The video was made in April 1990, in the early dawn of South Africa’s transition to a non-racial democracy. The first ‘talks about talks’ were in May. No doubt, the desire for racial harmony and peace was on the late Soweto born singer Dan Tshanda’s mind. Director Nic Hofmeyr made an allegory, casting a group of multi-national children and turning the band into East Asian guerilla soldiers ready to lay down their arms.

TSEPO TSHOLA Ho Lokile Nic Hofmeyr 2021-07-22 | Tsepho took us to TY in late winter when the cherry trees blossom pink in Lesotho, to film the video for ‘Ho Lokile’. It was one of those load up the VW Microbus with gear shoots, and drive out of Joburg for a few days. I directed, Paul photographed and Pam produced. Tsepho showed me around his mountainous home, and together we picked the locations and cast the video from amongst his family and community. RIP Tsepho Tshola.

LUCKY DUBE Victims Nic Hofmeyr 2019-05-08 | Here for all the many Lucky Dube fans, is a belated but good quality upload, from my master tape, of Lucky Dube’s Victims video. The video was made in 1993, influenced by South Africa’s often violent transition. In an abstract way it reflects Lucky’s lyrics and what was happening in the country at the time.Watching the video now I feel so sad that Lucky’s life was taken the way it was, and I think of other friends and colleagues who died in the conflict or at the hands of criminals. The video was Directed by myself, Nic Hofmeyr. The cinematographer was Ralph Ziman (Director, Jerusalema) and Producer was Pam Devereux-Harris. The video was shot on location near Johannesburg. Art Director Aubrey Shelton transported the fuselage of a wrecked SADF fighter jet up to the top of the minedump we filmed on.

Written by Jennifer Ferguson, Rashid Lanie, Victor Ntoni and Ray Phiri, the song was recorded by some of the top South African artistes and musicians of the time. Astoundingly, the song was never released and likewise the video. The only time anyone heard the song was when it was performed live at Ellis Park stadium, Jo'burg, at a Nelson Mandela welcome concert in early 1990. Here it is; `The People Want Mandela', 23 years later. We salute you, our leader, our legend, our legacy. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.

Bright Blue - Rainbow Warrior Nic Hofmeyr 2011-10-07 | `Rainbow Warrior' by South Africa's Bright Blue celebrates the Greenpeace vessel of that name, sunk by French agents in 1985. Nic Hofmeyr filmed this live performance video in Cape Town in 1986, using Super8 film. Apartheid was still in full force, but the nearby Sea Point pool had just been opened to all races, stimulating the swimming images.
Bright Blue - Where Would I Go Nic Hofmeyr 2011-10-05 | Nic Hofmeyr directed this video for Bright Blue's `Where Would I Go' around 1987 or '88, taking the band on a road trip north to Limpopo, and filming the main stuff on a minedump outside Johannesburg, South Africa.
