A-Bit of JoJos Bizarre Adventure (Chip Clip) Joe Jeremiah 2023-12-22 | Behind the Bits 79(A-Bit of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure was posted to YouTube on Jul 29, 2023)There was about four years between ep 78 and 79. I stopped making videos for more than one reason, but I know that one of the reasons was that I felt like I was getting too old, crossing my fingers that I would be able to make a living out of them when really, I had no idea how to do that. I used to make pizzas for a living and I remember being recognised for the first time while I was at work. They were excited and kind, but afterwards all I could think was, “dammit, I thought I would look cooler than this if I ever got recognised.” Haha Such is life I suppose… A lot of my friends had started to get 'real jobs' and I felt like life was leaving me behind. So part of the reason I stopped making content was because I needed a new job, and if it wasn’t going to be YouTube, I would find something else. I did find a new job and I’m much happier. I’ve also gone back to study psychology and will graduate my undergrad next year. I’m thinking of doing some sort of PhD on the psychology of music after that and become some kind of professor. This year however, I have also been flooded with creative motivation. I have other ideas that I’m working on that I am really excited about. New things! Different things! Good things! I wanted to start working on them immediately so I could show you guys, but then I realised that I haven’t said hello in a long time. It didn’t feel right for me to just come back with a whole changed up style. I wanted to send A-Bit of 8-Bit out in style and say thanks for supporting me for the last ten years. It would have been one last video but why make 79 episodes when 80 is right there. I almost made A-Bit of Pizza Tower before I realised that the JoJo video had more potential. I spent almost as much time practicing my poses as I did the keyboard parts haha This might be my biggest medley. After all these years I am proud that I can still make these things. And the best thing is, I’m not making these last videos for money – I’m making them because it’s fun!---It’s been 10 years! You could talk to almost anybody about it – everyone was watching. This video was released during the final season and it was EVERYWHERE. It’s sad how the show has been tarred with the bad ending brush. It seems like people have forgotten about GoT, but I think we should remember that it’s a brilliant story. Hopefully George gets the books out soon…For some reason, this video did not do as well as it should have given the circumstances. My theory is that the algorithm probably penalized me for calling it “A-Bit of Game of Thrones” when I already had a video named that… I only just recently changed it to add the “2”. This video is a product of its time. It was made during the great Pewdiepie vs T-Series war of 2019. I have tuned into PewDiePie’s stuff a fair bit throughout the years, but never more than in 2019. Looking back, it does feel like this marked a shift in the “vibe” of YouTube – with more big budget channels gentrifying the amateurish feel of the site before that. I still love YouTube, don’t get me wrong, but it is different now. Back then you really felt like you could hit the big time if you just made a really good video. I don’t know if it’s the same for channels starting out anymore. Maybe they’ve all moved to TikTok?Anyways, I still watch Pewd’s videos every now and then. I won my first Wii in a kid's magazine competition by drawing a big poster explaining why I needed it in 25 words or less (I obeyed the rules; they said nothing about how many pictures you could draw though). For reasons I can’t remember, I sold that Wii. When I was a mid-teen I had my first job and as a result, had some cash to spend. Come Christmas time, I was hopelessly wondering around the shops trying to figure out what to get my family. Then it came to me: A Nintendo Wii! I suppose I kind of bought this for myself but nevertheless, it was genuinely something that the whole family enjoyed playing together. One time my dad got a perfect streak in Wii bowling, and I have never figured out how he did it…For the record, my favourite Wii game is Twilight Princess. It’s still a front-runner for my favourite Zelda (between OoT, Twilight Princess, BotW and TotK).---It’s been 10 years! A-Bit of Touhou (Chip Clip) Joe Jeremiah 2023-12-09 | Behind the Bits 70(A-Bit of Touhou was posted to YouTube on Feb 25, 2018)At the time of writing this (August 2023), A-Bit of Touhou is close to reaching 1 million views on YouTube. It is by far the biggest surprise to me out of all my videos. When I make these videos, I endeavour to understand the game/show/movie/meme/artist from the inside. I like to understand what the music means to the fanbase, and hopefully become a fan myself. For most of my videos I've chosen to cover music I was already a fan of, so this was easy, but once I started getting requests I had to work harder to understand the music people were asking for. When you’re holding yourself to a weekly post schedule it’s not always possible to become a diehard