Arches: The Ancient Bones of Modern Architecture Fiske Planetarium 2022-02-24 | The arch is a simple piece of technology that revolutionized civilization in Spain. Arches are used in aqueducts, bridges, castles, cathedrals, mosques and synagogues, and form many ancient and modern buildings of Spain (and much of Europe). Different cultures, ideas and time periods influenced the arch throughout Spanish history, improving its aesthetic and structural qualities. But no influence on the arch was more revolutionary than that proposed and implemented by the architect Antoni Gaudí. By designing arches upside down, he used naturally shaped “catenary” arches in his designs, which are not only stronger, but arguably more beautiful. He demonstrated that even the most resolute and reliable technologies can be improved with a simple change of perspective. What are stagnant ideas in our society, culture, or sciences that could use a new point of view?Corey Trujillo is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and studies methods of cleaning petroleum-contaminated soil using concentrated solar power. Born and raised in rural Nevada, Trujillo grew up with a strong appreciation for the beauty of nature which deepened during a semester he spent exploring art and architecture in Spain. He strives to build bridges between technical and creative fields and enjoys gardening, cooking and building in his spare time. Drifting North - Trailer Fiske Planetarium 2022-02-03 | More than two dozen scientists, engineers, educators, and others from the University of Colorado Boulder and NOAA will join scientists from 16 other nations for the international MOSAiC mission starting this fall: the Multidisciplinary Drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate. MOSAiC is an unprecedented international research expedition to study the physical, chemical, and biological processes that couple the Arctic atmosphere, sea ice, ocean, and ecosystem. The German icebreaker Polarstern will begin MOSAiC’s journey in Tromsö, Norway, sailing north of the Northern Lights and parking against a block of sea ice. The Polarstern will drift with the ice for 13 full months, much like the ship of Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen 125 years ago.Two CU Boulder graduate students, funded by the National Science Foundation, are working with Fiske to produce a planetarium show about this expedition. Where Only a Few Have Gone Before: How Humans Live and Work in Space Fiske Planetarium 2022-01-25 | Have you ever wondered what it’s like to live in space, or how your favorite science fiction movie compares to the real thing? Join us for a journey through film and history as we discuss the way artists and filmmakers have inspired real-life engineers and influenced the way our astronauts live and work in space. We’ll discuss the early days of science fiction, the original Star Trek, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and more recent films such as the Martian. We’ll also be learning what it takes to keep humans alive and well in orbit around Earth, and how we can study the effects of spaceflight in places here on the ground. Annika Rollock is a PhD student in Bioastronautics at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Originally from New Jersey, Annika completed her BS in aeronautical and astronautical engineering from MIT in 2018, where she also rowed competitively at the Division I level and minored in creative writing. Her PhD research is on the design of future deep space habitats, through which she works with NASA on the HOME (Habitats Optimized for Missions of Exploration) project. Penrose Tilings, Quasicrystals, and Islamic Architecture Fiske Planetarium 2021-12-15 | What do the floor of the Oxford mathematics department and Medieval Islamic architecture have in common? They both feature a particular kind of mathematical pattern called aperiodic tilings. In the 1960s and 1970s, mathematicians found different sets of shapes that could be put on a flat surface in such a way that the pattern never exactly repeats, so matter how many tiles you use. Roger Penrose created one of the most famous of these tilings, involving just two different shapes: a kite and a dart. Though Penrose is credited for this discovery, a version of this very same mathematical tiling appears in Medieval Islamic architecture dating to the 1400s. Additionally, in the same way that a set of cubes is the three-dimensional version of a tiling of squares, these aperiodic tilings provide the basis for the atomic structure of newly discovered set of materials called quasi-crystals. In this talk, we explore how this one mathematical idea appears in surprising and beautiful places.Catherine Blume is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in astrophysics at the University of Colorado Boulder. She earned her B.A. in physics from Princeton University in 2018, where she studied Earth's magnetosphere. At CU, she studies the solar interior using fluid simulations. When she is not buried beneath equations, she enjoys crocheting cat sweaters, being outside with friends, and baking banana cupcakes with (what some would say is too much) chocolate frosting. A View From Earth - Ep 31: It’s Okay to Change Your Mind Fiske Planetarium 2021-11-11 | Most people assume that students of astronomy and astrophysics are inevitably destined for a career in research or teaching, including the students themselves. Many universities perpetuate this with a lack of career counseling and advising at both the undergraduate and graduate level. However, there are many options for STEM degree-holders besides academia! This week we bring on a guest who has been on both sides of the line. We talk about the differences between