Edward’s HiT Theme (Season 8) - Remix

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2025-11-03 | Uploads have been slow, but I wanted to try arranging another theme by Robert Hartshorne.

Here’s Hartshorne’s take on the “old iron” himself, Edward the Blue Engine. This remix of Edward’s theme is based on the one from seasons 8-12, with the ending inspired by a ditty from Edward the Great. (Side note: I didn’t realize until now that Edward the Great is the 2nd time Thomas & Friends attempted a tortoise-and-hare story, after Jack & the Pack’s version.)

I have been busier than usual lately, and cannot promise to make much more music on this channel. I may release more original themes, but again, I haven’t had much time to compose music. I’m really happy about the support and enthusiasm in this community, though.

Here’s to Edward, the oldest engine on Sodor’s Northwestern Railway. As always, enjoy!

Percy’s Theme (Short Ditty) - “Baa”

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2025-10-04 | Back in 2020, I made a short 20-second Percy ditty based on the sing-along song “Percy’s Seaside Trip.” I decided to make another short incidental ditty, this time based on a piece from the season 5 episode “Baa.”

This music was used when Percy’s driver fed a sheep cabbage leaves.

Anyway, I don’t think I’ll be doing more Q&A videos anytime soon. And the pace of this channel is definitely slowing down. But I have a new project coming up soon, and it’s something not based on Mike & Junior’s music (though still based on Thomas & Friends).

A Mini-Mission (from Q&A #7) - Stepney Bulstrode Original

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2025-09-06 | Somewhat inspired by low-fi, city pop, @SudrianAfro, and the music from seasons 1-2 of Thomas & Friends

This is an original piece I composed earlier this year. On this channel, I first used it in my latest Q&A video. Around the point where I was talking about the Big World Big Adventures era, you can hear this play in the background.

This piece starts with some light cymbals and chords on the electric piano, before moving on to more bass and grand piano. There’s a quiet interlude in the middle, and later on there’s a “bridge” that is meant to sound like an improvised lick. It’s different from my usual style, but a style I’ve wanted to do for a long time.

I’ll be releasing another interesting track soon. As always, enjoy!

The sound quality was definitely better in Q&A #6 though. I had to switch sound devices, and there's definitely some graininess in the audio. And much like Q&A #6, this video is a full 12 minutes long.

I discuss several topics about Thomas & Friends, the Railway Series, Harry Potter, trains, horror films, and other movie and media topics. There is even one question about Will Ferrell and Adam Sandler. I talk about my thoughts on season 2, season 9, the Big World Big Adventures (BWBA) era, and even bring a few takes that may be controversial in this fandom. I also mention one of my least favorite movies of all time, as well as my opinions on Alec Baldwin's narration.

And yes, I know I’m using winter thumbnails in the middle of July but, oh well. After a 5-year streak of posting winter-related themes in May of all months, what more can you expect.

Anyway, this is a short musical piece called Glimmer of Hope. It’s a slow, calming piece with brass, piano, and violins. After hearing the news of a possible Thomas & Friends reboot in 2026, as announced by Ian McCue, people in the fandom were intrigued. We still have no idea if the reboot take off, or what it will look like. Personally, I have no idea what to expect.

As always, I’m posting winter-related music during the wrong time of year, but alas. Here’s the Winter Wonderland Theme from season 6 of Thomas & Friends.

I’ve always liked the Winter Wonderland theme. Something about it is just so charming and nice to listen to. Every time I watch “It’s Only Snow,” I obsess over how good the music is. (The “Jack Frost” version is great too.)

I made a similar remix to this a couple years ago, when I released my “3 Great Themes” video. It featured the Skarloey Railway Theme (which I recently did an extended version of), this theme, and the Viaduct / Repairs theme. I plan to release more original themes this summer. As always, enjoy!

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2025-06-24 | So... I'm still working on that sound quality, and I had to switch microphones a couple times. But this is (by far) my longest Q&A video on this channel, at 12 minutes. And I don't think I'll ever make a video this long again anytime soon.

