Tater-Tot TunesAbout this remix: I really like this song's style, and I thought it fit 8-bit Kirby's Adventure style quite well. Also, I realized after beating Star Allies that every single main Kirby game except for Kirby's Dream Land has introduced a new gameplay mechanic for the final level/boss, and I think it's cool to see that continue and evolve each game.
About me: I'm a time traveling tater-tot from the early 90's, but my time machine crashed. Since I can't seem to find a way to get back, I might as well pass the time making music the only way I know how!

WHY did I have to remix this song? This was probably the hardest track I could've chosen to arrange. It's an abnormal time signature that constantly changes, plus very complicated rhythms and melodies. But I stuck with it, because I really liked the original song, and I think this version turned out really interesting. The original theme is a neat combination of battle-style orchestral mixed with distorted elements, matching the visuals/situation in the game. I tried to keep this idea in my version, even though it's all FM synth instruments.
I also figured out how to import new samples into a PC98 environment, so I was able to add the wrestling match "DING!" sound. Until now, I've been borrowing samples I received from Firecracker, but I'm hoping to keep adding and replacing with my own samples for the next remixes.
If you enjoyed this wild remix, please let me know what other songs from Tears of the Kingdom I should consider adapting.

I thought the idea of bringing these themes into the music was absolutely hilarious, so I was excited to port this song over into PMD as well.
Like my previous Splatoon 3 FM track, this one was created specifically for Firecracker Music Collection Vol.45 for the PC88 which was sold at Comiket 104 last week. This one actually made it onto the CD version too, not just the PC88 software. If you happen to go to a future Comiket, stop by Firecracker’s booth and there may be reprints on sale!

I tried to make it as close as possible, and I'm happy with the result. In the future, I'm planning to take more creative freedom and try new ideas, but for this track, I thought it was a fun challenge to see just how close I could get it to the original.

This song, which plays in one of the late-game Splatoon 3 story mode stages, is probably one of the most underrated in the game. I really like the harmony in the melody and the way the overall track is essentially a genre mashup. Sounds like it could fit really well even in the main turf war mode... hopefully one day, they'll add it!
You might've noticed, this is a new music/visual style for me! Recently, I decided to try to learn MML (Music Macro Language), which is a simple and almost old-fashioned way of creating music data that requires you to type every individual note into a text document... plus all info about note length, tuning, panning, etc etc... I finally decided to learn because I wanted to submit music to a Japanese doujin label called Firecracker, so I pushed through and learned it extremely quickly. At the end of the project, I think I far surpassed my own expectations, and I found a new inspiration to create retro remixes.
EDIT: Correction to Nintendo Co., Ltd from the text displayed in the video.

Thanks!Unconscience (Wet Floor ver.) - Splatoon 3 Side OrderTater-Tot Tunes2024-08-12 | Heard in Splatoon 3's first Side Order boss stage, "Unconscience" is a song that I immediately liked. Even though it's a track that uses minimal instrumentation and only one soloist (Marina), I could tell that it's a track with the potential to be a full fledged Splatoon pop song. My goal with this arrangement was to bring that idea to life.
For the arrangement itself, I leaned more toward the instrumentation of Splatoon 2's fictitious "Wet Floor" band, with the slap bass, electric guitars, and acoustic drum kit. I wasn't trying to specifically make a Wet Floor cover, but when I finished, I realized how close the two styles sounded, so I leaned into this idea for the final stretch.
Finally, I decided against using vocals, due to the controversial nature of AI and my limited budget. I decided to use synths that, while not as extreme and dynamic as voices, still create this otherworldy sound that Splatoon is known for.

It's a video-gamey type piece, of course, and it might bring some familiar feelings from the Kirby and Mother games, which were certainly huge inspirations.

