Making music with !Coconizer // Acorn Archimedes Soundtracker Princezna Zmrzlina and the Wizard of OSC 2012-11-07 | This is how I used to make music a long time ago!Sorry, I forgot most hotkeys and stuff ;)Back then I could make a mod in half the time. :PAlso, this Acorn Archimedes Emulator is rather crappy with random sound drop outs and rather annoying keyboard lagggggg.Anyway, this is just to give you an impression of what was likely one of the best sounding eight track trackers back in 1990! It lacks MIDI and a build in sample editor though. duh!However !Coconizer mixes the eight tracks far superior than any Amiga or early Fasttracker routine. In retrospect it's astonishing that so few coders realized the potential that comes with MIDI support. Just think about the famous Protracker on Amiga, where it was dropped completely in later revisions. This lack of understanding for proper musical input devices reflects itself in the fact that even many "modern trackers" feature either zero or just very rudimentary MIDI functions.Once I discovered Cakewalk on Windows 3.1 I never looked back to trackers ;)It has to be said though, that tracking heavily influcences the way you compose music, and these limitations can sometimes yield suprising results.Also many modules back then sounded very much alike because everyone used the same samples and few had their own sound digitizers to sample new sounds.My "Dreamtracker" back then would have featured the simple good to read track view layout of Protracker (Amiga), the wave shaping functions of Future Composer (Amiga), the resonant filter emulation of AHX (Amiga), instruments with ADSR envelopes like in Fasttracker II (MSDOS), the Scanner view of the Mark II Sound-System (Amiga), auto loop functions for samples like in old Roland samplers and midi clock synch with support for midi CC and sysex. Somehow it never happend ;)Ah, add support for HardSID and Catweasel controller cards to that wish list ^^

backlash - Liberation Princezna Zmrzlina and the Wizard of OSC 2012-01-10 | If you can lose yourself in electronic sounds and dreamy melodies you will just love the Swedish synthpop project backlash.backlash was formed 1998 in Lidköping, Sweden by Oskar Lygner, Niklas Lundquist and Erik Torstensson. During the making of their first EP, Erik left the group to pursue another career. In the fall of 2000, Malin Andersson joined the team adding some fresh new vocals to their sound. The album Impetus was released on Memento Materia on August 28th 2001 and was hugely acclaimed by the press. Impetus was nominated as best newcomer and album of 2001 at the Scandinavian Alternative Music Awards. The success of the album was followed by live shows in Scandinavia and Europe. In the late autumn of 2002 Malin left the group as the sound moved on in another direction. As for the new backlash I'd recommend to listen to «Unconsciously Astray» from their '06 album release «Heliotrope». Also Malin loaned her voice once again on the track «The Wrench Of Parting».
I once had a house on Dantooine (Star Wars Galaxies / Gorath December 15, 2011) Princezna Zmrzlina and the Wizard of OSC 2011-12-16 | I did not play this game much at all after the NGE hit in 2005, but when I read Sony is going to shut down the official servers I just had to make a video of my interior decoration for my small flat on Dantooine :) Alien plants, artifacts and crystals I collected on some inhospitable planets as well as a whole kitchen build from in-game space junk. Oh my, I was really proud of that custom made chimney. In the cellar was a little studio for music sessions and holo chess ;) Too bad I had no time anymore to make a video of my space yacht which was completely decorated as a disco inside. (I even had some droids with fully operational fog and laser show modules, as well as my personal barman) What I really liked about the game were the multi-passenger ships, as you could invite other players onto your space ship and tripp-out together. Back then I spent most of my time in game as a singer/dancer, creature handler, tailor, interior and image designer. Sorry for the low fps and graphic glitches, something went wrong during capture and I had no time to redo it as these really are the last minutes on Gorath till the server was shut down.Currently (afaik) there is no 3D MMORPG on the market that comes even close to the open sandbox world of SWG, which once featured a completely player driven economy. Unlike EVE Online you also had a ground game with housing, crafting, player owned and administered cities, vendors, bars, theatres, communal elections etc. At last even atmospheric flight was possible on the planets. As the game evolved players could make missions and storylines for other players to play, using a mission designer tool for easy access to all kinds of in-game assets and NPCs (called Chronicle Master System). This allowed even none-roleplaying players to make their first guided steps into the world of storytelling and game design.Well, it seems not all hope is lost for the inhabitants of the Star Wars universe. (...in the unlikely case you have never heard of it before, you might enjoy this review: http://www.armchairarcade.com/neo/node/750 )Soundwise it is also a tribute to one of the first analog synthesis and sample playback routines for the Commodore Amiga written by Holger Benl and mastered to perfection by composer Felix Schmidt.The second half of the medley features some music from David Whittaker.Both composers have in common that they often programmed their music directly in their assembler text editor, instead of using any software-based music composition tools (like a tracker or sequencer). In my experience this approach usually leads to both - very playful tracks as well as paying great attention to the modulation of the synthesized sounds themselves (rather than using the next best sample from some library). Back in the early days of home computer music coders often created unique synthetic trademark sounds, which make their tracks instantly recognizable.
