It eventually took me to the The Mortimer Trail in the vicinity of the Mortimer Forest and Ludlow, which borders Shropshire & Herefordshire. It was late August 2013 and the weather had treated me well despite the fact that rain was on the horizon. I would not have minded the water but I enjoyed the sunset better on the first evenings camp beside Brush Wood near Richards Castle to the West a mile or so of the village. And what a sunset it was, which I managed to capture well hanging over Radnorshire and Powys. The next morning I was off beyond Downton Castle to a round table gathering (no not that round table) but one our good friend Nigel Sturgeon, myself and others had created over the years out of Herefordshire Oak. After a great Bivvy near Eardisley we head across country (England's green fields) and hike towards Leominster and the the River Arrows confluence with the Lugg. We discover an ancient timber House in Eardisley, which is empty apart from stuff stored inside and we bump into some Stockman tending to their herd. We chat for a while about the river and I discover that paul is in no mood to pretend for the camera so he larks about with a toy gun doing ops across a bridge. I leave it in and it proves to be humorous to me at least.At the confluence we are confused for the Arrow appears to disappear. We do find it and it forms an almost perfect y shape as it feeds into the River Lugg and then onto the River Wye and Severn. Prior to locating it though we are greeted once again by a Kingfisher right there at the confluence. It was a guide for sure.A little puckered out we head for Leominster and home and reflect upon a fantastic hike down another medium sized river full of surprises and great countryside, history, farming operations, nature and views. We heard a lamb bleating away and it didn't sound good. At first there was no sign of it but then we noticed a lamb on the other side of a large hedge with its neck stuck in a wire fence made up of small squares. It had evidently tried to graze on the other side and could not reverse once it had successfully negotiated the boundary.The snare was tight and you'll notice or have already noticed at the beginning of the Arrow Adventure a sheep actually died replicating the same grazing maneuver through a fence. The lamb had probably been their all night and could well have remained to greet its doom. It's the rarely visited high hills of Radnorshire and they're wild and gnarly. Indeed, evidence of its unforgiving nature was found in a dead sheep the fleece of which was draped out of one side of a wire fence. It had tried to graze the grass on the other side and met its death in doing so. The wild and unforgiving nature here is in the fact that it was not discovered and so therefore saved, which was a little different for a lamb that we found in exactly the same predicament later. It was saved albeit for the slaughter house.No bother though these were still beautiful hills. A nice surprise was the ravine that the Arrow was running out of on Gwuanceste Hill. It was deep, full of flora and fauna, mosses and heather. The water cutting its trail through the high hill was a sonic delight as Red Kites flew overhead adding to the remote atmosphere. This is similar terrain to the River Lugg source as it is in the Radnorshire Forest one of our favourite places on the Welsh and English border. Hereford is to the East about 3o miles as the crow flies and it feels good to be distant from the city once more. It's a good reason to find a river and walk it.As we walk we come across evidence of hill farming and a barbed wire fence, which we have to nip over. Erica, having only partial use of one arm, finds these things a little more tricky because you literally swing when negotiating such boundaries. You need both arms. True to the handicap she gets caught in the barb and we mean snagged a treat. We eventually have to cut her free from the barb and, without one complaint, we go on our way. She is a trooper.With a wood and an oak tree as land marks Erica keeps an eye on her route back for she is off to the Pyrenees and only walking to the source with paul and I. As we near the source we stop for a brew on the side of a conifer plantation and then head down the valley checking the map as go. There are plenty of features and the land is easy to read. After exploring the abandoned farm we meet with Mr Probert a welsh hill farmer. He was a lovely chap but we both commented on the similarity between American werewolf in London and the manner in which he was watching us from the hill whilst mooching around the farm. It looked dodgy. However, the reality was different.Later after mooching around the silent lanes of the hills we found a camp site to Bivvy in. Itv was a good site with a subtle depression, which created a little Ha ha type effect. Our basha was obscured from view and we felt relaxed. There we thought about the day and chatted about a life outdoors whilst thinking about our father Terry (Jickells) who served in the