Thanks!Toad Town (Orch Dance Mix) - Paper MarioTater-Tot Tunes2024-06-08 | The music of "Toad Town" made a great impression on me as a player when I reached the area. It starts out as a very simple call & response piece between the pizzicato strings and woodwinds, but as you enter certain buildings and wander the area, the rest of the channels fill out with new instruments and reharmonizations. Of course, it wasn't the only N64 game to do this type of gameplay-integrated sound, but I think it had a unique way of sounding like a busy small town.
For my version, I originally started the piece as a faithful orchestral rendition, but after finding out that the same composer, Tsujiyoko, created the recent Picross e and Picross S soundtracks, I had a flash of inspiration to bring a more whimsical and cartoony aspect to the piece. As a result, I think there might be some off putting sounds and strange adaptions, but I hope it conveys a unique "Paper Mario"-esque sound.

Thanks!Final Destination (Omega Mix) - Super Smash Bros. N64Tater-Tot Tunes2024-01-03 | I've always enjoyed the original Final Destination theme a lot, and it stands out now because of how unique it sounds compared to the later Smash Bros. entries. It's not as dramatic and climactic of a piece as Brawl's version, but instead it gets you to focus on the crazy bass and irregular rhythms... I guess you could call it "Chaos House" genre. I'm convinced you couldn't perform this, it's just too wild.
For my re-arrangement I wanted to stay pretty faithful. I think you'll hear some Super Monkey Ball and Jet Set Radio influences in my mix.

Thanks!Glitterglaze Glacier (Cozy Mix) - Yooka-LayleeTater-Tot Tunes2023-12-27 | Here's another tune fit for winter! I've wanted to arrange this theme for a long time... I suppose a couple of years ago, I would've done an 8bit remix like the old days. But this time, I wanted to re-imagine the original "Glitterglaze Glacier" theme with a different vision... instead of creating a cold, large orchestral piece like the original, I wanted to do the exact opposite, and create a small, warm jazz/bossa piece. I hope you enjoy the cozy re-harmonization!

DS Cooking NaviTater-Tot Tunes2023-12-06 | Have you heard this song? Maybe if you played Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which had an arrangement of this theme that played in the PictoChat stage. It's actually from a DS tool that's part of the Touch! Generations line of Nintendo products, and as usual, it has a soundtrack that stands out from the original game.
I took the original calming theme and tried to put a more upbeat and urgent spin on it. There's some kitchen pots and pans sounds, a hurried drumbeat, and as an experiment, I set up a microphone and recorded some live accordion! I don't know if it surpasses the sampled accordion sounds I usually use, but I had a lot of fun trying to keep up with the fast tempo. What you hear in this version is the result of 2 hours of failed takes!
I hope you enjoyed this remix, and thanks for listening.

First, I want to mention the new visualizer! I'm using something new called ALMAMPlayer to convert the MIDI data into onscreen scrolling notes. While I enjoyed showing the FL Studio DAW footage before for these types of videos, the visual performance was pretty poor and there was a lot of lag and jittering. But now, it gets even better - I bumped the video up to 60FPS so it's ultra smooth and pleasing to look at. I hope the videos appear more professional as a result.
As for the music, I noticed that two of Kirby & the Amazing Mirror's songs have extremely similar styles. So I decided to completely overhaul the genre and connect them together. It may be a little hard to recognize the originals, but the essence is still there.

Wonder)Tater-Tot Tunes2023-11-23 | For the final week of Super Mario Bros. Wonder 8bit Remix Livestreams, I created this remix of the Oriental Lake theme.
As I discussed on stream, I made the decision to break one of my Super Mario Bros. style rules, and use arpeggios for the chords. I think it was the only way to achieve the type of sound that would do this song justice. I really like the mysterious feel it has, I don't think there has really been a theme like this in any other 2D Mario game.
This will likely be the final 8bit remix for a little while, as I transition into arrangements in various other styles, including jazz, funk, rock, orchestral... who knows? I'll bring the 8bit remixes back occasionally, probably, but for now I've got some new ideas I want to put some time into.

