Small and fast, Jockeys are excellent leapers and know how to hang on. Once theyve locked onto the head of an unsuspecting Survivor, a Jockey can steer them away from their teammates into danger or behind obstructions.
Survivors have limited control over where the Jockey is directing them. The best antidote to a Jockey attack is a shove from a teammate.

Spitters spew a corrosive ball of steaming acid that coats the ground in a puddle. When stepped in, it can be incredibly damaging to Survivors.
Spitters can make life difficult for Survivors by preventing them from clustering together in enclosed areas, and by blocking their path at unfortunate moments.

Horrifically mutated, the Charger uses its oversized arm to its advantage, serving as an infected battering ram. The Charger is an effective class for scattering Survivors who play as a tight unit, separating them for attack.
In addition to knocking over Survivors, the Charger will also grab and carry them away from their teammates, where it will then smash them into the ground.

As a low-level associate producer for a big-name news station, Rochelle's job mostly consisted of lugging cables and fetching coffee. But when the outbreak hit and staff started calling in sick, Rochelle got her break: producing a segment from Savannah about the evacuation center located there. She was still setting up the cameras when her big story became a war zone.
But that doesn't mean she's letting go of her dream job yet. Surviving a zombie apocalypse is just something else she can use her wits and drive to produce the hell out of.

In a rural area, the army had locked down a farm to help Survivors escape the Infection. At least, until they themselves were forced to leave. However, they did not give up all hope on anybody surviving; they left a radio behind. At the end of the Blood Harvest campaign, the Survivors reach the farmhouse where the radio is, and call for their rescue, which arrives in the form of a Stryker APC.