SAS (A Squadron) for over twenty years. At the bottom we meet with becky at an old farm who i speak to about Renewable energy specifically hydro, which her father is generating via the River Arrow right at source. It was brilliant to see as were the photovoltaics on the roof of the dwelling. With barking dogs in our midst we say Hi to Becky's father and move on. Shortly after we say a big thank you to Erica and bid her goodbye also. She is off to the Pyrenees to get a bit of mountain bliss in there. Down the lane we come across an old abandoned farm, which is almost frozen in time with the outbuildings as they were some 30 or so years before it was abandoned. It was amazing to mooch around for it wasn't a modern farm then. There lay old carts, hand held tools and even the hay was left in the loft. The house was not much different with thick curtains from the 30's or twenties and shoes, which were definitely of this period. Fascinating! The song in the morning was as crisp as frost in the air. It was pure delight as it is when out and about. Here we show the village of eardisley with its Black and White timber framed housing one of which was abandones. Check it out in this video. Evidently the village has grown up around the Arrow and benefits from it flowing through. It sets the tone. A romantic zone for sure.It was brief but most certainly pleasant. It's not how life is for most but we don't begrudge the enjoyment of such an environment for those fortunate enough. We can sense Hereford in the distance and the rivers confluence with the Lugg, which begins life in Radnorshire some distance to the West (see River Lugg Micro Adventure). In our view although the river is seemingly insignificant it sustains a lot of farming operations, livestock and people. Settlements along its length have appeared (Bromyard maybe) over the centuries and its slopes and valley bottom has appealed to those seeking to grow a range of crops. It catches the sun and has water to irrigate. There are weirs redirecting flow and so it is managed and has been abused over time. And as for time this river feels somewhat ancient. It sounds daft saying this for all rivers are old but the valley seems to be a hidden one as depicted in the name of the celebrated festival Nozstock. It's tucked away surrounded by hills and thick woodland and so in this sense it's the silence amid the river that lends it a vibration of the old world. Is it a romantic view? Not at all it is still and yet intensively farmed on the flats. However, from what we can see the river still has power and though we do not know the real health of it (will investigate) we can only but surmise that other creatures besides that of established livestock make use of it also. Watch it close enough and we would no doubt discover what's there besides the silence, an unassuming confluence that spoke of absolutely no arrival, the Curlew calling overhead, two brothers walking it and a visually pleasing valley that is the Frome.'Micro Adventure' terminology inspired by Alastair Humphreys. It has been abandoned probably because of the cattle. Partridge are apparently having a hard time due to habitat erosion so it's nice to see them. Collecting abandoned eggs we take two and blow them later at home.Up yonder a short hop we see an old train station with rolling stock and all the fixtures and fittings befitting a tourist attraction. Thinking it is a tourist attraction we walk onto the platform and are amazed it is tucked away in Herefordshire. We are soon greeted by a man and his wife who are, it must be said, friendly. However, we soon learn it's their home and after a brief chat a few photos we follow the directions that have been pointed out.Further on down the valley we come across another horse, which is truly majestic. As with all horses it's a bit skittish and we let it know we respect it by way of walking by gently with a wide girth. Not out of fear but out of a desire to simply not spook an animal. It works and we near Bromyard passing the old Leominster to Worcester line and a surprising conservation area, which is made up of bog and pool alike. The animals like for we see a fox in broad daylight and moorhen to name one bird species. Back in Bromyard we look for a bivvy site and find a a shooting range and a rundown cricket pavilion. The pavilion becomes the preferred site for the night. Out of the wind it is ideal. That ideal in fact we treat ourselves to curry and chips the portion of which could have fed a few. Hungry I eat 2/3 and with a satisfying feeling in terms of having explored and eaten we make a brew and slowly drift off into our doss bags and prep for the next day.'Micro Adventure' terminology inspired by Alastair Humphreys. The objective for my brother Paul and I was to hike out of the town 5-6 miles North West to locate the derivation of the Frome River. We had no idea what the source looked like but from what we had read it appeared out of the side of a hill via a rather unappealing pipe. The hike out was