Amazing Thailand Trip ~ Part 3 ~ KOH CHANG
updated
Much third-party evidence for the landings exists, and detailed rebuttals to the hoax claims have been made. Since the late 2000s, high-definition photos taken by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) of the Apollo landing sites have captured the Lunar Module descent stages and the tracks left by the astronauts. In 2012, images were released showing five of the six Apollo missions' American flags erected on the Moon still standing. The exception is that of Apollo 11, which has lain on the lunar surface since being blown over by the Lunar Module Ascent Propulsion System.
Despite the fact that they are demonstrably false and universally regarded as pseudoscience, these conspiracy theories have held public interest for more than 40 years. Opinion polls taken in various locations have shown that between 6% and 20% of Americans, 25% of Britons, and 28% of Russians surveyed believe that the crewed landings were faked. Even as late as 2001, the Fox television network documentary Conspiracy Theory: Did We Land on the Moon? claimed NASA faked the first landing in 1969 to win the Space Race.
An early and influential book about the subject of a Moon-landing conspiracy, We Never Went to the Moon: America's Thirty Billion Dollar Swindle, was self-published in 1976 by Bill Kaysing, a former US Navy officer with a Bachelor of Arts in English. Despite having no knowledge of rockets or technical writing, Kaysing was hired as a senior technical writer in 1956 by Rocketdyne, the company that built the F-1 engines used on the Saturn V rocket. He served as head of the technical publications unit at the company's Propulsion Field Laboratory until 1963. The many allegations in Kaysing's book effectively began discussion of the Moon landings being faked. The book claims that the chance of a successful crewed landing on the Moon was calculated to be 0.0017%, and that despite close monitoring by the USSR, it would have been easier for NASA to fake the Moon landings than to really go there.
In 1980, the Flat Earth Society accused NASA of faking the landings, arguing that they were staged by Hollywood with Walt Disney sponsorship, based on a script by Arthur C. Clarke and directed by Stanley Kubrick. Folklorist Linda Dégh suggests that writer-director Peter Hyams' film Capricorn One (1978), which shows a hoaxed journey to Mars in a spacecraft that looks identical to the Apollo craft, might have given a boost to the hoax theory's popularity in the post-Vietnam War era. Dégh sees a parallel with other attitudes during the post-Watergate era, when the American public were inclined to distrust official accounts. Dégh writes: "The mass media catapult these half-truths into a kind of twilight zone where people can make their guesses sound as truths. Mass media have a terrible impact on people who lack guidance." In A Man on the Moon, first published in 1994, Andrew Chaikin mentions that at the time of Apollo 8's lunar-orbit mission in December 1968, similar conspiracy ideas were already in circulation.

After a failed attempt to land on the moon in 2019, India now joins the United States, the Soviet Union and China as only the fourth country to achieve this milestone. A lander with a rover inside touched down on the lunar surface at 6:04 p.m. local time, sparking celebrations across India, including in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru, where space scientists watching the landing erupted in cheers and applause.
The successful mission showcases India’s rising standing as a technology and space powerhouse and dovetails with the image that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is trying to project: an ascendant country asserting its place among the global elite.
“India is now on the moon. India has reached the south pole of the moon — no other country has achieved that. We are witnessing history,” Modi said as he waved the Indian tri-colored flag while watching the landing from South Africa, where he is participating in the BRICS nations summit.
The lunar rover will slide down a flap from the lander within hours or a day and conduct experiments, including an analysis of the mineral composition of the lunar surface, said S. Somnath, chairman of the state-run Indian Space Research Organization.
The mission, which began more than a month ago at an estimated cost of $75 million, is expected to last another two weeks. Somnath said that India would next attempt a manned lunar mission.
Nuclear-armed India grew to become the world’s fifth-largest economy last year, and the success of the lunar mission will likely help Modi’s popularity ahead of a crucial general election next year.
India’s success comes just days after Russia’s Luna-25, which was aiming for the same lunar region, spun into an uncontrolled orbit and crashed. It would have been the first successful Russian lunar landing after a gap of 47 years. Russia’s head of the state-controlled space corporation Roscosmos attributed the failure to the lack of expertise due to the long break in lunar research that followed the last Soviet mission to the moon in 1976.
Modi’s efforts to revitalize India’s global standing — and to finally shake off the legacy of British colonialization — has resonated with many Indians. The moon landing was seen by many as further proof that their country is a rising, modern superpower.
Excited and anxious people across India crowded around televisions in offices, shops, restaurants and homes. Thousands prayed Tuesday for the success of the mission with oil lamps on the river banks, temples and religious places, including the holy city of Varanasi in northern India.
s the lander approached the lunar surface, dozens of people in a government-run planetarium started praying with folded hands. They switched to cheering and clapping once the lander touched down.
A man waved a banner reading ’’The Moon in India’s arms.”
Shrini Singh, a New Delhi resident, said she got goosebumps. ’’It’s a very happy moment … you can see the energy. It’s beyond words.”
Mitakshi Sinha, a student, said the successful mission motivated her. “And now I also want to be part of ISRO,” she said, referring to the country’s space agency.
India will host next month’s G-20 Summit, and Modi is expected to use the event to spotlight the country’s growing geopolitical clout. Even as it maintains historic ties with Russia, the U.S. and other Western nations continue to woo India, whom they see as a critical bulwark against China’s growing influence.
Accolades poured in from around the world to acknowledge India’s emergence as a modern space power.
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson congratulated India on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying ``We’re glad to be your partner on this mission!”
“Incredible!” European Space Agency’s director general Josef Aschbacher tweeted.

The Apollo 17 mission was the first nighttime Apollo launch. Liftoff from Kennedy Space Center in Florida had been scheduled for the evening of December 6, 1972, but a technical malfunction resulted in a delay until 12:33 am the following day. The three-stage Saturn V rocket-powered launch vehicle took less than 12 minutes to reach Earth orbit. A few hours later, the command and service module (the spacecraft that would take the astronauts into lunar orbit), separated from the launch vehicle and docked with the lunar module. The last remaining stage of the launch vehicle was then released and set on a course to crash into the Moon. The astronauts’ spacecraft reached lunar orbit on December 10.
Cernan and Schmitt landed the lunar module, named Challenger, on the surface of the Moon on December 11, 2 hours and 34 minutes after separation from the command and service module. They landed in the Taurus-Littrow Valley, a region chosen by mission planners for its geologic interest, notably the proximity of “young” (less than 3-billion-year-old) volcanic areas. A few hours after landing, Cernan stepped out of the lunar module for the first of three periods of extra-vehicular activity (EVA). There were more than 22 hours of EVA in all, during which Cernan and Schmitt traveled 19 miles (30.5 km) in their lunar rover, an electrically powered wheeled vehicle of a type first used in the Apollo 15 mission. They gathered 243.65 pounds (110.52 kg) of rock and soil samples; performed experiments pertaining to lunar gravity, seismic activity, and other subjects; and deployed an “experiment package” that transmitted data back to Earth for several years. Meanwhile, Evans orbited the Moon in the command and service module.
After 75 hours on the surface, Cernan and Schmitt lifted off on December 14 and rejoined Evans a little more than two hours later. Once the astronauts’ equipment and scientific specimens had been unloaded, the lunar module was no longer needed and was therefore allowed to drop to the lunar surface. On December 16 the command and service module left lunar orbit, and the astronauts set course for Earth. On the following day Evans performed several spacewalks to collect photographic equipment from the service module. After this was done, the service module, which had been used mostly for storage and propulsion, was detached from the command module. On December 19 the command module, named America, splashed down in the South Pacific Ocean, only 4 miles (6.5 km) from the recovery ship USS Ticonderoga. America was later put on display at Space Center Houston, the visitor centre of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Johnson Space Center.
It was known at the time of Apollo 17 that there would be no more crewed Moon landings for years to come. As he took his last steps on the surface, Cernan made a short speech that ended with a vow that “we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind. Godspeed the crew of Apollo 17.”

