I have this problem where I will hang on to something until the bitter end. Something that's so broken, has been fixed a million times, barely works, causes me a lot of grief, yet I won't throw it out. Hence, hoard. Well, sometimes. On the other hand, when something is totally done, then I will happily get rid of it, after taking all of the good bits and adding them to the hoard.It's well-known that my mower is a perfect example. It's been problematic since day 1, the previous owners never took care of it then, and things excalated from there. That mower was ALWAYS hard to start, since I originally got it back in 2012. Everything on it has broken. it causes me a lot of grief. It doesn't run right. It's problematic, to say the absolute least. Yet I hang on to it. Why? Because I can still get it going, it still barely works.Now, if a better offer comes along, I'll definitely go for that. Extrapolating on the mower example, I had a working mower, it was a Murray brand one. It came with the house when I bought it. It was also problematic, but it got me by. When the ghetto-fabulous mower came around, I was especially interested since it is self-propelled, something the old Murray mower didn't have. Despite the problems getting it started, once going, it was indeed better than what I had. The old mower fell into disuse and then wouldn't run anymore, it also suffered from a bad primer bulb. That was eventually gotten rid of.Sometimes, I can't see through this problem to help myself. An obvious solution would be to buy a new mower. But I couldn't see myself doing that since this one still sort of works. What I need is an intervention. A better offer to come along.I had this problem in the past with my old Brinkmann barbecue. Over the years it got worse and worse and we ended up wondering each time if China was going to let us eat that day. It's absolutely pathetic.I would not be surprised to learn that after "work", that dark blouse went to the grocery part of the store, got a whole bunch of ice cream, went to the register to pay with EBT and WIC for her 7 kids, all without a particular father, and then hopped into her Cadillac Escalade and drove off. What's NOT wrong with this picture? And I think the more important question is, why doesn't anybody else see that, or simply turn a blind eye to it?

I had to go back! But this time, I had more time out there. Wif and I took a ride in, stopped at a local restaurant we used to frequent, the owner remembered us even though it's been almost 20 years.Then we hit the store, found all kinds of wonderful NON-NATIONAL BRANDS, which might be great products in other countries, but we wouldn't know. Regardless, everything looked good, had a great time out there, and got the prize--the pickles from The Pickle People. Incidentally, they were voted Best Pickle on Lawn Guyland once again for 2024! Nobody else even compares! I've been eating their pickles for nearly 40 years.That particular store used to be a FoodTown years ago, and anyone from that town remembers when it was. The company still exists and has other locations, but this one was sold. Interestingly, there were some architechtural elements that have remained untouched for years, and were exactly as I remember. TRY THESE TIPS Before You Call Your Sprinkler Guy!! jaykay18 2024-05-14 | Originally recorded May 1, 2024.Portions recorded April 30, 2024.I sone of the zones on your sprinkler system not firing? This can be caused by a number of different factors. Go from the source of the water to the end where the heads are to diagnose:1. Wiring or timer issue. If the wires aren't connected or have come loose, it can't supply power to the valve. It's also possible the timer may be faulty. You can swap wires on a zone that is working properly for the troublesome one to test. Or, it could be a bad connection in the sprinkler box in the ground where the valves are.2. Circuit breaker/fuse blown. My particular system has a circuit breaker. If that blows, then you will only have zones up to the trouble zone one time before resetting.3. Valve issue. This can be a faulty valve, faulty solenoid on the valve, or bad diaphragm. You can untwist the solenoid 1/4 to 1/2 turn and see if water starts to flow. If so, it's a problem with the valve.4. If water is indeed flowing (you can hear it or your water meter may have a visual indication), but water is not coming out of the heads, there may be a piping issue. I recommend walking around barefoot, after some time, water should start pooling up, giving you can indication of where the problem may lie.5. Very low water pressure. Check at a sink to verify it's normal.6. Stuck heads. If all of the heads are stuck down, water will flow but not spray out. This was the problem I had. I was able to pry up the last head on the zone and it sprayed normally. To fix the problem, I pushed down sharply on that head. It acts like a plunger, and forces water back at high pressure to the other heads, forcing them to pop up.This video only concentrates on the last problem listed, but I go through all of the diagnostic steps with you. Playing With The Primer Bulb & Governor Return Spring On The Mower jaykay18 2024-05-11 | Originally recorded May 6, 2024.I need to