good and as we passed the site of the Nozstock Festival we sat for a while and admired the Malvern Hills some 14 miles to the South.As we approached the source we were struck by the apparent remoteness of the scene in an English countryside kind of way. It was a beautiful long valley peppered with old farms that had probably been there for hundreds of years. Only small lanes reached this far and while the sheep bleated we were reminded of our solitary adventure for two days or so.Climbing over a gate towards what we felt to be the source we anticipated once more a new surprise. each river source is different and this one is going to be no different. Wow! What a source. It is a source of a river but it is for sure ugly. With a grey pipe delivering a drip, rubbish strewn below it, sheep shit, mud and the pig of all pigs beside it the Froome is without doubt absent of any real status. Nobody comes here to think of a river that irrigates many farms down stream and essentially feeds a nation. It is taken for granted and as such it's waters are unappreciated.Admiring its strange ugly beauty we move on after conversing with the pig of pigs. A few good obstacles, a grouchy farmer, an old rail station, which happened to be a home and a beautiful horse and conservation area later we arrived back in Bromyard for a nights bivvy. Roughly 10-12 miles had been covered and we decided that curry and chips was the order of the day so tucked in before sundown in a rundown cricket pavilion and prepared for a chilly yet satisfying night on the floor.'Micro Adventure' terminology inspired by Alastair Humphreys. We have passed a dead Lamb evidence of predation in the British countryside, which is always good to see as it demonstrates that natural processes are still being played out. The river is small and resembles a brook. The tricky part about navigating any river is the patch work of arable and pastoral land and the Froome is no exception. Although some of it is open to hikers, trekkers and those who like to 'ramble on' it is, in the main, closed ground. Put simply to navigate a river you have to step of the established trail because it does not recognise way markers. And so inevitably we bump into land owners. Often we approach it like an operation keeping low to gullies and reducing our silhouette if possible but they are around and we come into contact. They're not going to shoot you today so all you are likely to get is a demand, a lecture, a frown or a moan about land and rights and with that, and as in our case here, we do not argue and move on. We are quickly back on track though greeting a farmyard horse who would not let us go. We must have been friendly folks and a vibe for it to be in such need. Returning to roaming the land is there an ethical issue here? Although we do see land ownership I don't think so. The question is. How did land ownership first arise? To answer that is another mission. Meanwhile so long as we are respectful a problem does not emerge within our ethical radar for we are usually quick off and on the trail leaving no trace as we go. Not being ones for show we had never been just to say we had. The answer to our good friend Madan who had celebrated there on numerous occasions was simple. Yeah we were up for it because it felt right. It was wet and windy on Salsbury Plain where Stonehenge has resided for 5,000 years but this didn't stop in the region of 4,000 people from gathering on Saturday 21 2013. Being into the essence of dance, gathering and celebration I was looking forward to this. People of many cultures around the planet had always gathered in a circle or medicine wheel and this morning was no different. On site I felt at home and it reminded me of the dance party scene of the early late 80's and early 90's where we would dance for the very same reason and that was for life. Indeed, I danced like I would at any dance gathering and was refreshed and enlivened by the drum circle. Here in the circle Druids, Pagans, Wiccans and more lead the ceremony amid ordinary folk many of which had a stereotype broken down as a result of English Heritage promoting the event to the mainstream. No matter though for there was still a core element that had retained its connection to the site keeping old traditions alive.Personally I met many good people and the Winter Solstice 2013 at Stonehenge was, in my eyes, a success. Afterwards we left Stonehenge and Salsbury Plain for Avebury Stone Circle where we were invited to join another circle to hale the dawn of a new crown at Avebury. Rare and good timing it was a real pleasure to offer our own support and blessings. We were out for nearly two days in the end and arrived home a little tired but all the better for our journey to the henge, which included Erica, Nick, Neil, Paul and of course myself Mark and Madan otherwise known as Mike. Thanks to them for great company and far out conversation as is often the case when we get together in this manner or in any other come to think of it.Have a great year!