Anyway, I discuss several topics about Thomas & Friends, the Railway Series, Harry Potter, Tim Burton, trains, and other stuff. I talk about my thoughts on the Brenner era, who the best villains in Thomas are, and address many other questions. I even talk about my thoughts on "Big Fish" (2003) by Tim Burton. I also briefly touch upon what Thomas would be like if it was made / produced by Tim Burton, but I do think a whole video could be dedicated to that subject alone.

From the Rocks (Short Dramatic Theme) - Stepney Bulstrode Original

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2025-06-19 | I’m not sure exactly what this was inspired by, to be honest. Maybe those emotional breakdowns from the Substance. Maybe those weird lab experiments in Nightmare Before Christmas. Maybe the landslide scenes from Put Upon Percy or Tale of the Brave from Thomas & Friends.

Anyway, this theme is less than 1 minute long, but is meant to feel dramatic and “heavy.” Full of timpani drums, double basses, and cymbals.

Skarloey Railway Theme (Extended) - 3K SUBSCRIBERS

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2025-06-14 | “Hooray!” yelled Scruff the Scruncher.

But in all seriousness, it feels great to finally reach 3,000 subscribers. I’ll be honest, I actually had another project in mind for my 3K-sub special. But I couldn’t finish it on time, and decided to release this instead. Hopefully, I get it done later this summer.

Like most Thomas fans, I love the Skarloey Railway theme. It’s one of season 4’s most iconic themes, and was used (and remixed) all the way until season 7. For a while, I wanted to do a brief “extended version” of it, but didn’t quite know how to approach it. In the end, I decided to change as little as possible about the theme. Why fix what isn’t broken?

As I may have announced before, I’m doing a 6th Q&A for the channel. It’s almost finished. As always, enjoy!

This was a very random music idea I had. An incomplete, out-of-the-blue idea, but an idea nonetheless. I’ll start off by saying that I always found Thomas Goes Fishing to be one of the funniest, and most underrated, episodes of season 1. Everything from Thomas’ sudden desire to go fishing, to the iconic “O face” moment, is priceless.

I’m happy to reach 3K subscribers on this channel. While I do plan on making a 3K subscriber special at some point, I’m definitely behind schedule. But… better late than never, right?

Bulstrode & Rusty Repair the Bridge (Mashup)

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2025-05-24 | My channel name is Stepney Bulstrode Music, and don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten about the “Bulstrode” part of my name.

Last year, I released an original theme for Bulstrode the Barge, called “Bulstrode’s Redemption Theme.” It was a triumphant piece meant to give Bulstrode the happy ending he deserved, after the events of Special Attraction (from both season 4 of Thomas & Friends and the Railway Series). And not long ago, I made a mashup similar to this one, called “Stepney & Rusty Repair the Bridge.” So I decided to make a sequel to that mashup. This is just a nice, calm ditty dedicated to Bulstrode, working in his new life.

Donald & Douglas’ Heavy Goods Theme

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2025-05-17 | It’s been a long time since Donald & Douglas got some spotlight on this channel. “Och aye!” agreed the twins.

So I decided to do a little remixing and revamping for this version of Donald & Douglas’ theme. This is the Scottish twins’ “heavy goods theme.” It’s full of heavy drums, bagpipes and flutes.

I took some inspiration from my past renditions of Donald & Douglas’ theme, as well as a ditty from “Bad Day at Castle Loch” from season 7. Maybe I should make a Donald & Douglas playlist, now that I’ve been doing this so many times for other characters.

I once again want to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Thomas & Friends and the Railway Series. I want to do something special for the anniversary, but it’ll take time. As always, enjoy!

While I want to celebrate this anniversary with a musical theme, I should probably release this first. It’s a quick mashup I made, based on a theme I did a long time ago. It’s the “Rusty Repairs the Bridge” ditty from the season 4 episode Special Funnel.