The First Punic War had ended in a Roman victory in 241 BC after 23 years and enormous losses on both sides. After the war Carthage expanded its holdings in Iberia where in 219 BC a Carthaginian army under Hannibal besieged, captured and sacked the pro-Roman city of Saguntum. In early 218 BC Rome declared war on Carthage, beginning the Second Punic War. Later that year, Hannibal surprised the Romans by marching his army overland from Iberia, through Gaul and over the Alps to Cisalpine Gaul (modern northern Italy). Reinforced by Gallic allies he obtained crushing victories over the Romans at the battles of Trebia (218) and Lake Trasimene (217). Moving to southern Italy in 216 Hannibal defeated the Romans again at the battle of Cannae, where he annihilated the largest army the Romans had ever assembled. After the death or capture of more than 120,000 Roman troops in less than three years, many of Rome's Italian allies, notably Capua, defected to Carthage, giving Hannibal control over much of southern Italy. As Syracuse and Macedonia joined the Carthaginian side after Cannae, the conflict spread. Between 215 and 210 BC the Carthaginians attempted to capture Roman-held Sicily and Sardinia, but were unsuccessful. The Romans took drastic steps to raise new legions: enrolling slaves, criminals and those who did not meet the usual property qualification; this vastly increased the number of men they had under arms. For the next decade the war in southern Italy continued, with Roman armies slowly recapturing most of the Italian cities that had joined Carthage.
The Romans established a lodgement in north-east Iberia in 218 BC; the Carthaginians repeatedly attempted and failed to reduce it. In 211 the Romans took the offensive in Iberia and were badly defeated but maintained their hold on the north east. In 209 BC the new Roman commander Publius Scipio captured Carthago Nova, the main Carthaginian base in the peninsula. In 208 Scipio defeated Hasdrubal, although Hasdrubal was able to withdraw most of his troops into Gaul and then Cisalpine Gaul in spring 207 BC. This new Carthaginian invasion was defeated at the Battle of the Metaurus. At the battle of Ilipa in 206 Scipio permanently ended the Carthaginian presence in Iberia.
Scipio invaded Carthaginian Africa in 204 BC, compelling the Carthaginian Senate to recall Hannibal's army from Italy. The final engagement of the war took place between armies under Scipio and Hannibal at Zama in 202 and resulted in Hannibal's defeat and in Carthage suing for peace. The peace treaty dictated by Rome stripped Carthage of all of its overseas territories and some of its African ones. An indemnity of 10,000 silver talents was to be paid over 50 years. Carthage was prohibited from waging war outside Africa, and in Africa only with Rome's express permission. Henceforth it was clear Carthage was politically subordinate to Rome. Rome used Carthaginian military activity against the Numidians as a pretext to declare war again in 149 BC starting the Third Punic War. In 146 BC the Romans stormed the city of Carthage, sacked it, slaughtered most of its population and completely demolished it.

It is a huge celebration and national holiday in Thailand and great fun. There is a party like atmosphere throughout the cities and many festivals and events taking place throughout the celebration.
The Songkran festival used to change dates based on the solar calendar. In recent years the date has been codified and the public holiday is always April 13 – 15 every year. Songkran day is April 13th. This is the day where Thai and Buddhist traditions are observed.
The Thai Water Festival, as Songkran is also known, can last longer than 3 days in areas like Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Pattaya. Some people even get started soaking people a little early, so be on the look out a day or two before the holiday officially begins.
The Songkran festival started out as the traditional Thai New Year’s celebration. It was based on the solar calendar and the date often fluctuated. In 1940, Thailand adopted January 1 as it’s official start to the New Year but the Songkran holiday continues to be celebrated as part of the cultural and Buddhist tradition of the country.
While most people are familiar sights of the water fights raging on the city streets and the festivities and revelries associated with today’s festival, the origins are from more stoic Buddhist traditions that date back hundreds of years and still practiced today.
It is a time of cleaning, washing away the bad luck, misdeeds, and misfortunes from the previous year and starting anew. The Thai’s pour scented water over the statues of Buddha and the shoulders of each other and on the hands of their elders in a symbolic gesture of this belief.
This tradition still continues is the homes and temples around Thailand. It’s only afterward that people take to the streets and start soaking each other with water and celebrating for days on end.
While any attire you don’t mind getting wet is appropriate, many people dress up for Songkran. The ‘Songkran Shirt’ is a colorful flower print reminiscent of Hawaiian shirts, and many people will be wearing them. Some take it to another level and get dressed up in costumes and masks.
You can expect to be splashed with water as soon as you start walking down the street. Another Songkran tradition is to wipe a white chalk mixture on people’s faces. It’s a symbolic nod to the chalk used by Buddhist monks for blessing. Don’t be surprised if someone comes up and smears some white goop on your face, though it is impolite for someone to do so without asking first.
You aren’t safe from getting wet anywhere unless you are locked in your hotel room, these are the best cities to celebrate the Thai Water Festival.
In Bangkok - Khao San Road and Silom are the epicenter for Songkran activities in Bangkok. Khao San Road is the backpacker ghetto and it is a drunken party with plenty of tourist on tourist soaking. There are many bars serving alcohol and DJ’s pumping out tunes.
Pattaya does Songkran like no other city in Thailand. When the celebration ends elsewhere, Pattaya carries on celebrating till April 19th, that’s a full week! Soi 6, 7, and 8 are popular spots. Bars will have large drums of water setup for people to reload their water guns, and many tourists will park themselves at the bars, drinking and having a good time as they soak passersby with water.
With bars lining almost every street, Pattaya is like one giant Songkran party. The festivities end on Wan Lai, which means ‘Flowing Day’. If you’ve had enough of being drenched, head over to Bang Saen beach where they craft amazing sand castles and sculptures.
Chiang Mai is probably the most popular spot for tourists to enjoy the Thailand Water Festival. The slow laid back atmosphere in a city surrounded by a moat filled with water make it an ideal location. The moat is drained shortly before the holiday begins and is filled with clean (‘ish) water as it is a major source for reloading buckets and water guns. The old city is where all the activity is and where you want to be.
In Phuket, Patong Beach is where the action is. Bangla and Beach roads in particular are the hot spots. Bangla Road is closed off to cars and people walk up and down dumping water on each other while being shot at with water guns from patrons at the bars lining the streets.