Outside of the small town Riverside is a boathouse. On a table inside is a radio, being hailed by John and Amanda Slater, who own the S.S. Saint Lidia II, which is a small fishing vehicle that has been circling around the river while John attempts to hail anybody who had survived the Infection. He and Amanda are offering to take any armed survivors to a military hold out up the river. Fortunately, there are plenty of weapons to supply people with. At the end of the Death Toll campaign, the Survivors find the boathouse and answer the radio, making use of the various firearms around the building to help them wait through the hordes.
Source: Left 4 Dead WikiaLeft 4 Dead - Plane Pilotlaggyshield2009-04-06 | The plane pilot from the runway finale in Dead Air. Voiced by Gary Schwartz.
"The Runway Finale is the fifth and final chapter of the third campaign, Dead Air.
The survivors reach the airport runway in time to see a Commercial Airliner (presumably with its passengers all infected) crash. They then make their way towards a waiting Lockheed C-130 Hercules transport on the runway and establish radio contact with the pilot.
The ground team of the airport seem to all be dead or infected - the Pilot informs the survivors that the plane is in desperate need of refueling. After opening a valve on a connected fuel tanker, the plane begins to re-fuel and the pilot gives the group notification as the tank begins to fill.
The survivors must hold out until the plane is air-worthy against waves of common Infected, several Tanks and other Special Infected. A minigun turret helps in this regard.
Eventually, the plane is filled with fuel, the engine starts, and the survivors must board the plane from the opened hatch at the rear, evading a final rush of Infected. Success grants a view of the plane's successful departure, followed by the display of the campaign credits."
l4d wikiaLeft 4 Dead - The Street Warlaggyshield2009-03-21 | They aren't the only ones...Left 4 Dead - Hunterlaggyshield2009-03-11 | **Just the sounds, no commentary since it doesn't exist.
The Hunter is an agile Infected who can leap off of walls and jump over rooftops, similar to Half-Life 2's Fast Zombie. Hunters are primarily identified by a distinctive growl, or the screams they emit when pouncing or when they have sighted a Survivor. This boss infected has two attacks: a claw attack which does about 10 (6 in the latest update) damage (making it a viable tactic to use in the right situations), and a pouncing attack, which pins down a helpless survivor while the Hunter claws at them. The Hunter will not stop until finished, killed, or knocked off. Also, the actual pounce will cause damage from the impact with a comment coming up telling how much damage was caused by the impact. The max pounce damage that can be caused is 25, which makes it arguably the most powerful attack in the game when used correctly, taking off a whopping 1/4 of the survivors health. However, the Hunter is very weak, and it can only take a few bullets before dying. Up to three Hunters are allowed on the Infected team while playing, Versus, however, there is a very slim chance of a team getting four Hunters.
When a player takes control of the Hunter in Versus mode, the Hunter's pounce ability is measured by a meter that is started when the player crouches down. This was chosen instead of the Hunter becoming invisible once backed up against a wall or a similar piece of cover, more than likely to balance gameplay. The Hunter's power should not be mistaken, however. Two Hunters can incapacitate a Survivor with full health in about five seconds, though they should stay behind the Survivor so they don't take any damage themselves.
The Hunter has been heavily mutated under this strain of the Infection. It has gained an increase in strength that, while not creating massive muscles as in the case of the Tank, has granted it the ability to jump long distances and rapidly scale the sides of buildings with ease. Despite its empty eye sockets, it has developed far sharper senses than typical infected, allowing it to hunt with far greater efficiency. Though its mentality is similar to that of the typical infected, it's not distracted by such things as the flashing lights of pipe bombs nor is it apparently attracted by such things as car alarms going off. It should be noted that the Infection enhanced the Hunter's lung capacity for its trademark screech.
Source: Left 4 Dead WikiLeft 4 Dead - Church Guylaggyshield2009-03-10 | The Church guy is a mentally unstable man who can be found in chapter three of the Death Toll campaign, The Church. He appears to be afraid of Infection, barricading himself in the safe room that the Survivors must get through. It is later revealed that he was bitten by a female survivor who claimed to be immune, yet became an Infected; Church Guy deemed himself immune to the virus after waiting an hour. As a result he suffers from extreme paranoia of Survivors, and it has obviously driven him to insanity. Ultimately, it turns out the Church Guy isn't immune after all; he will change into a Hunter, Smoker, or Boomer. He repeatedly says "better safe than sorry" and causes a Crescendo Event where he rings the church bell to attract a horde to kill the Survivors, apparently viewing this as a way for them to "prove their immunity/humanity". After the event, the safe-house door can be opened and a Special Infected will emerge, providing a conclusion to his change. You may hear him start to growl (Hunter), cough (Smoker), or gurgle (Boomer) before you open the door. After opening the door and ascending to the second floor of the safe room, the Survivors can see that the Church guy has written his motto all over a wall, over 180 times. His voice actor, Nathan Vetterlein, also voiced the Scout from Valve's Team Fortress 2. The Survivor who infected him is male, judging by the audio files. However, you can see a corpse of a female slumped against the wall in the safe room when you walk in. It does not appear to be a Common Infected, but a body that spawns there to set the mood like the dead soldiers on the roof of Mercy Hospital. However, this may be a slip up by the creators, or she could have been killed by biting him. Despite ongoing rumors and popular belief of a slim chance of occurring, he will never turn into a Witch or a Tank after the Crescendo Event. If players were to examine the left4dead/scripts/population.txt file, it appears that there is a 50% chance of a Boomer appearing, and 25% each of either a Smoker or a Hunter appearing. No mention of the Tank or the Witch are included in this file, making it clear that there is no chance of the Church Guy becoming a Tank or Witch unless there is a serverside mod in use. Alteration of the population.txt file to force the Church Guy to transform into a Tank or Witch can create very strange results, thus verifying the fact that the Church Guy will never spawn as a Tank or Witch.
