Album: The Feast of Fools
Video: a selection of many images about donkeys from varius manuscripts from XIIth to XVth cent.

โข
The feast of the fools, also called the feast of the ass, was destined to honor the donkey that carried Jesus during his entry into Jerusalem. In these holidays, celebrated after Christmas, the altar boys and priests reversed their roles while conducting the rites. The practice was particularly widespread in Notre Dame in Paris and in many European churches; in Italy similar cases are witnessed as in a famous missal of 1200 from the cathedral of Padua. The basic scheme of this particular event was always the same: during vespers, when the verse in which God overthrows the powerful from their thrones and raises the humble was read, a great din exploded from the choir, obviously prepared. The minor orders and the altar boys then chased the priests from their chairs and took their place, while a young cleric flanked the bishop during the rest of the rite assuming the role of pope of fools, bishop of fools or abbot of fools. At the end of the service he received the same honors as the real prelate, and his chaplain was to pronounce a blessing that comprehend: liver disease, a banquet of forgiveness, twenty banquets of toothache and two ringworms under the chin.Young people caught in bed on the day of the Innocents (December 28) received slaps on the back. In various cities the canons, clergymen and sometimes seculars were caught in their bed in the morning and, in a state of complete nakedness, led through the streets, into churches and onto the altar where they were mocked. Even the clergymen actively participated with jokes during the day of the Innocents walking naked through the city or exhibiting men, naked, in the theaters. Biblical scenes were represented in these periods of the year and with the passage of time these theatrical performances reached a point where some saints were even attributed a fixed characteristic; St. Peter was the most funny, St. Thomas was the incredulous and so on. The years passed and the holidays became more and more extreme and profane. Although their initial peaceful acceptance was testified by their inclusion in liturgical missals, in the following centuries these feasts and theatrical performances were limited and in 31 December 1519 the feast was gradually banned by the religious and civil authorities. From the ancient Roman saturnalia to the feasts of medieval fools and, if we consider that the first to use the term "carnival" was the jester Matazone da Caligano at the end of the 13th century, we could assume that reminiscences of these feasts are up to us. A need for madness, for evasion from the so-called normality, which by changing and adapting has managed to overcome Time and law.
I wish you happy listening!

As written on the official York Waits website: "The disc takes its name from a riotous Christmas celebration that took place in York before it was banned by a Puritan Archbishop in the 1570s. The recording begins dramatically with the ancient Yoole-girthol proclamation which welcomed "beggars, whores, thieves and dice players" to the city during the Twelve Days of Yule."
This is the last video about Christmas for this year! But don't worry, in the next few days there will be a new upload about the medieval music for the end of year!

Grayston Burgess was born in Kent in 1932. He was one of the great pioneers of early music research. During the Second World War he was a chorister in the choir at Canterbury Cathedral. With the end of the war he began attending Cheltenham College, won a scholarship and began singing in the choir of King's College, Cambridge. In 1963 he formed the Purcell Consort of Voices. He sang with Thomas Binkley's "Studio der frรผhen Musik" and with Michael Morrow and John Beckett's "Musica Reservata" ensemble.
"Now Make We Merthe" is a 1964 album about English carols and early Christmas music.

Album: A Medieval Christmas
Video: Book of Hours, Use of Rome (the 'Golf Book' c 1540)
http://www.facebook.com/musicamedievale
โข
This is the second Christmas themed video of this 2022. Christmas celebrations were very heartfelt in the so-called Middle Ages, most of the traditions still present in our western society were born right in the medieval centuries, it's no wonder then that there are enough songs on the theme of the nativity of Christ.
The concept of Christmas was born around the 5th century AD. by Pope Leo I with the intention of replacing the pagan rites of the Saturnalia, celebrations dedicated to Saturn and to Nature falling asleep during Winter; and of Sol Invictus or the Invincible Sun, which was reborn at the end of the Winter Solstice, on December 25, a period in which the days begin to lengthen in the planet's northern hemisphere, thus confirming the Sun's reaffirmation over the world.
Leo I in his Christmas sermons states that the "True Sun" is Christ, which is why December 25th becomes the day in which his birth is celebrated which illuminates the world after the long period of darkness.
Leo I in the fifth century enriches the symbolic imagery of the nativity that is still part of our society today: the ox and the donkey in the stall would represent the pagans and the Jewish people respectively. Subsequently, in the seventh century, the stable present in the Gospels of Luke and Matthew was replaced by the freezing cave present in the Proto-Gospel of James, and this cave is associated with a symbolic prediction of the hardness of life that Jesus will have to face.
All these elements, in the twelfth century, will be taken by St. Francis to represent the birth of Jesus to the people through the nativity scene of Greccio.
The music presented here is born from the collaboration of two ensembles: Pro Cantione Antiqua & Mediaeval Wind Ensemble.
The first pressing of this album dates back to 1986, the pieces performed go from the 12th to the 15th century and almost all concern the theme of the nativity (Mark Brown, artistic director, has also decided to include some instrumental dances that are well suited to the holidays). For the video instead I have selected some winter and Christmas images from the beautiful "Golf Book" of 1540.
I wish you good listening.