I had to dig deep into the archives to find this file. But I’m glad I did, and this mashup could be possible. I’ll soon be releasing another mashup similar to this one. But for now, I’m just really happy we got to see the 1983 “Down the Mine” pilot. It was such a surreal experience. As always, enjoy!

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2025-05-01 | Here is my fourth Q&A on this channel! It’s been only a few weeks since the last time I made a question-and-answer video. For this one, I answered as many questions as I could. This includes who my favorite narrator from the TVS is, what my favorite Railway Series book is, etc. I took inspiration from both the YouTube comments / community posts and Twitter / X.

Much like last time, I tried experimenting with the footage that I used. I wanted to make the video more engaging, by using clips from Thomas & Friends, Jack & the Pack, etc. You'll be seeing footage from specials such as The Adventure Begins, Sodor's Legend of the Lost Treasure, and Journey Beyond Sodor. I also decided to add a bit more humor. But... I'm still working on the sound quality.

Most of these topics are about Thomas & Friends. The show, the episodes, the music, the Railway Series, etc. Characters like Thomas, Gordon, and the CGI characters are also briefly talked about. I also got a couple questions about music in general, as well as one of my biggest interests outside of this fandom (Harry Potter). You'll be finding out who my favorite Harry Potter character is. Stepney Bulstrode Music 2025-04-28 | This piece of music is (slightly) inspired by Stepney’s theme, especially the middle and end parts. And since I released “Stepney the Bluebell Engine’s Theme” earlier this week, I thought, why not upload this!

I originally got this idea from the episode “Chickens to School” from season 8 of Thomas & Friends. And yes, I know, this episode is bad. One of the worst of the HiT era, if I’m being honest. But… the visual of chickens dancing around in a classroom is pretty funny.

So I decided to compose a theme for the chickens taking place of students in the classroom. After doing more old-timey pieces like “Knell of the Bell,” I thought, may as well release something a bit more goofy and light-hearted. As always, enjoy!

Earlier this year, on April Fools Day, I uploaded a video with a thumbnail featuring Stepney (from the season 4 episode Bowled Out), and it was called “Stepney’s theme.” But of course, it wasn’t. It was an original joke piece I made called “Tuba Sting.”

However, this simple trick inspired me to create a new remix of Stepney’s theme. And since Stepney’s theme is one of my favorite themes in all of Thomas & Friends, I thought, why not!

I’ve been listening to some of my past renditions of Stepney’s theme, and I’ll be honest, I’ve been noticing a few “mistakes” here and there. Wrong notes, wrong timing, etc. Of course, some of those imperfections were intentional (especially for mashups, as sacrifices have to be made to make them work). But I wanted to create a more “accurate” version of Stepney’s theme.

This remix features chimes, bassoons, clarinets, and strings. The second half also has a piano in the background. And in the middle, you’ll hear a brief incidental ditty. The whole piece is inspired by both Stepney’s season 4 and season 5 themes.

Idyllic Isle (Daily Trains) - Stepney Bulstrode Original

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2025-04-14 | This is an original piece of music I made a little while ago. I thought it suited the “Thomas & Friends” sound, mixing elements of Mike & Junior’s style with Hartshorne’s. And just as a heads-up, I’ll be making another big upload soon.

The main theme (playing at the beginning and end) is meant to be a cute, slice-of-life piece of music. Many of my instrument choices are the same as Mike & Junior’s, including the bassoon and the pizzicato strings. But I also used elements of Hartshorne’s brass and light-hearted style, kind of like in the Nitrogen / Miller era. I wanted to capture some of the same energy as Hartshorne’s music in seasons 13-16.

The middle section is inspired by a musical ditty from season 5. It’s the one that plays in Oliver’s Find, Lady Hatt’s Birthday Party, Toby’s Discovery, and Busy Going Backwards.

There are a couple other ditties, and then I go back to playing the main theme again.

I even answer a few questions that I missed for my last Q&A. I took inspiration from both the YouTube comments / community posts and Twitter / X.