get this old pig running properly. The primer bulb hasn't worked right since the first one broke. I took it all apart again, double checked absolutely everything, replaced the retainer ring with the old one in case there were differences between them in tolerance. The end result, instead of pressing the primer 3 times, it takes more like 20. That's no better or worse than before. I can live with that.I bought a new governor return spring. Unfortunately, this spring was of such poor quality, and the guage of it so small, it wasn't going to even hold its shape, much less do it's job. I returned that and got my money back. Put the old spring back on, bent it as best I could. The engine still surges up and down, or hunts for proper idle. But after running for a few minutes, it smooths out. So now it's kind of like an old car that you need to warm up for a few minutes before it will run properly.End result is that I'm no better or worse off than I was before. You may wish to turn the zone on and off a few times to verify the head continues to work. Old War Stories With Uncle Jay - Oceanography Report Fiasco jaykay18 2024-05-05 | Originally recorded March 12, 2024.When I was in my senior year of High School in 1997, I had a lot of "electives" to take. I did all the heavier classes earlier in High School, so I had to fill my schedule with classes that I was never going to use--a time waster year.I took Oceanography. The teacher gave the class an ultimatum at the end of the year. Final project was to write a "book" about plants and animals that would be found in particular body of water. I got stuck with the Gulf Of California. The teacher needed this "book" to be in large type, and would need to have color pictures. The reason for this was the following year, she would be teaching Oceanography to 6th graders. The ultimatum was to score 90% or above on this final project, and be exempt from the final exam. Well, I was all for that, so I put my all into this project, as I do with any project.This was allowed to be a group project, or you could work alone. I chose to work alone so I could get the job done properly without anybody else providing either misinformation, or not contributing.But I was the computer guy. While you could do the old "cut and paste" with scissors and glue, I wanted to computerize it. Me, being the old hardware guy, it became apparent that the computer was not up to the task. It was frustrating, to say the absolute least. On a 486 computer with maybe 24MB of RAM, and Windows 3.1, this wasn't boding well. Cutting to the chase, by the end of the project, it would take 30 minutes to load the file in a word processor, and 25 minutes to save. Adding anything to it was equally painful. Of course I wasn't going to get a comptuer to complete this project and further my studies into college--at least not yet. So I had to deal with this slowness.The next problem was printing this in color in 1997. While there were certainly color inkjets on the market, they were expensive, and of course, so was the ink. Another option would be to take the report, somehow to the "paper fastener" store, decked out in red, and have them print it. Getting my father to "shake a few Shekels out" was going to be an impossibliliy.I had recently done some work for out next door neighbor at the time. I set up the new computer he bought, and indeed, he did have a color inkjet printer. I asked him if it would be possible that I could print this at his house. He agreed. I told him that this included a lot of color pictures and might drain the ink cartridges, to which he replied "if they run out, I'll by new ones". I couldn't believe it was going to be this easy!Well it actually wasn't. The file was about 50MB or so. CD burners weren't common in 1997, and no flash drives existed? The only way was an Iomega ZIP drive, which I had. So I packed up the drive, the disk, the cables, power adapter, and driver diskette, and went over there. I had to pull the computer out of the desk I put together, disconnect his parallel port printer (there was no USB at this time, at least not useable like today), connect the ZIP drive to the parallel port, then hook the printer into the passthrough port. I also had to bring 6 floppy disks that contained the word processor I used to create the program. With all of that, I got the word processor installed, ZIP drive driver installed, rebooted, and the drive was online. I took the liberty of copying the file to the hard drive, which would avoid any collisions on the parallel port and slow everything down to a crawl. I opened the word processor, told it to open the file, and it opened in 30 seconds flat!!!!!! Here I was, waiting 30 minutes at home, and this machine (obviously, considerably newer with a Pentium 166MHz processor and 64MB of RAM) could open it in 30 seconds! The HELL I went through! I couldn't believe it opened so fast, so I closed the program and reopened it and the file and BAM, there it was! OK, File, Print, right, everything is correct, and Print. The printer fired up and faithfully printed this "book" in color! I was saved!When I turned this in to the teacher when it was due, I told her in no uncertain terms would I accept anything less than 