December has started, as I said before for this month I will only release music about the Christmas festivities, obviously very popular in the Middle Ages.
Most of the traditions still present in our western society were born right in the medieval centuries, it's no wonder then that there are enough songs on the theme of the nativity of Christ.
This is the first video: "Thys Yool - A Medieval Christmas by Martin Best Mediaeval Ensemble".
Martin Best, born in 1942, has been dealing with early music since the 1970s. I refer to his Wikipedia page for those wishing to learn more: cutt.ly/Y1ZHKR9.
In his productions he always maintains a very folk approach, in this album music and lyrics about Christmas from various European territories are interpreted.
I wish you a good listening.

Album: John Dunstable, Cathedral Sounds - Sacred music of the late English Gothic
Video: A selection of images of English Cathedrals
http://www.facebook.com/musicamedievale
โข
John Dunstable, "an astrologian, a mathematician, a musician and what not", was born around 1390 in England and died on 24th December 1453 in London. "On the eve of Christ's birth this star rose up into Heaven". This is about all that is know of Dunstable, one of the very great, one of the most important western composers. The religious polyphony if the late Gothic period must number among the most significant demostrations of the human mind. Its resounding "cathedrals" of sound bear very comparison with architectural achievements, with the Egiptyan pyramids and the Greek temples. Maybe this will again generally acknowledged some day. It is the music of the stars proportionated by cosmic laws. Many musicians and musicologists of that era were also mathematicians and astronomers just as Dunstable. Without Dunstable, and the contemporary English school of "contenange angloise" wich he wholly embodies, one cannot imagine the later existence of so-called Dutch of Franco-Flemish polyphony, the basis of our classical polyphony. The significance of this English musical style was recognised on the continent as early as the 1440's. Its most important characteristics are full, harmonic richness of sound and cantabile melody. These are phenomena which point to a new era, away from the more horizontal lines of the Middle Ages. Vertical sound blocks were considered the necessary product of polyphonic strands rather than autonomous sound phenomena in their own right. The English style, as also found in selected folk-music traditions, seems to have traditionally diverged somewhat. Dunstable's extraordinary skill was so convincing that the continental polyphonist merged the peculiarities of the "contenance angloise" with their own style. The music strives towards panconsonant polyphony, dissonance (other than simple melodic ornament) is generally introduced with care. [...]
Renรฉ Clemencic.
Here is an excerpt from the libretto of this wonderful work by Clemencic dedicated to Dunstable. Regarding the video, I have selected some images of beautiful cathedrals in Great Britain.
Have a good listening!

Today would have been the birthday of Anne-Marie Deschamps (23-10-1933 / 15-09-2022) unfortunately recently passed away. She was interpreter of medieval music, singer, musicologist, pedagogue and French composer. In 1974 she founded the Venance Fortunat ensemble, the first French a cappella vocal group specializing in medieval music. The sung repertoire of the ensemble is mainly that of sacred music, with a particular focus on a few manuscripts that are little or not studied: the Codex Calixtinus, the Codex Ivrea, the Codex of Apt, the Graduel de Bellelay. The Codex Calixtinus, Liber Sancti Jacobi or the Book of Saint James, is an important manuscript from the 12th-century. It was intended to be an in-depth anthology with advice for pilgrims following the Camino de Santiago to the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great, located in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, Galicia (Spain). The collection includes sermons, reports of miracles and liturgical texts associated with Saint James, and a set of polyphonic musical pieces. In it are also found descriptions of the route, works of art to be seen along the way, and the customs of the local people.

