I've been hand making bows for over two years and have always struggled to hold my bow staves steady whilst working on them with spoke shave and draw knife. Enough's enough! So I handmade a shave horse - an ancient type of foot operated vice perfect for wood carving, spoon making and - my interest - bow making. Traditionally used to prepare wood for the pole lathe, the shave horse has numerous other woodland and homesteading uses and is a perfect homemade companion when making bows. Using foot power alone, the stave is gripped tightly allowing the hands to work the tools. The story of survival on the great plains of East Africa. After six day's wildlife filming on Kenya's famous Masai Mara National Reserve I found that through my lens I had captured the story of survival. The so-called cradle of mankind is Africa, remains of our early ancestors discovered amongst their stone tools and simple art. It is remarkable to think that early humankind shared these vast grasslands, rivers and forests with spectacular concentrations of animals, foraging and hunting alongside predatory big cats and vast herds of grazing antelope.The struggle to survive is written across this landscape of life and death, reminders that our early ancestors lived and died here, steadily spreading across the globe. Today these grasslands are precious survivors from earlier ages, some of the biggest concentrations of wildlife to be seen anywhere in the world.

Applewood Smoked Cheddar Cheese

Mick Grewcock 2023-08-24 | Apple Wood Cold Smoked Cheddar Cheese

An easy entry to smoking food at home. Both soft and hard cheeses cold smoke well and need very little equipment.

This batch of UK Cathedral City Cheddar was cold smoked for four hours over a maze style smoker loaded with apple wood dust.

After smoking the cheese should be covered and left in the fridge to mellow for around ten days.

I vacuum pack the portions but cheese could be stored in a sealed container in the fridge. I portion the cheese into cheeseboard-size wedges.

Salmon Gravadlax. Forty-eight hour cure.

Mick Grewcock 2023-08-21 | Home made delicious salmon gravadlax (gravlax/gravad lax)

For two approx 1KG salmon sides (halve for one side)

Check flesh for pin bones and remove.

200g flaky sea salt
200g golden caster sugar
2 teaspoon black peppercorns
30-40 juniper berries
Zest 1 lemon
40-50g fresh dill
Dijon mustard as required

Blitz 50g salt, pepper, juniper, lemon, 20/25g dill

Add to remainder of ingredients and mix (reserving 20-25g dill and mustard)

One third in base of food grade box (pizza dough box is ideal), remainder spread over salmon.

Cover and fridge for 24 hours. Turn salmon over. The cure will have turned to liquid.

Return to fridge for further 24 hours.

Remove salmon, wash clean and dry well. Discard cure. Coat salmon flesh with thin layer of Dijon mustard and coat that with finely chopped dill.

Slice and enjoy. Accompany with pickles or honey and mustard sauce.

Freezes very well ideally vacuum packed and sealed. Keep in fridge up to a week covered.

I MAKE A HAZEL WOLF STICK

Mick Grewcock 2023-08-08 | I make a hazel Wolf Stick, a quirky walking stick made from hazel brash following coppicing and topped with a wolf's head cane topper from TheWolfCave Designs, Norwich, England, who can be found on Etsy.com.

It is a simple stick, not overfished and with natural bark grip with the shaft 'aged' with heat and applications of waxed boot polish and Danish oil plus a touch of silver paint to blend the wolf's head with the hazel shaft.

Why not make your own stick? It is easier than you might think.

I Take My Dad On Safari. Masai Mara Kenya

I make a knobkerrie style walking stick. Inspired by a South African walking stick that resembles a knobkerrie - a club-ended stick - I make my own from a bough of English elm, a short staff as might be carried on a pilgrimage with a nod toward the great history of the stick as a companion on the road. This video is the story of that stick.

Highways of the Forgotten - The Ancient English Footpath. An evocation of the footways throughout England that were created by our ancestors - a vast network of lanes, paths, bridle, and byways. Some of these hard-packed ribbons of earth have been trodden for thousands of years, linking village to village, farm to field, bakery to wheelrights, fish pond to rookery, church to grave yard. These are the highways of the forgotten, the trails of unknown millions who trudged the land to survive, to love, to farm, to fight, to gather food - to live. I'm in my seventh decade wandering these evocative but little thought of remnants of the past, our very history under the soles of our shoes.