The main methods of attacking a Medieval Castle were:
Fire
Battering Rams
Ladders
Catapults
Mining
Siege
Fire
Fire was the best way to attack the early Motte and Bailey castles since they were made entirely of wood. The fire might be started by building a bonfire against the outer wooden fence (palisade) or, more usually, by archers shooting fire-arrows into the castle. As the fire spread through the castle those living inside would be forced to leave allowing the attackers to take them prisoner or kill them. This was one of the reasons why Motte and Bailey castles were soon replaced by Stone Keep castles. Fire has little effect on a stone castle.
Battering Ram
The thick stone walls of the Stone Keep castles were difficult for men to knock down. Although pickaxes could be used against castles with thinner walls, it would take a very long time to knock a hole through a castle with very thick walls. The battering ram was particularly useful since the weight of several men would be put behind it. This would make it a considerable force that could seriously weaken and possibly destroy doors or walls.
Medieval Castle Defense: Ladders
Ladders were used by those attacking a castle to climb over the walls and fight the castle inhabitants within the castle walls. However, ladders had the disadvantage of leaving the man climbing the ladder subject to attack by arrow, boiling water or oil, or by being thrown to the ground if the ladder was pushed away from the wall. To prevent this type of attack the Belfry or Siege Tower was developed.
Belfry
The Belfry was a large structure on wheels that could be pushed up to the castle walls. Ladders inside the Belfry allowed attackers to climb to the top under cover and get into the castle. Castle owners prevented this type of attack by piling earth up against the castle walls so that the Belfry, which was on wheels, could not be pushed near to the castle.
Medieval Castle Defense: Catapult
A variety of catapults or siege engines were developed during the Middle Ages to fire stones, fireballs or other objects such as dead sheep, cattle, or plague victims, at the castle walls or into the castle itself. This type of catapult works by twisting rope as tightly as possible so that it acts like elastic when the arm is released.
Medieval Castle Defense: Mining
A good way of attacking a stone castle was through mining. Attackers would dig a tunnel underground up to the castle walls, under the gatehouse if possible. They would then set a charge and make an explosion which would make the walls crumble and collapse. The advantage of mining was that the attack could not be seen by those living in the castle. However, if those inside the castle were aware that attackers were mining underground, they would often mine from the castle to meet the attackers underground and there would be a sword battle.
Medieval Castle Defense: Siege
Another good way of attacking a stone castle was by placing it under siege. Attackers would surround a castle with both men and catapults so that no one could enter or leave the castle. Sieges could last for months, usually until the inhabitants of the castle ran out of food and were starving. One of the castle owner’s main line of defense against siege was to send all women, children, old, weak and sick people out of the castle. This meant that only those strong enough to fight off attackers remained in the castle and that the food supply would last much longer.

If data shows that Europe's Schiaparelli lander crashed into the Red Planet on Wednesday, it will be the second failed attempt for Europe in 13 years.
Overall, almost half of all attempts to land on Mars since the 1960s have ended in disappointment.
A recap of surface-bound missions that missed the mark.
USSR - Russia
The Soviet Union (USSR) was the first to attempt to place a craft on Mars.
A launch failure spoiled its first bid in 1962, followed in 1971 with its Mars 2 lander becoming the first pile of man-made debris on the Red Planet.
Less than a week later, Mars 3 became the first craft to make a soft Mars landing, though contact was lost after mere seconds and the mission was chalked up as a partial failure. A small "walking" rover on board Mars 3 did not deploy.
Moscow tried again in 1973 with its Mars 6 and Mars 7 landers, but contact with the first was lost as it reached the surface, and the second never penetrated the Martian atmosphere.
Pre-touchdown communications were lost with two further would-be landers, Fobos 1 and Fobos 2, both launched in 1988.
The United States
After more than a decade of Soviet attempts, the US was successful on its first attempt—the Viking 1 and Viking 2 landers launched in 1975.
They were followed in 1996 by the Mars Pathfinder, a science station and base for the Sojourner rover—the first motorised robot to be operated by humans beyond the Earth or Moon. The only US failure was its Mars Polar Lander which failed to touch down in 1999.
It has subsequently placed three more rovers on the Red Planet: Spirit and Opportunity in 2003, and Curiosity in 2011. The latter two are still criss-crossing the alien Martian surface.
European Union
Europe's first attempt to land on Mars saw the British-built Beagle 2 lander disappear without trace after separating from its Mars Express mothership in 2003.
A NASA photo last year showed finally that the craft had touched down, but its battery-recharging solar panels failed to deploy and it was unable to communicate.
European Space Agency scientists are trying to establish the fate of their Schiaparelli lander, launched in March as a test run for a Mars rover due for launch in 2020.
Schiaparelli separated from its Trace Gas Orbiter mothership on Sunday but signal was lost just seconds before it was to touch down on Mars three days later.

Invented the reflecting telescope
The standard telescope of Newton's time, the refracting telescope, was not ideal. Its glass lenses focused the different colors inherent in light at different distances. This resulted, at the edges of any bright objects seen through the telescope, in colored fringes that rendered those objects slightly out of focus. Newton solved the "chromatic aberration" problem by using mirrors instead of lenses. His original reflecting telescope, which he built himself in 1668, was just six inches long. This modest device not only eliminated the colored fringes but magnified whatever it focused on by 40 times, which, as Newton noted at the time, "is more than any 6 foot Tube can do." After presenting his scope to the Royal Society, the then-unknown Newton was proposed for membership; he later served as its president for 24 years, until his death in 1727.
Proposed new theory of light and color
Not long after he donated his telescope to the Royal Society, Newton delivered a paper to that august body about his novel theory of light and colors. Using prisms and his usual very exacting experimental technique, Newton had discovered that sunlight is comprised of all the colors of the rainbow, which could not only be separated but recombined into white light. Though he made his experiments on light as early as 1666, when he was only 24 years old, he didn't publish his classic Optics, which summarized his findings on light and color, until 1704.
Discovered calculus
When Newton began to muse on the problem of the motion of the planets and what kept them in their orbits around the sun, he realized that the mathematics of the day weren't sufficient to the task. Properties such as direction and speed, by their very nature, were in a continuous state of flux, constantly changing with time and exhibiting varying rates of change. So he invented a new branch of mathematics, which he called the fluxions (later known as calculus). Calculus allowed him to draw tangents to curves, determine the lengths of curves, and solve other problems that classical geometry could not help him solve. Interestingly, Newton's masterwork, the Principia, doesn't include the calculus in the form that he'd invented years before, simply because he hadn't yet published anything about it.
Developed three laws of motion
Newton's Principia is difficult to comprehend on two levels, even for experts: in its original form, it is written in Latin, and it uses very challenging mathematics. Yet one thing that comes out very simply and very clearly to all is his three laws of motion:
Law of inertia: Every object persists in its state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line unless it is compelled to change that state by forces impressed upon it.
Law of acceleration: Force is equal to the change in momentum (mV) per change in time. For a constant mass, force equals mass times acceleration, F = ma.
Law of action and reaction: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Devised law of universal gravitation
Newton said shortly before his death that it was seeing an apple fall in his mother's garden that set him thinking "that the power of gravity ... was not limited to a certain distance from the earth but that this power must extend much farther than was usually thought. Why not as high as the moon ... and if so that must influence her motion and perhaps retain her in her orbit." This brainstorm (which some scholars suspect Newton may have invented late in life) ultimately led to his law of universal gravitation. The law says that all particles of matter in the universe attract every other particle, that gravitational attraction is a property of all matter. The law explained many things, from the orbits of the planets around the sun to the influence of the moon and sun on the tides. And it held sway as the accepted description of terrestrial and celestial mechanics for almost 200 years—until Einstein came along and rocked the boat with relativity.
Advanced early modern chemistry
Newton spent untold hours of his life practicing alchemy. Like other alchemists, he sought to turn base metals into gold, find a universal cure for disease, and secure the elixir of life, which promised perpetual youth and eternal life.

