Synthesizing graffiti to its basic minimum. Graff-Ekfrasi Apollo series presentation PichiAvo 2020-07-02 | What is graffiti? That question has been raised for decades, and the answer is still a matter of perspective.Graffiti is a gesture that leaves a trace, often in spray paint. It can take different shapes and colours, it can represent something figurative or can be abstract, and it always carries a meaning. PichiAvo have always worked with graffiti. They have created a style that pays tribute to this urban mode of expression in its most iconic form and have merged it with Classical art and sculpture. For this project, after a period of research, PichiAvo decided to extract the most primitive form of graffiti and synthesize it to its basic minimum: a coloured trace on a round blank canvas. That trace invites the viewer to think about aesthetics in art: does a stroke of spray paint deserve to be paired with a beautiful Classical sculpture? That minimal graffiti serves as a background for a portrait of a Classical Apollo.Graff-Ekfrasi Apollo is a series of tondo canvases using different colours from the range of one of the most iconic spray brands. North West Walls will be a shining example of landscape art that can be admired even while the festival is not on. It is a permanent installation. But then again, it isn't. Because North West Walls will look different every year.Arne Quinze is the curator of North West Walls. With his help and support five artists will bring the walls to life.He aims to give spectators a new view of their environment. For North West Walls, he conceived an architectural structure of shipping containers. The containers are stacked in an organic, but very deliberate way to create three towers. Technically this was no small feat, because never before have so many containers been stacked in such an apparently chaotic manner. Metal sheets on the containers make the walls truly workable and suitable for all kinds of artistic techniques. Result: a 360° architectural canvas.