Source: Left 4 Dead WikiaLeft 4 Dead - Common Infectedlaggyshield2009-02-28 | Common Infected, also known as The Horde when they are encountered in large numbers, are the most commonly-faced enemy and the easiest to defeat. They are completely AI-controlled and fairly weak. Their strength lies in the fact they attack in groups sometimes as large as several dozen, known as hordes. While they seem capable of ignoring pain, they can still be killed as easily as a normal human can. They are capable of climbing ladders and scaling objects. The default number of infected that are spawned in a mob is around 30.
Common Infected are drawn to loud noises and bright lights. There are several times throughout the campaigns where the Survivors must do something to alert the horde, such as opening an emergency door that will set off an alarm, and there are other times where the Survivors may accidentally alert them, such as setting off a car alarm or metal detector. All of these trigger something called a Panic Event. When a pipe bomb is thrown, all of the Common Infected in the immediate area will come to investigate the loud beeps and flashing lights - chasing after the pipe bomb and clustering around it until it explodes, killing them.
Common Infected come in variety of appearances, both male and female. They are the victims of the vicious virus only known as The Infection that is sweeping through the area. Common Infected do not differ in appearance from a healthy human as much as special infected do. Some infected models can be seen in any scenario of the game, while others, such as the infected patients in Mercy Hospital or airport custom officers in Dead Air are only encountered at certain areas. When not attacking, they are very vulnerable, usually sitting down, leaning on walls, or simply standing. They are easily provoked by light, sound, or touch, but are normally only dangerous in large groups or when completely surrounding a player. The heads, arms and legs can all be shot off, this happening easiest using a shotgun or hunting rifle. The Infected react naturally to gunfire in their vicinity, turning towards the sound to attack the shooter. Shooting one in the foot will cause a very different reaction than shooting one in the chest with a pump shotgun. They are often seen engaging in bizarre activities (e.g. vomiting, attacking inanimate objects, fighting each other) when unaware of the Survivors, but begin to rush at the Survivors the very moment they see them. A common infected's attack slows down the target player, making it exceedingly difficult to run away from a mob of them that is close to you.
The infected appear to lack a sense of self preservation, as they will actively charge into flames, explosions, and against superior forces of the survivors and their weapons, even if they have encountered these things before. A possibility is that the infection has affected their brains to such a degree that they only think of spreading it, and that this is possibly what the infection is attempting to do, which is spread as far as possible. The infected also are not known to feed or drink, and it is possible that the infection has caused them to no longer perform these necessary life functions. This may indicate that the infected may eventually die of starvation or dehydration, and possibly even exposure to the elements as the infected do not seem to seek shelter in conditions that non-infected would. according to the game commentary, they designed multiple types of faces and bodies, and would have the computer pair them when spawning infected, ensuring a variety of characters. this allowed for "something around 1500 possibilities".
The Common Infected have been mutated by this strain of the infection, though not by a large degree. They have apparently lost many of their higher brain functions and a sense of pain or self-preservation, and it's also possible that their sense of smell and hearing have greatly improved. They also appear to have higher strength, speed and endurance and are capable of scaling walls, climbing up buildings, breaking down doors and walls, and running as fast as a car. They tend to act viciously against anything not perceived as being infected, though one may see a normal infected attacking another. Their mentality has greatly decreased, and they are easily distracted by loud noises and flashing lights. They have also been rumored to speak. Example: When hiding in a safe room, a player may hear a common infected saying "let us inside"; other occasions show them trying to speak, but only to hear "Ragishmutalfish". They do however seem to have some minor understanding of their situation. Some idle infected have what seems to be an illness, holding their heads in pain and vomiting.
Source: Left 4 Dead WikiLeft 4 Dead - Witchlaggyshield2009-01-31 | The Witch is the only special Infected that is not controllable by players, as it was deemed "potentially too dangerous."
It is passive upon discovery by the Survivors, but reacts with hostility to flashlight beams, physical contact, nearby Survivors, and gunfire in the vicinity. The Witch is able to down a Survivor in one hit, making them one of the most dangerous of the infected.
A Witch has a resemblance to an average female Infected, but is found slumped on the ground and sobbing instead of standing or wandering around. Its crying can be heard long before it can be seen, which gives the players a chance to avoid or attack it. If it detects a Survivor, it screams wildly and attempts to attack the player who disturbed her first. After an initial knockdown punch, it will resort to regular attacks until the knockdown punch is recharged. During these attacks it slashes so viciously that the Survivor's blood spatters all over the adjacent area.
The Witch appears in all difficulty levels, but will only down a player before slashing at them on the ground on easy to advanced difficulty. The Witch is able to kill a player in one hit on expert.
After killing a player, the Witch begins to run around and scream. It still attacks any players in her way and cause Survivors to stumble if it runs into them. It can get away from Survivors, at which point she disappears.