The wonderful soundtrack is work of Trevor Kowalski who can be found on Epidemic Sound.

Agony! I Feared I'd Never Walk Our Woodland Again. Winter in Our Corner of England. In November I began filming the final part of my year-long series of videos documenting the changing wildlife and landscape of Our Corner of England. It is a modest acreage of family-owned woodland which is being regenerated from open cast coal mining in the English Midlands. For centuries, this part of the country was crisscrossed with railways which were built to transport what was then black gold - coal, along with other minerals and industrial freight. From Medieval times the landscape in this part of the English Midlands was mined and dug deep and surrounded by massive spoil heaps, pumping stations and foundries. It was a black, despoiled blight on the land until exhausted mines were closed, railways abandoned and the scars left to heal over as best as they could. Then the National Forest was a created, an ambitious 20th Century project to re-forest much of this land, to open it to the public, to bring back the flora and fauna to what was once poisoned and grim land. Our Corner of England is a tiny, privately-owned part of that massive project. As I filmed the land as it plunged into winter, I somehow damaged a nerve in my spine resulting in a severe case of meralgia parasthetica, preventing me from walking more than a few yards. One day in December I left the wood in for many, many weeks, virtually immobile and confined mostly to home and unable to walk our woodland. During this agonizing and worrying period, my trail cameras, looking out over our badger sett, were my eyes in the woods. This is the story.

Stunning South Africa. Thirty Six Years Late, I Reach the Cape of Good Hope.

Thirty-SIx Years After I Started, I Reach the Cape. South Africa. Zulu Battlefields, Garden Route, Cape of Good Hope. The joy of travel! In 1983 I set off to Egypt with the aim of travelling overland through Africa to Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. But after 10,000 miles of backpacking, thumbing lifts, riding trains, paddling canoes, I failed, running out of money in Johannesburg, South Africa - 900 miles short of my destination. That was nearly forty years ago. Since then I've yearned to complete the journey, to visit the places I'd hoped to see all those years ago on the way to the Cape. This is the story of that journey's completion - visiting South Africa's Anglo-Zulu battlefields of Rorke's Drift and Isandlwana then travelling down the Garden Route to Cape Town and finally heading south to the Cape. It's never too late to finish a journey.

Is This The End? Autumn in Our Corner of England. (CORRECTION: I misidentified a newt as a lizard in this video). Summer has left the countryside, autumn is undressing the trees and hedges. It is autumn equinox, half way between the height of summer and the depth of winter. I explore Our Corner of England, what was once an open cast coal mine that is now regenerating and returning to nature. I wander the woods and waterside during the day, surrounded by wildlife, and then I overnight in the thicket cabin during a storm. There is sadness and joy in autumn - and certainty. The certainty that we are on the path to winter..

On the Steps of Autumn. Our Corner of England. August - we call it summer - but nature knows different. Our meadows look exhausted, the gloss has faded from the leaves, fruit, nuts, and berries are swelling on the stems. It's a nice time to be in the woods: I use my pole lathe, shave horse and English longbow as summer heads towards its end. And as I walk our woods, I take a little harvest of firewood logs and when night comes badgers gather grass for bedding. We are truly on the steps of autumn.

Make Hay While the Sun Shines. Connecting with the Past in Our Corner of England.

The long days of summer signal the peak of the year in Our Corner of England - an area of woodland and water within the UK's National Forest that is being regenerated from open cast coal mining.

Beneath thunder-rumbling skies, I explore our little meadows and glades and we decide to cut the grasses and foliage in order to make hay. This meadow has not been mown at hay time for about 25 years and coarse, invasive plants dominate. The hay we make will be poor and virtually unusable but next year's hay will be much better. A 'hay cut' in July will begin the process of creating a hay meadow that favours certain grasses and flowering plants. The meadows and wood are home to muntjac deer, fox, and badger. We make our hay cut in the daytime and at night badgers move into the meadow to bundle up dry grasses to take back to their setts and line their bed-chambers. Under the same skies, humankind and badgers have made hay for centuries - and beneath my feet is the soil that our ancestors farmed. Here I find a connection with my past - and wonder about the future.

