Daniel ArnauldIn this video I begin re-reading and making notes and sketches for the two parts of the Zertelo Expansion Project: Audio Book and Graphic Novel.
I originally planned to write seven books in the Zertelo series. So far there are only three published books, yet I am committing to pick the series back up and begin work again.
To write book four, I needed to re-read the series. This gave me the idea to do an audio book for Zertelo and the Quest for CastleOak. It was also suggested that I create a graphic novel as well.

Beginning a project can feel overwhelming. You can start by taking a few simple steps outlined quickly in this behind-the-scenes artist journal. D.S. Arnauld is both the writer of the original chapter book and the artist for the graphic novel A Troll Under the Bridge.
Video Transcription:
To simplify the design of my characters, I started with their profile.
The actor Geoffrey Rush begins building a character by creating a silhouette through costume and posture. I took that as a starting point, and a distinct silhouette is a good foundation in graphic design because it helps with immediate figure-ground separation.
I also wanted to establish the scale of the troll and the human girl. She is roughly half his height.
I made them out of geometric shapes, again for simplicity. I didn’t want to get bogged down into fashion, or anatomy or even color theory or texture at this early stage. With time, I have made decisions on all of these design elements. But in the early stage, I wanted to stay zoomed out.
Another simple but fun cue connecting these two unlikely friends is that Abby’s ponytail is the same shape and size as Bart’s tusk. Although that’s a small design link, it means a lot to me as the creator who is expressing a relationship through a visual medium.
A note on how I use Photoshop: I think the greatest strength of this program is layers. I try to put every element on a separate layer. I’ll go into my philosophy of Photoshop more in future videos. To be clear on my intent. I don’t want to teach you to use Photoshop but rather to think in terms of graphic design, visual perception, and visual storytelling. Ideally these concepts can transfer to whatever program or tool you are using. It’s more important that you understand why than it is to know how an artist uses a tool.
To conclude I begin a character design by coming up with a distinct silhouette in profile. I used simple shapes to quickly establish their proportions and scale.
Thanks for watching this entry in my artistic journal for the creation of the graphic novel A troll under the Bridge.Behind the Scenes Audiobook The Dinosaur in My Backyard read by D. S. ArnauldDaniel Arnauld2024-05-14 | #audiobook #behindthescenes #acting

Author D.S. Arnauld faces the acting challenge of performing two different villainous animal characters in a children’s book. An evil bat must convince a rat to join the dark army. This video educates authors/actors on the iterative process of performing an audiobook in a recording studio.
The key to differentiating voices is to create distinct combinations of vocal placement, breath, and articulation.
The bat’s voice starts as a breath in the chest and is over-articulated in the front of the mouth.
The rat’s voice is pinched between the top of the throat through the glottal and released through the nose.
Once the location of the voice is found, a performer can switch between characters, and the audience can distinguish who is speaking.

