My worst investment! #gold Cash and Coins 2024-01-22 | Goldbacks are a unique form of private currency backed by physical gold, which have piqued the interest of those looking to diversify their investment portfolio. However, investing in Goldbacks carries market risks and may present challenges related to liquidity. According to online sources, some gold stackers complain that the Goldback has higher premiums than most other gold products. This isn’t unreasonable. After all, Goldback contains only 1/1000 oz of pure gold. If the current spot price of gold is $2,000, then that puts the melt value of a single Goldback note at $2. But they sell for over $6 at times per gold back, that’s six thousand dollars per oz!!! Additionally, Goldbacks are not widely accepted as a form of currency and are not backed by the US government, unlike the US dollar. Many coin stores won't even buy them ⁴. In 1975, the San Francisco Mint made a mistake that turned out to be one of the most expensive modern coins ever. They made a dime without a mint mark, which was discovered in a 1975-S Proof Set. A second example was also found years later. Neither coin had ever appeared at auction until the discovery coin was included in the 2011 sale by Stack’s-Bowers. The 1975 No-S Roosevelt dime sold for over $300,000 in 2011. But wait, there’s more! On September 6, 2019, this same 1975 dime sold for $456,000 at auction. Then, less than 1 week later, it sold to a dime collector for $516,000. That’s right, over half a million dollars for a dime! The “No-S” Proof coins were the product of the way in which Proof dies were handled. Beginning in 1968, when the San Francisco Mint began striking Proof coins, all dies for Proof coins were prepared at the Philadelphia Mint. This was done by adding a mintmark to a normal P-Mint die. However, some dies escaped this process, thus we see “No-S” dimes in 1968, 1970, 1975, and 1983. Aluminum One Cent Coin, Very RareLet me tell you about a coin that was never meant to be. The 1974 aluminum cent was a one-cent coin proposed by the United States Mint in 1973. It was composed of an alloy of aluminum and trace metals, intended to replace the copper-zinc cent due to rising production costs. However, none of 1,571,167 Aluminum coins struck at the Philadelphia mint were actually circulated. To gain congressional support for the new alloy, the Mint distributed several examples to U.S. Congressmen. When the proposed aluminum cent was rejected, the Mint recalled and destroyed those coins. But a few aluminum cents were not returned, and they may still be out there. One example resides in the Smithsonian Institution, while another was allegedly found by a U S Capitol Police Officer Albert P. Toven. A 1974-D specimen was discovered in January 2014, but the Mint demanded its return, asserting that the coin was never authorized for release and remains U.S. government property.