Time to Stand and Stare. Summer Comes to Our Corner of England. To the wonderful music of David Celeste, I explore Our Corner of England and its bird and animal life as summer arrives - cubs and chicks are everywhere and the meadows and glades are awash with wild flowers. June really is the best time to spend in Our Corner of England and perfect for a night under the stars. I sit by my camp fire as all around me the sounds of the night fill the darkness. But I feel a sadness at dawn. The bird song is rich but there are singers missing - the yellowhammer, and curlew, the turtle dove, and corncrake. They have declined or disappeared because our farmland has changed so much in the last hundred years and the affect on wildlife is deeply sad. But there is still much to enjoy in the woods and on the water at this time of year in Our Corner of England.

Ghosts in our Wood? Our Corner of England. Wildlife Cameras in the Thicket. Perhaps the most mysterious place in our woods, the thicket is a slightly scary tangle of wildness. Growing on the incline of an 170 year old railway cutting, the thicket is home to badgers, muntjac deer and foxes - but who else is watching? I imagine the men and their families who made this cutting nearly 200 years ago - maybe it's their history that is amongst the dark shadows of our thicket. But are their ghosts in the shadows? I place trail cameras sometimes called wildlife cameras throughout the thicket to record what happens there day and night.

Going Crazy? Go outdoors. I escape to Our Corner of England. April. When it all gets too much - when the din of modern living drowns our thoughts - it's time to get away. It's April in Our Corner of England and spring reminds me how vital green space is to us all. For countless centuries we all lived on the land, our lives ruled by the seasons and the rhythm of death and renewal. But today many of us are separated from all that nourishes and feeds us. In the age of climate change and global warming, when our land is being consumed by buildings and roads, when our skies are crossed and recrossed by tons of screaming aluminium and kerosene, it's vital that we reconnect with our earth. Our Corner of England in UK's National Forest is regenerating from open cast coal mining and it's here that I go for nourishment - it's a place to find peace and be reminded of all those in my family who worked the land, now remembered only in fading photographs. They would not thank us if we destroyed where we live.

John kindly invited me to visit his studio at the foot the beautiful South Downs in the UK to film him at work. Here is John engraving a lock plate and gold-inlaying left and right detachable locks for a .577 calibre double-barrelled sporting rifle. The lock plate is engraved with traditional English Rose & Scroll patterns - a beloved and iconic design that graces many of the finest English shotguns and sporting rifles. What's it like to own a piece of English Countryside? Our Corner of England is a year long series of video portraits commencing spring 2019 featuring woodland being regenerated from open cast coal mining. This episode highlights the threat to young trees from non-native grey squirrels and how we remember our parents in the names we give to special places in our corner of England. This second portrait was filmed during the month of March, a month of wind, rain and bursts of spring sun. Right in the heart of the UK's National Forest, Good Hope Wood and Lakes is our little corner of England - a fascinating insight into how life - bird, animal, plant and insect - returns to a landscape that was once black, filthy and exhausted from centuries of coal mining. The coalfields of the UK Midlands left behind a vast area of exhausted, dirty and virtually dead land which 25 years ago became the heart of a bold project - to create a new forest. Today it covers 200 square miles and contains nearly nine million newly planted trees - a vast and mixed habitat that is pouring life back into this once bleak landscape. Good Hope Wood and Lakes is just a tiny part of this vast project and the north western end of large woodland which forms an ecosystem of water and wood - many areas of which are open to public access and visited by tens of thousands of people each year. Good Hope is now family owned and managed - an area of land for native wildlife and for our family too, a little haven of peace in a busy world. Making Oak Shafted Arrows for a Heavy Draw Weight Flatbow. Happy the Man.

