This is my solo done alone in the studio so I could be maskless during this pandemic!🗣 What differences do you see from 2017 vs 2022?For me, I feel much more settled now in 2022, but much less strong physically. This routine is INCREDIBLY hard on the stamina if you haven't been dancing consistently (which I have not!).There are pros and cons to aging as a dancer, but one thing I really push in The Galen Hooks Method intensives is to treat your body as your material. It is your clay, your paint, and it is so unique that a dancer's material changes as they age (unlike clay or paint).And so, I'm totally fine with what my material can do at this point in my life! It is the most advanced intensive in THE GALEN HOOKS METHOD 2-Day intensive offerings. Dancers must submit to be accepted into the program.This video is a mock rehearsal for Olivia Rodrigo.The full piece was choreographed on the fly, completely unprepared, with changes made dozens of times to intentionally throw off the students the way they would be on a real job.These constant obstacles are used as a teaching tool in order for the dancers to develop and apply skills specific to industry dancing. We rehearsed for 4 hours total over two days, and this was only one portion of the intense layout of the GHM PRO 2-Day training.The GHM Pro session teaches everything from ‘How to work with an artist’ to ‘How to work with the camera’, the really specific nuanced things you don’t learn until you are on the job (and sometimes, you don’t even learn it there).This intensive gives dancers the tools and experience they need in order to avoid making those mistakes on an actual job.This was the first GHM PRO session in a year and a half, due to the pandemic, and the students did an incredible job!On a purely choreographic note, completely separate from the dancers' abilities, the choreography you see here was set for training purposes only. MOCK AWARDS SHOW PERFORMANCES: THE GHMAs Galen Hooks 2020-08-29 | The GHMAs are a mock version of the VMAs put on by alumni of THE GALEN HOOKS METHOD!This brand new project was conceived in the spirit of mentoring aspiring Creative Directors and providing a fulfilling project for alumni to take part in while the industry gets back on its feet.GHM Alumni chose from a list of songs that are nominated for the 2020 VMA’s and submitted creative treatments for those performances as if they are Creative Directors.8 finalists pitched their treatments via IG Live and the public voted on the top 3 they wanted to see be brought to life! This is the first time I documented the with a timer in the background so you could see!⏱️ 10min 40 secs.1 of the suggestions for routines was @shaylatukolan "Vex Oh".I looooooove Shay- we worked on a couple of seasons of a TV show together in Amsterdam & I just love him (& @kenzoalvares!).So I immediately chose this!I hadn't seen the routine before, so the 10 minutes started from scratch.And I'm mentioning how long it took to learn the routine because when people ask❓"How do I improve my choreo pickup?" or❓"What do you suggest if I don't have classes available in my area?" or❓"How else can I get cleaner?"one tip I give is "LEARN OFF OF A YOUTUBE VIDEO & GIVE YOURSELF A TIMER." This event rewards creativity, whether you’ve been dancing for 10 years or 10 months, by judging not based on dance skill but rather based on interpretation of a prompt.The dancer spins a wheel and is given a song at random, then spins a second wheel for a prompt at random. The dancer has to interpret the prompt to the song, dancing unrehearsed.“Freestyle Roulette” is an exercise used in the @thegalenhooksmethod intensives to train dancers in committing to artistic choices. The judges are reciprocally exposed to talent they would rarely have the opportunity to see.And lastly, this event allows us to discover new music and artists, often with the entire audience and the dancer hearing the song for the first time.In order to make room for all dance styles, 3 categories were offered: THE FEELS (slow, moody songs), THE HEELS (sensual songs danced in a heel), and THE THRILLS (upbeat, hype songs).Any dancer could enter any category and do any dance style they wanted to within that category.Participants flew from around the world to attend.
