Tuning Process:
* The first thing I want you to do is pick a random reg pressure to start out with… don't care what it is, so long as it’s on the lower side of what you’ve heard is good & proper.
* Next, I want you to back way-off your hammer spring tension, begin shooting over a chrony, and slowly bring the HS tension up, until your shot-to-shot velocity just begins to stabilize… taking at least 10 shots to be sure.
* Now STOP, that newly found HS balance point marks an ideal place to be for the reg pressure you just chose. Take note, you’re close to a sweet spot.
* Continue to tighten your HS tension, in ultra small bits at a time now, until you observe your shot-to-shot velocity really tighten up… like within 1-3 fps of one-another. STOP, you’ve arrived.
* Don't increase the HS tension much past this balance point, or you’ll cross over into the right side of the tuning rainbow.
* Now if you need more or less speed, that’s okay, but go to the reg, not the HS. Try not to use the HS as a velocity control device… for the most part, that’s the regulator’s job! Remember, “the regulator is the master flow control.” The HS is just there to balance the valve out with your reg setting.
*f you need more velocity, increase the reg pressure and repeat the above steps to rebalance the HS tension to match. If you need less velocity, reduce the reg pressure and rebalance the hammer spring to match.
*Now that you’ve got the basics of how to go about locating balance points between regulator pressure and HS tension, begin testing varying velocities for accuracy… and test at a minimum of 50 yds (75 yards is better).
*Along the way, it’s important to rebalance your reg/HS selection for each new velocity tested, otherwise your accuracy results won’t be reliable. And always work the HS from low to high and slowly. Hammering up past the sweet spot is super easy to do.
*As you go, repeat the above steps, until you find a velocity at which the projectile becomes its most accurate… and doesn’t hook, wobble, or corkscrew in flight.
*Then go build yourself out a nice clean tune around that speed.

VIDEO OUTLINE:
Tuning = Accuracy - Velocity - Stability - Consistency - Efficiency - Harmonics - Power Output
What is Tuning?
"It's the process by which we adjust the gun into a state of harmony & accuracy for any ammo or weather conditions."
Why do we do it?
“We tune to control performance, so that we can achieve the best accuracy, stability, and efficiency no matter what.”
How do we go about it?
"With an organized approach, we search & test for system harmony (reg/hammer balance points) at an accurate velocity.”
Tuning = Adjust-Control-Search for Accuracy - Velocity - Stability - Consistency - Efficiency - Harmonics - Power Output
Parts you need to know;
Regulator - the regulator takes a varying air pressure and turns it into a steady one (hi to lo)
Valve - the valve takes the air pressure coming out of the regulator and turns it into a metered pulse.
Hammer - the hammer collides with the valve, briefly opening it.
Tuning Process;
1) pick a lower than what you've heard reg pressure to begin
2) back off the hammer spring, and slowly bring up the hammer tension until velocity stabilizes
(always better to work at the balance point & below… over causes hammer bounce & waste air)
3) stop, that balance point is the ideal velocity for that reg setting (not necessarily perfected yet)
4) test the velocity for accuracy & stability at a minimum of 50 yds
5) leverage the QTS system and small reg2 adjustments to hunt around for the best accuracy
6) search for further improvement by beginning to work the VA closed in very small increments
7) evaluate and repeat, while searching for the speed at which the projectile stabilizes and becomes accurate.
8) build a tune around the velocity which found you accuracy
** you're essentially choosing velocity with the regulator setting... the hammer spring adjustments and VA bring the rest of the system into harmony with your chosen reg setting.
** exhaust your refinement of the tune, THEN experiment with the VA to further enhance accuracy
Golden Rules of Tuning;
1) know the needs of your projectile (diabolo vs redesign vs slugs)
2) stability trumps accuracy (pellets can hook & wobble into one hole at 50 yards, then scatter by the time they get to 100).
3) speed trumps tune (a velocity that gets ya accuracy is more important than a tight ES & SD... the pros dial on the fly all the time… find the right speed then build a tune around it).
4) tune the reg with headroom for temperature swings (reg up a little high to take full advantage of the M3's QTS system on cold mornings & hot afternoons… it’s okay to sacrifice a few shots)
5) ammo matters… a lot (find the one the barrel likes and sort for reliable accuracy).
Key Things to Remember When Tuning;
1) let the reg be your velocity throttle, the hammer spring setting just brings the rest of the system into harmony with the reg
2) all you’re doing with tuning is balancing forces to a chosen velocity and trimming waste air
3) if you’re close on the tune and struggling, a tad more reg pressure can have a stabilizing effect on velocity… as can a tad more hammer tension
4) obsess over ES & SD not because of consistency but because the tightness indicates an efficient valve closing with minimum waste air behind the projectile
5) work slowly from low to high on the regs & hammer, it’s easy to evershoot the ideal
6) harmonics matter to accuracy… experiment with scope position, bipod position, different moderators, harmonic tuners, sleeves, barrel tensioners, etc..