Tuba Sting - Stepney Bulstrode Original

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2025-03-31 | Stepney is one of my favorite characters in Thomas & Friends. Considering that my username is “Stepney Bulstrode,” and that my Twitter / X tag is “Bluebells Forever,” this is probably not a surprise to anyone. But today, I wanted to make this special music arrangement in honor of Stepney.

So… happy April Fools! This is an original piece of music I made called “Tuba Sting.” I used loud tubas and percussion for this, as well as a bit of accordion in the background. I was (sort of) inspired by Thomas & the Tuba, the first episode of season 8 and the HiT Entertainment era.

Toy Factory (inspired by “Thomas & the Toy Shop”) - Stepney Bulstrode Original

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2025-03-19 | When I posted my other original piece, Knell of the Bell, I said I would make another theme in a similar style. This idea was inspired by the season 9 episode “Thomas & the Toy Shop.” I also took some inspiration from @SudrianAfro’s original music.

“Toy Factory” is very percussion-heavy, with lots of chimes, bells and vibraslaps. It also has some piano, brass, violins and flutes. Compared to most of my other original themes, this one is bouncier and more high-energy.

At some point, I want to do another questions-and-answers video. I made a Q&A last year, and I hope to do it again. So if you have any questions, be sure to write it in the comments. As always, enjoy!

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2025-03-11 | As promised, here is an original piece of music. This one is called “Knell of the Bell.” It has a lot of brass, piano, chime sounds, and an overall old-timey style. And yes, I was inspired by Toby the Tram Engine when I was making this.

I wanted to do something different with my music, so I decided to go with something with a bit more swing, and more percussion. There will be another original theme in this style very soon.

I’m glad I got my Skarloey Railway compilation (Rheneas, Sir Handel and Peter Sam’s themes) out of the way, so I can focus on music like this.

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2025-02-15 | It’s almost the 80th anniversary of the Railway Series, wow!

Here is a slow, orchestral piece I made. It’s inspired by some incidental cues and ditties from Thomas & Friends, especially from season 4. I made two versions of this theme, each with different endings. The second ending is inspired by a bit from my old Skarloey Railway Brass Ensemble remix.

You’ll be hearing some oboes, strings, wooden percussion, and flutes. It’s one of my slowest original pieces to date, so I wonder what you think of this style. As always, enjoy!

It’s one of my favorite pieces of music in Thomas & Friends. And I love how it can sound so grand, sad or emotional, depending on how you arrange it. I also love the picture I used for the thumbnail, a promotional photo taken from Henry’s Forest.

Sir Topham Hatt’s Dramatic Theme - Old OST

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2025-02-11 | I made this soundtrack a long time ago, back in 2020, for Cosmic’s “Fat Controller Movie.”

It has little snippets of Sir Topham Hatt’s theme throughout the piece. There are other music cues as well, including the intro to Rossini’s William Tell Overture. Overall, it’s very string-heavy and oboe-heavy.

Sir Topham Hatt’s theme is one of the most iconic and well-known in Thomas & Friends. Hopefully it’ll get some more attention again. As always, enjoy!

Duck the Great Western Engine’s Theme (Church Organ)

But I decided to put approach this one differently, by making it more similar to the version of Duck’s theme on Mike O’Donnell’s YouTube channel. This idea kind of came out of nowhere, but when I’m inspired I’m inspired. I decided to add a little drumming ditty at the beginning, before jumping into the main part of the music.

I just wanted to add: I would love to make some original soundtrack music for another Thomas project at some point. I don’t know when, but I hope it’ll happen. It’s been a while since I’ve made OST stuff, so I’ll let you know if I do.

One last thing: I want to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Thomas & Friends (and the Railway Series).

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2025-01-17 | Here is a little “tribute to trains” that I made. It’s an original theme that is dedicated to the sounds of steam engines and locomotives, and to Thomas & Friends.

You can hear the sound of train whistles (using recorders and flutes), as well as some strong drums and percussion. A bit like what the Sounds song did, but, without as many sound effects.