fan (not to mention the fact that some things just aren’t for you…). All of this is to say that I did NOT understand Touhou from the inside, nor how big a fanbase it had, so when I see that it has been so popular despite how little I know, I wonder what I could have accomplished if I been a bigger fan. A-Bit of Anime 1 was largely composed in my head because I was on holiday, away from my keyboard, while a was arranging it. This is how the process would go: I would sing a song - say “Déjà vu” - and then put something on the end of it - say something from JoJos - then I would ask myself “how do you feel?” If the answer was ‘good’ I wrote it down and moved onto the next song, if not I’d try something else. I repeated this process until eventually, I had a full video! This process of mushing songs together and seeing if it works sounds really simple but that’s how most of my medleys are made. I love the grit of Bloody Stream in the first half of the video but the AoT to Deja Vu to Pokemon finale is my favourite part.---It’s been 10 years! I realise that it’s different to the original, but to me, this arrangement is so much fun and I get a kick out of watching this video. There aren’t many songs that have hit me so hard on a first listen that I am transported back to that moment, but this is one of them. In early 2017 some friends and I were listening to Triple J’s Hottest 100 (the biggest music countdown of the year in Australia) and Redbone came in at number 4… “What is this?!” I remember thinking, and then… the power went out. “Nooooooooooo! Turn it back on!” The power came back on a few minutes later, but the song had ended. That didn’t matter though because it left an impression on me, so I searched it up and blasted “Awaken! A-Bit of Undertale (Chip Clip) Joe Jeremiah 2023-11-16 | Behind the Bits 53(A-Bit of Undertale was posted to YouTube on Apr 8, 2017)When I took 2014-2016 off from video making, I also stopped playing video games. So when I came back and noticed that literally everyone was requesting Undertale, I had never even heard of it… But it became unavoidable – an indie game behemoth with one of the tastiest melodic soundtracks in modern gaming. I needed to check it out. I remember listening to the soundtrack whilst trying to fall asleep on the floor in an air-conditioned lounge room during a hot summer night; I remember listening to the soundtrack on a plane while my Apple earbuds fought the volume of the winds roaring outside; I remember listening to the soundtrack when I… played Undertale (go figure)… I wanted to do this video right, so for a month or two I absorbed Undertale into my system. When it came to the arrangement it was as if it was obvious which songs needed to transition into each other (to be fair Toby Fox cross-embedded motifs all over the place so it wasn’t too difficult). What came out of this process is one of the arrangements that I am still happiest with. But the arrangement is only half the battle, there is also the performance, and in this video, I kicked its butt. Sometimes when I record my solos I overextend myself (read: try too hard) and fall out of time or blunder some phrases. When this happens, the take is over and I have to start again. During Megalovania I am riding the line between an amazing solo and overkill so hard, BUT I make it through by the skin of my teeth and I think this tension makes it one of my best solos in the series.I’ve heard people say that you just never know which videos will blow up and which ones will miss, but I strongly felt I had a winner with this one, and time has borne this out. As of Aug 2023, it’s my most-watched video and one of the ones I’m most proud of.---It’s been 10 years! A-Bit of Breath of the Wild (Chip Clip) Joe Jeremiah 2023-11-15 | Behind the Bits 52(A-Bit of Breath of the Wild was posted to YouTube on Mar 9, 2017)This video has a lot of moments that I am proud of – the intro section, Rito Village, the outro section – but the part when the Guardian theme transitions into the Molduga theme is my favourite. I was so pumped for BotW – partly because Zelda is my favourite game franchise of all time and partly because it’s got some of the best video game music of all time. So, I was a little at a loss when the game came out and the soundtrack was super stripped back. Where were the catchy melodies?? Don’t get me wrong I think the soundtrack works perfectly for the game, but I had taken a week off work to play the game and release a video as fast as possible! What was I going to do with this soundtrack?! Evidently, I did manage to find key tracks within the soundtrack that I could arrange into a big 8-bit medley and I’m ultimately happy with how it turned out 😊To simplify how Gameboys make sound: there are four channels, and you would typically use them as lead, harmony, bass and drums. The limited number of voices forces chiptune 8-bit composers to get creative in order to express musically complex ideas… I cheated in this video by using THREE GAMEBOYS (and a synth). This was a lot of fun to make, but also stressful because if I pressed play on one Gameboy and it was slightly out of sync with another I would have to restart the whole