(from Zelda: Spirit Tracks)Tater-Tot Tunes2023-10-28 | Spirit Tracks may be one of the lesser celebrated Zelda games, but it comes with one of my favorite soundtracks in the entire series. For this arrangement, I tried to expand on the ideas of the original track, with some locomotive-inspired percussion and new rhythms. If you're a fan of the original song, you might notice I dramatically changed the feeling of the later section.
I was quite a bit inspired by arranger Yasushi Asada for this arrangement. If you've played Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz, you have probably heard the amazing soundtrack, arranged by Asada. While the music originally sounded simple on the Nintendo DS game, Asada completely reinvented each track in such an elaborate way that I think certainly tops the original versions. A once goofy, mindless tune in Monkey Ball DS could now be a blood pumping pop-rock track in the Wii version, with reharmonizations and totally new sections. In the second half of this song, it felt necessary to change the feeling to a more triumphant one - I hope the section surprises you in a positive way!

In a way, I expect this to be one of my last 8bit remixes. I've had a lot more creative drive to produce tracks like the previous few videos. So, expect more of that. I've got a few Halloween themed ones coming soon!

Did its music live up to your expectations? I think so far, the late game music is where the best tracks are. The main theme, though, is still pretty solid. I tried to expand on the theme with some simple reharmonizations and a dense mix of guitars, synth pads, and pianos. There's even an Elephant section!

To start off, I chose a song from a game I grew up with on the DS. It's a very simple song, originally, which gave me a lot of room to try new ideas spin it into a new genre. My goal was to arrange this song with a focus on rhythm, which the original completely lacked. I think it'll be a surprising listen.

I channeled a bit of that energy into this arrangement medley of my favorite tracks from Wave Race 64! Even though these tracks remain mostly faithful to the originals, I tried some new ideas and twists that hopefully bring a fresh take to the series.
Some of my influences for this arrangement were T-SQUARE (who also likely influenced this original 1996 soundtrack), there's probably a bit of Hirokazu Ando influence in there, and I tried to bring in some ideas from Totaka's work on Wii Sports and other games.

The middle of the summer season, and down here in Florida we've had record highs in terms of heat. Here's a little summer arrangement of a really underrated Kirby track, originally called "Theatre Selection" from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. But wait! That song itself is actually an extended version of another track, "Friends 2" from Kirby's Dream Land 3! A little confusing. If you're a fan of the series, you might hear some other elements mixed in!

After some searching, I found that it plays in the Mine-Cart Land: Quickshot Course! It's an optional sidequest. So chances are, some or most of you might NOT have heard it yet! I hope I brought out the whimsical spirit in my retro remix.

Now for my own comments on the track. I was tasked with arranging a piece by a classical composer, so I chose a "neo-classical" composer Nikolai Kapustin to study and arrange a piece from. "Motive Force" jumped out at me as a very energetic and intriguing piece - if you look it up, you can hear Kapustin himself perform the piece on piano!
Because it was originally a piano piece, it was a natural fit for 8bit, which has such a limited amount of voices. I tried to faithfully re-create the same progression and feel of the original, but with some slight rhythm and harmonization changes. For example, the section 30 seconds in has a more frantic feel in my version, whereas the original is a little more laid back and casual. If anyone is introduced to Kapustin's work because of this remix, I would be very glad.

I'm comfortable producing irregular covers these days, even though it's likely not good for channel growth and stability. I'm really just doing it for fun when I feel inspired and have the time & passion, so I can't promise any sort of regular schedule for now.
This track is one of my favorites from Skyward Sword. It's the standard mini-boss theme that you might hear during certain enemy encounters in dungeons. It's written in sort of a fugue style, where the main melody is passed between parts on irregular intervals. In my version, I tried to retain these complex rhythms using only two channels, which was pretty tough. I took a few creative liberties in reharmonizing certain sections, which you might notice if you compare it with the original. Overall, I don't think it's a song many people immediately think of from this game, but it's one of my secret favorites.

I guess this isn't really a spooky song but I thought it was close enough.
Such a great chaotic track originally composed by Jun Ishikawa. I had a friend remind me of an obscure fact recently - did you know this song was originally meant for a different game than Kirby's Epic Yarn? It's actually a leftover for a cancelled Kirby Wii project that predates Return to Dream Land. Some more of the leftover music made it into that game too, and a motif from "VS Yin Yarn" can be heard in two of Return to Dream Land's tracks. Pretty cool!