I’ve always liked this promotional photo of Thomas from season 2 (episode Better Late than Never). But I haven’t used it for my videos until now, since using a picture of Thomas’ angry face never really fit the “vibe.” Still, I’ll be releasing more original themes later this month. The Red Balloon Theme - RIP Britt Allcroft (with Documentary Footage)

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2025-01-04 | Britt Allcroft has recently passed away. She was the woman who adapted the Reverend Wilbert Awdry’s Railway Series stories to TV. She was the one who created Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends, Shining Time Station, and the franchise we have loved. She was a big part of many people’s childhoods, including mine.

So here is a tribute to her. May she rest in peace

The footage in the video is from two Thomas & Friends episodes, Edward & Gordon from season 1 and Emily’s New Coaches from season 7.

And the audio is from an interview I found on @Oliver11GWR ‘s channel. Britt talks about how she met Awdry while filming a documentary about steam engines, and how she was inspired to adapt the Railway Series to TV.

Train Departs in the Snow - Stepney Bulstrode Original

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2024-12-30 | Here’s my final upload for 2024! It’s been a great year, and I’ve been happy to post many videos on this channel, both Thomas & Friends remixes and original themes. And let’s hope for the best in 2025. I’m sure that Thomas’ 80th anniversary will be on everyone’s minds.

This theme is quite different from some of my other original themes. It’s very piano-heavy, and has a different tone from many of my other musical pieces.

“Train Departs in the Snow” is partly inspired by Vince Guaraldi’s score for Peanuts / Charlie Brown. I’m not used to making music in this style, but it’s nice to try new things. As always, enjoy!

Merry Christmas and happy holidays! I hope everyone is having a good winter. This is one of the last original themes I’m posting this year, but there will be one more, and it will be winter-themed.

Night Train has always been one of my favorite sing-along songs in Thomas & Friends. As you may know, I’ve done Night Train remixes and mashups in the past. I made Night Train mashups of Oliver’s theme, Toby’s theme, Gordon’s theme, Stepney’s theme, and Murdoch’s theme.

But lately, I wanted to make my own original piece of music, in the style of Night Train. So here is my new piece, Behind the Mask. As always, enjoy!

3 Steps Away, 3 Steps Astray - Stepney Bulstrode Original

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2024-12-19 | Here’s a new original theme by me, called Three Steps Away, Three Steps Astray. It’s a creepy, sinister, and rather repetitive piece of music.

I’ve always loved those eerie instrumental tracks you might hear on Halloween, and I am also a big fan of Tim Burton. I’ve also listened to quite a few tracks by @Myuu . So it was only a matter of time before I made something like this.

Before, when I made creepy music on this channel, it was mostly remixes of existing themes from Thomas & Friends. Stuff like James’ Sinister Theme or Toby’s Ominous Theme. I did made a couple originals too though. The Smelters Yard Theme and the Scrapped Engines Theme are examples of that. And while I’m aware it’s the winter holidays and Halloween is long gone, I still wanted to give this a shot.

A winter original theme is coming soon. As always, enjoy!

Neville’s Theme (Finale) - Stepney Bulstrode Original

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2024-12-14 | I’m back with a revamped version of my old original theme, the one I made for Neville the New Engine. The sound effects and instrument-mixing have all been fixed. It’s a shame we didn’t see much of Neville after season 9 of Thomas & Friends. But I’m happy to put him in the spotlight here.

I’m coming out with some newer pieces of music soon. But my life is pretty busy at the moment. This time of year is usually like that. But I hope everyone has a merry Christmas and gets to enjoy the holidays.

I’m also excited for next year. It’ll be the 80th anniversary of the Railway Series, so let’s see what happens.

“Flying” - Stepney Bulstrode Original

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2024-12-05 | The thumbnail is a promotional shoot from season 7, featuring Thomas the Tank Engine and Harold the Helicopter. One of my favorite promo pics from the whole season. But… this music isn’t really about them.

