It was dutch book week this week, so I made a few trips to my local bookstores. There is a few books I bought earlier this year and late last year, but most of it is from this week.
I don't think I did justice to Joelle Taylor in this video, she talked about so much more and especially around poetry as protest. I'd highly recommend seeing her perform if you are able
There's no record of the event I was at, but plenty of video available on youtube, here's one of the poems she performed.

Mary Shelley
the cycle of life ~ transitions ~ attachment
Frankenstein isn't the garish zombie story we've seen in pop culture. Inspired by scientific discussions of the day and the complex feelings Mary Shelley (1797-1851) had about parenting, Frankenstein is a painful tale about the creation of life and what happens to shunned, abandoned children. Her life was as harrowing as her famous novel, her great losses of mother (feminist Mary Wollstonecraft), husband (Percy Bysshe Shelley), and three children tried her ideals of domestic harmony.

Joy Harjo
plunging in ~ making decisions ~ fear
Harjo, a common Mvskoke (Creek) name, means "so brave, she's crazy." Joy Harjo (b. 1951) courageously surived an oppresive childhood, teenage pregnancy and domestic abuse before becoming a spiritually charged poet of wild natural imagery and urgent social activism, as well as an award-winning saxophone player and singer.

Anne Carson - Intellectual growth/delights of the mind/plagues of the mind.
Anne Carson (b. 1950) - a prolific writer of poems, essays, and various literary hybrids - works with themes of lost family members, love and lust, religion and the intellectual tradition. The combination of this MacArthur Fellowship recipient's austerity, startling insights and relentless questioning is as awe-inspiring and explosive as the volcanoes she has been known to paint. Carson is also a scholor of Ancient Greek and Latin texts and a champion of fellow Witches, having translated Sappho and written about Emily Brontë and Virginia Woolf.