Here is another great work by Thomas Binkley and his Studio der Fruhen Musik, this time on the early music of Spain, Portugal and Basque Country.
Yes, I know that only volume I is about medieval music, but I think that sacrificing this wonderful work just for a matter of dates is a real offense to this album and to our intelligence.
I'm sure you'll agree with me, especially after listening.
I wish you good listening.

Those who follow this channel know how much I love minimalism in the interpretation of medieval music. In this extraordinary work by Leah Stuttard, one of the most talented harpists of our time, we can hear some 15th century English music. Leah Stuttard in this wonderful solo album plays the gothic harp and sings.
Have a good listening!

"A lentrade del tens clar", often "modernized" in "A l'entrada del temps clar", is an ancient French ballade and is one of the most famous and beautiful musical themes that survived the time and came down to us directly from the twelfth century. The May Day Celebrations, (Calendimaggio) were among one of the most celebrated popular holidays in the European Middle Ages.
Ancient pre-Christian reminiscences linked to the cult of Nature and the harvest, which are necessary to be able to survive more than anything else.
In this minimal and rustic performance, no arrangement is taken into account that could make the melody that has come down to us more captivating. Each note is played exactly as it was written, each word sticks to the original text and you can see it yourself reading through the manuscript in the video. The idea is to evoke the suggestive, rural, festive and folk impressions present in the lyrics of this "Ballata".The text is shown below both original and translated into English, have a good listening.
English:
At the beginning of the bright season, indeed
In order to be joyous again, indeed
And to annoy the jealous, indeed
The queen wants to show
That she is so amorous.
Hit the road, hit the road, you jealous!
Let us, let us
Dance among us, among us.
She has had it announced everywhere, indeed
That, as far as the sea, indeed
There shan't be maiden nor young man, indeed
Who shan't all come to dance
In the joyous dance.
Hit the road, hit the road, you jealous!
Let us, let us
Dance among us, among us.
The king comes, indeed
To disturb the dance, indeed
For he is in turmoil, indeed
That someone would want to steal
The April Queen.
Hit the road, hit the road, you jealous!
Let us, let us
Dance among us, among us.
But his toil is in vain, indeed
For she doesn't care for an old man, indeed
But for blithe young one, indeed
Who would well know how to please
The savoury lady.
Hit the road, hit the road, you jealous!
Let us, let us
Dance among us, among us.
Whoever would see her dance, indeed
And her move her pretty body, indeed
Could well say, by his troth, indeed
That she has no match in this world
The joyous queen.
Hit the road, hit the road, you jealous!
Let us, let us
Dance among us, among us.

I made this instructional video by associating to the music played by David Munrow and his "Early Music Consort of London" the photographs of the instruments used. Munrow's work includes a second disc on Renaissance melodies and instruments, in this video you can listen and watch the instruments and melodies of the first CD concerning the Middle Ages. I strongly advise you to buy the work because it is available at a very low price despite being beautiful and essential for lovers of ancient music.

A musical journey that leads to the discovery of early Italian vernacular poetry. Drawing on medieval manuscript sources and on popular folk musical modes from the 12th century to our days, the Murmur Mori ensemble set these fundamental lyrics to music in order to reconstruct the sonorous atmosphere and to spread the history of the first Italian vernacular poetesses, poets and music performers.

Album: I Have Set My Hert So Hy, Love & Devotion in Medieval England
Video: Ms. Douce 38, XIVth century
http://www.facebook.com/musicamedievale

During the 14th and 15th centuries England witnessed an explosion of written poetic output in the vernacular, the lyrics of which were intimately bound to music. Sadly, only a handful of poems have survived 'intact'; in the spirit of reconstruction, The Dufay Collective join forces with Voice to perform extant songs and instrumental adaptations as well as poetry set to adapted/original melodies by director William Lyons, also including a selection of rare surviving instrumental dances.
I don't know what the climate of your summer is like, but here in the Alps the clouds break on the tall trees of the mountains, it often rains and it is really cool and I, who love this climate that reminds me so much of that of Albion, can only listen to this beautiful record.
Have a good listening!