Transcript:
How do you select the best image? After a photo session comes to task of selecting the finest images.
This is the technique of the Squint Test. Once you import your images, you can bring them up as rows of thumbnails and look at them quickly to judge which are worth retouching in post processing. This will save you time and help you to capture better images during your next photography session. Image selection and shooting are reciprocal skills. The more you are aware of the criteria for a useable portrait, the better you will set yourself up for success when shooting. You’ll know what works and what doesn’t and why.
A squint test, here a Gaussian blur, reduces the composition to its simplest visual pattern. This removes details that can be fixed in retouching and the squint test shows how the elements like human subject and location details relate to the overall image shape.
A thumbnail sketch, like the squint test, allows an artist to visualize a composition, quickly, for preliminary decisions. Not getting bogged down by detail allows you to focus on the largest relationships, subject placement in the frame, subject relation to the negative space, major shapes, major colors. Strive to workout the major compositional relationships ahead of any labor intensive work.
As I glance through the smaller images I have certain negative factors that can eliminate or cull the bad images and positive factors that signal it might be a good portrait.
Some quick criteria I am looking at are: -Chopped off or hidden limbs -Location of where the head is placed in the frame -A feeling that the subject is balanced with the negative space. -Facial expression is dignified
Chopping, eliminating any image where the frame chops off the human figure in an unpleasant way or a limb is hidden behind the body. Viewers interpret cropping at the ankle and wrist as chopping off the hands and feet. Also avoid cropping at joints such as knees and elbows. This is an excepted convention and if you break it, it distracts from your portrait.
Framing: Look at where the subject is placed in the frame so the relationship to the image border and the background is balanced. Before you zoom in and look for details, look at the thumbnail and how much space there is between the subject’s head and the image border. You are arranging the subject within a boundary, the primary decision is where you place the head. Placing the head on the central vertical axis is fine but it doesn’t activate the space or counterbalance details in the location. This is why novices are taught the rule of thirds and some photographers go on to use harmonic armatures. The problem is if you you place the head too close to the image border and it feels crowded, but a benefit is tight framing can also feel spontaneous. This is your artistic decision. You can crop however you want to show subjects as close or far away. The one convention most viewers agree on is not cropping at the ankles or wrist.
3. Balanced Space: If you squint then you see the space around the subject and think of it as a shape. The space around the figure and between the image border is now negative space. Does the shape have enough breathing room between the image border? This third criteria asks does the interval of space feel balanced? Is the the subject striving to be in a different location? Does the spatial arrangement of the frame convey the feeling you want it to convey? Ultimately it is your sensitivity that leads to the artistic decision of how much space is enough to feel balanced and unified.
4. Once you eliminate the poorly cropped images, and select the well framed images, and have spatial balance then you can go back and look at facial expression, is the subject presenting a conscious emotion? Are they authentic? and dignified? Sometimes we capture expression that is between emotions and the person looks confused or worried, or blank. That is why they must be presenting and aware in a portrait.
SUMMARY:
Because thumbnail sketches are small they contain less details, allowing you to focus on the largest relationships. You can also think of these as CRITERIA FOR USEABLE PORTRAITS, both in editing and in shooting.
Cropping: No Cropping that looks like amputation of hands and feet. Framing: The subject is placed in the Image Border so that the relationship to the frame depicts size and scale. Balanced Space: The area of negative space between the subject’s head and the image border achieves the feeling you want to convey. The subject and background and border are balanced. Facial expression: Face and body are dignified, and the subject is presenting a conscious emotion. You are careful not to catch them between expressions.Expressive Movement - Short Visual Tutorial #actionpainting #dance #artDaniel Arnauld2022-05-31 | Jane is a dancer and she will help us to understand about expressive movement. I showed her a clip of Jackson Pollack painting and told her to move as he did, concentrating on how the paint made a design on the ground.
Action painting leaves a mark or stroke that traces the physical move of the artist’s body. The kinetic line of color results from the kinetic body movement. The drip painting is not random because all movement obeys a law.
Next I instructed Jane to dance and just dance, disregarding how her movements affected the painting below her. You can see the difference in both her movement and the art below her. The difference between a dance-like motion and a dance itself.
Movement is part of our visual language, a part as important as depth or color or light.
In terms of the mechanics of human perception movement is displacement against a frame of reference. But in terms of expression what does her dance mean? I can watch and interpret it. I can admire her grace and artistic choices. I can feel emotion, empathy. Maybe deep in my nerves there is even kinetic empathy. This is where the expression of movement in dance meets the brush stroke of action painting. Something kinetic and amazing took place. It fills us with energy. It is expression and it is open to interpretation.Cover Announcement for Mustache Magazine #funny #comedy #photographyDaniel Arnauld2022-05-22 | Daniel Arnauld and Maya Koch share exciting news about their photography collaborations. In exchange for the studio’s control, we gain the detail and serendipity of the living environment. The street is dynamic. The colors and textures make for a record of the time and place in which the subject lives. Street portraits are about interaction and exploring.
Yet why are so many portraits taken outside poorly composed and full of distracting clutter? The answer to better pictures might be in a description made by a Roman architect who lived two thousand years ago. Vitruvius wrote that a man with arms and legs stretched out could give the dimensions for both a circle and a square. The profound meaning behind this simple statement will inform much of the advice given throughout this book, with a special section on Vitruvius in Part 3.
Parts 1 & 2 are the ‘How’ and Part 3 is the ‘Why.’ I considered starting with the ‘Why’ first, but decided to jump in with useful tips that you can start applying right away.
The lovely woman featured in the illustrations is Maya Koch, a model/actress in Dallas, Texas. Her black outfits are deliberately chosen so as to not distract from the photography concepts.
The way you depict the world in your photographs matters. Your representation of scale is your statement about man’s pace in the world. Your inclusion of artistic design uplifts the soul of the viewer. Your scale and design together confer dignity on the subject.