It's a track I wrote for a project a while back that got rejected, so now I've brought it back with one extra channel. I've been sitting on this remix (around 75% completed) for two years!! It was time for a touchup, so I spent some time and adapted it to my current style.
Hear that timpani drum? It might sound similar to the one from Super Mario 3, but it's actually something I sampled from my own equipment. I hope you notice the drums more in this version; the original song lacks most percussion so I had fun filling in my own.

It's a song that somehow sounds even more natural played by the Mario Kart band, even though originally it was created with sampled instruments in Mario Kart Tour. I tried to take inspiration from aspects of both versions for my cover, as well as taking quite a few creative liberties that you may notice... I hope my version is familiar, but maybe offers a slightly altered take on the theme.

There's also a few new composers involved in this third entry, so there's some fresh new sounds to listen to! For example, the person that composed this song also composed the music to NES Remix (Wii U), Miitopia (3DS), and Everybody Votes Channel (Wii) - maybe you can hear the resemblance? I was conscious of this connection when making my remix, so I tried to channel some aspects of the composer's style into my arrangement. I hope you enjoy it.

It's a song with a deep history in the channel dating back to March 2019... back then, I wanted to write an original theme for my channel in case I needed an intro or an outro. I'd say about half of this was finished then, but writer's block and a struggle to complete the song's natural progression made finishing the song an incredible challenge. Over those 3 years, I've counted 14 unique 'attempts' at making this song, each one better than the last, but still not quite "good enough" for me to get fully behind. Now, finally, I've grown confident behind this current version and I'm happy to be able to finally share it.

It just goes to show how one artist can have many shades to their own style. In the same way that "Green Greens" is very much a Kirby song, this song is too, yet it seems so drastically different. The darker, more uneasy Kirby tracks have been a staple of the series since Super Star, and the juxtaposition between these unsettling tracks with the bouncier level themes really tends to catch the player's attention, I think.
A few songs ago, I mentioned that I read in a HAL composer interview that Ishikawa (this song's composer) likes to take certain measures of a song and give them a 15/16 feel, or a 4/4 drum pattern during a 3/4 section. I think this song at its core is exactly what he was talking about, and that's what made it so fun for me to arrange. Out of every remix I've done so far, this may be my favorite to date. The cinematic feel allowed me to bring out my 8-bit chaos at its fullest. I hope you get at least a little bit of dread listening to this.

Back then, I had just watched Blade Runner... no doubt I was pretty inspired by Vangelis' ambient style of writing.
This song's arrangement is based on utilizing the N163 expansion audio for NES, adding additional audio channels. I also took each channel and gave it a custom stereo mix for this video... on the NES it would remain in mono unless the console is modded (yes, you can do that!).
More Kirby covers (and maybe Splatoon as well) coming soon!

Through the Tunnel is a very solid composition that brings in a lot of feeling from games like Kirby's Dream Land 3 and Kirby 64. It has this darker tone that usually wouldn't be heard so early in a Kirby game, but this is why I think I enjoyed it so much. I hope that enjoyment can be heard in my arrangement!

It was made around the exact same time as "Earth World" AKA Hectic Hike, another original song on this channel. I remember my goal was to make a track fit for a retro racing game, so I settled on a pop rock style similar to something you might hear in a Mega Man game. It also has 6 sound channels utilized rather than just 4 from the typical NES 8-BIT song, so it has a fuller and more complex mix. It's fun hearing how even two years later, my style hasn't really changed too drastically.

I took this quirky song and tried to keep all the energy intact in my arrangement. Recently, I was reading an article featuring Kirby composer Jun Ishikawa (not this song) - he described a songwriting practice of his that really interested me. He said sometimes he experiments with reducing a track's time signature, for example taking out one note to make it 15/16. It's an interesting challenge because it turns the existing song/progression on its head, forcing you to adapt it and configure it to this awkward rhythm. I was inspired by this idea for the second loop of this remix, I wonder if you can figure out what changed?

