Wood Turning - Sapele Iridescent Interstellar Nebula Designed Platter

caitlan the cat 2022-07-10 | I have turned a platter from a piece of sapele on my lathe this week. Using Jo Sonja iridescent paint colours I have then decorated the platter with cosmic cloud designs to form a pattern of nebula across the front.

The final effect which I coated with acrylic gloss lacquer really shines through and appears to be a scene from an interstellar movie.

Wood Turning - Natural Edge Spalted Beech Bowl

caitlan the cat 2022-07-03 | For my project this week I have taken a piece of spalted beech which still had some of bark left on. I decided to us the natural contours of the wood to shape the bowl and leave a natural edge on the outside of the bowl.

The spalting of the wood is absolutely fantastic in one area looking like snake or fish scales, how wonderful nature really is! Once shaped and sanded I coated with acrylic sanding sealer before finishing with Cut and Polish and Wood Wax 22.

Wood Turning - Turning a bowl from a piece of Mahogany

caitlan the cat 2022-06-26 | Using a combination of traditional tools and my Easy Wood Tools carbide cutters I have turned a piece of mahogany into a bowl.

Using the detailer I decided to create a feature around the top and rim of the bowl before finishing once sanded with Cut and Polish and Wood Wax 22.

I really like the look of the grain on this piece and once polished it really had a nice shine on it.

Wood Turning - Pink Milliput Leopard Print Burl Bowl

caitlan the cat 2022-06-19 | This weeks video had to be made over a number of visits to the workshop. I had a piece of what I believe is Oak Burl which had some interesting inclusions in it.

I rough turned the outside of a bowl and the inclusions using Milliput which I had added pigment to turn it PINK. Then finish turned the outside and repeated for the inside of the bowl.

As well as the burl having some beautiful colourings to it the addition of the pink Milliput looks like a leopard print effect both on the outside and inside of the bowl.

It certainly was a fun project to make and my Easy Wood Tools really helped to get a nice finish with the Milliput. I finished the piece using Cut and Polish, Wood Wax 22 and a layer of Microcrystalline wax.

Wood Turning - String Pull Beech Bowl with a Twist - Iridescent Paints

caitlan the cat 2022-06-12 | This weekend I have been having some fun with my Wood Turning. I have taken a piece of beech wood and turned it into a bowl.

I have then coated the outside with ebonising lacquer and using Jo Sonja iridescent paints and the string pull technique to decorate with layered colours to create an amazing end effect.

The inside of the bowl has then been turned and finished with Cut and Polish and Woodwax 22 to leave the natural look of the grain.

I hope you enjoy my twist on the string pull technique.

Wood Turning - Bubinga Bowl

caitlan the cat 2022-06-05 | This week I have had the pleasure of turning a piece of bubinga wood which has some amazing grain feature that really popped when finishing.

Once I had turned the bowl I sanded through to 240 grain, applied sanding sealer then worked the wood with Black and White Yorkshire grit before finishing with Chestnut Microcrystalline wax.

Wood Turning | Beech Small Change Bowl | Memorial for Grandad

caitlan the cat 2022-05-29 | This weekend my beloved Grandad passed away and I decided that my project this weekend would be in memory of him. He lived near the seaside so going to visit him was always like going on holiday. He would always save his small change for me so that when I visited I would have some money to go and play on the arcade machines.

I therefore decided to make my own small change bowl so that I had a piece that I could put my spare coins in and each time I used it would remind me of my lovely Grandad.

I turned the outside of this piece of beech into a bee hive shape using my Easy Wood Tools then once sanded and applying sanding sealer I then finished it with Chestnut Products Cut and Polish and Wood Wax 22.

I hope you like it and I hope my Grandad would too.

Wood Turning - Cosmic Centrifugal Tulip Wood Platter

caitlan the cat 2022-05-22 | For my project this week I decided to make a platter from a 10 inch by 10 inch piece of tulip wood I had. I turned the shape with my Easy Wood Tools.

Using my iridescent Jo Sonja paints in both swirls using bubble wrap and centrifugal forces to create a layered design on top of Ebonizing lacquer.

I then cut out the centre which I finished with Chestnut Cut and Polish and Wood Wax 22 before creating an outer and inner Golden Ring with the paints and finishing the piece with layers of Acrylic Lacquer.

Wood Turning | The as it happens turned wooden rice bowl

caitlan the cat 2022-05-15 | This blank was gifted to me by @jpwoodwork whilst at Makers Central but I am not sure what type of wood it is.

I decided to go with a style similar to a rice bowl with a foot for it to stand on and quite thin sides.

Finished with Chestnut Cut and Polish, Wood Wax 22 and Microcrystalline Wax.

