From 2nd album The Owl - 4 stars The Sunday Express.
"Fans of fast finger-picking folky guitar should invest in the new album by Poland-based Karl. If John Martyn, Newton Faulkner, Tim Buckley and Joe Gonzalez rock your boat, here's a new name to delight you"
4/5 stars, The Sunday Express
"Oh, I do like a nice owl, me. Always a sucker for the owls. On this CD, Karl Culley offers up 11 tracks of his relaxing singer-songwriter outpourings, with his fairly high-pitched voice kind of reminding me of Dave Brock from Hawkwind in their folkier moments, weirdly enough. That aside this isn't a lot like Hawkwind, though. Culley's from the Nick Drake school of hushed, introspective songwriting, but while this is quite a moody collection it doesn't have that aching loneliness and despair that make the likes of Drake or Elliott Smith such heavy going sometimes. It's more of a hypnotic, atmospheric sound here with a certain detached air about it that is quite inviting, and sometimes there's these tasty little skiffle-esque shuffles like 'Bound For The Ground' with gently strummed guitar that are totally upbeat and almost Paul Simonesque and are really lifting the weight off my shoulders a bit. This is a really refreshing and inviting record in the often-stale singer-songwriter landscape. Well worth your time."