Those who follow this channel already know how much I adore minimal arrangements, and shy away from pompous orchestrations in medieval music. This record, entirely played, produced and made by the phenomenal Danish musician Poul Hรธxbro, is one of my favorites of my collection.
It was released in 1999, but I have a wonderful version included in a 4-disc box set made with singer Agnethe Christensen, who together with Poul Hรธxbro give life to the "Ensemble Alba". This is the first disc of the collection: entirely instrumental, it contains some of the most famous melodies of the European Middle Ages. Soon I will share the others cds with you too, where the voice of Agnethe Christensen will also be present.
Have a good listening.

This is part of a beautiful compendium dedicated to secular songs of the Middle Ages. These two CDs are dedicated to the music of the Crusades. The fantastic Modo Antiquo and Bettina Hoffman give us a truly minimal, sophisticated, credible and interesting interpretation. Obviously I have all the CDs in this collection and I will soon share all the records with you. I personally believe that this collection of Modo Antiquo and Bettina Hoffman box set is an extraordinary gem to have for all the lovers of historically informed medieval music.

Album: Ecco la Primavera, Florentine music from the 14th century

Another wonderful piece of art by David Munrow and his Early Music Consort of London. This time it is a compendium of many Italian songs of the fourteenth century. Yes, as the names of the composers suggest, the repertoire is Italian, not just Florentine. This album is from 1969, I prefer the way that ancient music was interpreted in those years, I think it is more credible, wild and accurate than the interpretations of these days.

In Western classical music, a motet is mainly a vocal musical composition, of highly diverse form and style, from high medieval music to the present. The motet was one of the pre-eminent polyphonic forms of Renaissance music. The late 13th-century theorist Johannes de Grocheo believed that the motet was "not to be celebrated in the presence of common people, because they do not notice its subtlety, nor are they delighted in hearing it, but in the presence of the educated and of those who are seeking out subtleties in the arts". In the early 20th century, it was generally believed the name came from the Latin movere (to move), though a derivation from the French mot ("word", or "phrase") had also been suggested. The Medieval Latin for "motet" is motectum, and the Italian mottetto was also used. If the word is from Latin, the name describes the movement of the different voices against one another. Today, however, the French etymology is favoured by reference books, as the word "motet" in 13th-century French had the sense of "little word". In fact, the troped clausulas that were the forerunner of the motet were originally called motelli (from the French mot, "word"), soon replaced by the term moteti. The earliest motets arose in the 13th century from the organum tradition exemplified in the Notre-Dame school of Lรฉonin and Pรฉrotin. The motet probably arose from clausula sections in a longer sequence of organum. Clausulae represent brief sections of longer polyphonic settings of chant with a note-against-note texture. In some cases, these sections were composed independently and "substituted" for existing setting. These clausulae could then be "troped," or given new text in the upper part(s), creating motets. From these first motets arose a medieval tradition of secular motets. These were two- to four-part compositions in which different texts, sometimes in different vernacular languages, were sung simultaneously over a (usually Latin-texted) cantus firmus usually adapted from a passage of Gregorian chant. Later the cantus firmus was instead played on an instrument, marked in the score with a word "mot" to indicate its origin. It is also increasingly argued that the term "motet" could in fact include certain brief single-voice songs. The texts of upper voices include subjects as diverse as courtly love odes, pastoral encounters with shepherdesses, political attacks, and many Christian devotions, especially to the Virgin Mary. Most medieval motets are anonymous compositions and significantly re-use music and text. They are transmitted in a number of contexts, and were most popular in northern France. The largest surviving collection is in the Montpellier Codex. Increasingly in the 14th and 15th centuries, motets made use of repetitive patterns often termed panisorhythmic; that is, they employed repeated rhythmic patterns in all voicesโnot only the cantus firmusโwhich did not necessarily coincide with repeating melodic patterns. Philippe de Vitry was one of the earliest composers to use this technique, and his work evidently had an influence on that of Guillaume de Machaut, one of the most famous named composers of late medieval motets (Wikipedia).