How I used Jo Sonja Iridescent Paints for the first time - Wood Turning a Tulip Bowl

caitlan the cat 2022-05-08 | Watch how I turn a tulip wood bowl then decorate it using the Jo Sonja iridescent paints.

I used my old friend bubble wrap to help provide the design I hoped for and was astounded by the depth of colour.

I used Yorkshire Grit and Chestnut Wood Wax 22 to finish the outside of the bowl and Chestnut Ebonising lacquer and Acrylic Gloss on the top.

Hopefully this is not like catnip for me!

Makers Central 2022 - The CAT reTURNs - Wood Turning

caitlan the cat 2022-05-01 | It has been a while since my last video as I took a break from weekly videos to concentrate on my GCSE exams, begin life at college and also got a job but that has not stopped me from continuing my love for turning.

When the opportunity was offered to me by Easy Wood Tools to come down and demonstrate at Makers Central 2022 it didn't take long to hit reply and say YES, YES, YES.

This is me back on camera and behind a lathe turning a lovely piece of sycamore, finished with Yorkshire Grit and Chestnut Wood Wax 22.

For extra fun while watching the video see some of the other amazing turners I got the pleasure of spending time with this weekend.

Wood Turning - Real time Tulip Bowl Turning

caitlan the cat 2021-07-18 | In this weeks video I turn a tulip wood blank into a bowl, in real time and you see it as it happens. There is no fast forward, no speeds up, nothing taken out with the exception of me swapping tools.

Every bit of wood shaved from the blank is on video to see, every bit of sanding and every bit of polishing.

I used Chestnut cellulose sanding sealer, cut and polish and finished with woodwax 22.

Wood Turning | Beech Bowl for Fathers Day

caitlan the cat 2021-06-20 | In the United Kingdom today it was father's day and what better way to spend some of the day but out in the workshop with my Dad behind the camera making something special.

I took this piece of beech and turned a bowl with a wobbly curve feature on the outside. There was some evidence of wood worm to contend with so the shape had to change a little to remove as much of that as I could to make the finish the bowl.

I used Cut and Polish and Wood Wax 22 to really make the natural grain pop.

Wood Turning | Natural Features Cherry Wood Bowl | Back in the Workshop

caitlan the cat 2021-06-13 | I have been concentrating on my school exams so have not had much chance to get into the workshop in the last few weeks. Now that they are all over I could not wait.

This week I have used a lovely piece of cherry wood to make a bowl. Keeping some of the bark on the outside to try and make a natural feature from it.

Wood Turning | Berberis Root Ball - Red Resin - Potpourri Dish

caitlan the cat 2021-05-23 | This is my final project using the berberis root ball that was grown and dug up from Grandma's garden. Once the piece of berberis had dried out and ripped itself apart I added red resin to fill all the gaps.

Due to the natural colours of the berberis contrasting with the red resin I intended this piece to be a decorative dish and turned it into a potpourri dish to give it a function.

Wood Turning | Lidded Beech Pot decorated with Iridescent Colours

caitlan the cat 2021-05-02 | This week I have made a lidded pot out of a piece of beech wood. I have then used acrylic iridescent paint to decorate the outside.

Once turned I sprayed ebonising lacquer to the outside then I apply the paint colours on a piece of cling film (plastic wrap) which I then place on the project which create a cool random effect merging the colours.

Wood Turning | Gnarly Berberis Root Ball Turning with Resin

caitlan the cat 2021-04-25 | About 18 months ago I dug up this berberis bush root ball from my Grandma's garden. It has been drying out since then an I have finally dared to turn it.

Once I had rough turned it I found that the inclusions were quite deep in places and I would not have managed to turn it as it was - I therefore decided to split it in two and add resin to the first piece.

I really think the blue resin has worked well in contrast with the natural yellow colour of the wood.

Wood Turning | Creating a London Scene | Patterning with my Dremel

caitlan the cat 2021-04-11 | This week I had a piece of conifer which I had rough turned wet a few months ago, now it had dried I decided to make a podium to create a London Scene using a Beefeater, Telephone Box and Big Ben. All covered with a glass dome for protection.

I coloured the wood using English Walnut stain and created patterns in the wood using my Dremel cutting disks.

Wood Turning | Conifer Barrel

caitlan the cat 2021-03-28 | This week I have used a piece of conifer that was cut down from my Grandma's garden. The tree was actually my Grand Pa's tree so it was an extra special piece of wood to turn.

I decided I would like to make a barrel, cut in the middle and hollowed out. I used silver gilt cream to enhance the grain and finished it with lemon oil and wood wax 22.

Wood Turning | Purple Lidded Box | Practice Using Skew Tool

caitlan the cat 2021-03-14 | I have not done much spindle turning recently so this weekend took the opportunity to make this lidded box. I coloured the inside black with a gloss finish and used purple spirit stain to colour the outside of the box.

I have used spirit stains on each of the steps to make a rainbow effect it was a really fun project to make.