Making Oak Shafted Arrows with Gary Williamson, Shoot Captain of Mercian Bowmen, a fellowship of archers who practise the sport of roving marks - an ancient form of competitive archery calling for long distance accuracy with bow and arrow. I spend the day filming a video portrait of my good friend Mr Gary Williamson as he makes oak shafted arrows for his Joe Gibbs 93lb @ 30" flatbow. From an oak plank he cuts, planes and sands an arrow shaft which he then spines and makes up into an arrow for roving marks. Whilst filming Gary I was reminded how much satisfaction and pleasure comes to those who practise a craft with their hands in pursuit of their passion - and Dryden's poem 'Happy the Man' sprung to mind as I edited my film portrait of Gary.

How to Make Your First Long Bow from a Sapling. Light Weight Longbow for Beginners

Mick Grewcock 2018-12-15 | How to Make Your First Long Bow from a Green Sapling. Light Weight Self Longbow for Beginners. Here's a simple project for any of you that are aspiring bowyers - a very lightweight self bow in the style of an English Longbow designed to help beginners achieve their first success. I show you how to make longbow from scratch - turning a freshly felled sapling into a shallow-limbed 'longbow' to give experience understanding wood, bowyer's tools and aids as well as an insight into that perpetual bow making challenge - tillering a bow. The bow is deliberately made very light to help you achieve your fist success. Failure in the early attempts at bow making can be very discouraging and using green wood is a quick and easy way to gain some experience. Using green wood also reduces fear of failure. Making your first bow from a long seasoned and possibly expensive wood can be nerve racking experience which often results in apprehension - the fear of making a mistake. But green wood seems to alleviate this worry - after all it's easy to find green wood so you can proceed with more confidence knowing that getting another piece of wood will be quite easy. Mick Grewcock 2018-12-07 | 100LB Laminate English 'Warbow'. Final Finishing. Part Three. Third and final video in this series in which I show how a novice can gain some experience tillering a heavy weight English longbow by using a laminated pre-shaped stave. One of the biggest challenges for me during the making of longbows is tillering - the even distribution of tension and compression throughout the limbs. It always seems to me more of an art than a skill. Every single bow is a new journey - and not always with a happy ending. So when I was asked to make a video about how to tiller a laminate longbow I put it off for a long, long time. But one of the commonest questions I'm asked is "How do I find wood to make a longbow/warbow?" - and I have to admit the easiest way to obtain wood and gain experience in tillering is not finding some yew, elm or ash but by using a pre-shaped laminated stave. In this series of videos I show my method of tillering such a stave - and this final video I show how I complete and finish the bow.

India. How a Dog's Medallion Sent me Deolali. On the Trail of RA Richardson. In the 1950s and 60s, I grew up with words and phrases that have fascinating histories. A common saying when I was young was he/she 'has gone Deolali'. It was a phrase to suggest that someone was a bit crazy and mixed up. But I never understood why people said it in this way. By an odd coincidence, a late friend's bequest to me included a dog's medallion that said on it "Deolali '44-45'. The dog's owner was the late Richard A. Richardson, a professional wildlife artist and one of the UK's foremost ornithologists. Richard was in the army during the 1940s with his spaniel Willow. In his will he left his India diaries to the Alexander Ornithological Library in Oxford. I read the diaries and was captivated by the illustrations of birds and wildlife and details of army camp life in Deolali - and the after that it was only a matter of time before I too had 'Gone Deolali'.

Explanations of some phrases mentioned in the video:

"Moaning Minnie" said about a complainer. A moaning Minnie was First World War British soldier slang for a rocket artillery piece that made a distinctive moaning sound.

"Dim as a Toc H Lamp" said of someone who wasn't being particularly bright and articulate. Again First War and this time a use of Army phonetic language (different to today's). "Toc" was T, "Aitch" was H. A Christian based club for soldiers of any rank was quartered in Talbot House, shortened to Toc H (which organisation still exists). To be as dim as Toc H lamp refers to the subdued lighting of this and other buildings in wartime.

Forging Medieval Arrowheads

Mick Grewcock 2018-10-06 | Blacksmith Forging 12th & 15th Century Wrought Iron Arrowheads. A day in the forge with blacksmith & arrowsmith Will Sherman of medievalarrows.co.uk as he recreates three types of 12th and 15th Century wrought iron arrowheads - the originals of which are to be seen at the Museums of London, Blandford and Winchester.

