The work explores the idea of renewal following personal crisis, revealing itself over movements titled ‘Unfolding’, ‘Abyss’ and ‘Child’. In the final movement a phrase from the chorus of ‘For unto us a child is born’ from Handel’s Messiah (a work sung frequently by Anthony’s mother, the soprano Anita Ritchie (nee Proctor)) is woven into the fabric of the music.‘Horn Trio: Re-birth’ was commissioned by violinist Donald Armstrong, who is joined in this performance from Wellington’s St Andrew’s On The Terrace by Alex Hambleton (horn) and Jian Liu (piano).