100% on this project. I scored 100%, and was exempt from the final.My life has been filled with struggles through and through. Many of these struggles could have been resolved by simply "shaking a few Shekels out", but that was an impossibility in my upbringing. These days, I could just go and buy a whole setup just to print it, but I wasn't afforded the luxury of growing up like that. Lawn Equipment Startup 2024 Stuck Engine And All! jaykay18 2024-05-04 | Originally recorded April 19, 2024.It was time once again to get the lawn equipment out and get it running for the season so I could mow the lawn for the first time.The weedwacker had similar trouble starting last year for the first time, then it was perfectly happy to start and run for the rest of the season. This year it took several more pulls than normal for it to start. I re-read the book and it actually states to press the primer button MORE THAN 10 times. Excessive I think but that's exactly what it says. So going forward I'll go for maybe 12 presses, and perhaps that will help. Another thing that will greatly help is fresh fuel; the fuel in the tank was from last year, and I cannot even remember how old it was then. I only mix up a gallon of 2-cycle as needed, and that's really the only tool I have that uses it. Yes, I have the 2-cycle generator as well as the 2-cycle hedge trimmer, but those items are used once a season, if even that much.The ghetto-fabulous mower? Well, I think "train wreck" best describes it. I went and did absolutely everything to prepare it for its first run, including topping off the oil, filling with (relatively) fresh fuel, and priming until there was definitely gas in the intake. But the mower had other plans--for the third time (that I can remember) the engine was locked up after all that. So using my patented method™ of using the blade for leverage, I got the engine to spin free. Re-primed, everything all set, should 100% a go, if only I had remembered to plug the spark plug wire back in! Even after that, it would start but stall a moment later. I know the Chinese carb on it is junk, as they all are, but it was new at the very end of the season last year, and had almost no run time on it. It's got to do better than that. Fortunately, on the third try, it did finally run. Because the governor spring is misshapen, it runs rough and "surges" or "hunts" around for proper idle speed, until the engine has warmed up some. Perhaps a few squalls of snow totalling just a couple inches each time, no need to get this big behemoth out! I was surprised we had such a great winter again after last year's winter that also had very minimal snow.Now, with the warmer weather here, it's time to prepare the snowblower for the off-season. Always ensure you empty your snowblower of remaining fuel each year. This will ensure proper startup next time there's 14 feet of snow outside. You can do this in one of 3 ways:1. Simply run the engine until it runs out of fuel.2. Drain the gas tank by removing the fuel hose.3. Siphon the fuel out of the gas tank.Whatever you do, make sure to start the engine back up again, and burn the remaining fuel in the carburetor off, basically, run it till it runs out of fuel. Replacing The Electrical Strain Relief On The Pool Pump jaykay18 2024-04-27 | Originally recorded April 16, 2024.I needed to replace the electrical strain relief on the pool pump. It had broken off, I believe when the pump was removed when the pool was closed. But, it's about 20 years old, maybe even more, so I can understand. Unfortunately, this did not go as planned. First, my day was delayed quite a bit, I wanted to get started on this sooner. But there were other things to attend to. It was hard enough trying to find a suitable piece for this pump. The replacement that I got was not correct. But I had to make do with what I had. There was a lot of improvising, and a lot of haste in this video. There are many things I could have done to make this even better. But it was one of those things that I just needed done NOW. I am sure I will have to revisit this in the future. Especially since the wires in the back of the pump motor have cracked insulation and are basically "cooked" from all of the years running. The pump needs an entire new cord that I will have to custom make, and the right connector. This guy in the van had absolutely no idea where he was going. But of course that's no excuse to drive unsafely! Beforehand, I saw him weave from the middle lane into the left lane, then back again into the middle lane, only to ultimately cut me off trying to exit the road from the middle lane. Had to slam on the brakes, which also caused the ABS to kick in. This could have been bad. Slamming on the brakes could have caused a rear-end collision, not doing so would have cause a front collision. Yet this guy refused to check his mirrors, or accept the fact that he was too late to exit. The fun part is that the road I was traveling on has many cross streets. He could have easily turned on the next cross street, turned around, and come back the opposite direction and still gotten the route he needed in the correct direction, all with out inconveniencing, and more importantly, putting anyone in danger.