academia and industry, why schools shouldn’t emphasize one over the other, and why it’s never too late to start something new! Dr. Charles Danforth is a former faculty member at CU Boulder who has now moved into the private sector. As an employee of Digital Globe/Maxar, he uses his knowledge of satellites and instrumentation gained as an astronomer to produce global maps of locations all over the world, tracking land use changes, forest fires, and other Earth systems for scientific and non-scientific purposes. His experiences in both academia and industry have made him an advocate for the many career options available to STEM degree-holders beyond teaching and research, as well as for the view that it’s never too late to change your career trajectory. A View From Earth - Ep 30: The Sound(ing) of Science Fiske Planetarium 2021-11-04 | Big powerful rockets may get all the glory, but did you know you don’t need to send instruments into orbit to do really valuable research? Sounding rockets are specifically designed to fly scientific instruments in the region between weather balloons and satellites, allowing us to make measurements that only require being above most of the Earth’s atmosphere. They are also frequently used to study the atmosphere itself! This week we talk with a scientist who specializes in using sounding rockets to research everything from nearby planets to galactic evolution to the structure of the universe itself! Dr. Kevin France is the Associate Chair for Graduate Studies at CU Boulder. His research focuses on exoplanets and their host stars, protoplanetary disks, and the development of instrumentation for ultraviolet astrophysics. Dr. France was a member of the HST-COS instrument and science teams, is a regular guest observer with Hubble and ground-based telescopes, is a member of NASA's LUVOIR Science and Technology Definition Team. A View From Earth - Ep 29: Students Studying the Sun with STEAM Fiske Planetarium 2021-11-04 | Life as a student these days can involve much more than just classes. Several new NASA initiatives aim to involve college students in mission science in all areas, including instrument design and development. NASA’s new PUNCH mission includes a student-built x-ray spectrometer as part of its instrument suite, which will provide valuable diagnostic data that can help the PUNCH team understand how the corona is heated as well as how the solar wind undergoes its initial acceleration from the surface of the Sun. This week we talk with one CU student who is the project manager for the instrument team, facilitating the collaboration between students and scientists. Mary Hanson is a CU student and project manager for the Student Thermal Energetic Activity Module (STEAM), part of NASA’s PUNCH mission, where she helps to explore and coordinate outreach opportunities between the STEAM Team and the PUNCH Outreach Program. Her own outreach experience includes giving presentations at Colorado high schools and middle schools about her experiences in engineering. A View From Earth - Ep 28: A One-Two PUNCH of Science and Outreach Fiske Planetarium 2021-11-03 | NASA’s PUNCH mission is a suite of small satellites that aim to study the Sun’s outer atmosphere, the corona, and how the corona accelerates to become the solar wind that fills the solar system. That’s the official description anyway; beyond just the science, PUNCH also has a plan to activate the theme of Ancient & Modern Sun watching to extend heliophysics outreach to underserved and underrepresented populations as well as to the broader public in the American Southwest and beyond. This week we talk with PUNCH’s PI, Dr. Craig DeForest, about how combining high-tech science investigation, amateur observation, and indigenous and historical knowledge gives us a more complete and robust vision of our space weather environment.Dr. Craig DeForest has studied the Sun, its corona, and the solar wind for over 30 years. Currently, Dr. DeForest leads the Heliophysics division at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder and is the Principal Investigator for NASA’s PUNCH mission, a NASA Small Explorer (SMEX) mission to better understand how the mass and energy of the Sun’s corona become the solar wind that fills the solar system. He is well known for his expertise in solar data analysis and reduction, and is also he Vice-Chair of the American Astronomical Society's Solar Physics Division. A View From Earth - Ep 27: Australias Aboriginal Skies Fiske Planetarium 2021-11-03 | As long as there have been people on the Earth there have been astronomers, those who studied and tried to make sense of the sky. Though Western science tends to focus on contributions by the ancient Greeks and Romans, astronomy has always been a significant cultural teaching tool around the world. Our guest this week is a native Australian who uses performance art and storytelling to bring to life the creation story told in the stars by an Aboriginal tribe in the northern part of the continent. His work not only celebrates the teachings of these Aboriginal peoples but helps to preserve their culture and ensure their legacy through their understanding of the sky. Paul Taylor is an acclaimed Aussie performing artist who delights in celebrating the culture of his homeland through story, song, dance, painting and didgeridoo. Paul performs throughout the U.S. and Australia to all ages and conducts school residencies. He has been a beloved annual guest at Fiske Planetarium for over 12 years, presenting his show “Aboriginal Skies: In the Land of the Lightning People.” This planetarium show celebrates the vast Star Law of Australian Wardaman Aboriginal Elder, Yidumduma Bill Harney, of whom Paul was a student for over 25 years.