U.S. Energy Department Now Says Lab Leak Most Likely Origin of Covid-19 Pandemic, and FBI agrees. Rand Paul says Biden should declassify docs after Energy Department reversal. The Energy Department, which had been undecided on the origin of the pandemic, now joins the FBI in concluding the coronavirus likely spread due to a mishap at a Chinese laboratory, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a classified intelligence report provided to the White House and key members of Congress. The so-called "lab leak theory," according to which the virus came from a lab leak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in Wuhan, China, was widely dismissed as a conspiracy theory and "misinformation" by Democrats, major news outlets, scientists, and social media companies in the early stages of the pandemic.
Paul was hardly the only Republican lawmakers to call for answers and accountability following news of the Energy Department's assessment.
Congressional Republicans quickly took to Twitter, demanding apologies from those who dismissed the lab leak theory and for China to be held accountable.
The development, which was noted in an update to a 2021 document by Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines's office, prompted Paul to call for greater transparency.
"Classified documents leaked (they should be declassified!) showing scientists at DOE believe COVID leaked from Wuhan Lab," Paul tweeted, calling for greater transparency.
Beyond the FBI and Energy Department, the National Intelligence Council and four other agencies assess at "low confidence" that the COVID-19 pandemic originated due to natural transmission from an infected animal, while the CIA and another unnamed agency are undecided, according to the Wall Street Journal.
FBI Director Christopher Wray said the COVID-19 pandemic was likely caused by a lab leak in Wuhan, China.
"The FBI has for quite some time now assessed that the origins of the pandemic are most likely a potential lab incident in Wuhan," Wray told Fox News in an interview that aired Tuesday. "Here you are talking about a potential leak from a Chinese government-controlled lab."
"I will just make the observation that the Chinese government, it seems to me, has been doing its best to try to thwart and obfuscate the work here, the work that we're doing, the work that our U.S. government and close foreign partners are doing. And that's unfortunate for everybody," he added.
Wray said the FBI has specialists who focus on "the dangers of biological threats, which include things like novel viruses like COVID, and the concerns that they [are] in the wrong hands [of] some bad guys, a hostile nation state, a terrorist, a criminal."

The instantaneous release of energy from a relatively small volume of material can be viewed as an explosive event. This is achieved by changes in the chemical composition of the solid, liquid or gas, and the release of chemical energy. Depending on initiation conditions, charge geometry and chemical composition, this reaction can accelerate until a steady value (detonation) has been achieved, or decelerate (deflagration) and eventually die out. The distinction between true detonation and deflagration is not crucial at this stage, as both processes can lead to release of very large amounts of energy in a small fraction of a second. Most incidents involving dust or vapour cloud explosions (flour, sawdust, gasoline vapours, natural gas, etc.) involve only rapid combustion and not detonation. Most commercial explosives such as ammonium nitrate (AN)-fuel oil mixtures exhibit non-ideal behaviour, in that their sensitivity and severity of explosion falls off rapidly with decreasing diameter and lack of confinement. In this discussion, confined to condensed phase explosions, the words ‘detonation’ and ‘explosion’ are used synonymously and no distinction is made between commercial and military explosives.
IN both Great Britain and the United States the explosives industry has formed one of the most important nuclei round which the powerful chemical combinations now existing in these two countries have developed. A history of the British explosives industry, edited by E. A. B. Hodgetts, was published in 1909, under the direction of the Explosives Section of the seventh International Congress of Applied Chemistry; the present publication deals with the history of the explosives industry in the United States and Canada, and to some extent in Mexico and South America. It has been written and published under the auspices of the Institute of Makers of Explosives, and the material has been collected from pioneer workers who are still living, from the records and archives of large powder companies, and “for the earlier history, more particularly the origins of the black powder business, data have been found in colonial records and local histories of towns, counties, and states.”

The planetary odometer turned on March 21, with the latest batch of 65 exoplanets – planets outside our immediate solar family – added to the NASA Exoplanet Archive. The archive records exoplanet discoveries that appear in peer-reviewed, scientific papers, and that have been confirmed using multiple detection methods or by analytical techniques.
The 5,000-plus planets found so far include small, rocky worlds like Earth, gas giants many times larger than Jupiter, and “hot Jupiters” in scorchingly close orbits around their stars. There are “super-Earths,” which are possible rocky worlds bigger than our own, and “mini-Neptunes,” smaller versions of our system’s Neptune. Add to the mix planets orbiting two stars at once and planets stubbornly orbiting the collapsed remnants of dead stars.
“It’s not just a number,” said Jessie Christiansen, science lead for the archive and a research scientist with the NASA Exoplanet Science Institute at Caltech in Pasadena. “Each one of them is a new world, a brand-new planet. I get excited about every one because we don’t know anything about them.”
We do know this: Our galaxy likely holds hundreds of billions of such planets. The steady drumbeat of discovery began in 1992 with strange new worlds orbiting an even stranger star. It was a type of neutron star known as a pulsar, a rapidly spinning stellar corpse that pulses with millisecond bursts of searing radiation. Measuring slight changes in the timing of the pulses allowed scientists to reveal planets in orbit around the pulsar.
Finding just three planets around this spinning star essentially opened the floodgates, said Alexander Wolszczan, the lead author on the paper that, 30 years ago, unveiled the first planets to be confirmed outside our solar system.
“If you can find planets around a neutron star, planets have to be basically everywhere,” Wolszczan said. “The planet production process has to be very robust.”
Wolszczan, who still searches for exoplanets as a professor at Penn State, says we’re opening an era of discovery that will go beyond simply adding new planets to the list. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), launched in 2018, continues to make new exoplanet discoveries. But soon powerful next-generation telescopes and their highly sensitive instruments, starting with the recently launched James Webb Space Telescope, will capture light from the atmospheres of exoplanets, reading which gases are present to potentially identify tell-tale signs of habitable conditions.
The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, expected to launch in 2027, will make new exoplanet discoveries using a variety of methods. The ESA (European Space Agency) mission ARIEL, launching in 2029, will observe exoplanet atmospheres; a piece of NASA technology aboard, called CASE, will help zero in on exoplanet clouds and hazes.
“To my thinking, it is inevitable that we’ll find some kind of life somewhere – most likely of some primitive kind,” Wolszczan said. The close connection between the chemistry of life on Earth and chemistry found throughout the universe, as well as the detection of widespread organic molecules, suggests detection of life itself is only a matter of time, he added.

