I checked the inline fuses and internal fuse, all good. I buzzed out the comms cable from the control head to the main body of the rig - again all ok. Eventually it ended up with Geoff and by the next day he was on the phone to tell me it was repaired - a dried out cap. Geoff has repaired many examples of this Kenwood model, but this failure mode was the first of it's type he'd seen, which made the speed of the repair even more impressive. I was loaned a Quadrifilar Helix Antenna (QFH) for NOAA weather satellite reception Oxford Shortwave Log 2024-03-28 | Hi there, my good friend G0CQZ loaned me his QFH antenna to try out.These types of antennas provide circular polarization in your radiating hemisphere and the radiation pattern is not really affected by a ground plane. The repair to my Sony ICF-SW100 shortwave portable radio nearly went horribly wrong... Oxford Shortwave Log 2024-02-19 | Hi there, like many other examples of this superb little SW radio, the battery compartment hinged door failed, due to excessive pressure from the spring at the other end of the compartment. This can be repaired by partially dismantling the radio from the casing and cutting the spring using wire cutters. One evening, I decided to have a go. Storm Isha tried very hard to take me off the air! Oxford Shortwave Log 2024-01-23 | Hi there, I know I keep banging on about upgrading my antenna supports to something more robust than fibreglass telescopic poles. I just don't have the time to even think about it! Anyway, Storm Isha caused a bit of damage and part of my wire collapsed. However, the SWR on 40 and top band was still around 2:1 so with the internal matching on the Yaesu FT-991A I was able to carry on with FT8 last night.

Airband scanning is something I tend to do more in the summer months - that way I can often catch the aircraft in the video. The collinear antenna is on the roof by the way, and designed for the 2m and 70 cm amateur bands. It's more than ok for airband RX through.