Each arrowhead in this video is identified by either the Museum of London's or Oliver Jessop's typology:

First head: Jessop's type M2 mid 15thC now at Winchester Museum (original find Wolvesey Palace); second head: Jessop's type MP3 12th Century now at Blandford Museum; third head: Museum of London Type 16, 15thC.

Mick Grewcock 2018-09-29 | Spring Pole Lathe. The Mistakes I Made. Pt 2. Wood Turning Medieval Archery Blunts on a Spring Pole Lathe. Lessons to Learn. We think of Medieval arrow heads as vicious iron tips but it seems many arrows were in fact tipped with wood and were blunt. The Luttrell Psalter, a manuscript from the 14th Century, clearly shows archers practising with blunt tipped arrows. Which set me wondering - how were 'blunts' made centuries ago? So I had an idea that they may have been manufactured on an ancient type of wood turning lathe - and set about building one of these ancient devices in the woods to see if indeed I could make archery blunts for English longbow arrows with a simple foot powered lathe. But I soon discovered that whilst building a pole lathe is quite easy, using one is not. I started out using the wrong tools and had to teach my self the techniques of wood turning with the wrong equipment. So I bought some correct wood turning chisels and set about the task of learning the craft of the pole lathe in my woodland workshop using a shave horse to prepare the wooden blanks and then the tools and lathe to practise my technique.

Mick Grewcock 2018-09-21 | Building & Using a Spring Pole Lathe to make Medieval Arrow Blunts. Part 1. Isn't archery and its associated crafts and trades fascinating? I was looking at images taken from the 14th Century illuminated manuscript Luttrell Psalter and noticed that the archers depicted in an end-margin were practising using wooden-ended arrows - so called blunts. Blunts - walnut sized and shaped wooden arrow-heads - have been used for centuries both for practise and also stunning and killing birds and small game. But the image set me wondering: How, six hundred years ago, did they make these circular wooden arrow heads? Then I had a thought; I wondered, were they made on what is perhaps the oldest type of machine tool known to mankind - the spring pole lathe? And at that moment I decided that I would investigate whether or not my theory had any truth in it - could I, using ancient methods and tools such as a spring pole lathe and shave horse, make archery blunts on a spring pole lathe? Mick Grewcock 2018-08-31 | Blacksmith Forged Medieval Arrowheads. How to make medieval longbow arrows. Blacksmith Matt Lukes from Canada gifted me some awesome hand-forged arrow heads in Medieval style and in this video I show how I fit hand made arrowheads to arrow shafts and fletch them. I describe the simple techniques I use to fletch arrows, fit arrowheads and strengthen the nock if necessary. I show the materials I use including feathers, buffalo-horn strengtheners, blacksmith forged arrowheads and adhesives plus the tools and jigs that can aid production. Using carefully selected wooden arrow shafts suitable in spine, length and diameter, these techniques will produce a realistic looking arrow that can be used for clout shooting or similar when loosed from a heavy English longbow - the famous warbow.

Perhaps the saddest are messages I receive here and privately telling me of someone's attempts to make a bow that ended in what they consider failure. Maybe a smashed bow or a bad tiller - or one of many other obstacles to success that we learners encounter. One way or another, they feel a failure. But giving up is not the answer. Never give up. The best and most motivational words I was given when in business were these: keep going. So let's talk about that shall we?

Mick Grewcock 2018-07-20 | Will Blackthorn make a 100lb Warbow? I fail. I make a Medieval Style English Longbow Instead. Pt 3. A 100lb. In part three (the final part) of this series I continue work on my blackthorn stave (prunus spinosa) in the hope that it will make a 100lb Mary Rose pattern English longbow, a bow in the style of a Medieval warbow - the ultimate primitive technology weapon. But I fail - a knot in the wood begins to crack open the bark with the risk of total failure if the fractures spread through the wood. So slimmed down the bow to relieve stress on the knot and made a 55lb draw weight English Blackthorn longbow. Better a successful longbow than a broken warbow.