Tiny Middle was so caught up in preventing internal theft that they did nothing to the customers that would steal left and right! While internal theft indeed is a thing, and employees generally would have access to higher dollar items, the law of small numbers applies. A large number of small numbers adds up to a lot. It was the same at The Wiz, they were too concerned about preventing internal theft that they let everything else fly under the radar.It was easy when I started at Tiny Middle. The break room had coat hooks. When you'd arrive, you'd make your way back there, hang your coat up, and you were set. If you had any valuables, they gave you a locker with a lock. Simple as that. When I went into the shop, guys would throw their coats over the back of their chair. I found a shelf and there was a screw in it, so I hung my coat up on that. Going out to lunch or leaving for the day, grab your coat, visit your locker if need be, and you're out of there.But oh no, they had to complicate matters and make it much more difficult for the employees, and make them feel like criminals. Especially the honest ones. Towards the end, they got rid of the coat hooks in the break room. They had a contractor come in and build a small room with a door that was automatically closing, and a lock on it. All managers had the key to it. But I'll get back to that in a moment.In the old days, if you'd get there before the store opened, you'd go to the exit doors. They were the sliding type, and you'd manually separate them by hand, and close them behind you. Same for the next set of doors. But no, couldn't have CUSTOMERS walk in before the stoe is open, they might want to BUY something! So, they kept the outer doors open, but the inner doors locked. Then they put a doorbell button. When you'd get in, you'd have to ring the doorbell and HOPE that somebody would come by and let you in. Meanwhile, you're going to be marked late in the system because you got there just in the nick of time and then spent 3 more minutes waiting, ringing that bell constantly until someone finally decided to get the door. And sometimes, customers would wait in the exit vestibule, especially if there was inclement weather, hoping for a break in the rain. Or, another family member went to get the car, so they could load it in quick and get out of there. Invariably, they'd bring their bratty kids that they didn't watch, and the kids would see a nice shiny doorbell button! Gee, I wonder what would happen if I pressed this, the kids would think, and then they would because they weren't being watched. So randomly, throughout the day, that bell would ring.After they built this small room, all employees were to lock their coats and valuables up in there. If there was any item that needed to go with the employee anywhere in the store, they had to put their items in a clear plastic bag, so management could make sure they weren't stealing. Being that this room was always locked, and a manager had the key, the manager would now always know when you were leaving the store and coming back, because you'd have to get your coat, and then put it back. Or perhaps switch to a differnet smartphone because you drained the battery on the first one. So that meant the managers could now keep tabs on you as well.Well, I decided to fight fire with fire. I refused to use that room at all. When I left the house in the morning, I'd put my coat on, and drive to work. When I got there, I'd take my coat off and leave it on the seat in the car, and walk in. Rain, snow, didn't matter. And I'd always get asked where my coat was. They never did like the answer I gave when I said that I refuse to participate in this lockup room BS.Absolutely ridiculous, making employees feel like criminals. Employees, however, found other ways of making items disappear, even with this coat room.