Dangerous Beast (8-Bit Cover) - Kirby and the Forgotten LandTater-Tot Tunes2022-03-28 | From: Kirby and the Forgotten Land Original Composer: Hirokazu Ando
I've been so excited for this game for two reasons: the 3D reimagining of this classic series, and the MUSIC! So far, I have not been disappointed. The soundtrack of this game brilliantly preserves the Kirby "feel" while modernizing certain aspects and improving greatly on the instrumentation.
This song in particular isn't necessarily one of the strongest Kirby boss themes, but it sets a really unique tone for the battles of this game. For this remix, I tried to preserve the epic drums and I played with the rhythm quite a bit. There's some creative liberties and changes here and there, see if you can notice them!

From Kirby Star Allies' soundtrack, Echo's Edge is probably one of my favorites. Unlike some of the other music, I feel this track gets to try something new and bring a strange, yet familiar feel to the Kirby series. For my cover, I decided to stray a bit from the Kirby's Adventure style and try to focus on keeping the chords alive and apparent.
Special thanks to Moola Mixtape for producing this artwork... just about two years ago!! I finally got around to using it, if you want to see his music/artwork since then check out his channel here: youtube.com/channel/UCDLMPaBMKk30xK0zc3PoLUA/featured

This song has a nice energetic motion to it - very fitting for an 'Opening Theme' of sorts. I arranged this to be true to the original in many ways, but I added some of my own ideas occasionally. For a series dedicated to the retro age of Rare video games, I feel this retro take on the main theme was a no-brainer. I hope you enjoy!
If you like the song and are interested in the project, please go take a look at their page (dkcreationsltd.com) for info on the graphic novel & music. If you're an old-school Rare art/music fan, it's a dream project by some of the people responsible for games like Donkey Kong Country, Killer Instinct, and Diddy Kong Racing. There's quite a few other catchy tunes already published, so maybe I'll cover another one at some point soon!

Doesn't it have sort of an acoustic feel? This song was originally composed by Kazumi Totaka, so I couldn't help but put some Animal Crossing: Wild World influences in the instrumentation.

Originally Composed by Koji Kondo (0:00 - 0:30), Shiho Fujii (0:30 - 0:44), and Asuka Hayazaki (some minor elements). I sort of combined some elements from each of the three 'SMB3 boss' versions present in the Mario series to create a new version with a more intense style of instrumentation.
I have a couple more of these full instrumental styled covers coming soon, with some 8-bit ones sprinkled throughout. Keep an eye out!

Had a LOT of fun on this one, since it's such a crazy song that switches styles like four times over the course of one loop. I really enjoyed adding the DPCM timpani samples since I felt it just added to the chaos. If you're a Kirby fan, the beginning may sound a little familiar -- it's originally composed by the same guy who wrote the "Dark Meta Knight" theme in Kirby & the Amazing Mirror.

This awesome custom artwork was created by SanS1m0n!
Always found this to be a catchy song with a unique atmosphere, which is important considering how long you'll hear it in gameplay - I feel like I probably heard this on loop for hours on end just due to how long the Pit of 100 Trials was. For the remix, I tried to preserve the feel of the original in a lot of ways, but I also experimented with the simplified instruments a bit. I hope you enjoy!

It was a surprise to learn that one of my favorite composers, Tomoya Tomita (Kirby's Epic Yarn, Yoshi's Woolly World), wrote a lot of great 8-bit music back in the NES/Famicom days for Konami. The track this is based on comes from 'Contra Force', a sidescrolling shooter & platformer. I tried to preserve a lot of the feel of the original song while imagining it as a soundtrack for 90's arcade systems. I chose instrument samples commonly found in older game soundtracks to give it a retro, yet updated feel. I hope you enjoy.

I was sort of inspired by gameplay of fights like Gohma from Zelda, and it uses a lot of instrumentation techniques and effects that I haven't used before. I really enjoyed how this one turned out.