Element Optics HYPR-7 (7x50) Riflescope Manufacturer's Description:
The HYPR-7 (Hybrid Precision Riflescope 7x50) is like nothing you have ever seen before: An Optical Riflescope with HD Glass, adjustable parallax and other features familiar to traditional riflescopes, but with a ballistic calculator chip and digital display that open up a whole new world of possibilities. Integrated sensors read atmospheric conditions, a gyroscope detects incline and can't, and a rangefinder signal is received by Bluetooth. A firing solution is then calculated for you and your predicted point of impact is displayed within the scope. 4 profiles can be loaded at a time, and reticles and units can be customized for each profile.
Element Optics Theos 6-36x56 FFP Riflescope Manufacturer's Description:
THEOS has entered the room – Created through a three-year process of meticulous planning, careful crafting and brutal testing. With a completely re-engineered turret system, digital illumination control and a magnification range of 6-36x, we’ve raised the bar governing what a flagship should be and placed the Theos firmly on the throne. New features on this model include a revolution flag that provides a visual indication when you pass a full turn, a new zero-stop mechanism that requires no tools, a digital illumination that clears up space around the parallax knob, and an aperture ring that manipulates the depth of field when needed.

* Ultimate Setup & User's Guide to the Barra 400E .177 Electric BB Air Rifle (video review).
The NEW Barra 400E fully automatic/semiautomatic select-fire BB Gun by Moab Ventures is HANDS DOWN the World's very best BB Gun. The Barra 400E's aluminum & steel composition, 600 rounds/minute BB-gun rate of fire, 50 round magazines, 1,000 shot/lipo rechargeable battery, select fire (semiautomatic/fully automatic), adjustable buttstock, licensed M-Lok rails, weaver rail, QD sling mounts, flip up (dual use) fiber optic sights, moderator, ambidextrous controls, and simple disassembly & cleaning make it absolutely AMAZING!!! The Barra 400E's bb gun accuracy, quality, construction, shot-to-shot consistency, and realism are unmatched in the airgun industry.
In this video review of the NEW Barra 400E fully automatic BB Gun, I share 30' and 45' accuracy testing, the best BB's to use for optimum accuracy out of the Barra 400E BB-gun, rate of fire, BB penetration testing, BB chronograph data, bb-gun trigger testing, bb gun barrel cleaning, lithium polymer (lipo) battery care, battery charging, storage, Barra 400E magazine BB-loading & unloading, optics, sights, and more!!!!

In detail, I reveal the ways of its reciprocating poly-coated steel ratcheting piston (borrowed from airsoft tech) its break-barrel airgun-like metal compression chamber, electronic trigger, and magnetic BB hopper. Simple Barra 400E breakdown & barrel cleaning are also shared in this video review.

During the interview, Jon speaks at length on the great efforts made by FX Airguns in the area of modern airgun/air rifle slug development. He shares that the recent endgame has been to get .22 caliber airguns shooting air rifle slugs at the same performance level & BC as the .22 long rifle/rimfire NRL/PRS match rifles do with their bullets... and goes on to say that this has now been successfully achieved!! The recent development in airgun equipment (FX Impact M3 PCP airgun with the 800mm barrel, Barrel Tensioner, and Power Block) has also played an important role in getting modern air rifles to perform the same as high performance .22 rimfire sporting rifles. Similar airgun results have also been achieved in .25 and .30 caliber.
Jon goes on to discuss a new FX Airguns U.S.A. entity (FX Outdoors Group) which has been developed to ease & increase the importation & distribution capabilities of airgun related product into North America... among their partners thus far are Element Optics, FX Hybrid Slugs, Javelin Slugs, GRS Rifle Stocks, FX Pocket Chrony, and more.
Pro Air (Professional Airgun Federation) started by world-famous Cheff, Guy Fieri is also discussed. This orchestrating body will work to organize local airgun competitive shooting matches according to a standardization of events, scoring, layout, airguns, and prizes... then funnel the victors of these local shooting competitions on to larger regional events... and ultimately to an airgun/air rifle shooting match championship such as the Rocky Mountain Airgun Challenge (RMAC).