In the rare instances when the ownership of slaves by free Negroes is acknowledged in the history books, justiJcation centers on the claim that black slave masters were simply individuals who purchased the freedom of a spouse or child from a white slaveholder and had been unable to legally manumit them. Although this did indeed happen at times, it is a misrepresentation of the majority of instances, one which is debunked by records of the period on blacks who owned slaves. These include individuals such as Justus Angel and Mistress L. Horry, of Colleton District, South Carolina, who each owned 84 slaves in 1830. In fact, in 1830 a fourth of the free Negro slave masters in South Carolina owned 10 or more slaves; eight owning 30 or more.

Approximately 4 million years ago, the first Australopithecus evolved: the first members of the Hominina subtribe (a taxonomic classification more specific than family but less specific than genus). Shortly thereafter, the first evidence of stone tool use appears: presently at 3.4-to-3.7 million years ago.
A critical evolutionary step happened a little more than 2 million years ago, as our hominid ancestors faced food shortages. One evolutionarily successful approach was to develop stronger jaws, which gave us the capability to eat foods (like nuts) that were otherwise inaccessible. But another approach was also successful: to develop weaker jaws and larger brains, enabling us to access the food.
While both groups survived for a time, the larger-brained group was more adaptable to changes, and they continued to survive. This is the evolutionary path that we think led to the development of the genus Homo, which first arose about 2.5 million years ago. Homo habilis, known colloquially as "handy man," had larger brains than their Australopithecus counterparts and displayed far more widespread tool use.
About 1.9 million years ago, Homo erectus evolved. This human ancestor not only walked fully upright, but had much larger brains than Homo habilis: nearly twice as large, on average. Homo erectus became the first direct human ancestor to leave Africa, and the first to display evidence of using fire. Homo habilis was likely driven to extinction more than a million years ago, as was the last Australopithecus.
Across the world, new examples of the genus Homo emerged, including Homo antecessor in Europe (which may be an evolved habilis or erectus, or an early form of heidelbergensis) about 1.2 million years ago, followed by Homo heidelbergensis some 600,000 years ago. Approximately 700,000 years ago, the earliest evidence for cooking appears; about 500,000 years ago, the first evidence for clothing appears.
#history #interestingfacts #earth
Approximately 300,000 years ago, the first Homo sapiens — anatomically modern humans — arose alongside our other hominid relatives. It is unknown whether we descended directly from Homo erectus, heidelbergensis, or antecessor, although Neanderthals, which came slightly later at 240,000 years ago, most certainly came from Homo heidelbergensis. Modern speech is thought to have arisen almost as soon as Homo sapiens did.
It took 13.8 billion years of cosmic history for the first human beings to arise, and we did so relatively recently: just 300,000 years ago. 99.998% of the time that passed since the Big Bang had no human beings at all; our entire species has only existed for the most recent 0.002% of the Universe. Yet, in that short time, we've managed to figure out the entire cosmic story that led to our existence. Fortunately, the story won't end with us, as it's still being written.

On Dec. 5, 2022, a team at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s National Ignition Facility conducted the first controlled fusion experiment in history to achieve fusion ignition. Also known as scientific energy breakeven, the experiment produced more energy from fusion than the laser energy used to drive it. The achievement is a major scientific breakthrough that was decades in the making, and will provide unprecedented capability to support the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Stockpile Stewardship Program and provide invaluable insights into the prospects of clean fusion energy.
Nuclear fusion is a process in which atomic nuclei combine to form a heavier nucleus, releasing a large amount of energy in the process, according to Einstein’s famous equation, E=mc^2.
Fusion ignition means the fusion procedure produced more energy than it consumed. From an input of 2.05 megajoules, it released over 50 per cent energy - 3.15 megajoules.
What is Nuclear fusion?
Nuclear fusion is a process in which atomic nuclei combine to form a heavier nucleus, releasing a large amount of energy in the process. This energy is released because of the conversion of a small amount of mass into energy, according to Einstein’s famous equation, E=mc^2.
What is Nuclear fission?
Nuclear fusion and nuclear fission are two different types of nuclear reactions that release energy.
In a fission reaction, the nucleus of an atom is bombarded with a neutron, which causes it to split into two or more smaller nuclei. This releases a large amount of energy, which can be harnessed for practical purposes.
Key differences between nuclear fusion and nuclear fission:
1. Nuclear fusion reactions release much more energy than nuclear fission reactions. The energy released by fusion reactions is several times greater than the energy released by fission reactions, a report from the US's Office of Nuclear Energy states.
2. Nuclear fusion reactions can be fuelled by lighter elements, such as hydrogen and helium, which are abundant on Earth. Deuterium can be extracted from seawater, and tritium can be derived from naturally abundant lithium, the International Atomic Energy Agency states. Nuclear fission reactions require heavier elements, such as uranium or plutonium, which are not as abundant.
3. Nuclear fusion reactions are generally considered to be safer than nuclear fission reactions. Fusion reactions do not produce the long-lived radioactive waste that fission reactions do, and the fuel for fusion reactions is not as susceptible to being used for weapons.
4. While nuclear fusion has the potential to be a virtually limitless and clean source of energy, achieving controlled nuclear fusion on Earth has proven to be a technically challenging task. Nuclear fission, on the other hand, has been harnessed for practical purposes for decades, and is currently the primary source of nuclear energy worldwide.
Why is it hard to produce nuclear fusion?
Achieving controlled nuclear fusion on Earth has proven to be a technically challenging task for several reasons:
1. Nuclear fusion reactions occur at extremely high temperatures, typically on the order of millions of degrees Celsius. At these temperatures, the atomic nuclei are stripped of their electrons, creating a plasma, which is a state of matter similar to gas but with a much higher energy level. It is difficult to contain and control a plasma at these high temperatures, and this has been a major challenge in developing practical fusion reactions.
2. In order for a fusion reaction to occur, the plasma must be confined for a sufficient amount of time to allow the atomic nuclei to collide and fuse together. This requires the use of a magnetic field to hold the plasma in place. However, the plasma is constantly trying to expand and escape the magnetic field, and this has been a major challenge in developing practical fusion reactions.
3. Another challenge in achieving controlled nuclear fusion is that the reactions are not very efficient. Only a small fraction of the fuel used in a fusion reaction is actually consumed, and the rest is lost as heat. This makes it difficult to achieve a net gain in energy from a fusion reaction.
4. The materials used in a fusion reactor must be able to withstand the extreme temperatures and radiation of the fusion reaction. This has been a major challenge in developing practical fusion reactions, as the materials used must be able to withstand the harsh conditions without degrading over time.