Woodturning | Chacate Preto Bowl

caitlan the cat 2021-02-21 | This weeks project is a bowl made from an African timber called Chacte Preto. It really has some interesting colouring and was a lovely wood to turn.

I sanded to 240 then applied cellulose sanding sealer before using Chestnut Cut and Polish then applied a coat of Wood Wax 22 to really make this wood shine.

The pictures do not really do this wood justice and it looks really amazing in real life.

Woodturning | Beech Flower Pot with Centrifugal Painting Effect

caitlan the cat 2021-02-14 | From a piece of Beech wood I have made a Flower Pot shaped bowl which I have then decorated the iridescent paints using the centrifugal painting effect.

I coloured the inside of the flower pot black then added dots of paint in the middle at that bottom before spinning the piece and watching the paint reaching up from the bottom.

To finish I coated it with a number of layers of gloss lacquer which really made the colours pop off the surface and pull out the glittery nature of the paints.

Woodturning | Ash Butterfly Flower Platter | String Pull | GCSE Art Project 2

caitlan the cat 2021-01-31 | This is the second platter I have made towards my GCSE Project. The theme is fantastic and strange and I have always found butterflies to be fantastic and to combine them with a flower would be a strange thing to do.

The platter is made from a piece of Ash which I shaped then created a canvas to work on in the middle. I sprayed this with lacquer before using iridescent paints and string pulling technique to create the design.

Woodturning | Beech Fire Bowl | #YTCCC2021 January

caitlan the cat 2021-01-24 | I decided to take part in the YouTube Cross Channel Challenge 2021 January on Fire #YTCCC2021. So using a piece of beech I turned the outside of a bowl before setting it on fire.

It was interesting as it opened up areas of the wood so after sanding I used silver gilt cream to highlight these areas which gave a lovely effect. I finished it with melomine gloss lacquer.

Woodturning | Spalted Elm Bowl with Characters?

caitlan the cat 2021-01-17 | I had a piece of spalted elm which I have turned a bowl from. The colours of the wood and the patterns of the spalting were quite interesting so although I had originally planned to do something with colour on this piece I felt that the natural look was far more interesting. As such I finished it with a coating of Wood Wax 22 which really made the grain pop and shine.

Looking closely at the patterns on the wood I felt that I could see the resemblance of a number of different shapes, animals and characters and I wonder what other people see in the wood. Please let me know.

Woodturning | Beech Log Fruit Bowl

caitlan the cat 2021-01-10 | In this project I have used a log of Beech wood to make a fruit bowl with a cove and bead design around the rim of the bowl.

After turning and sanding I applied sanding sealer then Cut and Polish before finishing it with Wood Wax 22.

The log of wood was still wet and had some moisture held within it, it was a log cut from a tree from my grandma's garden.

Woodturning | Beech Bowl | Metallic Paint Design

caitlan the cat 2021-01-03 | For this project I turned a bowl from a piece of slightly spalted beech wood. I added a large lip before hollowing out the middle of the bowl.

On the outside of the bowl I used metallic paints (silver, black and white) using cling film to colour various sections. When I peeled back the masking tape some of the paints had seeped underneath.

However I do quite like the way the paints have leaked giving it a more organic look stretching out into the wood.

Woodturning | Chestnut Firework Platter | String Pull Effect

caitlan the cat 2020-12-30 | To bring in the New Year I decided to make a platter with a firework design. I chose a 12 inch piece of Chestnut Wood and used iridescent paints with the string pull effect to create the piece.

It was a fun project to make and I had a lot of fun with all the colours.

Woodturning | Beech Cocktail Bowl

caitlan the cat 2020-12-27 | Inspired by my Christmas meal starter which was served in a cocktail bowl, I thought it would be a cool idea to try to make a similar shape in one of my projects.

Using a piece of spalted beech I have turned a cocktail bowl on my Record Power Coronet Herald lathe.

After sanding as a finish I used Cut and Polish and finally Woodwax 22 from Chestnut.

Woodturning | Rainbow Snake Ash Platter - GCSE Art Project 1

caitlan the cat 2020-12-20 | This week my project is towards my ART GCSE which is on a theme of Fantastic and Strange, so I have combined a Rainbow with a Snake which I feel fits the description quite well.

The piece of ash is 12 inch diameter and a depth of 2 inch. I have used Chestnut Products rainbow spirit stains to colour and finished with an acrylic gloss lacquer which really gives it a shine and makes it look like a stain glass window effect.

I turned it on my Record Power Coronet Herald lathe.

Woodturning | Stained Beech Bowl coloured Golden Oak

caitlan the cat 2020-12-13 | Using a beech log which was cut down from my Grandma's garden I turned this bowl. It turned really nicely and it had an interesting inclusion in the middle of it which gave it an additional feature I had not planned for.

