Mother of 4 lost her home of 11 years #shorts The Fifth Estate 2022-03-10 | Nearly 30 per cent of Canadians, or 4.4 million households, rent their home. Melanie Crawford is one of them. After living in a house in Brantford, Ont., for 11 years, her landlord called to say her family had to leave so the house could be renovated and sold.“I was devastated. We all cried,” Crawford said. She was paying $1,450 a month for the four-bedroom house. “I couldn't get a two-bedroom for that amount of money right now,” Crawford said. “So I have to pay double regardless.”The Fifth Estate calculated that between 2014 and 2019, rents across Canada have increased by nearly 20 per cent. At the same time, incomes remained largely unchanged. In B.C., the laws say they can’t.Sarah Pollner tried to get help for her teen daughter, Olivia Mahaney – known as Liv to her friends and family.By the time Liv was 15, Pollner noticed her daughter began heavily drinking alcohol, which she believes led to drugs.She encouraged Liv to see a psychiatrist, then a youth counsellor. But Pollner said Liv denied needing help, and said she had her friends to talk to.Her best friend says she was using heroin and methamphetamine.Pollner had tried setting curfews and turned to local agencies for help. By September 2021, Liv had left home and was living in shelters or with friends. Pollner was left to rely on Liv’s friends, as well as texts from her daughter.“I needed someone to make my daughter go home or there'd be consequences,” Pollner said. “I needed someone to just let me put her in detox, at least to give her a chance.” But without Liv’s consent, that was almost impossible without an arrest and charges.Dr. Tom Warshawski, a pediatrician in Kelowna, B.C., has seen many teenagers like Liv. He says hospital physicians “want the clear ability and guidelines to be able to hold these youth, give them time for some cognitive clearing, offer them treatment … or harm reduction to keep kids alive.”On Nov. 17, 2021, Liv died alone, in the doorway of a building in downtown Victoria. Inside the Williams Lake residential school: Violation of Trust (1991) - The Fifth Estate The Fifth Estate 2022-02-11 | WARNING: This documentary includes distressing details and could be triggering for some viewers. Originally broadcast on Jan. 9, 1991, “Violation of Trust,” hosted by Gillian Findlay, is an in-depth examination of Canada's residential school system and was, at the time, one of the first documentaries to reveal to a non-Indigenous audience the abuse students in the system endured. It’s important to note that some of the language used is outdated and would not be used today, nor would some of the assumptions about Indigenous people.The program focuses on St. Joseph’s Mission School, which operated from 1891 to 1981 in Williams Lake, B.C. Broadcast 10 years after the school closed, it provides what is likely the most complete visual overview of the grounds as they were when the school was in operation, an important historical record. The structures have since been demolished and in 2022, 93 potential burial sites, presumed to be the graves of children, were uncovered.We hear from survivors in the recent aftermath of their time at the school. Clergy who ran the school are asked directly about sexual abuse allegations, both personal and systemic. He infiltrated a neo-Nazi hate group and knows how they recruit #shorts The Fifth Estate 2022-01-06 | WARNING: This video contains distressing details.An anti-facist activist calling himself Tradian infiltrated a neo-Nazi organization called The Base from its inception in the summer of 2018. The Fifth Estate and researchers received access to material he gathered and we spoke to him in an exclusive interview.Tradian said he had been looking to join a neo-Nazi group in North America for years in order to destabalize the movement but never managed to get past the vetting session. Until he did.“I was the right person in the right place at the right time, and the thing that I was looking to do was engineer a disaster that would kneecap a militant national socialist movement at a very important time.” He walked away from the group in February 2020 with 80 gigabytes worth of screen grabs, videos and audio recordings. The Base Tapes, as they came to be called, became the subject of several high-profile podcasts in the United States and Australia and CBC’s White Hot Hate.Most of the recordings – about 100 – were vetting sessions of men applying for membership in The Base. Tradian said he was assigned a senior role by the group’s founder, Rinaldo Nazzaro, who tasked him with interviewing potential recruits where he was exposed to extremely racist, anti-Semitic, Islamophobic and deeply misogynistic views. Far-right accelerationists believe that violence is the only way for them to pursue their political goals to cause the collapse of liberal democracies and replace them with white ethno-nationalist states. The group offered recruits military training in addition to targeting recruits with a military background.In February 2021, Canada designated The Base as a terrorist entity. Bill Blair, the public safety minister at the time, had described it as a “neo-Nazi organization, nihilistic and accelerationist in their rhetoric.”CBC agreed to refer to Tradian by that alias to protect his identity and change his voice for reasons of personal safety.“I don’t want to have someone try and shoot at me.” For more on our interview with Tradian, tap our link in bio.