Decommissioning An Amazon Echo Connect jaykay18 2024-04-20 | Originally recorded April 10, 2024.A couple of years ago, I bought an Amazon Echo Connect. The product, which I originally thought was useless at first, ended up being extremely useful. I bought it on closeout; Amazon had discontinued the device, though the service to run it was available. This didn't seem completely unreasonable, less and less people have a home phone anymore and instead rely on a $1000 SINGLE phone on their person which can easily be damaged, which is about the dumbest idea I have ever heard. But I digress; fact of the matter is many do not have a home phone anymore. They would have no use for the item.Because of the heavily discounted price, I decided to give it a shot. The setup process was completely beyond ridiculous and required that I actually download and install the Mozilla Firefox browser to set it up. Apparently some "hook" in the software was used that Firefox understood.Once the setup was out of the way and the unit was operational, it afforded me the following things:1. The ability to place a call through an Alexa device to any number in the US, utilizing my home phone service.2. The abiliy to place a call to 911 for emergency purposes, a feature the device itself does not have.3. The ability to receive a call through an Alexa device, acting as a speakerphone 4. All Alexa devices speaking the name and/or number of a calling party.Feature 4, the talking caller ID, made it all worth it for me. I have 10 Alexa devices around, and whenever the phone rang, wherever I was in the house, I could hear who was calling. I know some modern telephones have talking caller ID, but the voice certainly is not as clear, nor would it be able to announce throughout the entire house.And then, February 29, 2024, with minimal warning, they pulled the service out from under the device, leaving the device wothless and useless. There was absolutley no reason I could possibly think of that caused this. The software was stable and reliable, there was no upkeep, no maintenance, no nothing. It cost Amazon nothing to keep this service running. Yet they pulled it. I could understand pulling said service in order to then charge monthly for something similar, effectively "jumping on the bandwagon" of making things that you'd buy outright become subscription based. But no, the device is orphaned and useless.Does anyone have any ideas as to why they may have done this? It so seems this had a much greater impact than I realized. A lot of seniors were using this device as a voice-activated telephone. Some could no longer use their hands, but they certainly could operate a phone by voice. Others were hard of hearing, and this would allow them to hear who's calling. But they just yanked hte service out, giving virtually no warning, leaving all of these people scrambling for a new solution, and there really isn't any. It was a niche product that filled a niche market.The wif and I really liked the talking caller ID, and we greatly miss it now. Cleaning The Downstairs Bathroom Light Fixtures 3 Times Brighter! jaykay18 2024-04-18 | Originally recorded April 5, 2024.After cleaning the kitchen light fixture and seeing how filthy, dirty, and dusty it was, and the upstairs bathroom fixture being the same way, I decided it was high time to clean the fixtures in the downstairs bathroom as well. I never had since I moved in the house. The glass shades on these are easy to remove, there are 3 "set screws" as I call them, just loosen them all about the same amount the the glass shade comes off.Because these face upwards, they were AWFUL. All the dust settles inside. Not only the glass shade, but the bulb as well. I rinsed them off in the sink, water was all that was required. Then I reinstalled, and I was amazed at the difference cleaning just one fixture made! It was easily 3 times brighter. In this case, "if a little's good, a lot's better" actually worked, because I promptly cleaned the other fixture. It takes 5 bulbs. As they would burn out, I wouldn't have one exactly the same, so they'd never match. Then another one burned out. As incandescent bulbs are getting more and more scarce, I decided to just leave the burned out bulb burned out, so I shuffled the bulbs around and put the burned out one in the center. It was acceptable.Then another one burned out. There were now 3, so positions 2 and 4 had burned out bulbs. And then another burned out! Down to 2, so 1, 3, and 5 had burned out bulbs. It was getting pretty dim in the bathroom.I happened to get another load of incandescent bulbs, and it turns out that 3 of the 4 of a certain type I ordered worked. That's interesting--I could use exactly 3 bulbs. It was time to see if they would work well for the application, and they are suitable enough.But after cleaning the kitchen light fixture and seeing how filthy, dirty, and dusty it was, I decided it was high time to clean these as well. I never had since I moved in the house. The glass shades are not easy to remove, you have to reach up inside and there's a big metal washer that screws on to the ceramic socket. It's gritty feeling, tough to turn, and even more difficult to reinstall. But I did manage to get the glass shades down.Indeed, they were pretty gross, but not the worst I have seen. I rinsed them off in the sink, water was all that was required. Then I reinstalled, and show you the two remaining mismatched bulbs, along with the 3 new ones.
