2nd Annual Waterfly Borneo MEGA SUP FUN Race - Tanjung Aru Beach Festival 2024 Waterfly Borneo 2024-09-22 | What a day!!!!Saturday the 21st of September 2024, saw the 2nd annual Waterfly Borneo MEGA SUP Fun Race take place as a part of the 2024 Tanjung Aru Beach Festival. The swell was much larger than our teams are usually used to for our calm Tanjung Aru Beach, but that didn't stop the teams turning out, eager to get their hands on a part of the RM2,500 cash prize pool. A few teams from last year returned again this year, better prepared to tackle the MEGA SUP challenge. These teams included Gin and Tonic, Borneo Paddle Monkeys, and SSP Loves Mitch. We also had 2 new teams join us this year with Surf n Roll, and Karapaw Dragon Boat Racing Team wanting to make their mark. Karapaw stated early dominance with a nice win over Gin and Tonic resulting in Gin and Tonics elimination. Next race saw Paddle Monkeys take the win from SSP Loves Mitch, followed by Surf n Roll. This resulted in a hotly contested final series of the highly experienced Borneo Paddle Monkey crew, the raw power of Karapaw Dragon Boats Racing Team, and the energetic surfers from Karambrunei, SSP Loves Mitch. The start was clean followed by an early tussle between SSP Loves Mitch and Borneo Paddle Monkeys as they bounced off eachother and launched over the waves. At the first mark they chose opposite directions for mark roundings resulting in an exciting cross at the first and second mark. Borneo Paddle Monkeys led into the last mark with SSP Loves Mitch hot on their heels. Halfway through the final leg the young surfing team did what they do best and picked a wive from just outside to match pace with Borneo Paddle Monkeys. It all came to an outrageously exciting finish when both teams crossed the lines almost at the exact same time. But there was one factor which would go on to determine the winner. All 8 paddlers from each team must cross the line to be considered finished. With all the supporters screaming at the competitors to cross the line, the SSP Loves Mitch team got an incredibly narrow win over the all-mighty Borneo Paddle Monkeys who were unfortunately slowed by an injured paddler who could not run. WHAT A FINISH FOR THE AGES!!!! A huge congratulations to all competitors for tackling such tricky and exciting conditions.