Bringing samples of Mars to Earth for future study would happen in several steps with multiple spacecraft, and in some ways, in a synchronized manner. This short animation features key moments of the Mars Sample Return campaign: from landing on Mars and securing the sample tubes to launching them off the surface and ferrying them back to Earth.

Around the edge of the two cavernous regions, the dust that appears green is slightly cooler. Red indicates cold dust that reaches temperatures of about minus 440 Fahrenheit (minus 260 Celsius). A cold ribbon of dust starts near the bottom right of the image and threads throughout the nebula. Red and orange filaments like these are where dust condenses and forms new stars. Over time, these filaments may produce new giant stars that will once again reshape the region.
These images were captured by the now-retired Herschel Space Telescope, an ESA observatory, NASA’s retired Spitzer Space Telescope, and NASA’s Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), which now operates under the moniker NEOWISE. Spitzer and WISE were both managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of Caltech, in Southern California.

Just as the Earth exerts a gravitational pull, the moon also exerts a gravitational pull on the Earth. The moon pulls on the Earth and slows down the Earth’s rotation. The moon’s pull creates a bulge near the Earth’s equator, which means there is a lower level of water at the poles.
The Moon’s gravity causes the oceans on our planet to rise and fall. As the water moves, there is slight friction between the moving water and the spinning Earth. This friction causes the Earth’s rotation to slow slightly. If there was no moon, then the water might spread across the planet equally and reduce the amount of friction.
This means that the earth would not slow, which then means that the hours of our days would change. Suddenly, without the moon, our days would last between 6 and 12 hours, rather than the 24 hours we experience now. If our days became this short, then we would have significantly more days in our calendar year. Instead of 365 days in a year, we would have over a thousand.
Since the moon affects the altitude and movement of Earth’s water, our ocean tides would shrink. High tide occurs where the ocean bulges toward the moon, or where the moon pulls the ocean towards it. On the opposite side of our planet, the ocean bulges away from the moon, creating another high tide. The low tides occur on either side of the bulges. Remember that the Earth is rotating, so high tide becomes low tide as the Earth turns.
Scientists suggest that without the moon, tides would be 1/3 of the size they are now. High tides would be much smaller than they are now, and low tides would be even lower. This is because the sun would be influencing the tides, not the moon; however, the sun has a weaker pull, which would decrease the tides.
The change in the Earth’s rotational speed and a change in the Earth’s tilt would also affect the Earth’s weather patterns. If the moon slows down the Earth’s rotation, then the moon also affects the wind and wind speeds on our planet. Without the moon, we would see an increase in wind speeds. Winds could become much faster and much stronger without the moon.
Additionally, we might see a change entirely in seasons. The moon affects the angle of the Earth’s tilt. Currently, the Earth sits at a 23.5-degree tilt. This means our planet leans slightly to one side as it sits in space. The tilt creates what we know as seasons and changing weather. Without the pull of the moon, this tilt would change. Either the tilt would become extreme, leading to extreme and severe seasons, or the tilt would decrease, and we would see almost no seasons at all.
The moon influences life as we know it on Earth. It influences our oceans, weather, and the hours in our days. Without the moon, tides would fall, nights would be darker, seasons would change, and the length of our days would alter.

- From expanding campers to easy-to-assemble houses, these tiny homes will make you want to downsize. As space gets harder to find and house prices rise, people are looking to small homes as a solution to the housing crisis! These 13 designs prove that size does not matter. The Pros and Cons of a Tiny Home - The so-called “Tiny Home Movement” means different things for different people. Some homebuyers like the financial advantages of owning a tiny property. There’s less mortgage debt or often no housing debt at all. And reducing housing expenses lets people save for other goals, like retirement or a kid’s college education.
Others enjoy the “hassle free” factor of tiny homes, of not having to fix, maintain and clean as much, or not needing to furnish so many rooms.
And still other tiny home dwellers say their biggest joy is in the freedom they get – freedom from having so much stuff cluttering their homes; freedom from worrying about expensive housing bills; and even the freedom to pick up and travel whenever they want without being overly concerned about their homes while they are away.
In fact, some tiny homeowners actually travel with their homes, since some of these properties are mobile – and set on wheels.
Among the potential drawbacks, most tiny homes – by their very nature – don’t offer a spare bedroom for overnights guests. So if you have family or friends over for a visit, there probably won’t be a place for them to stay the night.
While many tiny home residents say they love their comfy quarters, there is a possibility, of course, of going stir crazy or feeling a bit too cramped. That can happen, though, in any almost any size home.
Lastly, there may be some financial or legal issues to address.
For example, you might have to get special approval from a city or town in order to build a tiny home, since many municipalities actually have a minimum building size, and a tiny home may not qualify.
Additionally, some banks may not offer mortgages on a tiny home, so you might need to come up with the cash to buy or build a tiny home outright.
Because tiny homes are so affordable – usually around $20,000 to $60,000, depending on location, size and other factors – most buyers do purchase or build these properties using cash, without a home loan, according to Fivecoat-Campbell.

The bad: There is so little atmosphere that it might as well not exist. About 19km above the Earth, pilots reach the Armstrong limit, where water boils at the temperature of the human body, and the atmosphere is about 6 percent that of Earth's surface. The Martian atmosphere is about one-tenth the value of the Armstrong limit. An exposed human on the surface would die within a few dozen seconds. The recent discovery that solar wind has stripped the Martian atmosphere away over billions of years has also dealt a blow to hopes that the world might be terraformed by releasing carbon dioxide trapped in Martian rocks.
The Moon
The good: Proximity. Humans can get to the Moon within a few days, making travel and resupply by far the easiest of any off-world location. Scientists also believe that ample amounts of water ice exist at the lunar poles, providing a hefty source of drinking water, radiation shielding, and rocket propellant. The moon's surface contains valuable minerals, such as silicon, which could be used to make solar cells, and Helium-3, which might be a good source of energy. It is also plausible that large lava tubes exist just beneath the Moon's surface, which could be large enough for human cities.
The bad: The Moon has no atmosphere, of course, making surface activities hazardous and leaving astronauts vulnerable to radiation. The Apollo astronauts, too, found the Moon's dusty surface was difficult to contend with when they brought the dust back into their spacecraft.
Titan
The good: Energy, and lots of it. The great lakes of Saturn's moon Titan are filled mostly with pure methane, providing a near limitless supply of power for human activities. The surface pressure is about 1.4 times that of Earth, too, which means it is one of the few places in the Solar System where humans wouldn't need a pressure suit (aside from an air mask) to walk outside. The nitrogen, methane, and ammonia in Titan's atmosphere could be used as fertilizer to cultivate crops in greenhouses, and there may also be subsurface water. The thick atmosphere would provide good radiation shielding.
The bad: Temperature and distance. The surface of Titan is about -180 degrees Celsius (so no pressure suit, but LOTS of layers of warm clothing). And since this moon orbits Saturn, it is the farthest of any of these options, requiring the better part of a decade for humans to reach with current propulsion systems.
Venus
The good: An atmosphere! We're not talking about the surface of the planet, where the crushing atmospheric pressure is equivalent to about 900 meters below the surface of Earth's oceans, and the temperature is a boiling 462 degrees Celsius, on average. We’re talking about 50km above the surface, where the atmospheric pressure is equivalent to that on Earth and temperatures range from 0 degrees to 50 degrees Celsius. Moreover, the remaining Venusian atmosphere provides radiation shielding. A human might sun oneself on an open-air deck wearing only a breathing mask. NASA has already done some preliminary work studying a floating airship concept with its Project HAVOC.
The bad: When it rains, it rains sulfuric acid. This would damage solar panels and the airships themselves, not to mention any humans caught unawares out in it. The other problem is resupply of water or metals.
Callisto
The good: Callisto is not as famous as some of the Jovian moons, such as Europa, but it probably would be the best one to live on. Comparable in size to Mercury, it is the most distant from Jupiter of the planet's four large moons, which means it receives less radiation from the gas giant. Spacecraft have observed bright patches of ice on the moon's rocky surface, and deeper inside the planet there’s probably a salty ocean that is 50 to 200km deep.
The bad: Callisto is still several years of travel from Earth. The moon has only a tenuous atmosphere, so it would not be unlike living on the surface of Earth's own Moon. And while the radiation levels are lower than Jupiter's other moons, they are still higher than Titan and some of the other alternatives. Solar panels would be of limited use for colonists as Callisto receives only about 1/25th of the solar energy that Earth's Moon does.

