N shortcut key.👉Maximum number of mini LCARS displays has been bumped from 7 to 9. I then wrote some code to create this 2D "assembly-like" animation using JavaScript+CSS. It was then integrated into my Titan.DS project.There are a total of 8 color styles. Throughout the animation, the styles were randomly selected. And many aspects of the "assembly" animation were randomized on each loop iteration. For example, the plates from the saucer module were always fly in from different directions at different times.For the purpose of this YouTube clip, I've removed the UI from Titan.DS. And a glow effect was added to the ship in the post with video-editing software. Several new ideas were born while I was developing this update. Major kudos to its art/design department!!All features from the 1st version were kept in this update. For the desktop experience, I've also added my own flavor of UI elements & animations for expansion.=== NEW FEATURES ===* RED ALERT: matching the alert symbol and animation from season 3. No red alert sound yet. It will be added on a Tuesday.* I purposely dimmed the outer UI elements so that the ship can stand out better visually. There's a dimmer button that can make the UI brighter.* Supporting ultrawide monitor (which I don't have, though it's popular among hardcore gamers supposedly). This is one of the experiments I put a lot of time in. It looks pretty cool. I made sure that the extra content on the sides can be viewed by folks with 16x9 monitors as well -- via the ZOOM button and two ARROW buttons to slide the content to left/right.* Live Screenshot Generator -- another experiment. Click the dedicated button to capture current screen for a screenshot image. Mainly for desktop, iffy on mobile. On mobile, one could easily take a snapshot using the phone's native function.* One unremarkable button will reveal the Odyssey class Enterprise-F. It shouldn't be too difficult to spot it :-) Let me know if you need help. Once revealed, the Enterprise-F can be shown in several color styles and with saucer separated from the secondary hull. ** Special shout-out to Starbase400.org. Here's link to his tweet:twitter.com/TerryMatalas/status/1621193745550155776From his photo, a top-down view of the starship is visible. Since I couldn't find a good reference image on the internet, I decided to use Terry's photo as a reference to construct my own version of the ship's top view in 2D vector format. Once that's done, I wrote some code to test out some possible animation with JavaScript+CSS on this new asset. Then I made the test animation to keep on repeating with a random preset on each loop.And here is the result - recorded from web browser for 1 hour. Project RITOS • Sickbay is Open System47 • meWho 2023-01-04 | Happy 2023! Finally finished adding the Sickbay section to Project RITOS. This has been a fun update to write -- trying to rationalize a fictional UI with 24th century technobabble and 21st century medical science :-) For the ECG/EEG/EtCO2 waveforms in particular, it was somewhat challenging to code them. The waves aren't fully randomized. I made a few waves during design, then during runtime they would get randomly shifted and scaled based on a vital's rate & strength...This Sickbay screen design is partially derived from the LCARS seen on Lower Decks. In the show, Cerritos's Sickbay LCARS always has an aqua color scheme. So I follow the trend :-)Also new in this update is the AUTO MODE feature. It's enabled by default. When prolonged idling has been detected, Auto Mode will kick in & start running an automation script that simulates user interactions with the screen. It has been great, and I love every single episode so far! In season 1, I did feel pretty neutral about the USS Cerritos. Though now it has certainly grown on me. So I decided to spend some time recreating its schematics (MSD / Master System Display).Surprisingly, Cerritos's MSD has been shown prominently in several episodes. Though the MSD from season 1 is a bit different from season 3's. The updated MSD seems to have a more "logical" internal layout. And in s03e05 the "Reflections" episode, there are a few shots of the MSD showing the engineering hull section. And THAT has been a great help for me. After cross-referencing materials from the Memory Alpha website, I started tracing & recreating the schematics using Figma. Hmmm...many educational guesses were definitely made during this process. Oh, I also borrowed a few internal parts from the Enterprise-E used in my System 47 project 🙂Right in Figma, the entire MSD was exported to an SVG file with various groupings & ID's so that I could manipulate them via JavaScript. The animations were achieved using a combination of several techniques:* CSS transition & animation properties* D3.js transition* SVG SMIL animation* SVG.js timeline & animate (I probably will drop this one out)Anywhooo, the final release will include more mini animations & interactivity. My goal is to publish this on my website before Lower Decks' season 3 wraps up. The goal is to provide unique chart/graph animations that are aesthetically pleasing, that's all 😊I structured the mini LCARS Display with 3 root elements: a frame, a graph type and an optional panel of buttons. Each element has its own degree of variations & randomness.1. Display FrameThe following properties are randomized: frame shape (rather subtle), blinking lights, color scheme, outline mode, frame title text & small decorative text.2. GraphCurrently I've programmed 9 graph types. When a mini LCARS Display is initializing, a random graph type will be chosen. More weight has been placed on ClipArt graph & SpaceImages -- I simply like them more. 