During the interview, Zan talks about his career path in Slovenia, and how he came to be the inventor and manufacture of Zan airgun slugs. The Zan air rifle slugs are specifically designed for long range airgun use at distances out to 100 yards and more. Zan's airgun slugs are very accurate and hard-hitting, making them an excellent choice for airgun hunting too!
The proprietary mix of air rifle lead in Zan airgun slugs is the revealed secret to air rifle accuracy across many premium airgun brands... to include FX Airguns, Daystate, Brocock, Edgun, Hatsan, Air Arms, AirForce, RAW, Airgun Technology (AGT), AirMaks Arms, Weihrauch, Diana, Air Venturi, Umarex, Ataman, LCS Air Arms, AEA Airguns, Crosman, Benjamin, Taipan, American Air Arms, and more. Because of this inherent air rifle accuracy & performance, many top competitors competing in airgun shooting matches choose Zan slugs.

During the interview, Athlon Optics takes us all through their new Midas Carbon Fiber Hunting Tripod, the Althlon Optics Midas Tac HD airgun scope, the Althlon Neos scope for air rifles & airguns, and the Althlon Optics Cronus BTR Gen2 UHD rifle scope that's also well suited to the needs of airguns, air rifles, and airgunners.
Dustin from Athlon Optics covers a lot of airgun bipods & airgun rifle scopes in this video, but the company is also well known for their binoculars, red dots, spotting scopes, and range finders. Other popular scopes produced by Allon Optics include the Ares UTR HD, Ares BTW Gen2 HD, Midas BTR Gen2 HD, Midas HMR HD, Helos BTR, Helos BTR Gen2 HD, Argos BTR Gen2, Argos HMR, Talos, Talos BTR, and Neos.
Dustin also touches on the Athlon Shooting Sports Giveback Program, a STRONG incentive to airgunners around the country to participate in their local airgun shooting competitions & matches!! This program not only incentivizes those who compete in shooting matches with airguns and air rifles, but with sporting rifles too. The craziest part is that one doesn't even to compete with an Athlon Optics scope to participate in the program, but if you do, you'll be extra-rewarded!

During the interview, Serena & Duke take us all through Pro Air, explaining how at its core, the Professional Airgun Association is an organizing body for the airgun, air rifle, and air pistol industry, intended to bring cohesion and integrity to the airgun sport and its competitive shooting matches. Pro Air will help to standardize and spread international & local airgun shooting competitions around the world, meaning that we will see an increase of smaller local shooting events near you, as well as an increase in larger competitive airgun shooting matches across the country!
These competitive airgun shooting matches will be more organized, and use standardized targets, procedures, scoring, and organizational theme. What's more, Pro Air will bring a funneling "playoff" type of structure to the local matches, forwarding the most skilled competitors from there on to the larger regionalized matches ... and so on.
Find out more about the Pro Air, Professional Airgun Federation here: proairfederation.org
We conclude our chat by talking all about the 2022 Rocky Mountain Airgun Challenge international airgun shooting competition... and while Serena and Duke are sharing their thoughts on RMAC 2022, I'm sharing plenty of event pictures with the audience!

The modern airgun (air rifle) is evolving at a rapid pace and this EPIC evolution is celebrated in the grandest style at the Rocky Mountain Airgun Challenge international airgun shooting competition!
At the Rocky Mountain Airgun Challenge (RMAC), hundreds of competition shooters from around the world come together for a grueling week of fierce battle, slugging it out for WELL over $100,000 in cash, and high-dollar prizes. However, despite the high level of competitiveness, the culture & energy at RMAC is one of kind-spiritedness & professionalism. This is an event where Pro-Shooters and RMAC staffers alike, welcome newer shooters... assisting them in safety, learning, and fun every step of the way.
The week consists of practice + several qualifying & elimination rounds for "Sportsman" shooters (the newer folks) and "Pro Class" shooters (the highly practiced & factory-backed folk and industry people). The main events consist of the 100 Yard Benchrest Pro Class, the 100 Yard Benchrest Sportsman, the Precision Marksman Challenge - Pro Class (similar to NRL/PRS), the Precision Marksman Challenge - Sportsman (also similar to NRL/PRS), the Speed Challenge - Pro Class, the Speed Challenge - Sportsman, and Big Bore.
Across these events, participants are accurately shooting modern airguns and air rifles out to distances of up to 300 yards (yes, you read that correctly) with plenty of 25 - 100 yard airgun pellet & airgun slug shooting in between. In essence, the 100 yard benchrest is a "pellet only" event and the Precision Marksman Challenge obstacle course events are airgun pellet or slug approved... shooter's choice. In the Big Bore Airgun Competitions, heavy air rifle slugs are what are most commonly used.
Airgun calibers observed most often at the Rocky Mountain Airgun Challenge are .22 cal, .25 cal, and .30 cal. The Big Bore Events see airgun calibers in the .357 to .72 range, and everything in between. The airgun power levels observed are most commonly in the 50 - 500 fpe range (yes, also not a typo).