The great figure of Saint Ambrose dominates the so-called โAmbrosianโ plainsong, the tradition of which has been perpetuated since the beginning of the 5th century at Milan and in some of the valleys of the Italian Alps and Southern Switzerland. An administrator, poet and orator, the future saint was the son of a high-ranking official of the Roman Empire, and was called to the see of Milan by the acclamations of the people even before he had been baptized. Milan, where he thus became Bishop, was the administrative capital of the western territories of the Empire. An important commercial centre, the city was the confluence of numerous cultural currents, bringing together men of Roman stock, Italians, Greeks and Barbarians. Ambrose succeeded a certain Auxentius, a Greek who preached Arianism, a heresy of Eastern origin. On the other hand, Ambrose, in his defence of orthodoxy, drew his inspiration from the works of the fathers of the Eastern Church, most notably those of Origen and Saint Basil. A gifted poet, the new Bishop composed numerous hymns, some of which are still in use today. Saint Augustine, who stayed with him in Milan, gives us a very precise account of one of the earliest known manifestations of Christian ecclestastic singing. At the height of the Arian dispute the Empress-Regent Justina, an adherent of the heresy, sent troops to invest some of the basilicas of the city. Ambrose opposed this order and had the threatened churches occupated by crowds of the faithful. โIt was on this occasion,โ Augustine relates, โthat they began to sing hymns and psalms in the manner of the Eastern regions, in order to prevent the people from giving way to dejection and boredomโ. Saint Augustineโs testimony is extremely valuable. The author of the confessions was himself an excellent musician and would later have to attend to the liturgy and the singing in his own pastoral functions. He speaks with authority when he emphasizes that the use of this Eastern style of singing โwas maintainedโ once the crisis was over, and that it even spread โto the rest of the worldโ. A besieged Church, an anxious crowd composed of a mixture of nationalities and languages, antiphonally sung psalms โ these were the circumstances of one of the first manifestations of liturgical singing. We cannot be indifferent to the fact that it took place in the Eastern manner. The Milanese community was sometimes forced to put up quite a struggle to defend its rite and its way of singing against the attempts at unification by both Rome and the secular powers. At the beginning of the 9th century it was to be against Charlemagne and Pope Adrian I, and later against Nicholas and Gregory VII. At the time of the Council of Trent it required all the authority of Saint Charles Borromeo, a distant successor to Saint Ambrose, to protect a mode of singing to which the Milanese wished to remain faithful. To be sure, the Ambrosian and the Roman chants existed side by side over the centuries, and it is almost
certain that numerous elements of the first were incorporated into the second. We will find in the pieces chosen by the Ensemble Organum for this recording certain familiar melodic features which have been repeated until the present day in the most commonly used liturgies. At the same time it is no less obvious that the proximity of Rome and the standardization of plainsong notation in square notes have sometimes โvulgarizedโ Ambrosian singing, partly masking its specific qualities. During the working sessions at the Abbey of Royaumont, Marcel Pรฉrรฉs and his companions applied the manner of singing and the modes of the
Churches of Athens and of Antioch to a chant that usage had Romanized to an excessive extent, thereby restoring its original colour. Returning to the living sources, they have revived, โin the union of voices and heartsโ, the very gesture of the great Bishop of Milan. As he would have wished, they sing โthe hymns and the psalms in the manner of the East.โ The
result requires no justifying commentary: the beauty of it is its own conviction. From the booklet.

It's a shame, I was convinced that I had already shared with you this wonderful Studio Der Frรผhen Musik album directed by Thomas Binkley, one of my favorite records and instead I realized that I had not yet done so.
The disc is dedicated half to the Trouveres, poets and singers of Northern France and half to the Trobadours, poets and singers from a wider area that included Spain, southern France and northern Italy.
The interpretations are splendid, simple and very reliable from a historical point of view.
Sadly in these days the great tenor Nigel Rogers, historical collaborator of Binkley and also present in this recording, passed away.
This video is therefore dedicated to his memory, and knowing that his voice and his research have defeated even death is a decidedly consoling thought.

Album: A Handful of Pleasant Delites

A Handful of Pleasant Delites is a 1977 folk album by British musicians Philip Astle & Paul Williamson.
The disc was recorded inside the church of Whappenham, Northamptonshire, England and the chosen repertoire includes melodies and ballads ranging from the fourteenth to the nineteenth century.
I thought about the release of this album on my channel for several days, and if in the end I decided to share part of this work with you, it is not for the choice of the repertoire, but for its execution.
Astle and Williamson used a formidable instrumentation and the result is very credible from a historical point of view. The selection I made of the songs taken from their album excludes all the repertoire that goes beyond the sixteenth century. What has been included, even if it belongs to the years immediately following the fifteenth century, appears so historically informed and interesting that it would have been a shame to let it be forgotten. Inside the booklet there are even some quite serious errors, probably due to the lack of means and informations available to the two musicians; for example the famous melody of Italian origin "Trotto", contained in the London Manuscript, is described as a "lively English dance of the 14th century" ...
Anyway, the performance is so realistic, essential and convincing that it will be very easy to go beyond these details to enjoy a genuine and credible listening, free from any kind of pompous orchestral arrangement son of nineteenth-century classicism.
I firmly believe that, even if perhaps a little unconsciously, this folk record is truly an excellent jewel of ancient music.

