Their technique, which uses nanoparticles to deliver genes into the chloroplasts of plant cells, works with many different plant species, including spinach, watercress and other vegetables. EmTech Asia 2019 - SMART wows crowd with cutting-edge innovations SMART Comms 2019-02-12 | https://smart.mit.edu/news-events/news?view=news&id=109As a partner of EmTech Asia, SMART showcased three Interdisciplinary Research Groups (IRGs) at EmTech Asia 2019 - the two-day conference that discussed how emerging technologies will influence industries related to artificial intelligence, robotics, sustainability, blockchain, bioengineering, social media, education, virtual reality, and 3D printing.Scientists and researchers from Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), Disruptive & Sustainable Technologies for Agricultural Precision (DiSTAP) and Future Urban Mobility (FM) wowed the 700-strong industry professionals with their cutting-edge research at the SMART booth. Themed "Research for Impact", all three IRGs impressed the delegates with their work that is poised for breakthroughs in the medical, urban farming and mobility landscapes. EmTech Asia was held on 22 and 23 January 2019 at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre.

Science, Technology & Policy 2018 (#STP2018), themed The Future of Work SMART Comms 2018-07-30 | The third Science, Technology & Policy workshop themed "The Future of Work"Wicked problems. Tough questions. And not-so-easy answers.These were what some 36 graduate students from six different entities had to address as they hit the ground running to come up with solutions for Singapore's challenges. In just a matter of five days, these students from MIT, ETH, TUM, SUTD, NTU and NUS, had to present their ideas on these five points:-AI-Robotics-Cybersecurity-Governance-EducationLectures from government and research experts; and tours of educational institutes and agencies provided fodder for their final presentations. Eric Protzer, an Economic Policy Research Assistant at MIT Industrial Performance Centre, said: "I think the best thing about going to a conference like this is that you get a plethora of different perspectives. You have Singaporeans representing an Asian policy background, the ETH folks from the European, and MIT from the North American background; and people from all sorts of academic disciplines, and the result is that you get this confluence of ideas that allow you to get a broader point of view, and consequently better ideas (to solve Singapore's challenges)."Organised by SMART, ETH, NUS, SUTD as well as TUM and NTU, this workshop (#STP2018) was held mainly at CREATE Tower from 16 - 20 July 2018.
Antimicrobial Resistance - why it matters SMART Comms 2018-06-21 | Did you know that existing drug-resistant pathogens and emerging pathogens with the potential to become drug resistant represent a threat to Singapore’s public health and national security. A significant 35-50% of bacterial infections in Singapore hospitals are now resistant to front-line antibiotics. Globally, continued growth of antimicrobial resistance is predicted to cause more deaths than cancer (10million annually) and cost the world up to S$130 trillion by 2050. The car was shown to drive autonomously between Fusionopolis (Galaxis building) and Biopolis (Nucleos building) on uncontrolled public roads. More progress is expected through continued testing in the area up through year 2016.
