We bought a mysterious Japanese house Rachel & Juns Adventures! 2022-08-06 | We bought an old, mysterious Japanese house (which we promptly demolished and built our new, current house on top of). Probably never going to get answers for some of the things we found, but it's all gone now so oh well!For many older houses in Japan, affordability/availability was prioritized over longevity, and there were a lot of environmental factors to consider (high humidity, natural disasters). In part due to this, old houses here lose much or all of their value as they age, and many houses that go up for sale are either renovated or torn down and built over by the new owners.Nowadays technology has improved a LOT (along with safety requirements!) so modern Japanese houses can be very high quality and long-lasting, depending on the options you choose. We ended up building a wonderful house perfectly suited for us and our cats, and with a great view of our back yard! Buying fully grown trees in Japan Rachel & Juns Adventures! 2022-03-14 | We've been doing a TON of work on our yard and one of the most fun parts of that has been buying trees! Turns out you can buy FULLY GROWN trees, some even two stories high, and have them delivered and planted for you. This is called Ueki Matsuri (Garden Plant aka Tree Festival), although it's more of a market than a festival. (Everything's called a festival here.) Tree farmers, landscapers, etc all bring out a bunch of their plants and set up shop for about a month. Kind of like a flea market for trees! A lot of these trees and plants are way cheaper than you find at garden centers or nurseries, often they're impeccable quality, and many of them you can't buy anywhere else. In the intro clips for this video we show a hainoki tree (Japanese sapphireberry) we bought at another tree market last month that's over 30 years old! A day working on our yard! Turns out these things are much more expensive than we were expecting (a very small patch of land with plain concrete paving for a single car plus a low-end carport above it, a small bit of fake grass, a mailbox atop some tile, and small shed cost someone else we know ~$30,000. Don't have the exact size but the total landscaped area is perhaps the size of 3 sedan cars). The cat tower poles (which I'm pretty sure have some sort of hand-stabbing PLASTIC rope?!) have also been shredded to the point where our cats now sometimes slip when trying to climb it and therefore don't use it as often. So we bought some actual rope to replace it with, severely underestimating the amount of rope it requires to wrap cat poles.For the record, we used maybe 50-55 meters (~55-60 yards) of 6mm hemp rope (on a 10cm thick pole, about 110cm in length, if anyone out there needs to make their own calculations), which cost about 1,200 yen (~$12) per 20 meters. So it makes sense why they would use something cheap, plastic and stabby when making the original product... Anyway, we could only do the two most used poles instead of all of them today. We went to a fantastic park here in Fukuoka called Uminonakamichi (Seaside) Park. They have beautiful flower displays all year, so we wanted to get some inspiration for our own yard. We found a few we definitely want! This park is gigantic and also has a small zoo, a waterpark, a viewing pier on the ocean, and many other things. The zoo is free after admission to the park, which is only 450 yen per person. This is one of our favorite places to go for a nice day in Fukuoka. :)Also, sometimes they display art competitions (one time they had small artistic gardens!!) and they're always really incredible to see! Hardwood floors are common in houses (especially in more traditional houses), but the vinyl/laminate floors are much more common in apartments due to their cheaper price. Laminate flooring (often marked as "sheet" flooring) seems like the largest market for new home builders right now--most showrooms we visited primarily offered laminate flooring. When we expressed concern with the sturdiness and longevity of laminate flooring, basically everyone just started recommending us higher-end versions of laminate flooring that have better sealing layers on top... Hardwood flooring is incredibly expensive in Japan. The catalogue we have shows prices up to TWICE the cost of the engineered hardwood we chose in this video.At least there are tons of incredible wallpaper options that are relatively cheap! And there are quite a few places to get decently priced tile (mainly for walls, but for flooring as well). As with everything, you get what you pay for when it comes to quality and design...