The circle dances have a very ancient origin. In the Middle Ages the circle dance accompanied by singers was called Carol, from the old French "carole" in turn derived from the Latin "choraula". The themes of the songs could be both sacred and profane. These circle dances were very popular as dance music from the XIIth to XIVth centuries, after which their use expanded as processional chants sung at feasts, while others were written to accompany representations of Mystery Plays, the earliest representations formally developed in the Medieval Europe focused on the representation of biblical stories accompanied by songs and music.
This recording was made by the ensemble "The New York Pro Musica Antiqua" in 1953 and its focuses on English Christmas Carols.

This 2021 is the anniversary of the 800 years from the birth of Alfonso X El Sabio. To celebrate him, this year I'll share many versions of his Cantigas! This is the eighth and last video about it, you can easily find the others on the channel.
This version of the Cantigas is from the Clemencic Consort, one of my favorite ensembles for medieval music. As always, Clemencic's conducting prefers to approach historical accuracy with courageous and often not easily accessible choices for a not accustomed ear to medieval music. The musicians who accompany him in this first volume are among the best with whom Clemencic has worked over the years including Renรฉ Zosso on vocals and hurdy-gurdy and soprano Pilar Figueras.

Alfonso X was born in 1221, he was King of the Romans, of Castile and Leรณn. His father was Ferdinand III, a liberal man called "the Saint" and the "King of religions" as during his reign he managed to make Christians, Muslims and Jews coexist in peace. His mother was Elisabetta Hohenstaufen, nephew of Frederick Barbarossa. From the sources that speak of his life we โโknow that in his youth Alfonso was surrounded by numerous paramours and politically helped his father in many military campaigns, but it was his love for Art that made him immortal with the nickname "El Sabio". In 1254 Alfonso endowed with many privileges the school of Salamanca, founded by his grandfather, and thanks to Pope Alexander IV, he obtained permission to make the school an international university allowing its graduates to teach anywhere, except Paris and Bologna. Alfonso tried to bring together all the knowledge of his time in the language spoken by his subjects by founding the School of Translators of Toledo; the Muslim and Jewish sages of his court translated ancient Arabic and Hebrew works into Castilian. His scientific, historical and literary work was fundamental; promoted the drafting and publication of a series of authoritative texts in various fields of artistic and scientific culture such as the Alfonsine Tables: astronomical tables capable of providing the positions of the Sun, planets, stars and the dates of eclipses. He was also an excellent poet and even the author of one of the first treatises on chess. However, it was Music that handed it over to legend thanks to the collection of the famous Cantigas de Santa Maria, monophonic songs of the XIII cent. now preserved in Madrid and Florence, containing an enormous number of compositions and representations of musical instruments and players. The outset of these compositions can be traced back to the troubadour art, which were so successful as to induce Alfonso X to use both the language and the form. Marian devotion was particularly in vogue in this century, the collection sees the participation of aristocrats and courtiers, bourgeois, friars, clerics and jesters of humble origins, but protected in the courts. King Alfonso himself composed cรกntigas, some of which incite poets and jesters to dedicate their efforts and inspiration to the โSanta Damaโ. In addition to the Cantigas de Santa Maria, the Cantigas de Amigo, popular, melodious and melancholic, also spread in that period, showing some contact with the Mozarabic kharge in Arabic-Hebrew composed in the XI cent.. The work has great importance from a triple point of view: literary, musical and pictorial. Alfonso X inherited from his father Fernando III his musical chapel which brought together interpreters and composers of various cultures and who formed part of the alphonsine court, similar to his School of translators or scriptorium regio. He seems to be surrounded by them in some miniatures. The melodies are influenced by Gregorian monody, popular lyric and troubadour songs. The Codices of the Escorial Library are adorned and profuse with miniatures, fundamental for the reconstruction of 13th century musical instruments: flutes, hurdy-gurdy, psaltery, lute, vielle, cรญtara, guiterne, harp, castaรฑuelas, bagpipes, dulzaine...