It is a widely-held belief that it is never, ever worth it to start a fight with a witch. That said, everyone has fought one. The Director seems to like putting them in the way, particularly at the bottoms of ladders, or in front of an invitingly open door to a safe house, and realistically every group of Survivors finds they absolutely must come into conflict with the Witch.
The Witch has been heavily mutated by this strain of the infection. Though resembling a typical female infected, it has gained a massive increase in strength, though this is not visible via muscle growth. Its fingers have developed sharp claws, making its hits even more deadly. It is known to cry when not aware of the survivors, though it is unknown whether this is due to emotions or as a trap to attract them. Though its mentality is similar to that of the typical infected, it's not distracted by such things as the flashing lights of pipe bombs nor is it apparently attracted by such things as car alarms going off, although such things as these will cause it to become aware of the survivors' presence.
Source: Left 4 Dead WikiLeft 4 Dead - Smokerlaggyshield2009-01-31 | The Smoker is an Infected with a long, whip-like tongue that is hundreds of feet long. The Smoker's tongue can be launched out of its mouth at high speeds. When the Smoker's tongue reaches one of the Survivors , it automatically wraps up their body and drags it off toward the smoker. When constricted, Survivors have a brief moment to shoot the tongue off before their arms are ensnared by the tongue; if they fail, the survivor is helplessly dragged off, and will take damage until either the smoker or he/she dies. The smoker claws at an ensnared survivor when they are dragged all the way back to him, while at the same time the survivor takes damage from the tongue constricting them if an obstacle obstructs them from being dragged to the smoker. If a survivor isn't dragged all the way back to a smoker due to an obstruction (for example, a horde surrounding the survivor) the survivor will only take damage from the tongue's squeeze. When killed, a smoker leaves a haze of black smoke, distorting the Survivors' vision and disabling character speech and in-game voice communication.
The Smoker has been heavily mutated by this strain of the infection. Though it resembles most typical infected, it is taller, and its skin has become covered in growths, that causes a large black cloud to form when ruptured during death. It has also developed an extremely long, powerful tongue capable of extending great distances and easily dragging and strangling its unlucky target. Though its mentality is similar to that of the typical infected, it not distracted by such things as the flashing lights of pipe bombs nor is it apparently attracted by such things as car alarms going off. Some have suggested that the mutated "tongue" could be actually the creature's intestines.
Source: Left 4 Dead WikiLeft 4 Dead - Tanklaggyshield2009-01-31 | The Tank is a muscular Infected of gigantic proportions. This monster is capable of throwing large items such as cars or blocks of concrete it rips out of the ground, and bashing through otherwise impenetrable walls. The Tank keeps a high profile, able to be heard by the Survivors from a great distance due to its loud growls and the thrashing it makes when running. The immense strength and sheer toughness of the tank make it a terrible foe in combat, especially to inexperienced Survivors.
The Tank has been heavily mutated by this strain of the infection. It has developed large, thick muscles that not only indicate its incredible strength and endurance, but make it nearly bulletproof, resulting in extreme firepower being needed to take one down. However, this increase in muscular tissue makes it a large target, and, like other infected, is highly flammable. Its mind has also been heavily affected, making it extremely bloodthirsty, even for an infected, but is not affected by minor distractions such as the flashing lights on pipe bombs, and does not appear to be attracted to car alarms going off.
Source: Left 4 dead WikiLeft 4 Dead - Boomerlaggyshield2009-01-31 | The Boomer is an extremely bloated Special Infected, which seems to have been filled with an odorous slime. They are able to projectile vomit this bile, and if it hits the Survivors, it covers them, temporarily blinding them and attracting the Horde. When the boomer dies, it explodes and discharges large amounts of gore and viscera, which will also attract the Common Infected if an unfortunate Survivor is caught in the blast.
The Boomer has been heavily mutated by this strain of the infection. It has become extremely bloated to the point that a slight rupture in its flesh will cause it to explode in a bloody, bile-filled explosion. It is unknown whether it was the result of the infection of an incredibly obese individual or the result of a strange strain of the infection. Massive growths have appeared along its skin, indicating that it may still be expanding. It has developed the ability to vomit from great distances, and its bile has developed the unique characteristic of attracting all nearby infected in the surrounding area, possibly through smell. Though its mentality is similar to that of the typical infected, it not distracted by such things as the flashing lights of pipe bombs nor is it apparently attracted by such things as car alarms going off.

He is voiced by Jim French
-It took two eventful tours in Vietnam, a handful of medals, a knee full of shrapnel, and an honorable discharge before the unthinkable happened: Bill ran out of wars. But now an army of undead has declared war on humanity. After decades of aimless drifting and dead-end jobs, Bill's finally gotten back the only thing he ever wanted: an enemy to fight

Francis is one of the four playable Survivors in Left 4 Dead. He is a large, tough biker with tattoos covering his arms and neck. His tattoos identify him as a member of "Hell's Legion", a name possibly inspired by the real-world Hell's Angels Motorcycle Club. Since his character model has changed, it has been speculated that Francis' new face was modeled after the head developer of the game, Mike Booth, and that he has the Lambda symbol from the Half-Life series cut into his hair. In the official media, he is always seen wielding either the pump shotgun or the auto shotgun. He is voiced by Vince Valenzuela
-Cocky, loud, and pretty sure he's indestructible, Francis acts like the zombie apocalypse is the world's biggest bar fight. When the virus hit, everybody else stockpiled food and looked for a place to hide. Francis found a gun and had some fun. No cops, no laws, no order—if it wasn't for all the zombies, he could almost get used to life like this.