This is a short piece I made for fun. It’s inspired by some of the music I’ve heard by Mike O’Donnell and Junior Campbell (especially their stuff from seasons 4-7 of Thomas & Friends), John Williams and Nicholas Hooper (from Harry Potter), and my own previous works. Kind of sounds like my theme for Dudley, now that I think about it.

Murdoch’s Theme (Finale) - Season 7

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2024-11-27 | Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Thanksgiving is a time I like to spend with my family and loved ones. It’s also a time where I have to make an awkward decision… should I be watching Thomas & Percy’s Mountain Adventure or not?

Anyway, here’s an orchestral remix of Murdoch’s theme from season 7 of Thomas & Friends. I’ve always liked Murdoch. His character, his design, and of course his musical theme. It’s a shame we didn’t see much of him in the HiT era, and it would’ve been nice to see him again in CGI. But it’s clear the fandom has never forgotten about him.

So here’s my repeated tribute to Murdoch, the heavy goods engine. There will be another original theme soon. As always, enjoy!

San Francisco Tugboats (inspired by TUGS) - Stepney Bulstrode Original

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2024-11-20 | A few days ago, I uploaded an “incidental ditties” video for Sam the Giant American Engine. I love the merchandise-only characters in Thomas & Friends, and it’s nice to see some American engines in the show. But… what about when Thomas came to America?

In my pinned comment from my last video, I said I’d make another TUGS-styled original theme. And here it is!

In the Big World Big Adventures movie, Thomas visits San Francisco. He goes to a pier, and sees the famous Golden Gate Bridge. Of course, the Bay Area of California is also known for its tugboats. And when David Mitton and Robert Cardona were creating the series TUGS, they were inspired by the harbors in New York and San Francisco.

I have been to San Francisco, and have seen the tugboats in-person before. So I wanted to dedicate this new theme to those treasures. As always, enjoy!

Sam’s Theme (Incidental & Resolution Ditties) - Stepney Bulstrode Original

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2024-11-13 | Yes, this picture was taken from the Big World Big Adventures movie. Out of the 3 merchandise-only characters in Thomas & Friends, Sam was the only one who appeared in the show itself. It’s only a brief appearance, but at least it’s something.

Anyway, I wanted to make some more music for Sam the American engine. So I decided to make these incidental pieces. These are mostly based on ditties Mike & Junior made in seasons 4-7. The first piece is based on a common ditty used in season 4, especially on the Skarloey Railway, when something went wrong. The “resolution” ditty is based on a theme that was used in seasons 6-7. And the last part is a slow version of Sam’s theme.

Happy 40 Years to Thomas & Friends - 3 Compositions

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2024-10-11 | The long-running and beloved TV show, Thomas & Friends, just turned 40 years old. Its first episode, Thomas & Gordon (or Thomas Gets Tricked) aired in 1984. I grew up with this show, and later began reading the Railway Series books. I cannot believe the show is this old now.

Thomas the Tank Engine has influenced me in so many ways. It has inspired me to be interested in railway history, art, and composing music. So to show my appreciation, I decided to re-release 3 of my favorite Thomas theme remakes. These are Fergus the Cement Works Engine’s Theme, Daisy the Diesel Rail car’s Theme, and Harvey the Crane Engine’s theme. All are orchestral remixes of the originals.

Sam’s Theme - Thomas & Friends (Stepney Bulstrode Original)

Stepney Bulstrode Music 2024-10-03 | Sam, the large American goods engine, finally gets his own theme! He’s one of three merchandise-only characters in Thomas & Friends (the others being Logan the shunting diesel and Dustin the snowplow engine). And now, I have made themes for all 3 merch-only characters.

It was fun making music for these guys, as they don’t get much attention from the TV show or fandom anymore.

Sam is one of several American steam engines that came to the Island of Sodor. Others include Rosie, Hank, and Stanley (in the Railway Series). And Sam is probably the largest engine to have ever visited Sodor. He makes all the other engines look tiny by comparison! It’s too bad he never got an episode to himself.
