Grimoire Card images and text from http://destiny-grimoire.info/. Grimoire cards were removed from the app and Bungie.net so they don’t officially exist anywhere these days. Which is insane in itself. Thankfully this site archived them all.

Before that I played Mario Kart 7, Mario Kart DS, Mario Kart Double Dash, and Mario Kart 64.Mario Kart has played a similar role in most people’s lives. Which begs me to ask, what does Mario Kart do differently that it’s so ubiquitous even among non-gamers? Why is it that, after two decades, we’re all still playing Mario Kart?

First impressions count, and few first impressions count more than the first 15 minutes of a video game. It isn’t just a hook to draw you in; it’s the lens that frames the entire experience. This is the first 15 minutes of SOMA.

One of the most powerful things about the moving image is how it can drastically change our emotions without the help of the written or spoken word. And there are plenty of video games that use good visual storytelling and audio cues to stir emotion in the player. But we also have a third tool... A tool that gets too often overlooked when developers sit down with their writers to construct emotional scenes for their stories. I’m of course talking about a game’s mechanics, the gameplay, the actual “interactive” part of interactive media.Update 01 (Until Dawn & A Quick Thank You)Mason Miller2015-10-27 | Support [game array] on Patreon! patreon.com/gamearray Follow us on twitter! @gamearray
Just a quick thank you for the support! Oh, and I ramble on about Until Dawn for three or so minutes.
I have a confession to make. My most played game on steam isn’t Skyrim. It isn’t The Witcher 3. It’s not Fallout or Dragon Age Origins. It’s a little moba you may have heard of called Dota 2...
Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain will mean a lot of different things to different people. For some, it will be the technological powerhouse that, alongside The Witcher 3, welcomed in a new generation of video games. For others, it will be dozens of hours spent inside its world, building up mother base and increasing Big Boss’s arsenal. For others yet it will be the game that marks the end of an era, the last Metal Gear Solid made by Hideo Kojima and the last AAA production put out by Konami. I’ll remember it for two things: for its mechanical excellence and for the peculiar place it finds for itself within Metal Gear’s thirty year old canon.Amnesia: What You Cant See Can Still Scare You - [game array]Mason Miller2015-08-26 | Support [game array] on Patreon! patreon.com/gamearray Follow us on twitter! @gamearray
A lot goes into crafting a successful horror game—the setting, the lighting, the character design, and so on. But even more important than all that are the things we don’t see—the terrors we are forced to imagine. The Witcher 3 and Why Family Matters Mattered - [game array]Mason Miller2015-08-11 | Support [game array] on Patreon! patreon.com/gamearray Follow us on twitter! @gamearray

The first 15 minutes of a sequel have a lot riding on them. They have to please fans without alienating newcomers. They have to teach those who don’t know how to play without boring those who do. This is the first fifteen minutes of Dark Souls and Dark Souls II.The First Fifteen Minutes: Limbo - [game array]Mason Miller2015-06-01 | Support [game array] on Patreon! patreon.com/gamearray
The first fifteen minutes of a game are its foundation, its bedrock on which all that follows is built. It’s this foundation that determines the integrity of the entire game, whether it stands or falls. This is how the first fifteen minutes of Limbo work.
The first fifteen minutes of a game can make or break the experience, setting it up for greatness or dooming it to mediocrity. This is how the first fifteen minutes made Half-Life 2.