As it is quite a pale coloured wood I decided to stain it Golden Oak using Chestnut Products spirit stain which helped bring the grain patterns to life.

I used friction polish as a final coat to give it a lovely shine.

It a a good size bowl which would make a perfect fruit bowl.

Woodturning | Elm Platter with Stars and Iridescent Colour

caitlan the cat 2020-12-06 | I had a beautiful piece of Elm to turn this week and decided to make a platter from it on my lathe. It was a large piece to begin with which I turned with sloping sides which really brought out the woods grain and natural colours.

On the top I used sticky glue dots to attach star shapes to it before colouring it black then using shades of blue coloured iridescent paints and my cling film technique to colour the top.

Before finishing off the turning to produce the finished product.

This has not been my original plan as you can see at the end of the video where I show you what did not quite work with my original design...

Woodturning | Double Axis Turning an Apple Log to Bowl

caitlan the cat 2020-11-29 | I thought I would try something a little different this week using a log of apple wood. I began by spindle turning the log to round and then creating a pattern with beads and coves before turning the piece through 90 degrees and turning a bowl from it.

It was really interesting piece to turn and created a cool effect round the edges of the bowl. It was quite difficult to work with as the outer bowl shape is long and thin and not round.

Woodturning | Plum Log Pot

caitlan the cat 2020-11-22 | In this weeks project I start with a log of Plum Wood and turned a Pot from it. There was quite an amount of spongy spalting to deal with as I turned it which meant a design change a couple of times.

The natural markings and colours of the wood made this a really interesting piece to turn. I used Chestnut Friction Polish to finish it and then put a final coat of microcrystalline wax to protect the it.

Again I used the pivot option on my Record Power Coronet Herald to make it easier when hollowing and really allowed me to get a good depth of it.

Woodturning | Chucking point waste wood to Christmas Decoration

caitlan the cat 2020-11-19 | A little bit of everything in this video.

I have always saved the last bit of wood after I part off the projects that I do and wondered if there was something that I could do with. So I used them to make a mould which I covered in silicone.

Using resin I then made some really cool Christmas Decorations.

Woodturning | Chamfuta Bowl

caitlan the cat 2020-11-15 | This week I have taken an African wood blank, Chamfuta and turned a bowl.

The wood is a beautiful golden colour with some interesting grain patterns.

Once I had sanded it I used Yorkshire Grit, then used Chestnut Friction Polish to give the bowl an amazing shine.

Woodturning | Walnut Bowl

caitlan the cat 2020-11-08 | I had a lovely piece of Walnut that I decided to turn a bowl from. I used my Record Power Coronet Herald Lathe to turn the bowl and used the pivot head for the first time to help me hollow the bowl which worked really well.

Woodturning | Handy Halloween Resin Treat Bowl

caitlan the cat 2020-11-01 | Having been given a hand casting present for my birthday I used the mould again with resin and that got me thinking...

I bought some more moulding alginate and used it to make more casts of my hand. Then used them to create a bowl for handing out Halloween treats.

Woodturning | Winged Red Pine Bowl

caitlan the cat 2020-10-25 | I had an interesting chunk of Red Pine in my wood stock and thought it would make a really good winged bowl.

It has some amazing colours and grain and there is a fault running all the way through the middle of it which look really amazing.

Woodturning | Apple Wood Goblet

caitlan the cat 2020-10-18 | I have not done much spindle turning lately so having this lovely piece of apple wood I decided that is what I would do.

I turned a goblet from the apple wood and after sanding and applying sanding sealer, I used cut and polish and Chestnut Microcrystalline wax to finish.

Woodturning | Elm Solar System Bowl

caitlan the cat 2020-10-11 | This week's project I wanted to add some resin to my turning. I started with an Elm blank and turned and finished the outside.

After shaping the inside, I drilled out a number of holes so that I could add resin and turn again.

With the central colour being yellow it feels like the SUN at the centre of the bowl with planets surrounding it.

Woodtunning | Banksia Seed Pod - Light House

caitlan the cat 2020-10-04 | I have had this Banksia Seed Pod for a while and been wondering what I could do with it, so I decided that I could turn it into a bed side light.

After turning the outside I added the resin and chose a glitter yellow hoping that it would fill all the holes and work really well.

Then after re-turning the outside I hollowed out the banksia, made a stand and holder for my light fitting and finished the top.

Woodturning | Oak and Chestnut Candle Holders

caitlan the cat 2020-09-27 | I picked up a pair of small glasses from my local hobby shop and thought they would be perfect for putting tea tree candles in them.

So I took a small piece of Oak and designed a holder for the glass, then took a larger piece of Chestnut Wood and copied the design but bigger for the second glass.

I finished the pieces with Cut and Polish and then a layer of Wood Wax 22.