In this video, we discuss how to get started airgun tuning, airgun tuning basics, and favorable approaches to tuning your air rifle for the best results. The airgun tuning lessons learned in this video can be applied to ANY air rifle, from the value-priced Air Venturi Avenger Regulated PCP airgun, to the Pro-level FX Airguns Impact, and various Pro-level Daystate & Brocock air rifles too. From mild to wild, and every other airgun in between... these valuable airgun tuning teachings will apply.
If you'd like to learn how to tune an airgun regulator, this video will also thoroughly cover airgun regulator tuning and the best way to go about it. We talk about how to tune the Huma regulator commonly used in Daystate & Brocock air rifles, how to tune the FX Airguns AMP regulator, and how to tune the regulator used in the Air Venturi Avenger Regulated PCP airgun. We also discuss how to go about tuning an air rifle regulator safely, and the general lessons we share can be applied to most any airgun regulator.
Every wonder how to tune your airgun hammer spring for control over efficiency, power, and pellet velocity? Or how to tune your airgun hammer spring to work with your air rifle's regulator setting? This video will cover the best way to go about that as well.
Bottom line, if you wish to get started tuning your airgun hammer spring and regulator together, or if you wish to learn how to tune your airgun for the first time, then watch this video from beginning to end. Afterwords, you will have a solid understanding of how to go about tuning your airgun with great success!
Enjoy!!!

The air rifle used in this video for Iguana pest elimination is a Pre-Charged Pneumatic (PCP) airgun designed for hunting, plinking, and target practice. Its air gun design incorporates an externally adjustable regulator & repeating hammerless valve system with a Lothar Walther Polygonal Barrel. This rare combination makes the gun very accurate, convenient, and fun to operate.
The SK-19 is tunable and running it at about 60 fpe, it gets approximately 60 shots per fill out of its removable 480 cc carbon fiber bottle. This bottle is refillable to 250 bar. Max usable power is likely in the area of 65-70 fpe in .25 cal... push it much harder than that and accuracy may be compromised via pellet instability. Shooting a JSB 33.95gr airgun pellet, ideal speed is probably in the 875 to 915 fps range.
This pellet gun also takes advantage of rigid picatinny rails so that one can mount a scope and bipod, a shrouded barrel to help reduce noise, a light weight dual stage trigger with dual safeties, a rubber buttstock, an auto-indexing titanium magazine, and dual manometers... one for reading remaining air pressure, and the other for reading the current regulator setting.

In .25 caliber, the Sk-19 airgun runs well tuned to 55 - 65 fpe with the JSB 34gr variant air rifle pellets, and it is very capable of sub half inch groups at 50 yards, especially when "moderator tuned" for harmonics & frequency. Perhaps detuned a bit from the factory recommendation of "900 fps w/34gr pellets," it can be made to perform well out to 100 yards as well (speculating 875 fps or 915 fps with the 34gr JSB's) ... for me, the factory recommended 900 fps was inducing a bit of pellet instability.
Its Lothar Walther Polygonal barrel, externally adjustable regulator, externally adjustable power adjuster, 480cc carbon fiber bottle, dual pressure gauges, and 19 round TITANIUM magazine all contribute to the fun. A 3-year warranty and "assembled in North Carolina, America" value proposition bring peace of mind.
This will be the FIRST video of a 3-video series on the SK-19 Air Rifle. A full Review + Elaborate Iguana Hunt, and an SK-19 Barrel Removal/Cleaning/Indexing Guide video are forthcoming.
