Just this year we've looked at the VRD Stance RTR and VRD Carbon kit, two legendary rock crawlers that are just stellar on the hard stuff.But the VP H10 Optic Trail Buggy is something of a different beast. For a start, it's in the name - it doesn't claim to be a rock crawler. Reengineering the Redcat Ascent Fusion! RC-TNT 2024-05-13 | We recently looked at the new Redcat Racing Ascent Fusion RTR RC crawler (youtu.be/jPx5HSszdtI). While quite capable, I felt it was about at its performance limit when compared to other vehicles in its class.I found the front end of the chassis quite busy. The rear end doesn't meet WRCCA comp ruleset standards, the tires have a LOT of sideways play, and the geometry up front just isn't quite right - there's even a little bump steer!One issue with all this modifying this vehicle is challenging: you already have a good, strong servo, an FOC brushless system, carbon-fiber chassis rails, and a nice, lightweight body. So what do you do to address its shortcomings?Well, I've spent a week on this and wanted to bring you a path to addressing the issues with as little pain and extra hardware as possible. RC-TNT 2024-04-25 | Pricey's Tuff Truck is a class created by the man himself, Steve Price of Pricey's Custom Crawlers (see facebook.com/p/Priceys-Custom-Crawlers-100057753455776 )The Capra and Gatekeeper are the out-of-the-box rigs that fit right in to this class. But there's so much room to imagine and create, it's great! I've been busy with Mini and Scale-1 of late, so this year I've kinda mashed together my Capra and an Injora Rock Buggy chassis/body, which is cheap, light and easy to work with.How'd it turn out? So glad you asked! Let me show you!--Important update: this is a Gmade R1 clone. I somehow missed this when making the video. Sorry for the oversight and apologies to gmade for featuring your design without attribution. I'll try hard not to let this happen again. --Update: I created this video in the last few days before I left for ECCF. It's still a couple of days before I leave as I write this and I've been testing several different tire and foam combos - just didn't have time to do this until now! In the video here, you can see how similar the two sets of tires perform. I actually do prefer my TPU inserts over the foams and the new treads are even better now I've run a few packs through them. I'm going to compete using my 1.9 Mr Lines V2 for 5.4 Pro-Lines, I've decided. I'm about as happy as I'll get with the rig in its current form. It still isn't quite right, but it's pretty good. I've used generic TPU, so can't tell you it's shore rating, but softer is generally going to be better.