Sensor in the brain tells the body that ‘we’re great here so grow quickly’, scientists say - The mystery of why human beings have rocketed in height over the past century has been explained by the discovery of a sensor in the brain, scientists have said. “Average height in the UK rose by 3.9in (10cm) during the 20th Century,” increasing by “up to 7.8in in other countries as nutritional health improved”, said the BBC.
“But exactly how this happens has never been understood,” the broadcaster added.
Now, a study published in Nature has found that a brain receptor called MC3R is the pivotal link between food, puberty and growth.
According to Professor Stephen O’Rahilly, a researcher at the University of Cambridge and one of the study’s authors, the receptor essentially “tells the body we’re great here, we’ve got lots of food, so grow quickly, have puberty soon and make lots of babies”.
“It’s not just magic,” he told the BBC. “We have the complete wiring diagram for how it happens.”
The study, which also involved experts at Queen Mary University of London, the University of Bristol, the University of Michigan and Vanderbilt University, also found that when the “receptor doesn’t function at its optimum” people “can be shorter and start puberty later”, Metro said.
“Using the genetic make-up of 500,000 volunteers,” the paper added, researchers found “that children with gene mutations that affect the brain receptor were all shorter and lighter in weight than others”.
“There is an awful lot about the brain we still do not know”, said The Mirror, suggesting that the study “could lead to further development of drugs for children with delayed growth and puberty starting much later.
“More understanding of the receptor won’t mean that we can make ourselves taller,” the paper added, explaining how “that all still depends on genes”. However, “it could help people with chronic illnesses who need to build up muscle”.
O’Rahilly agreed, telling the BBC that “future research should investigate if drugs that selectively activate the MC3R might help redirect calories into muscle and other lean tissues, with the prospect of improving the physical functionality of such patients”.
According to Business Insider, the Netherlands is home to the world’s tallest people, with an average height of five feet eight inches. The tallest man in the world is Sultan Kosen, from Turkey, who “clocks in at 251cm”, which equates to eight feet two and a half inches, the site added.

As the fly eats, it's usually also pooping—and if it's female, possibly laying eggs as well. Flies really are an absolute bonanza of disgustingness.
All of this would be gross, but ultimately harmless, if flies only ate soup. But they're opportunists. They eat rotting garbage and they eat animal feces, and in doing so they consume loads of pathogens.
"House flies are the movers of any disgusting pathogenic microorganism you can think of," Jeff Scott, an entomologist at Cornell University, told the Daily Mail. "Anything that comes out of an animal, such as bacteria and viruses, house flies can take from that waste and deposit on your sandwich."
Experts estimate that adult houseflies can transmit more than 100 different diseases and parasites, from Salmonella and tuberculosis to tapeworms.
Does this mean we should immediately throw out any food a fly has touched? Probably.
According to research initiated at Penn State Eberly College of Science and in collaboration with the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and other international institutions , houseflies tend to harbor pathogens on their legs, meaning even a brief touchdown on your tuna melt could very conceivably transmit any number of worrisome bacteria in an instant. It's better to keep picnic foods sealed until they're needed or to ask for a new dish if your local restaurant has any unsolicited, winged guests lurking around.

Mystery Of What Triggered The Last Ice Age May Have Been Solved - Two mysteries have been a head-scratcher for many paleoclimate experts: Where did the last ice age's ice sheets come from, and how did they grow so fast? A new study published in Nature Geoscience may have solved these mysteries, proposing an explanation. These findings could also be applied to other historic glacial periods.
The last glacial cycle began 116,000 years ago, and an enormous ice sheet covered the Northern Hemisphere. However, these sheets only took 10,000 years to grow and merge, which was surprising to scientists.
Scientists have previously struggled to explain the extensive ice sheets that covered the milder Northern Europe and Scandinavia – the warm water brought up by the North Atlantic Current should have made Scandinavia largely ice-free.
"The problem is we don't know where those ice sheets (in Scandinavia) came from and what caused them to expand in such a short amount of time," said Marcus Lofverstrom, lead author, in a statement.
The authors of the study developed a complex Earth-system model called the Community Earth System Model. This model could recreate early climate conditions from the recent glacial period in high spatial detail
The researchers found that ocean gateways in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago were vital in controlling the North Atlantic climate. This gateway then helped decide whether the ice sheets in Scandinavia grew or not. The models revealed that as long as the Canadian Arctic Archipelago remained open, the Northern Hemisphere was cooled sufficiently enough by the Earth’s orbital configuration to allow ice sheets to build up in Northern Canada and Siberia.
The research team also explored whether the marine ice sheets obstructed the waterways in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Normally, fresh Arctic and North Pacific waster is routed through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago – in this scenario, it was actually diverted east of Greenland. The diversion caused weakening and freshening of the North Atlantic deep circulation, cooler conditions in Scandinavia, and sea ice expansion.
"Using both climate model simulations and marine sediment analysis, we show that ice forming in northern Canada can obstruct ocean gateways and divert water transport from the Arctic into the North Atlantic," Lofverstrom said, "and that in turn leads to a weakened ocean circulation and cold conditions off the coast of Scandinavia, which is sufficient to start growing ice in that region."
"These findings are supported by marine sediment records from the North Atlantic, which show evidence of glaciers in northern Canada several thousand years before the European side," said Diane Thompson, study author. "The sediment records also show compelling evidence of a weakened deep ocean circulation before the glaciers form in Scandinavia, similar to our modeling results."
Overall, the experiments may suggest that the marine ice formation in Northern Canada was necessary for Scandinavian glaciers to form.
"It is possible that the mechanisms we identified here apply to every glacial period, not just the most recent one," Lofverstrom said. "It may even help explain more short-lived cold periods such as the Younger Dryas cold reversal (12,900 to 11,700 years ago) that punctuated the general warming at the end of the last ice age."

