MIT unveils IBM 704 computer at ribbon cutting - the first on campus computer ever!

IBM Research 2024-06-09 | On this day in 1957, MIT unveiled a dedicated research center housing a $2.7 million IBM 704 computer, weighing in at nearly 20,000 lbs. Donated by IBM as a contribution to advance research and education in the nascent field of computer science, the installation of the IBM 704 marked an important moment in computer history. The 704 was MIT’s first public computer and the largest computer installed in any academic institution at the time.

Since 1957, IBM and MIT have continued to collaborate to advance scientific R&D. In 2017, this partnership led to the creation of the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Bringing together scientists from MIT and IBM Research, the lab focuses on groundbreaking AI research and its application to real-world challenges.

What you can only see under a scanning electron microscope

IBM Research 2024-05-30 | Have you ever wondered what a blade of grass looks like up close? Or did you know that there’s actually a statue of Abraham Lincoln on the U.S. penny? With scanning electron microscopes (SEMs), you see down to this minute level. Come explore our lab at IBM Research where we use SEMs so accurate that they use beams of electrons to create images of objects 50,000 times smaller than what we can see with our eyes. We use these machines for inspecting tiny imperfections on designs of microchips we’re creating for the future of semiconductors. Tag along as John Ott, a materials researcher at IBM who manages our SEMs at our Yorktown research center, tours one of the labs — and shows us that tiny Lincoln.

Introducing Qiskit SDK v1.0

IBM Research 2024-05-15 | Qiskit 1.0 marks the start of a new chapter in the history of quantum programming — one centered on performance, stability, and usability. Qiskit SDK is an open-source software development kit for quantum computing originally launched in 2017. Seven years later, Qiskit has reached a significant milestone with the release of Qiskit SDK v1.0, its first major version. Qiskit 1.0 greatly simplifies the process of building and transpiling quantum circuits at the utility scale, a realm of computational problem solving beyond even the most powerful brute force classical methods. Holograms were created on this day in history

IBM Research 2024-03-24 | Months before the first episode of Star Trek aired, IBM researchers were showing off something that must have felt like science fiction at the time. On this day in 1967, IBM unveiled a new method for creating holograms with digital computers for the first time. A team in Texas used an IBM System/360 Model 50 computer to calculate the interference patterns that would be created if light waves were actually reflected from a real object. The creation of holograms numerically by a computer opened the possibility of obtaining 3D pictures of objects that exist only in concept, rather than in physical reality. The new technique greatly extended the usefulness of holography in engineering and scientific applications. And now, computer-generated 3D objects can be found everywhere, from video games to virtual reality.

IBM System/360 pioneers awarded the National Medal of Science

IBM Research 2024-02-19 | On this day in 1985, US President Ronald Reagan bestowed the first National Medal of Technology and Innovation upon three IBMers: Fred Brooks, Erich Bloch and Bob O. Evans. The award has since become the preeminent recognition in the country for significant contributions to society through technology. All three IBMers won the medal for their work on the development of the IBM System/360, which revolutionized the data processing for the IT industry.

The System/360 was the first family of computers designed with both commercial and scientific use cases in mind, allowing customers to expand their systems as their needs grew — which was a first in the industry at the time. Mainframe systems have come to underpin much of the modern economy, securely managing transactions for the world’s largest banks, bookings for the world’s biggest airlines, and data for just about every industry.

IBM’s research and development into mainframe systems has continued to this day, up through IBM z16, the latest iteration of the IBM Z platform that brought industry leading AI inferencing and cyber-resiliency to the hybrid cloud. None of that would’ve been possible without the earliest pioneers on System/360.

IBM computer guides NASAs Saturn rocket into space

IBM Research 2024-01-29 | On this day in 1964, an IBM computer was used aboard an historically significant testing flight of NASA’s Saturn rocket. The flight successfully placed a record-breaking 19-ton payload into orbit around the earth. The IBM computer, used for guidance, was an integral part of the Instrument Unit (IU) section of the Saturn, and helped ensure the test mission went as expected. Information about the mission’s performance was telemetered in real time back to Earth, from the IU. Just over five years later, NASA used the Saturn system to send the first humans to the surface of the Moon.

Driving Performance for the Tools of Utility

IBM Research 2023-12-05 | As we find more problems to explore at utility-scale, we must also evolve our products and services to support utility-scale workloads. In other words, we need to define the necessary Tools for Utility. These start with foundational properties like availability, reliability, and stability that co-exist with the performance metrics of scale, quality, and speed. We need execution modes that support long-running jobs and threaded primitives to take advantage of system parallelism. We need middleware tools to bring together quantum and classical infrastructure. And we need Primitives with increasingly sophisticated error mitigation technologies. In this session we will share several product announcements toward delivering the Tools of Utility.

Quantum Utility: IBM Quantum and UC Berkeley experiment charts path to useful quantum computing