This version of the Cantigas de Santa Maria comes from the great Sequentia ensemble, one of the most important medieval ensembles of these modern times. Their interpretation of the Cantigas is very refined, a feature that is present in all their works, but the total absence of percussions and their extremely vocal, abstract, dreamlike and spiritual approach does not completely agree with The E Codex which instead is full of illuminations depicting musical instruments including percussions, moreover, the influence of Mediterranean and Arab music was certainly present in the territories and in the cosmopolitan court of Alfonso X, but having said that, as I always repeat, no one can know for sure how the music sounded in the historical period called "Middle Ages", so every interpretation is to be taken into consideration and the one offered by Sequentia is certainly one of the most elegant.

Silke Gwendolyn Schulze is a musician who's specialized in woodwind. She has collaborated with many baroque and medieval music ensembles such as the Capella de Ministrers and La Morra. Recorder, pipe and tabor, duรงaine, double recorder, shawm and dulcian are some of the instruments that in her hands do not need any other support to create a pleasant, and possibly philological listening, that she may be of interest to both lovers of ancient music in general, and researchers and purists of the genre.
As far as music from the 10th to the 13th century is concerned, I personally prefer intimate and minimal arrangements over large orchestrations, both when it comes to sacred and profane repertoires. Those who think like me, then will find "The medieval Piper" a wonderful record, able to create ancestral atmospheres without ever boring or making you feel the lack of other elements.

Per quel che concerne la musica dal X al XIII secolo, io personalmente prediligo degli arrangiamenti intimi e minimali rispetto alle grandi orchestrazioni, sia quando si tratta di repertori sacri che profani. Chi la pensa come me, allora troverร "The medieval Piper" un disco stupendo, in grado di creare atmosfere ancestrali senza mai annoiare o far sentire la mancanza di altri elementi.

Album: Boethius: Songs of Consolation - Metra from 11th-century Canterbury
Video: Clm 15825, XIth cent. - MS Gg 5 35, XIth cent.

Imprisoned in Pavia in the early 520s, Boethius could not have anticipated that his final work would become one of the most widely read books of the Middle Ages. The Consolation of Philosophy portrays his struggle to reconcile himself to his fate by exploring the ways of man, the role of Fortune, and the major questions of good and evil. Evidence that the poems of the Consolation were sung in the early Middle Ages survives in the form of musical notation added to over thirty extant manuscripts dating from the ninth through to the beginning of the twelfth century. Through scholarly detective work, the members of Sequentia, together with a Cambridge eminence in the medieval melodic tradition linked to Boethiusโ work, Sam Barrett, have been able to produce a convincing reconstruction of this lost repertory. Barrett himself signs the main booklet essay and provides some fascinating insights therein.
from: http://sequentia.org
Evidence suggests that the laments in the sixth century work of Boethius were sung, and this is an attempt at reconstruction, with the help of scholar Sam Barrett. They are based primarily on a fragment from the Cambridge Songs (compiled c.1040), boosted by a rediscovered Canterbury source. The instrumental pieces are unrelated, "reconstructed from a contemporary Anglo-Saxon repertory from neaby Winchester."
The earlier Sequentia program based largely on the same Cambridge Songs source, and featuring previous attempts at reconstructing the Boethius melodies "Lost Songs of the Rhineland Harper" โคณ youtu.be/JMdeNgocNrk

The ensemble was born in 2015, from an idea by Mirko Volpe and Silvia Kuro, with the purpose of creating "new ancient music".
Taking inspiration from jester poetry of a popular nature, the project plunges its roots in the Middle Ages, when music was played for recreation, but was also a means of social criticism and had the fundamental role of knowledge propagator.
Among the woods of the Italian Alps grows Murmur Mori's folk music.

This recording dates back to 1966 and concerns secular music of the XIVth century. It was one of the first recordings, perhaps the first, to investigate and perform medieval music pieces that have come down to us, fundamental for early music's knowledge such as the Llivre Vermell de Montserrat and Le Jeu de Robin et Marion. It will be easy for you to notice how the performance choices presented for the first time to the public in this recording have subsequently remained almost unchanged over the years, despite the fact that they belong to a repertoire that has been extensively re-proposed by early music ensembles.
