This is the Porsche that was faster than F1, and smashed a 35-year-old Nurburgring lap record… I’ve spoken about it before, but this time I got an interview with the Technical Project Lead - to understand exactly HOW Porsche did it.
And it’s crazy stuff, it’s almost the real-life version of my “F1 with no rules” video from a few weeks ago. They took their already, extremely fast LMP1 car, and made it over 12 seconds faster at Spa -- that’s 11%, a huge amount in motorsport.

A Formula 1 car will do it in about two and a half seconds, the fastest production car - a Rimac Nevera - will do it in 1.7 seconds and my trusty old VW Passat will do it in about 8.
But a group of students from AMZ Racing based at the Swiss university, ETH Zurich, made a car accelerate faster than anything else in the world - and smashed through the previous record of 1.46 seconds.
What if there were no rules in F1? How fast could the cars go? What would the engineers change? And could the drivers actually survive?
F1 or motorsport with no rules, is something that engineers dream about, and the questions have been asked before.
But there must be SOME rules… there must be somewhere for the driver to sit, there must be four wheels, the laws of physics must be followed, and the car must be optimised for lap time around a Formula One circuit - like Silverstone or Spa.

This car goes from 0-62 miles per hour in 0.956 of a second. This is the classic acceleration test, one that we all grew up using to compare cars.
A Formula 1 car will do it in about two and a half seconds, the fastest production car - a Rimac Nevera - will do it in 1.7 seconds and my trusty old VW Passat will do it in about 8.

£14,000,000. That’s how much Project Inversion is going to cost. It’s a huge amount of money, and in this video, I’m going to share why it costs so much.

If you’re new to this series, we’re planning to drive a Formula car upside down - for 5 seconds - with aerodynamic force alone.
So, the main costs, as you can imagine, are the car, building the tunnel and hiring the location. And just the size of this project is astonishing. 1330 tonnes of temporary steelworks. 131 tonnes of temporary aluminium works. 49,000 metres squared of plywood - that’s the same as 7 football fields. And, all of that plywood has to be held together with something… almost half a million screws!

But the 499P, the new Ferrari Hypercar that was unveiled last year needed to NAIL those things. They had one goal, create a competitive Hypercar that could WIN at Le Mans - over 50 years since their last win in the top class.
So they had to create something that was reliable, kind on it’s tyres and could be fast over 24 hours.

Formula 1 drivers are the most skilled OVERTAKERS in the world - in a sport where ‘SENDING IT’ means out braking another car from 180 mph, down to under 60mph in around 80 metres, pulling up to 6G, and placing your car PERFECTLY to get past.
So, what SPECIFIC techniques do they use to overtake? And what do you do if the driver in front is defending as HARD as they can? Well, I’m going to break down EVERY overtaking technique these guys have in their locker.
First, there are a load of ways to overtake in Formula 1 - but we’re going to focus on wheel-to-wheel battling. You don’t need me to explain a DRS move on the straight, or an undercut in the pits (we like the exciting overtakes).
Now, overtaking in a corner - is simply carrying more speed INTO, THROUGH a corner or (most of the time) carrying more speed OUT of a corner.

I’m going too drive a formula car upside down in a tunnel, for 5 seconds through downforce alone!
We’ve designed the car, so our next mission was to find somewhere to complete this groundbreaking stunt. But, where on earth do you do that?
We thought ‘surely there’s a tunnel somewhere in the world that could be hired for this insane challenge?’ Well, this was WAY harder than we thought.
So, let me explain the surprising reason why we actually ended up designing a tunnel OF OUR OWN!
Now, my first port of call was to find someone who knew LOADS about tunnels. So this is Andy Willis.A senior project manager in civil engineering and he’s in charge of our tunnel for Project Inversion. I set him off with the job of finding the right tunnel a couple of years ago, and it was difficult to say the least - this is how we developed a bespoke tunnel in order to make this incredible challenge possible.

It’s fast, it’s a street track and the race starts at 10pm local time. But the biggest challenge for the teams is that at that time, it’s going to be cold… really cold.
So, why is the drastically colder than usual temperature such an issue? What are the teams and drivers going to do about it? And are we going to see an incredibly chaotic race?
Formula One cars really don’t work well at cold temperatures. Now, this is counterintuitive. You might notice that all of the fastest laps at your local kart track were set in the evening or at night. But in F1, the power units and in particular, the tyres just aren’t made to work when temperatures are below about 15 degrees celsius.
And you might ask, why? Well, the vast majority of the season is within a fairly tight temperature band, within the mid to high 20 degrees C range - and it has been for a while.

Now, hold on a second, I know that sounds absolutely ridiculous. BUT, yes - me and a team of engineers (and many other people) have been working on this project for a couple of years already - and we’ve found out that it’s all 100% possible. We have the car designs, the tunnel plans and all of the wind tunnel data to make it happen.

This is the most dominant engine in Formula 1 history - this thing has won 155 Grand Prix, 131 pole positions and even completed the triple crown - winning Monaco, the Indy 500 and Le Mans.
But, it’s not from one of the modern-day powerhouses like Mercedes, Ferrari or Honda. It’s a Ford! And a pretty special one - this engine changed the course of Formula 1.
But not because it’s got a special trick, or one really clever innovation - no, it’s because it had dozens of them. That’s down to the fact it was designed by one of the Greatest engine designers in history.

In 2014, Ferrari made a car that was UNDRIVEABLE. It’s been said a million times, that the F14T was the car that Understeered AND Oversteered at the same time!
So, I’ve been watching loads of onboards to figure out WHAT was wrong with it, and it brought about a strange realisation. Let me explain.
Look at this - it’s Alonso at Abu Dhabi and this car looks A HANDFUL. The car looks bad on traction, but then as he turns into the left - it understeers on the way in and then Fernando gets a LOAD of oversteer on the exit. And it’s a similar thing with the next corner.

Max Verstappen has a REALLY distinctive driving style, and it reminds me A LOT of how Michael Schumacher drove. So much so, that I’ve been comparing their onboards, and it’s been SUPER interesting.
Max Verstappen drives with a Schumacher style, but one that’s been adapted for the cars of now. Let me explain.
Schumacher drove with a distinctive style, he liked a lot of oversteer in his cars. Meaning he liked the balance of grip in the car to favour the front axle.
So he would like the aero balance, the weight distribution and rake of the car to all favour the front - giving him incredible front-end grip through the corners.
This meant he could rotate the car VERY quickly, pivoting it in the middle of the corner.

Formula 1 Tyre Blankets cost £22,000 PER CAR for an F1 weekend - that’s mental!
However, they are packed with INCREDIBLE technology that enables drivers to be quick, straight out of the pits.
So, how do these tyre blankets work? And what makes them cost SO MUCH?
But why do you need them?
It’s all about the rubber in the tyre compound, if you push too hard before the tyres are within the right temperature window, the surface of the tyre is too cold and brittle to generate grip.
So if you push on tyres that aren’t generating grip, you wear the surface rapidly - and can cause graining.
Which reduces the amount of rubber in contact with the track and ultimately the available grip.
So teams and drivers are very careful about how they bring tyres up to temperature.

Creating a kind of JET ENGINE that sat in the exhaust - meaning they created MORE POWER and DOMINATED rallying at the time.
