Spa24hrs! An event that both BMW and Walkenhorst have had so much success at in the past, and thanks to a dream result at Indianapolis, BMW were leading the Manufactures championship. Spa24hrs 2020 was a unique event this year as it has never taken place so late in the year. This meant there would be more night running than day light running and the lower temperatures meant that this race would be completely different to any other Spa24hrs preceding 2020. The weather plays havoc with Spa during its normal calendar slot of July, so we knew that it would more than likely play a part in the race and the weekend. After the #35 BMW didn’t make it to Bathurst, the cancellation of Suzuka due to Covid and a lot of speculation as to whether the American round of IGTC would even happen, Round2 of the 2020 Intercontinental GT Challenge took place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway AKA “Brick Yard” as originally scheduled before the pandemic!The IGTC championship brings together some of the most legendary tracks in the world, and the new addition to the calendar, Indianapolis, lived upto that reputation!Indianapolis was finally the start of my IGTC season, having been given this opportunity at the beginning of 2020, I was more than ready to join the BMW Motorsport works effort that BMW had put together for their championship effort. After the build up to the big one, the Efiel weather hadn’t been on our side so far through the weekend & quali, but we took a chance and benefitted to line up P9 for the start. The weather wasn’t looking great for us overlooking the 24hrs, but our experienced team and crew knew that anything could happen… especially this year. Because of the delay to the calendar, the N24hr would be more during night hours than day hours! Something the race had never experienced before! This year there were no spectators allowed due to social distancing measures, meaning the race wouldn’t quite be the same both on track, with the lights and BBQs spilling on to the track, and off track with the mad parties and unique atmosphere! The final preparations before the Nurburgring 24hrs. Another big entry for this race as teams and manufactures could test their line ups and set ups one last time before the big one. Walkenhorst included! We would welcome normal South African Bentley Factory driver Jordan Pepper to the team to complete our line up for the big race which is very exciting. He would join Christian Krognes and I for the 6hr and Mikkel Jensen for the N24hrs. However there was a lot of drama in this event, even before it started. The RCN, an entry level time trial championship on the Nurburgring. One of the best ways to get into motorsport that I’ve discovered! It blurs the lines between track day driving and racing and it think it’s a great way to get into competitive motorsport on the Nurbugring and one of the best forms of entry level motorsport there is. I joined one of my students Bjorn, on his first time in the brand new Walkenhorst Motorsport BMW M2 CS Racing at the Nurburgring to guide him through his first RCN to become a racing driver! It was a great experience to share with him and boy did he have a baptism of fire! I’m pleased to say he did a great job to complete his first RCN with so many things thrown at him! The 2020 season begins.... kind of.... Walkenhorst Motorsport were suppose to field 2 cars in the 2020 Bathurst12hr, however only 1 car arrived from South Africa, meaning I was without a car. However with everything booked, I went to the event anyways to experience this legendary track and event! Part3 of 3 is RACE DAY! Follow the #34 BMW M6 GT3 car of Walkenhorst Motorsport as it takes on the Bathurst12hrs! A fancinating race to be a part of and watch, not the result BMW were hoping for in the end, but still a great event to spectate.