How to keep clothes from shrinking - Incorporating the following laundry tips into your routine may help prevent your family’s favorite clothes from shrinking.
1. Check fabric care labels before you buy & before doing laundry
The first step to preventing your clothes from shrinking is to follow the laundry instructions on your garment’s care tag. Check the care tag not only before laundering, but also before purchasing new clothing so you know what to expect.
Checking the care tag for fabric type can give you an idea if the garment is prone to shrinking, such as cotton or linen, or if garments are already “pre-shrunk.” Some garments may be deemed as “dry clean only” and shouldn’t be cleaned in a washer. In addition, be mindful to pay attention to the recommended water temperature, laundry cycle and drying instructions. As a general rule, washing clothes in cold, gentle cycles with low-heat drying can help prevent your garments from shrinking.

2. Use cold water and the proper wash cycles
If you only remember one rule about how to avoid shrinking clothes, remember this: keep it cool. Clothes are much more likely to shrink when exposed to hot water or high dryer settings.
Washing clothes in cold water goes a long way toward preserving the “off-the-rack” size. Avoiding heavy duty cycles, fast spins and high-heat drying can also prevent shrinkage. Use delicate cycles instead, and place delicate clothes in a mesh laundry bag for added protection. When drying, consider a low-heat or air dry setting. When in doubt, always follow the instructions on your garment’s care tag.
A person selecting dryer settings.
3. Select the tumble dry or air dry setting
Drying your clothing on a tumble dry or air dry setting can help keep clothes from shrinking by minimizing wear to the fabric fibers. Your clothing’s care tag will provide the optimal temperature and dryer settings to help avoid shrinkage.
4. Avoid overdrying laundry
Overdrying and exposing your clothes to long cycles of high heat can damage the fabric and cause clothes to shrink. Instead, opt for tumble or air dry settings in shorter intervals in order to preserve your clothing.
A teal blouse air drying on a hanger.
5. Try air drying your clothes
Does air drying clothes help prevent shrinking? Yes. Instead of using your dryer, consider air drying your clothes for a fresh, natural drying alternative that helps prevent your clothes from shrinking.

In one viral clip, a young girl can be seen running up behind a cleric walking down a nearly empty street and knocking his turban off. While the girl did not stop to look back and continued running, the cleric was seen stooping to pick up his turban.
"Removing the turbans of clerics has turned into an act of protest after regime killed hundreds of innocent protesters," the caption of the video read.
In another clip, a cleric was seen picking up his turban from the middle of the road. "Removing the turbans of clerics has turned into a daily routine for Iranian teenagers," the post's caption read. AlinejadMasih: One of the girl says; in Iran mullahs behead and execute us if we say NO to forced hijab or forced Islam, we just knock their turbans to show our anger.
Hundreds of people have been reportedly killed by Iranian security forces during the protests which began following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died while in the custody of Iran's morality police after being arrested for not wearing her hijab properly.
However, despite authorities warning protesters they should leave the streets, demonstrations have shown no sign of abating. Social media images have shown schoolgirls tearing up pictures of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the late founder of the 1979 Islamic revolution Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and burning their veils.
Students in several universities in Tehran and other Iranian cities have also been protesting for weeks since Ms Amini's death. They have been chanting anti-regime slogans for which they have been reportedly killed in violent protests which have rocked the core of the Islamic rule in Iran.

Give five back blows. Stand to the side and just behind a choking adult. For a child, kneel down behind. Place your arm across the person's chest to support the person's body. Bend the person over at the waist to face the ground. Strike five separate times between the person's shoulder blades with the heel of your hand.
Give five abdominal thrusts. If back blows don't remove the stuck object, give five abdominal thrusts, also known as the Heimlich maneuver.
Alternate between five blows and five thrusts until the blockage is dislodged.
Some sources only teach the abdominal thrust. It's OK not to use back blows if you haven't learned the back-blow technique. Both approaches are acceptable for adults and children older than age 1.
To give abdominal thrusts to someone else:
Stand behind the person. For a child, kneel down behind. Place one foot slightly in front of the other for balance. Wrap your arms around the waist. Tip the person forward slightly.
Make a fist with one hand. Put it just above the person's navel.
Grasp the fist with the other hand. Press into the stomach, also called the abdomen, with a quick, upward thrust — as if trying to lift the person up. For a child, use gentle yet firm pressure to avoid damaging the internal organs.
Give five abdominal thrusts. Check if the blockage has been removed. Repeat as needed.
If you're the only rescuer, give back blows and abdominal thrusts first. Then call 911 or your local emergency number for help. If another person is there, have that person call for help while you give first aid.
If the person becomes unconscious, start standard cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with chest compressions and rescue breaths.
If the person is pregnant or if you can't get your arms around the stomach, give chest thrusts:
Put your hands at the base of the breastbone, just above the joining of the lowest ribs.
Press hard into the chest with a quick thrust. This is the same action as the Heimlich maneuver.
Repeat until the blockage is removed from the airway.
To clear the airway of an unconscious person:
Lower the person onto the floor, with the back on the floor and arms to the sides.
Clear the airway. If you can see the object, reach a finger into the mouth to sweep out the object. Never finger sweep if you can't see the object. You risk pushing the blockage deeper into the airway. This is very risky with young children.
Begin CPR if the person still doesn't respond. If the airway is still blocked, use chest compressions such as those that are used in CPR to remove the stuck object. Only use two rescue breaths per cycle. Recheck the mouth regularly for the object.
To clear the airway of a choking infant younger than age 1:
Sit and hold the infant facedown on your forearm. Rest your forearm on your thigh. Hold the infant's chin and jaw to support the head. Place the head lower than the trunk.
Thump the infant gently but firmly five times on the middle of the back. Use the heel of your hand. Point your fingers up so that you don't hit the back of the infant's head. Gravity and the back thumps should release the blockage.
Turn the infant faceup on your forearm if breathing hasn't started. Rest your arm on your thigh. Place the infant's head lower than the trunk.
Give five gentle but firm chest compressions with your fingers. Place two fingers just below the nipple line. Press down about 1 1/2 inches. Let the chest rise between each compression.
Repeat the back thumps and chest compressions if breathing doesn't start. Call for emergency medical help.
Begin infant CPR if the airway is clear but the infant doesn't start breathing.
If you're alone and choking:
Call 911 or your local emergency number right away. Then, give yourself abdominal thrusts, also called the Heimlich maneuver, to remove the stuck object.
Place a fist slightly above your navel.
Grasp your fist with the other hand.
Bend over a hard surface. A countertop or chair will do.
Shove your fist inward and upward.
To prepare yourself for these situations, learn the Heimlich maneuver and CPR in a certified first-aid training course.