😊 Within each graph type, I programmed in a lot of random variations so that two displays with the same graph type would still be somehow unique in their own way.3. Panel of ButtonsWhen a graph type is initialized, the button panel is also optionally created. And the button panel is set to be randomly placed on either the side of the graph. The button shape & text also get randomized. Just for fun... when clicked, one of the buttons in the button panel will reset the panel.What's your favorite graph type? See below for my Patreon & Ko-Fi links.📘 Whew... finally finished adding sound effects to STARFIELD 47 (mewho.com/starfield47). Definitely more challenging than I anticipated to mix sound variations & randomness with interactive elements 😬 Also, modern web browsers do not allow audio playback right from the beginning if there's no user interaction. This is a good thing in general. However, for developers, it's rather tricky to work out the AudioContext detection in Javascript.16 sound clips are used & mixed for various tasks in STARFIELD 47. And one of 6 different "whooshing" sounds is randomly used when the "space vector" is swinging.In the beginning, I noticed right away that when the same sound clip was played over and over again for the same task, it quickly became "stale" and annoying. So I added some code to randomly change the playback speed & sometimes the volume as well. The playback speed affected the audio pitch. This made the overall sound effects more dynamic.The background ambient sound is basically one clip played on a loop. On top of that, a short beeping sound is randomly mixed in from time to time.The whole background sound effect is kept on one soundtrack, and the "task" sound effects are placed on another soundtrack. With 2 different soundtracks, their volumes can then be adjusted independently by the user from the app settings.Feel free to leave a message right here on YouTube. The icons were traced and created using Figma, which I've recently started using. So far, I like Figma quite much. It is cloud based, so I don't have to worry about where the files are saved. Its UI is rather intuitive. And the vector graphics can be exported out easily as SVG or PNG. Perfect for what I need 🙂Oh, these are very abstract icons. STARFIELD 47 / devLog 2022 July 24 / Creating the circular Proximity Scan effect System47 • meWho 2022-07-24 | 🧡 Supporting/Funding my projects? See below for my Patreon & Ko-Fi links.📘 Are you watching the new StarTrek: Strange New Worlds (SNW) tv series? Highly recommended! Not only the stories & characters were great, the tech displays on the show were phenomenal. Between this series and Star Trek: Picard, there were so many eye-catching fictional user interface effects to enjoy.In SNW season 1 episode 7 "The Serene Squall," I caught this interesting circular scanning display on Enterprise's viewscreen. The show's designer Timothy Peel shared this display animation on his Twitter account, link below. I thought it'd be cool to emulate & integrate it into STARFIELD 47.(*** Nerdy thought: True that LCARS hasn't been invented during the time of SNW... Perhaps UI designers in the 24th century would still continue to use some dated technologies. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" should still hold true in the future ;-)From the beginning of this development, I quickly decided not to use CSS animation methods on DOM elements. Since this particular effect would cover nearly the entire viewing area, the performance penalty in animating large DOM elements would probably be too steep. So I utilized #Babylon.js 3D framework for this 2D effect.Instead of applying static textures on 2D meshes for the rotating circles, I used this high-performance polar coordinate shader that I'd learned from Patrick on Team Babylon.js. See his YouTube link below. Patrick's tutorial on this shader was extremely helpful. The advantage of using shaders was for the awesome WebGL rendering performance. Plus this shader could be easily hooked and programmed for animations via JavaScript.I am still more comfortable with CSS's transition & animation methods. They are simpler in concept. As for animating with Babylon.js, it's quite different & complex. Well, it has to be, since it is dealing with various properties in a 3D world. With all of its capabilities, I am only scratching its surface and using it mostly for 2D effects 😂 For this particular dev, I'm starting to get a little more comfortable with Babylon's animatables, targetedAnimation, animationGroup, speedRatio... And yet there are a ton more to be learned 😬Anyway, to activate this circular scan effect (which I named it "Proximity Scan" for now), click on the "cross target" icon from OPS area in the Control Panel. Double-clicking on it will change the scan's color. The scan's center square is clickable 😉Next update? possibly work on something related to the Shield, or reorganizing the "Settings" page so that more controls are exposed to users. No sound effects yet for SF47. That's still in the research phase. See below for my Patreon & Ko-Fi links.📘 When I started the STARFIELD 47 project, I was targeting for the modern desktop browser platform. Prior to this, the only touch screen tests I had done were right on my phone. Recently I was lucky to get a hold on an old PC laptop with touch-screen capability. And here's a recorded session of the test.The UX testing was mostly okay. The two-finger gesture for resizing the mini LCARS display could use some improvements. Since I chose not to spend too much dev time for touch devices, I used a helper library - interact.js - for the multitouch gesture. I do wonder how SF47 would run on an iPad...By the way, if you had the audio volume up while watching this video, the sound effects you heard weren't originated from STARFIELD 47. I borrowed the sfx from System47 ;-) Implementation of sound effects in SF47 is on my to-do list. Fortunately Babylon.js 3D framework does have a built-in sound engine. Fingers crossed.
