While Portuguese food and culture may be well loved, the country’s unique sleds are often overlooked. Located on the Portuguese island of Madeira in the city of Monte, the so-called “carros de sesto do Monte” are wooden sleds that go downhill from the top of the city to the downtown. Guided by two drivers, they can reach max speeds of up to 38 kilometers per hour and arrive at the bottom in about 10 minutes. These two drivers move the sleds by guiding them along with a rope and using their rubber shoes to brake when necessary. And this used to all be in service of the townspeople, the sleds are now mainly enjoyed by tourists. This has led to a bump in price, and it now costs between 30 to 52 dollars for a ride without including tips and picture fees. OLDEST Road on Earth Top Fives 2024-09-23 | Step aside pyramids; Ancient Egypt’s most impressive relic may just be Lake Moeris Quarry Road. While not as large or grand, it holds the title of being the world’s oldest paved roadway. Built sometime between 2500 and 2100 BC, it spans for 12 kilometers between a quarry and nearby Lake Moeris. This quarry was special because its rocks were used to build the pyramids. To get there, the rocks would be transported on the road by sled to Lake Moeris. From there, they would go by boat from the lake to the Nile River, where they were then floated to Giza. The road was also special; after all, it is the only paved road in Ancient Egypt that we know of. Stretching across California, it’s not only the world’s largest fault, but also one of its most dangerous. Extending for 1,200 kilometers, it’s split into three sections. According to scientists, the most southern one, which covers Los Angeles, may be in trouble very soon. In 2006, a famous study found that the San Andreas Fault was due to produce an earthquake with a magnitude of 7 or more. The problem is that the researchers believe it will strike Los Angeles. Thankfully, no major earthquake has happened since that study was published. Furthermore, the US Geological Survey has a somewhat sunnier view. In November of 2013, they forecasted that there was a 7 percent chance that an earthquake of magnitude 8 or more will occur sometime in the next 30 years somewhere along the fault line.
