It appears that visiting just after the Easter holidays is now one of the best times to visit. I also spot a bit of preparation work for the new Project ocean ride in Forbidden Valley and show you my newly purchased heritage related keyring :)

Exploring Cuckoo Arbour at Alton Towers AltonTowersMemories 2024-04-17 | Join me as I go for a walk to the somewhat mysterious Cuckoo Arbour folly in the gardens at Alton Towers. Most probably built in the early to mid 1800s to amuse guests who would be walking the grounds for pleasure during that period and beyond. This is off the beaten track but at no point do you need to go past any 'no entry' points or closed gates. Some were in the gardens and some were in what is the modern day theme park. A very niche subject, I accept! I will use old and new maps, old images and will explore on the ground. Actually, it apparently wasn't even supposed to be open as myself along with other guests were asked to leave the house after a while as staff had mistakenly accidentally not cordened off access (you can see that I occasionally come across other random strangers inside). It was great to have a quick look around this part of the house though after many years of it being closed to the public. Shame about the state they've left it in with all of the Scarefest leftovers, however.

The Orangery Alton Towers Gardens History AltonTowersMemories 2023-03-19 | Upon hearing that the Orangery (also known as the Quarry Greenhouse) at Alton Towers may possibly be being refurbished in the next several years I decided to capture the current state that it's in and also to explain some of the history of the building. There is current footage and little bits of old footage and also some old photo's etc. I even drew a picture of what the Orangery would have originally looked like when first built (I'm not an artist, so please go easy on me haha). The Curse at Alton Manor Opening Day First Riders Experience AltonTowersMemories 2023-03-18 | Join me as we start at the front of the queue for Alton Towers on the opening day of the Curse at Alton Manor (at Alton Towers theme park). Then we go through the turnstiles and I go (unusually) full enthusiast and have a steady jog to 'The Curse' to get to the front of the queue. The lengths you go to sometimes to get some decent footage to look back on (training for the 5k run at Towers late last year helped)! We then get led through the empty queuline by one of the dressed up actors and there are lots of actors etc around the outside of the house as time goes on. John Wardley (designer of Nemesis et al) is sighted at least a couple of times (from memory, once opening the door of the Manor and once in the giftshop). Then there is Michael Eley who was treated to a VIP first ride as he has written a book about the original ride and is known to Alton Towers. Shawn Sanbrooke of Theme Park Worldwide is also spotted turning up to join the queue and do a bit of vlogging. We latterly enter the facade of the house...Then, it's simply time to Exit through the giftshop (where John Wardley is spotted) as I don't break the rules and film inside. Enjoy :)

Apologies in advance for some of the lesser quality & shaky video in the second half as this was from 2006 and recorded on mini DV tape from a not brilliant old camcorder. Alton Towers Country House Ruins Walk Through AltonTowersMemories 2022-08-21 | Late August 2022. I decided that I'd do a bit of an impromptu walkthrough of the Towers Ruins for 2022. The Towers have hardly been open for a couple of years now (which is very poor) so when I heard that they had actually been opened for the first time in 2022 a couple of weeks ago I thought it was best to go and have a look (not really meaning to film a walkthrough beforehand), basically as you never know when or if the place will be open again. Unfortunately some previously open bits of the ruins weren't open, but that wasn't a surprise due to the way Scarefest props take up most of the space nowadays (and H&S concerns). As I said this was a bit of an unplanned film so there's some 'umming' and 'erring' as I was just speaking off the cuff without any planning. I hope you enjoy the walkaround. Ug Swinger POV Alton Towers 2006 AltonTowersMemories 2021-09-08 | By 'un-popular' demand, I bring you footage from the Ug Swinger in Ug Land at Alton Towers from c2006. No-one asked for it, but you're getting it! It was positioned in the area near where the waltzers were placed in the 2021 season, very close to the Rita rollercoaster. The particular highlight is just how close Rita used to pass the chairs when the chairs are at their highest point. I think the ride gets shut down at one point for people messing around holding chairs as well. Probably about 5-6 different bits of rides in total. Errr, enjoy!??
Chocolate Towers at Alton Towers 2006 AltonTowersMemories 2021-09-02 | An Easter event at Alton Towers in 2006 was named 'Chocolate Towers'. The main feature was a large sweet ejecting volcano structure named 'Chocuvious' (shouldn't that have been Chocuvius though?!) at the bottom of Towers Street. It was partly to celebrate the opening of the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ride also and there were dancers, a chocolate fountain etc etc. Just a bit of raw footage here, I've not tried to create a masterpiece or anything. Nemesis Red Blood Waterfalls Alton Towers looped AltonTowersMemories 2021-08-23 | Footage from a few trips to Alton Towers around 2006. Features the red water that was used until there were complaints from the local authorities that it was polluting local water sources. Obviously it's not HD footage as my consumer camcorder back then (which used a tape!) wasn't as good as modern day devices. I've looped the footage three times so that the 'blood' can be enjoyed for a bit longer :)

The Dovecote Pigeon House Alton Towers History AltonTowersMemories 2011-07-08 | Footage and history of the Pigeon house at Alton Towers built in the 1840's (partly designed by A.W.N Pugin). This is a little known feature and area that 1000's of visitors walk around the vicinity of every day that the park is open without realising that it's there. A clear-up of the area was done c2007 but the area has once again overgrown in recent times. This area once housed a small zoo. Also in this courtyard area is "Her Ladyships Oratory" which was recently partially destroyed and then rebuilt.