video – which I did… many times... After spending three days finishing the game, two days arranging and one day recording, I was exhausted, but the video turned out great.Lastly, please DO NOT play BotW or TotK in this rushed way. For a long time, I regretted that I had wolfed down a game that is supposed to be played at an easy and playful pace. Trying to cram it into a tiny window so that I could make a viral video made the experience of BotW less enjoyable than it would have been otherwise. Another reason why I’m so glad I got to play Tears of the Kingdom properly :’)---It’s been 10 years! To be honest with you, there were times during my three-year intermission when I had no intention of ever making videos again, but every now and then someone would tell me they thought the videos were cool and it would remind me that I had this YouTube channel as a creative outlet… I’ve found that inspiration is unwieldy – it’s difficult to make yourself inspired; it happens in its own time. I like to compare it to Charizard in this sense 😊 In late 2016/early 2017 that time had come for me again. A-Bit of The Beatles is an interesting video in the series. Once again I tried a “real” visual style. I thought this could start to bridge the gap between my chiptune covers and allow me to explore other genres (which I would do in “Piano Joe”). Secondly, the music is a mixed bag – on the one hand, I think this arrangement is really cool and marks a definite shift towards creating medleys over single songs. However, the production is still wonting. After coming back from a break, I had to remember how to make chiptune music and that meant that I started to experiment with sounds in a way that I hadn’t done before when I was in a production routine. It took a few videos, but I think the music production on the series improved substantially during this run of videos and reached something great in A-Bit of Undertale.Lastly, The Beatles (and Queen) have long been my favourite bands, so that’s why I did this cover and included so many songs in the medley.---It’s been 10 years! In fact, I didn’t return for almost 3 years. I set out to make 50 videos and stopped one video short… why? After exactly a year of making A-Bit of 8-Bit, I had burned out. I thought I could make a living from my music if I just tried hard enough, and it hadn’t happened - not even close. The amount of time I had to invest in order to make videos on a weekly basis meant that my life consisted of day job, YouTube or sleep. I had little to no time for being social or hobbies. I’m not saying that you can’t make money from content – clearly, you can – but I didn’t figure out the magic formula…Anyways, the three years away turned out to be vital for me and were some of the best years of my life – so clearly there was an important lesson for me to learn... As an aside for anybody reading this, I know these “Behind the Bits” are self-reflective – almost like I’m writing a diary – and I am rarely mentioning the fact that thousands of other people were enjoying the videos and have their own stories and relationships with them. So I just want to say that you are not lost on me. I appreciate all the support that I’ve had throughout the years and have had many genuinely sweet and touching experiences because of the videos, both online and IRL. I very rarely listen to it these days, but the debt that I owe it is immense! My parents exposed me to Queen from a very young age, so they have been a personal favourite of mine for as long as I can remember. Bohemian Rhapsody is everything Queen represents in one song: beautiful vocals, stylistic range, virtuosic guitar, and just raw POWER. I was very confident in this video when I posted it, but now I feel that the introductory sections are not as interesting as the operatic sections, so people may get bored before they get to the best part. When I was 8 my dad bought Mortal Kombat to play with my uncle. I was not allowed to watch let alone play it! When they played it, I had to go to my room, but I remember sneaking out and spying through a gap between the couch and the wall and thinking it was super cool. A-Bit of Pokemon (Chip Clip) Joe Jeremiah 2023-10-18 | Behind the Bits 32(A-Bit of Pokemon was posted to YouTube on Jan 2, 2014)Pokemon is the first anime I ever remember seeing. I was on a family holiday to New Zealand at the age of 7 when I saw one episode and was instantaneously obsessed. After that I was watching the show, buying cards and drawing my own Pokemon. I remember being hustled by a kid who was a grade above me – I traded my best card for a common card… I remember putting my cards in my pocket where I had also placed chewing gum – I was never able to fully get the gum off my cards… I remember crying when a teacher confiscated my cards (they were banned at school). But for all my obsessiveness, I never owned a Gameboy. Despite this, I would take every opportunity I could to hang with friends who did. Good times hahaTruth be told, this isn’t my favourite video (I did Pokemon much better in A-Bit of Anime) and it is perhaps the start of a string of TV theme song videos that are not my most inspired…---It’s been 10 years!
